2020.09.17 20:07 Rumored17 Refutations for Every Main Pro-Pit Argument

1."It's all how you raise them."

And more:
• Lockwood, R. A. N. D. A. L. L. (2016). Ethology, ecology and epidemiology of canine aggression. The Domestic Dog: Its Evolution, Behaviour & Interactions with People,, 160-181.
• Abrantes, R., Site, A., Camp, S., Diving, F. A. Q., Camp, G. P., Pages, M., ... & User, C. C. (2016). Aggressive Behavior—Inheritance and Environment.
• van den Berg, L. I. N. D. A. (2016). Genetics of dog behavior. The Domestic Dog: Its Evolution, Behavior and Interactions with People, 5, 69.
• O'Neill, D. G., & Packer, R. M. (2016). The First Canine Behavior and Genetics Conference: Summary and recommendations for future directions in canine behavioral science. Journal of Veterinary Behavior, 16, 6-12.
• Sørensen, M. (2016). Breeding aggression: Review of recent literature concerning the influence of genes on aggressive behaviour (Doctoral dissertation).
• Schilder, M. B., van der Borg, J. A., & Vinke, C. M. (2019). Intraspecific killing in dogs: predation behavior or aggression? A study of aggressors, victims, possible causes and motivations. Journal of Veterinary Behavior.
These studies all show that genetics play a large role in dog behavior. Most are related to Pit Bulls or aggression, but some just show that there are noticeable differences between dog breeds based on their breed. Here are some anecdotal sources to support the claims that Pit Bulls are born with a tendency to be aggressive:
In addition, "it's all how you raise them" goes against the very existence of dog breeds. If someone is arguing this, they are saying a Labrador Retriever will have the same instincts as a Border Collie, which will have the same instincts as a Doberman, which will have the same instincts as a Great Pyrenees, which will have the same instincts as a Dachshund, etc. This is observably and demonstrably false. Humans created different dog breeds with different temperaments and physical and behavioral traits through selective breeding. This is why dog breeds exist, this is why breed standards exist, this is why people can reasonably and accurately predict how a dog will act based on breed. Are there exceptions? Of course. However, that is just what they are- exceptions. Different dog breeds have different traits and tendencies dependent on what they were selectively bred for.

2. "Chihuahuas are more aggressive."

This is just a disingenuous attempt to derail the conversation. Even if Chihuahuas are more aggressive, they don't/can't kill people. If Chihuahuas were as large as Pit Bulls, perhaps this would be a conversation worth having- seeing as this is not the case, there is no argument to be had here.
I try to emphasize that the issue with Pits is how many people and pets they kill. Pit Bulls are not just biting people- they are killing, severely maiming, and mauling people. There is a huge difference, and it is important to recognize many Pit fanatics will try to lump in all dog bites with the maulings Pit Bulls are responsible for. They are not the same. This is similar to the "Labs bite more" argument- again, we are not just talking about bites. Keep the discussion focused on severe maulings, maimings, and deaths, because that is what BSL targets.
From 1982-2020 no Chihuahua has ever killed anyone. This source breaks down attacks by breed, child or adult victim, and death or maiming.

3. "There's no such thing as a Pit Bull." and "Pit Bulls can't be identified."

A good way to avoid even getting to this apologist bingo point is by using the phrasing "Pit Bull type dogs" as opposed to Pit Bulls. However, you can also just explain that "Pit Bull" is an umbrella term for four closely related dog breeds- the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the American Bully. The American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier are actually so similar they can be dual registered as an AmStaff with the AKC and a APBT with the UKC. Until recently, most dog DNA tests would not even separate AmStaff from APBT due to the extreme similarities. This is also just another deflection technique- everyone knows what someone means by "Pit Bull" just as everyone knows what someone means by "Golden Retriever." This is what "pit bull" means legally.
Now, because "Pit Bull" does refer to 4 dog breeds rather than one, Pit apologists will often cry "well of course 4 dog breeds will kill more people!" but keep in mind that these 4 dog breeds have killed more people than 300+ other dog breeds combined. The Pit Bull umbrella kills more people than every other group or type of dogs and more than every other dog breed combined.
Regarding Pit Bulls being unidentifiable:
Pit Bulls have just as many obvious identifying characteristics as other dog breeds. There is no reason to believe Pit Bulls suffer from misidentification more than other dog breeds. There is reason to believe Pit Bulls are intentionally mislabeled as other breeds when in shelters, however. In addition, when discussing fatal Pit Bull attacks specifically, more often than not there are photos of the Pit Bulls involved so anyone can verify for themselves if they were Pit Bull type dogs. Genetic testing is not required for breed identification- anyone who argues this is being disingenuous. Another point is that we are constantly inundated with Pro-Pit propaganda; there is simply no way we can have Pixar shorts such as Kitbull and a new Dodo video every week about Pit Bulls and still be expected to believe the average person cannot visually identify a Pit Bull.

4. "Pits are no more dangerous than other dogs."

The statistics also support our side here- Pit Bulls have killed more people than all other dog breeds combined. Pit Bulls are not the largest, nor the strongest dogs out there. They do not have the strongest bite force. They are more deadly than other dog breeds because humans selectively bred them to be as deadly as possible. They are deadly due to the nature of their attacks and the behavioral traits they display when attacking such as gameness and a bite style mentioned in some of these studies, along with their physical traits.

5. "It used to be Dobermans, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds that people wanted to ban!"

Pit Bulls have killed more people than those three breeds ever did, even at the height of their popularity, even combined. There is also no evidence supporting this claim, and in fact, quite a lot of evidence showing it's completely false.
It is important to note as well that none of these breeds have an entire lobby supporting them. They do not have communities dedicated to attack victim harassment, misinformation, and lies, unlike the Pit Bull has. Something interesting to consider is the bias online when looking at these breeds and other restricted breeds vs pages about Pit Bulls. Wikipedia in particular is very obviously being manipulated by Pit Bull fanatics.
None of this manipulation is occurring on the pages for Dobermans, Rottweilers, or German Shepherds. These three breeds never reached anywhere close to the level of suffering and carnage Pit Bulls are responsible for. There has never been a concerted effort to ban these breeds, although some are targeted by apartment restrictions due to insurance issues. There is also no lobby supporting the misinformation and misrepresentation of these breeds.

6. "Dogsbite.org is biased and unreliable."

Dogsbite is completely open and transparent about their data collection strategies. They provide identification photographs and have all of their citations publicly listed. Citations and Photographs
Here is a challenge I like to give to people who claim Dogsbite is unreliable, although I have yet to receive a legitimate response:
Have you actually looked into dogsbite.org yourself? You do know that dogsbite tracks every fatal dog attack, regardless if it's a Pit or not? It appears anti-Pit because most fatal dog attacks are done by Pits. They're not only posting Pit attacks- there are just so many more fatal Pit attacks than other breeds it appears they are. Here's a proposal for you: Go to 2020 and late 2019, a time frame for which news reports are still abundantly available all over the internet, and fact-check ANY FOUR DOG-BITE FATALITIES OF YOUR CHOOSING, two where the killer dogs are said to be pit/mixes, and two cases where the killer dogs are not said to be pit/mixes:
  1. Did DogsBite accurately name the person killed?
  2. Did DogsBite accurately summarize the circumstances in which the person was killed?
  3. Did DogsBite accurately identify the breed(s) of the killer dog(s)?
  4. Did DogsBite provide a photo or photos of the killer dog(s) so you can judge for yourself what type of dog(s) you think did the killing?
DogsBite and Wikipedia both provide links to news stories about these fatal attacks. If you don't want to use the news links provided by DogsBite, then use the ones on Wikipedia that cover the same stories. DogsBite also provides links to autopsy reports, police reports and 911 calls, so you can compare these primary sources with the summaries on the DogsBite page and assess whether those summaries are accurate.

7. "Human aggressive Pit Bulls were culled!"

This is a myth. While human aggression was not something that was typically selectively bred for it is a myth that most human aggressive Pits were culled. That was not the case, and it still is not the case today. One look at shelter descriptions of Pits with bite histories and severe aggression issues shows these dogs are not being euthanized, and there are several instances of Pit Bulls who have killed people being bred.
There's no evidence whatsoever that dog fighters routinely destroyed human-aggressive dogs and refused to breed them. u/NorthTwoZero wrote at length about why it's a myth here, and this blogger put together a documented list of famously human-aggressive fighting dogs who not only weren't "culled" but were bred so often that they produced over 1,200 known, registered offspring:
"The man-biters were culled and the pit bulls were not bred for human aggression myths were created from thin air, complete fabrications. There is not a sliver of truth in the myth that dogmen culled man-biters. Not only weren't human aggressive pit fighters NOT culled, but a talented man-biter was heavily bred, his stud services were in high demand and the stud fees commanded a premium. The progeny of man-biters are still sought out long after he or she has passed away. This Italian game-dog website lists their choice for the Best Ever fighting dogs, three of the five are known man-biters and the other two trace their origins to the others on their "Best" list. Some famous man-biters have their own facebook fan pages. If you happen to be a 10x winner with 3 kills and scratching on the carcass, people tend to overlook a little thing like the danger she poses to people and she is also likely to be nominated for the cover of this month's International Sporting Dog Journal. Some famous man-biters not only have a facebook fan page, they have their own promotional merchandise too."

8. "Pit Bulls were nanny dogs!" or "Pit Bulls were America's dog!"

First, I usually ask questions that demonstrate out how absurd that claim is. What is a nanny dog? What duties does a nanny dog perform? Why would a dog type be called a "Pit Bull" if it nannied? Where does the name "Pit Bull" come from? Why is it necessary for Pits to have such large, gaping mouths and extremely muscular bodies if they were nannies? Then here is some actual info:
The first appearance of the term "Nanny Dog" dates from a 1971 NYT interview with the then president of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of America, Lillian Rant, who called Staffordshire Bull Terriers "nursemaid dogs" for no apparent reason (other than to attempt to re-brand fighting dogs as family pets).
BAD RAP shared a link. It's Dog Bite Prevention Week. Did you know that there was never such thing as a 'Nanny's Dog'? This term was a recent invention created to describe the myriad of vintage photos of children enjoying their family pit bulls (see link for details about vintage photos). While the intention behind the term was innocent, using it may mislead parents into being careless with their children around their family dog - A recipe for dog bites!
Regarding Pits being "America's dog": Bronwen Dickey (author of incredibly biased and unscientific book "Pit Bull: The Battle over an American Icon") and other pit bull advocates argue that pit bulls were historically beloved in the U.S. until the dogs became associated with urban people of color in the 1970s, so Pit Bull stigma is really about being racist toward black and brown people.
But pit bulls were not historically beloved in the U.S. nor were they popularly regarded as a positive symbol of plucky can-do spirit. Joseph Colby, in his lifetime one of the world's leading authorities on the Pit Bull Terrier, wrote in 1936 that "The general public is under the impression that this breed is carnivorous, vicious, and, fed on a diet of raw meat, will devour a human being" and "When the pit bull terrier was introduced into America, he was more commonly found to be owned by prize fighters, saloon keepers and habitues, sporting men and the like. From the start the breed earned an unjust reputation due to his fighting ability and the character of the owner. To this day he is still trying to live down an unjust and undeserved reputation."
Sometimes Pit people will randomly mention how Sergeant Stubby, a decorated war hero dog, was a Pit Bull. He was not. Primary (contemporary) sources most often describe Stubby as a Boston Terrier or Boston Terrier mix (this breed was sometimes called the Boston Bulldog). He is sometimes said to be a Bull Terrier (the egghead dogs) mix but he obviously resembles a Boston Terrier significantly more than a Bull Terrier. Stubby is never said to be a Pit Bull in primary sources.

9. "Pit Bulls scored 2nd highest on temperament tests and better than most family dog breeds!"

This is always referring to the ATTS, or the American Temperament Testing Society. It is refuted thoroughly in the BanPitBulls FAQ, but this is what I usually say as well:
The test was developed to test working dogs, specifically dogs meant for schutzhund work. It has never been, nor ever purported to be about testing companion animals or a breed's suitability as family pets. Scoring actually favors dogs that bite, in some cases. Breed specific temperament, aggression, and each dog's training is taken into account when scoring. This means that if a relatively untrained Lab bites a "threatening stranger" it will score far lower than a German Shepherd that bites a "threatening stranger." According to the ATTS itself, "95% of dogs who fail do so because they lack confidence" NOT because they bite. Dogs that exhibit avoidance behaviors will fail. Dogs that bite do not automatically fail. The ATTS also states that comparing scores with other dogs means nothing- the pass/fail rates cannot be compared. Different dog breeds that behave the same exact way on the test will get hugely different scores due to the fact they take inherent breed tendencies into consideration. The test is not designed to test for breed aggression, according to the ATTS website. It is more of a test of bravery for individual dogs. Timid dogs will always fail. Dogs that bite will not always fail. If anything, you could argue that the reason Pits have a high passing rate is because they bite or show aggression, although that is speculation and not proven. Either way though- the test does not test breed aggression, passing rates cannot be compared, and the test absolutely does not test for suitability as a family pet. More info here: What the ATTS is really showing.
It is also worth mentioning that the only dogs that participate in the ATTS testing are dogs brought in by their owners- it is not a random sample or scientific study of any kind. Considering the evidence showing the existence of an actual Pit Bull lobby, it would not be a reach to say these results have been intentionally manipulated (if they did even matter, which they don't).
Also, a controlled temperament test found that 13 percent, or one out of seven, pit bulls tried to bite or attack during a one hour test simulating a neighborhood walk. One out of seven pit bulls tried to bite in the span of just one hour compared to only one out of 70 golden retrievers. Note that this study was funded and authored by anti-breed ban activists: They found "no significant difference" between breeds when the definition of aggression was watered down to include even whining or crying. But pay close attention to Table 5 on page 138: out of all the breeds tested, pit bulls were markedly the worst when it came to the percentage of dogs that reached a more serious level of aggression.

10. "It's racism for dogs!"

Humans are not dogs, and dog breeds are not analogous to human races.
In addition, one cannot compare a race of people to a breed of dogs for a multitude of reasons. Dog breeds were selectively, intentionally bred for specific characteristics and traits by human beings. Humans created dog breeds based on what physical and behavioral traits we wanted them to have. (Spaniels for flushing, retrievers for fetching prey/birds without damage, livestock guardian dogs such as Great Pyrenees for protecting livestock, Huskies for endurance and energy, Pointers for pointing, etc. Different dog breeds have different behavioral tendencies because humans selectively bred them to have those tendencies). Dogs also do not suffer from cultural differences, institutionalized racism, or socioeconomic disparities. Humans are also not as heavily influenced by our instincts as dogs are. Dogs behave based on their instincts and training. Humans behave mainly on their "training." Humans also have far more complex thought processes and the ability to make complex decisions. Dogs do not. You could go on and on but that is the basic overview there- dogs were selectively bred and rely mainly on their instincts. Humans were not selectively bred and are capable of making complex and rational decisions.

This means that if a relatively untrained Lab bites a "threatening stranger" it will score far lower than a German Shepherd that bites a "threatening stranger."
According to the ATTS itself, "95% of dogs who fail do so because they lack confidence" NOT because they bite.

2020.09.02 12:53 majinmattossj2 Brazilian Big12 series, Episode 8/12: Corinthians

Previous episodes: Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense, Grêmio, Botafogo, Atlético Mineiro, Internacional
In this series I will present each of the 12 Brazilian teams that together compose the "Big 12". My point is to make them more knowledgeable to you, since each one of these teams have their share of the Brazil national team success and of Brazilian club football accomplishments as a whole. I'll try to be as smooth, efficient and non-boring as I can. If the feedback is positive, I'll keep bringing more to this series. So ok, let's do this!
Method: I'll present the teams in a chronological order, from the oldest foundation (Flamengo-1895) to the latest one (São Paulo-1930). The order will be: Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense, Grêmio, Botafogo, Atlético Mineiro, Internacional, Corinthians, Santos, Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, São Paulo. How many of these have you heard of?
Extra clubs: Due to a high number of requests, I'll also present 3 teams who don't belong to the Big12, but are also considered big clubs in Brazil: Bahia, Athletico Paranaense and Coritiba. Welcome to the club!
Geographical reference: Before we start, I'd like to ask something very simple from you. I want you to keep in mind that these 12 teams are spread in 4 different States in Brazil. The club's State name is written below, next to the club's name. It has a direct link to Google Maps, so that you can check it out to make this experience more accurate.

The kings of São Paulo and the team of the people (1910-1954)
Corinthians was founded in 1910 by a group of factory workers in São Paulo, inspired by Corinthian FC, an English team that was going on an excursion in Brazil. From the first moment of Corinthians foundation, their president stated that they would be the "team of the people, and that the people would make the team". It was a manifest against the aristocratic trend of only allowing rich and white people into football clubs.
In Brazilian football early days, there wasn't a national league until 1959, so the teams would play inside their own state, in the State Leagues. In this São Paulo State League Era, Corinthians rose from nothing to become the most victorious team inside the state, with 15 titles, notably leaving behind their rivals Palmeiras (12), São Paulo (8), Santos (4), and also traditional teams from the amateur era such as Paulistano (11). If there was a national league in this period, Corinthians would certainly be a serious title contender, along with Fluminense (from Rio de Janeiro state league) and their archrival, Palmeiras.
Highlights to Corinthians early-1950s decade, when they won 2 State Leagues (1951, 1952), 3 Rio-São Paulo Tournament (1950, 1953, 1954) and 1 Pequeña Copa del Mundo in Venezuela (1953).

1954 Rio-São Paulo Corinthians Fluminense Palmeiras
Corinthians notably won, undefeated, the 1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo against Roma (Italy), Barcelona (Spain) and Caracas (Venezuela). Barcelona, of the Hungarian star Kubala, were the current Spanish and Latin Cup champions; Roma, 6th placed in the Serie A; and Caracas, the home guests. Corinthians won their 6 matches, as you can see below. The topscorers were Luizinho (Corinthians) and Kubala (Barcelona) with 5 goals each.

1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo Corinthians 1-0 Roma (Italy) Luizinho (1)
1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo Corinthians 3-2 Barcelona (Spain) Luizinho (2), Kubala (1), Moreno (1), Carbone (1)

1953 Pequeña Copa del Mundo Corinthians 3-1 Roma (Italy) Luizinho (2), Cláudio (1), Galle (1)
Later in 1958, Corinthians provided the Brazilian National Team with two players in the World Cup title campaign, notably the legendary goalkeeper Gylmar, starter in 1958 and 1962. He played 395 matches for Corinthians, before moving to Santos in 1961.
1954-1977: the drought and the Rivellino Era
In this period, Corinthians went through their longest title drought of their history, without winning a single trophy. Technically, they won the 1966 Rio-São Paulo Tournament, but it had to be shared with 3 other teams due to a lack of dates to end it.
Between 1965 and 1974, Rivellino (born 1946), a creation of Corinthians youth system, was the team's main star. He played 474 matches for Corinthians, scoring 141 goals, and represented his club in the 1970 and 1974 World Cups. He never managed to win the then prestigious State League title, or even the National League, reaching the State League final just once, in 1974, losing to their archrival Palmeiras. He was "found guilty" of losing the final and was released from the club, sold to Fluminense. You can see some of Rivellino magical skills in this amazing skills-only video (3mn08s video).
In this difficult era, Corinthians also counted with legendary star Garrincha in 1966. However, his form was already declining at the age of 32, and he only appeared in 13 matches, scoring 2 goals.
Curiously enough, Pelé played professionaly from 1956 to 1977, almost the exact time Corinthians went trophyless. When Pelé began to shine in football, he used to say that he was rejected in a Corinthians trial in 1954, and therefore cursed that "while I (Pelé) play football, Corinthians will never be champions again". Pelé retired on the 1st of October 1977, and 12 days later, on the 13th October 1977, Corinthians 23-year title drought was over, as they won the 1977 São Paulo State League, 1-0 against Ponte Preta, with a goal from Basilio, at minute 81.
1976: The Corinthians Invasion
A year before Corinthians drought was over, one of the biggest events in the history of Brazilian football took place, the Invasão Corinthiana. The 5th of December 1976, a one-match-only Brazilian League semi-final would happen in Rio de Janeiro, between the home guests Fluminense (of Rivellino, who left Corinthians in 1974) and Corinthians, from São Paulo, 450km away from Rio.
The hype was intense. Fluminense were the frank favorites: 10 of their starting 11 had already been capped to the Brazil NT, they were called the Tricolor Machine.
The Maracanã 146.000 capacity would be split half-half. 70.000 tickets were given to Corinthians by Fluminense, and they were sold out in less than 3 hours. Tens of thousands of Corinthianos started moving from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro 2 days before the match: by airplane, bus, car, motorcycle, bike, taxi, it didn't matter, the Rio-São Paulo highway was dominated by Corinthians supporters (pic). On Saturday 4th, one day before the match, the city and the Copacabana beach of Rio de Janeiro became a huge Corinthianos party. Hundreds and hundreds of black and white flags and shirts all over the city.
On the day of the match, the atmosphere inside the Maracanã was INTENSE (5mn video). More than ever, Corinthians needed to end that title drought. Inexplicably, Corinthians fanbase had their biggest growth during the 60s/70s title drought. That's why they say that only the Corinthians supporters know what it's like to be a Corinthiano, that's why they nicknamed themselves "the Sufferers". Because they are the legitimate team of the people.
The match started under a moderate rain, and the pitch wasn't at its best. Fluminense opened the score at '29, with this goal from Pintinho. Corinthians needed at least a goal to go to extratime, and found it at '29 with Russo, after a corner kick. The rain intensified, and the pitch turned into this horrible mud. Not much happened afterwards, and the match went to the penalty kicks. Corinthians GK Tobias saved Fluminense's 1st and 2nd p.k., while Corinthians scored all their 3 penalties, and Fluminense only 1 out of 3. Zé Maria then scored Corinthians 4th penalty and qualified his team to the 1976 Brazilian League final.
However, Corinthians lost the final 0-2 to Falcão's Internacional, playing away. But the epic Invasão Corinthiana of Rio de Janeiro would be forever remembered in the Brazilian football history - this very good 46mn documentary comes back to 1976 and also shows the 2000 (Rio de Janeiro) and 2012 (Japan) Club World Cup posterior invasions.
1977: the State League title and the end of the drought
In 1977, Corinthians 23-year title drought finally came to an end, after they won the State League title. They played 48 matches, with 30W-6D-12L, cumulating 55% of the points. In the big final, they beat Ponte Preta 1-0, with Basílio scoring this eternal goal at '81.
It was Corinthians' 16th State League title, while their rivals had 18 (Palmeiras), 13 (Santos) and 11 (São Paulo) at that point. So, even without winning a State League title for 23 years, Corinthians was still fighting for São Paulo state title record.
1982-84: Socrates and the Corinthians Democracy
In the middle of the Brazilian military dictatorship, Corinthians chose to wave a flag in favor of democracy. It all began in April 1982, with the nomination of a sociologist, Adilson, to the football director job. Adilson liked to listen to the players, and along with politicized players such as Sócrates, Wladimir, Casagrande and Zenon, decided to establish an innovative democracy inside the club.
Basically, every decision (contracts, inside rules, etc) that was to be taken would be decided by voting. From the president to the average worker, all had the same right to vote, and the same vote weight. For example, thanks to this voting system, married players didn't need to sleep in hotels before matches with the rest of the team anymore. They would also use the Corinthians kit to spread political opinions in favor of democracy--such as the sayings "Diretas Já" ("Direct voting Now") and "Eu quero votar para presidente" ("I want to vote for president").
In April 1984, the Amendment Proposal For Direct Voting was rejected by the Chamber of Deputies, which collaborated to the departure of Sócrates to the Italian Serie A (Fiorentina), and to the end of the Corinthians Democracy. This talented generation won the São Paulo State Leagues of 1982 and 1983, and reached the 1982 and 1984 Brazilian League semi-finals.
This notable team provided the charming Brazil of 1982 (5mn46s video) with Sócrates, who played 265 matches for Corinthians, scoring 172 goals between 1978 and 1984.
1990: the first Brazilian League title
After winning the 1988 State League title, Corinthians won their first Brazilian League title in 1990. Led by midfielder Neto to the knock-out stages, Corinthians defeated Atlético Mineiro in the quarter-finals. In the 1st leg, they did a 2-1 comeback, with both goals from Neto: the first with a header and the second shooting from inside the box. In the 2nd leg, a 0-0 tie put Corinthians in the semi-final stage against Bahia.
In the 1st leg of the semis, Bahia opened the scored, but Corinthians tied with an own goal. Neto scored the 2nd goal with his trademark style, the free-kick. In the 2nd leg, a 0-0 tie was enough to put Corinthians in the final.
In the final, a derby between Corinthians and the São Paulo of Zetti, Cafu, Leonardo, Raí and the coach Telê Santana (former 1982 Brazil coach).
In the 1st leg, Wilson Mano scored the only goal of the match at '4. Fabinho (Corinthians) almost scored the 2nd after this brilliant run and conclusion, saved by Zetti, and Ronaldo (Corinthians GK), fantastic as always, kept Corinthians goal secured with great saves. In the final 2nd leg, Corinthians scored the only goal of the match at '54, after a great one-two between Fabinho and Tupãzinho, with the latter scoring the goal, and securing Corinthians first Brazilian League title.
Ronaldo (GK) and Marcelo Djian (CB) were both elected to the League's Best XI.
Corinthians kept the good shape and won 2 more State Leagues (1995, 1997) and 1 Copa do Brasil undefeated (1995), as well as 2nd place in the 1994 Brazilian League, with a new generation led by Viola and their eventual big idol, Marcelinho Carioca.

Vampeta, Rincón, Marcelinho and Ricardinho. The high-level of this midfield make the hearing of their names sound like poetry. The best Corinthians of all-time counted with other monsters such as GK Dida, Paraguayan CB Gamarra, LB Kléber, and the FW duo Luizão and Edílson. 5 of these guys were with the Brazil NT in the 2002 World Cup.
In this period, Corinthians won the 1998 and 1999 Brazilian Leagues, the 2000 Club World Cup and the 1999 São Paulo State League.
Luxemburgo (eventual Real Madrid coach) was the man behind the creation of this superteam. In the 1998 Brazilian League, Corinthians qualified to the knock-out stages with the best campaign. They first sent Grêmio home in the quarter-finals; and then Santos in the semi-finals, after three exciting matches (4mn51s video) and this fine and decisive goal by Edilson at '57 of the 3rd semi-final match.
In the big final against Cruzeiro, Corinthians started badly on the 1st match (away), losing 0-2 at half-time, but recovered greatly with two goals and left with a 2-2 tie. The 2nd leg, at home, was a 1-1 tie, with Corinthians opening the score and Cruzeiro equalizing later. In the 3rd final match, at home, Corinthians won by 2-0, with the first goal by Edilson at '70 and the second goal by Marcelinho Carioca at '80. For the 2nd time, Corinthians were crowned Brazilian champions. Gamarra and Vampeta were elected to the League's Best XI, while Edílson won the Golden Ball and Marcelinho Carioca was the team's topscorer with 19 goals in 28 matches. Their coach Luxemburgo left Corinthians to command the Brazil NT, appointing his auxiliary Oswaldo de Oliveira as the new coach.
Corinthians 1999 season was a hell of a rollercoaster. Qualified to the big dream, the Copa Libertadores, the team was the same as 1998, and had the arrival of Dida and Luizão.
In May 1999, Corinthians were knocked-off of the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals by their archrival Palmeiras, 2-4 on the penalties, after two evenly derbies (0-2, 2-0).
Weeks later, in June 1999, Corinthians and Palmeiras, again, disputed the final of the State League. Corinthians won the 1st derby 3-0. At minute 75 of the 2nd leg, with 2-2 in the score and Corinthians' title secured, Corinthians' winger Edílson performed the biggest provocation in the history of Brazilian football, by doing kick-ups with the ball, provoking this huge, epic and funny struggle. The match ended, and Corinthians were crowned State champions.
At the end of the season, Corinthians dominated the 1999 Brazilian League. In the K.O stage, they beat Guarani in the quarter-finals, and then their city rival São Paulo in the semis (3-2, 2-1), after Dida epically saved two penalties from São Paulo idol Raí (former PSG): the first on his left side at '52, and the second on his right side at '92. Corinthians then won the 2nd leg 2-1 and qualified to the finals.
They would face Atlético Mineiro, and lost the 1st leg (away) 2-3. At home in the 2nd leg, Corinthians beat them 2-0 with 2 goals from Luizão, the first at '28 from a header, and the second at '59 from inside the box. The 3rd leg was an electrifying 0-0 tie, and Corinthians were declared back-to-back Brazilian League champions.
Dida, Rincón and Vampeta were elected to the League's Best XI, Marcelinho Carioca won the Golden Ball, and Luizão was the team's topscorer with 21 goals in 25 matches.
The 2000 FIFA Club World Cup title
In 2000, took place in Brazil the first edition of the Club World Cup, and Corinthians qualified as Brazilian champions.

Before Real Madrid's match against Corinthians, the French centre-back Karembeu said he didn't know who Edilson (Corinthians number 10) was. In the match, Edilson humiliated him with this dismantling and shameful nutmeg, before scoring this painting of a goal. The match ended 2-2, with Edílson also scoring the other Corinthians goal.
This beautiful image is perfect to describe Karembeu's humiliating moment.
Corinthians would proceed to play against Vasco in the big final. 70.000 Corinthianos invaded Rio de Janeiro just like in 1976, expecting a great match against Vasco's dream team that had Romário, Edmundo and Juninho Pernambucano. After a 0-0 tie, it went to the penalties. Dida saved Gilberto's shot, and Marcelino Carioca only needed to score to end it, but he missed it. However, Edmundo lost Vasco's last penalty, and Corinthians were crowned Club World champions.
However, later that year, Corinthians met their archrivals Palmeiras once again in the Copa Libertadores, now in the semi-finals. After two crazy evenly derbies (4-3, 2-3), it went to the penalties, just like in 1999. And Marcelinho lost his one, getting Corinthians out of the tournament, and beginning a huge frustration and trauma of the Corinthianos for not having a continental title, while all their state rivals (Palmeiras, São Paulo and Santos) had.
2001-2010: Carlitos Tévez, the 2007 relegation, Ronaldo Nazário's last dance, and the Copa Libertadores trauma
The 2000s was a crazy decade for Corinthians.
They won 3 State League titles (2001, 2003, 2009), 1 Brazilian League (2005), 2 Copa do Brasil (2002, 2009) and 1 Rio-São Paulo (2002). But they were also relegated to the Brazilian League Serie B in 2007.
Highlights to their Galáticos 2005 team, led by Argentine stars Tévez and Mascherano, as well as Carlos Alberto (former Porto) and Nilmar (eventual Villareal), who together won the 2005 Brazilian League.
After their relegation to Serie B in 2007, the club rebuilt greatly under the president Andrés Sanchez.
He brought the legend Ronaldo Nazário in 2009, who led Corinthians to the 2009 State League title against Neymar's Santos and to the 2009 Copa do Brasil title against Internacional. Ronaldo scored 35 goals in 69 matches, with great highlights, notably this last-minute goal on his 1st match in a derby against Palmeiras and also this goal against Santos in the 2009 State League final. He was joined by left-back Roberto Carlos in 2010, before retiring in 2011.
But the Copa Libertadores trauma was still alive. The 30 million Corinthianos couldn't live with the jokes and suffering for not having a continental title.

Corinthians 2011-2012: National, Continental and World champions, the dream came true
The coach Tite almost lost his job after the ridiculous defeat to Tolima. But he stayed and focused on the 2011 Brazilian League.
Corinthians dominated the league, leading it for 27 rounds (out of 38). On the last round, they tied 0-0 against Palmeiras and secured their 5th Brazilian League title. However, sadly on this same day, the old idol Sócrates passed away, at the age of 57.
Corinthians had thus qualified to the 2012 Copa Libertadores, which they would brilliantly win undefeated (8W-6D), as well as their 2nd FIFA Club World Cup title.

In the quarter-finals, the adversary was the Brazilian team, Vasco. The 1st leg was in Rio de Janeiro, a 0-0 tie, with this only big chance in Corinthians' favor. In the 2nd leg, Corinthians were pressing Vasco a lot, until the minute 62, when Vasco forward Diego Souza threw this incredible opportunity away. Had he scored, Corinthians would need 2 goals in 30 minutes. Corinthians kept pressing, until Paulinho scored the winning goal at '87.
In the semi-finals, the current Copa Libertadores champions, Santos, with Neymar, Ganso, Elano & co., would be a tough opponent. But, playing away, Corinthians' Sheik opened the score at '27 with this nice goal. Cássio made this good defense at '57, and this other one at '80. In the 2nd leg, Neymar opened the score for Santos at '35, but Danilo scored for Corinthians at '47, as the match ended 1-1, with Corinthians qualified to their 1st Copa Libertadores final.
In the big final against Riquelme's Boca Juniors (Argentina), who were chasing their 7th title, Corinthians would play the first match in Argentina. Boca opened the score at '72, but Romarinho equalized at '84, after Paulinho took the ball from Riquelme. Boca still had time to hit the post at '90. In the 2nd leg in São Paulo, Sheik opened the score at '53 and scored the 2nd at '71, after a juvenile mistake by Boca. At '92 the match was over, and Corinthians were crowned Copa Libertadores champions for the first time, and undefeated.
2012 Club World Cup - Corinthians 1-0 Chelsea
After beating Al-Ahly (Egypt) 1-0 in the semis, with this goal from Paolo Guerrero, Corinthians was ready to face Chelsea, the European champions, in the final. 30.000 Corinthianos invaded Japan for this unique moment.
Cássio (GK) saved Corinthians at least 4 times, notably with this one. But at '68, after a confusion inside the box, Paolo Guerrero scored the only goal of the match. At '84, Fernando Torres lost this 1on1 opportunity, brilliantly saved by Cássio. At '94, the match ended, and Corinthians were crowned Club World champions for the 2nd time in their history.

2013-today
After these brilliant days, Corinthians remained on the top tier of Brazilian and South American football. They completed an International Treble in 2013 after winning the 2013 Recopa Sudamericana, won two more notable Brasileirão titles (2015, 2017), and also four more state leagues (2013, 2017, 2018, 2019). Their new arena was also concluded, in 2014.
Aqui é Corinthians!!! (This is Corinthians!!!)
To this day, Corinthians has a fanbase of 30 million supporters, and a stadium attendance average of 33.000, as of 2019.

2020.07.24 16:21 kjmichaels FIF Book Club: August is Crossover Month with the HEA Book Club!

Hello FIFers,
This month, the FIF and HEA book clubs will be teaming up to discuss feminist romance fantasy.
The purpose of this post is twofold. First, to make sure everyone knows what's going on. Second, sadly, a post cannot be in two collections at once so this will be a placeholder post for the FIF collection since we will be running this month's discussion through HEA. Links will be provided below as they are available:
Voting post - voting lasts through July 27! You can also vote by clicking here.
Official Book Announcement - Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri
Midway discussion post
Final post

WHAT IS FIF?

Feminism in Fantasy (FIF) is an ongoing series of monthly book discussions dedicated to exploring gender, race, sexuality and other topics of feminism. The /Fantasy community selects a book each month to read together and discuss. Though the series name specifies fantasy, we will read books from all of speculative fiction.
You can participate whether you are reading the book for the first time, rereading, or have already read it and just want to discuss it with others. Please be respectful and avoid spoilers outside the scope of each thread.

MONTHLY DISCUSSION TIMELINE

  1. A slate of 5 themed books will be announced towards the end of the month. A live Google form will also be included for voting which lasts for a week.
  2. Book Announcement & Spoiler-Free Discussion goes live in the first few days of each month.
  3. Halfway Discussion goes live around the middle of each month.
  4. Final Discussion goes live a few days before the end of each month.
Dates may vary slightly from month to month.

2020.07.21 18:47 thequeensownfool HEA & FIF Book Clubs: Vote for our August Read!

What is the HEA Bookclub? You can read the introduction post here. Short summary: Happily Ever After (HEA) is a fantasy romance focused bookclub reading books that combine both of these genres.
What is FIF Bookclub? You can read the introduction post here. Short Summary: Feminism in Fantasy (FIF) is an ongoing series of monthly book discussions dedicated to exploring gender, race, sexuality and other topics of feminism.
This August we are combining for a mega book club! The theme is feminist romance, looking at how the genre is a depiction of radical happiness. I'd like to include a slightly modified quote below that I've seen around the internet in various places but cannot find the original to properly credit. (Please note that although this quote talks about cis women, I also want our clubs to celebrate nonbinary, trans, and other queer folks getting their happily ever after).
Women who read romance novels just want to read about being loved the way women are expected to love everyone else—with a nurturing and protective form of unswerving loyalty.
There are many romance novels that are just for fun, and many feminist novels that are very serious. But I've always thought it's a type of radical happiness and form of feminist self-care to pick up a book and read a story where the characters break the cycle of unhealthy relationships and find happiness in a way that is rare and/or denigrated in literature.

We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia

At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children, but both are promised a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her bright future depends upon no one discovering her darkest secret—that her pedigree is a lie. Her parents sacrificed everything to obtain forged identification papers so Dani could rise above her station. Now that her marriage to an important politico’s son is fast approaching, she must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society, where famine and poverty rule supreme.
On her graduation night, Dani seems to be in the clear, despite the surprises that unfold. But nothing prepares her for all the difficult choices she must make, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio. Will Dani cling to the privilege her parents fought to win for her, or to give up everything she’s strived for in pursuit of a free Medio—and a chance at a forbidden love?
Bingo Squares: Romance, Feminist, Book Club (HEA & FIF)

Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal

Jane and her sister Melody vie for the attentions of eligible men, and while Jane’s skill with glamour is remarkable, it is her sister who is fair of face. When Jane realizes that one of Melody’s suitors is set on taking advantage of her sister for the sake of her dowry, she pushes her skills to the limit of what her body can withstand in order to set things right—and, in the process, accidentally wanders into a love story of her own.

Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri

The Amrithi are outcasts; nomads descended of desert spirits, they are coveted and persecuted throughout the Empire for the power in their blood. Mehr is the illegitimate daughter of an imperial governor and an exiled Amrithi mother she can barely remember, but whose face and magic she has inherited.
When Mehr’s power comes to the attention of the Emperor’s most feared mystics, she must use every ounce of will, subtlety, and power she possesses to resist their cruel agenda.
Should she fail, the gods themselves may awaken seeking vengeance…
Bingo Squares: Romance, Feminist, Book Club (HEA & FIF)

Miranda in Milan by Katharine Duckett

After the tempest, after the reunion, after her father drowned his books, Miranda was meant to enter a brave new world. Naples awaited her, and Ferdinand, and a throne. Instead she finds herself in Milan, in her father’s castle, surrounded by hostile servants who treat her like a ghost. Whispers cling to her like spiderwebs, whispers that carry her dead mother’s name. And though he promised to give away his power, Milan is once again contorting around Prospero’s dark arts. With only Dorothea, her sole companion and confidant to aid her, Miranda must cut through the mystery and find the truth about her father, her mother, and herself.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father’s kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her whole world is torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran’s queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar’s wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire…
But Akaran has its own secrets—thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most…including herself.

2020.07.20 09:59 majinmattossj2 Brazilian Big12 series, Episode 2/12: Vasco

Previous episodes: Flamengo
In this series I will present each of the 12 Brazilian teams that together compose the "Big 12". My point is to make them more knowledgeable to you, since each one of these teams have their share of the Brazil national team success and of Brazilian club football accomplishments as a whole. I'll try to be as smooth, efficient and non-boring as I can. If the feedback is positive, I'll keep bringing more to this series. So ok, let's do this!
Method: I'll present the teams in a chronological order, from the oldest foundation (Flamengo-1895) to the latest one (São Paulo-1930). The order will be: Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense, Gremio, Botafogo, Atletico Mineiro, Internacional, Corinthians, Santos, Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, Sao Paulo.

Episode 2/12: Vasco (State: Rio de Janeiro), founded in 1898

State rivals: Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo

Stadium: São Januário (Capacity: 21.880)

Mascot: The Admiral

Major achievements: 1 South American Championship of Champions (1948), 1 Copa Libertadores (1998), 4 Brazilian Leagues (1974, 1989, 1997, 2000), 1 Copa do Brasil (2011), 1 Copa Mercosul (2000)

State League titles: 24 (Against Flamengo's 36, Fluminense's 31, Botafogo's 21)

PLAY AND LISTEN TO VASCO'S ANTHEM WHILE READING - Click here
Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer who found a sea route to India in 1498, and Vasco, the Rio de Janeiro sports club founded by Portuguese immigrants in 1898
Vasco da Gama (1460 or 1469-1524) was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea, creating the first link between Europe and Asia by an ocean route, and marking the beginning of a sea-based phase of global multiculturalism.
Before Da Gama, other explorers had reached South Africa, but failed in discovering the eastern part of the African continent. Da Gama and his 170 men, however, went beyond the Cape of Good Hope as you can see in his sea route, and made it to India, thanks to the famous Arab navigator Ibn Majid he met in Kenya, who led them there.
In 1898 Rio de Janeiro, a group of Portuguese immigrants founded this sports club in Vasco da Gama's honor, 400 years after he had reached India and changed the world: his sea route to India would be honored with a diagonal white stripe in Vasco's crest, with a black background color referring to the unknown seas of the Orient, and a red Cross, dedicated to the religious Order of Christ.
The Football Club and the pioneers against racism
As most Rio de Janeiro sports club of the late 1890s, rowing was Vasco's first sporting activity, until a football department was created in 1915, so they could start at the 3rd division of the Rio de Janeiro State League (Carioca League), until they reached the 1st division in 1923.
However, their great football results at their first season in the Carioca 1st division would be overshadowed by elite club's protests against their black, brown, portuguese and even white, but poor, players. To avoid playing Vasco multicultural players, elitist and racist clubs of the time (like their rivals Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo) decided to form a parallel league, without Vasco, which would nevertheless last only one season.
Since Brazil's national league would only be created in 1959, the State Leagues were the main tournaments, where most Brazilian great players would be formed and then sent to the National Team. Vasco would be facing 3 main rivals at the State League, namely Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo, and also very traditional teams and World Cup feeders like Bangu, América and São Cristóvão. So, please, be respectful about the Brazilian State Leagues, because they were a big deal back then, and so it was until the 1980s. In the 1920s and 1930s, Vasco managed to win 5 State League titles, and provided Brazil with 7 players for the 1930, 1934 and 1938 World Cups.
1940s: the Victory Express
The first big era of Vasco came in the 1940s: between 1945 and 1952 they won 5 State League titles (3 of them unbeaten), and very notably the South American Championship of Champions in 1948, the direct and official precussor of the iconic Copa Libertadores, created in 1960, and also the inspirer of the European Cup, created in 1955. Vasco represented Brazil as the Rio de Janeiro State League champions of 1947, and played against the national champions of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, in a round-robin system, all matches taking place in Santiago, Chile.
1948 South American Championship of Champions
Dates Matches
14/02 Vasco 2-1 Litoral/BOL
18/02 Vasco 4-1 Nacional/URU
25/02 Vasco 4-0 Deportivo Municipal/PER
28/02 Vasco 1-0 Emelec/ECU
08/03 Vasco 1-1 Colo-Colo/CHI
14/03 Vasco 0-0 River Plate/ARG
Vasco would face the 23 year old Di Stefano's River Plate in the last match, needing a draw to be crowned champions. In the first half, Vasco had a legitimate goal disallowed, and at the end of the second half, a penalty was given in River Plate's favor, but Labruna's shot was saved by goalkeeper Barbosa, thus guaranteeing Vasco's first continental trophy. Two years later in 1950, however, Barbosa would fall in disgrace after conceding the 2nd and World Cup-winning goal to Uruguay at minute 79, in a full Maracanã with 200.854 spectators - even if it wasn't really Barbosa's fault (28s video).
According to ClubWorldRankings.com, Vasco was the 2nd best team in the world in the 1940s, second only to the Italians of Torino. However, it is important to remember that European football was partially suspended in this decade due to the 2nd World War.
The show must go on! Vasco 4-3 Real Madrid, Vasco 7-2 Barcelona, and more (1957/58)
In the 1950s, with the addition of eventual World Cup stars Vavá and Bellini, Vasco's State League title finally came in 1956, after 4 years.
Regarded as South America's best team, Vasco was invited to prestigious friendly tournaments in France and Spain, in 1957. Vasco won the Tournoi de Paris against Di Stefano's, Gento's and Kopa's Real Madrid in the final, at a full Parc des Princes with 40.000 spectators in Paris, France. They beat them 4-3, with Vavá scoring once. French newspaper France Soir would report that "Real Madrid isn't the world's best team. About that, speak with Vasco". Some of the match highlights (including a struggle at 2-2) can be seen here (2mn39s video).
This South American victory inspired UEFA and Conmebol to create the Intercontinental Cup in 1960, in order to test the European champions against their South American counterparts.
Vasco would then win the Tereza Herrera, beating Bilbao 4-2, with 2 goals from Vavá.
Ten days later, a sonorous 7-2 against Copa del Rey champions, Barcelona, at Les Corts, Barça's former stadium. According to this Catalan newspaper's art, it was a racial football lesson from the black brazilians. Vavá scored twice.
In 1958, Vasco finally won the prestigious interstate Rio-Sao Paulo tournament in 1958, after finishing 2nd four times, and notably beating Pele's Santos 1-0. They also won the 1958 State League.
Vasco and Brazil World Cups in the 1950s
Vasco also had their share in great World Cup campaigns from Brazil, notably the trophy-winning one in 1958. In the table below you can see all World Cup players provided from Vasco to Brazil in 1950 and 1958, notably Ademir in 1950, and the 1958 champions Bellini (captain) and Vavá (2nd topscorer, with 5 goals).

The Roberto Dinamite Era (1971-1992)
This man's name speaks for himself. Dinamite numbers are mental: he scored 708 goals in 1110 matches for Vasco. He's the only brazilian player, alongside Pelé and Rogério Ceni, with more than 1000 matches for the same team in Brazil.
Dinamite played in a very stacked Brazilian League: names like Rivellino, Falcão, Zico, Sócrates, Cerezo, Careca, Bebeto, Romario, were spread in many different teams, making things more difficult to all of them. He was however able to win one Brazilian League in 1974, notably beating Pele's Santos, Falcao's Internacional and Dirceu's Cruzeiro on the finals, and also collect 5 State Leagues during his 19 seasons at Vasco. He was the Serie A topscorer in 2 editions and elected to the Best XI three times (1979/81/84). His best goalscoring season was 1981, when he scored 62 goals, and he is, to this day, the highest topscorer of the Brazilian Serie A, with 190 goals.
Dinamite would be part of the Brazil NT at the 1978 and 1982 World Cups. He didn't play in 1982, but found his way into the starting 11 in 1978: he had his first chance in the third and decisive group game against Austria, scored the winning goal (47s video), and played all 3 matches on the next group stage, scoring 2 more goals, both against Poland. Brazil lost to Argentina on the goal difference (8-5), and was eliminated in a very controversial way, due to Peru very strangely losing (1mn46s video) 0-6 to Argentina in the last group match.
A young named Romario
If Brazil still couldn't win a World Cup since the mighty 1970 team, and not even a Copa America since 1949, Vasco had been upbringing the solution for both problems. Not only he had a name, but also a provoking character: Romario made his professional debut in 1985, at the age of 19. With only 1.67m, Romario -nicknamed Shorty- played as a centre-forward, and scored 139 goals in 196 matches in the 4 seasons he spent at Vasco (1985-88), before being sold to PSV for US$ 6 million. He won, alongside Dinamite, 2 State Leagues and was Brazil's topscorer with 7 goals at their runner-up campaign at the 1988 Seoul's Olympic Games. Romario would go on to win the 1989 Copa America and the 1994 World Cup, ending Brazil's both titles drought.
Bebeto, the 1989 Brazilian League title and 3rd best player in the world
Curiously enough, both Romario and an old Dinamite left Vasco from the mid to the end of 1988: the former to PSV and the latter to Portuguesa, on a one-year loan. Without their incredible duo, Vasco bought the Flamengo and Brazil star Bebeto, who played as a forward, was 25 years old, and managed to lead Vasco to the Brazilian League title of 1989, beating Sao Paulo 1-0 (1mn10s video) in the final. Indeed, Bebeto had an outstanding 1989 season: champion and topscorer of the 1989 Copa America, elected best player in Brazil by Placar Magazine, best player in South America by El País Newspaper and 3rd best player in the world by World Soccer Magazine, beating names like Maradona, Baresi, Romario and Laudrup, but behind Gullit and Van Basten. Bebeto scored 10 goals in 18 matches for Brazil that year.
The 1990s Golden Era: the Brazilian NBA League and Vasco all-star squad
The 1990s was a great decade for almost all of Brazilian big teams, and it wasn't different with Vasco. They collected 2 continental titles, 2 Brazilian Leagues, 1 interstate Rio-Sao Paulo tournament and 4 State Leagues. In a country with at least 12 big teams, it's quite a notable achievement.
Vasco had an absurd collection of top level talent in this decade, at a time when Brazilian talents would stick around longer, or not even go to Europe. The Brazilian League was decided in play-offs, and had pretty much the north-american NBA vibes, in both matters of talent and format. The 1990s is considered the last decade of brazilian "root football", in the sense of being high-leveled and with an oldschool attitude. In the table below, a list with the notable players that have been at Vasco in the 1990s.

Special note to Dener, Brazilian gem that died in a car accident at 23. Maradona's reaction in this Vasco-Newell's Old Boys friendly in 1994 says it all. Dener got a standing ovation from the entire Argentine public when subbed off, and from Maradona aswell, who made sure to greet him at the end of the match.
Vasco began the 1990s winning an unprecedented three consecutive State League titles (1992/93/94) in the last years of Roberto Dinamite, Bebeto and Bismarck. The Rio de Janeiro State League of 1992 saw the upcoming of folkloric forward Valdir Moustache and of a future world class player, Edmundo, who scored 24 goals in 32 matches in his first professional season at the age of 20, also having his first chance at the Brazil NT.
It would be between 1997 and 2000 that Vasco big campaigns and titles would take place. In the 1997 Brazilian League, led by a fierce Edmundo who demolished the tournament with 29 goals in 28 matches, winning the title and the Brazilian Golden Ball. The final was against a stacked Palmeiras, that had 5 World Cup-winning players, and specially the number 10 Alex, the wronged. After two 0-0 ties, Vasco secured their 3rd Brazilian League title.
The Eternal Glory: the 1998 Copa Libertadores
In 1998, year of the club's centenary, Vasco won the State League, and also their 2nd continental trophy, the epic 1998 Copa Libertadores. Vasco went unbeaten in the knockout stage (5W-3D), defeating Dida's Cruzeiro, Ronaldinho's Gremio and the Argentines from River Plate before facing Barcelona de Guyaquil in the final. Highlights to the semi-final between Vasco and River Plate: in the first match in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil NT goalkeeper Carlos Germano made the difference with a very difficult save from Gallardo's (current River Plate coach) free-kick, thus securing Vasco the 1-0 victory.
Epicness at its greatest would happen in the 2nd leg between Vasco and River Plate, at the Monumental de Nuñez stadium, in Argentina. With River Plate winning it 1-0 and taking the match to extra time, at minute 81, Juninho Pernambucano scored this magnificent goal (59s video) from his trademark style, the free-kick. It would be considered, until today, the most important and memorable goal in the whole history of Vasco da Gama.
In the final against Barcelona de Guyaquil, Donizete opened the score with a tremendous shot (8s video) from the outside of the area, and future World Cup-winner Luizão closed it 2-0 (11s video) at home. The second match was a walk in the park, with the Cariocas winning 2-0 (first with Luizão, and then with Donizete) at half-time, and 2-1 at the end of match, therefore winning Vasco's first Copa Libertadores, and second continental trophy, after the South American Championship of Champions in 1948.
Victories against Manchester United and Santos, but huge deceptions against Real Madrid, Corinthians, Palmeiras and Flamengo
Despite dominating Real Madrid in the 2nd half, Vasco lost 1-2 to them at the 1998 Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo. Highlights to Juninho Pernambucano and his beautiful equalizer, at minute 56.
After a great centenary year, Vasco didn't perform as expected in 1999, winning only an interstate Rio-Sao Paulo tournament, beating Santos in the final. In 2000, Vasco finished 2nd three times in the first 6 months: in the Club World Cup to Corinthians, in the interstate Rio-Sao Paulo tournament to Palmeiras, and in the State League to Flamengo. Highlights to Edmundo amazing play and goal (1m05s video) in their 3-1 win against Manchester United in the Club World Cup group stage.
The greatest comeback in Brazilian football history: the 2000 Copa Mercosul final, and the 2000 Brazilian League title
After demolishing River Plate in the Copa Mercosul (2nd tier continental cup) semi-finals, Vasco would meet again with Palmeiras, that they had beaten in the 1997 Brazilian League final, but got knocked off by them of the 1999 Copa Libertadores in the ro16.
First match, in Rio de Janeiro, Vasco 2-0 Palmeiras. Second match, in São Paulo, Vasco 0-1 Palmeiras.
Third match forced, again in São Paulo, at the Palestra Itália stadium, December the 20th.
Both teams needed this title to save their traumatic seasons. While Vasco had already lost 3 finals in the same year, Palmeiras had lost the Libertadores finals to Riquelme's Boca Juniors, in the penalties, in what could have been their first back-to-back titles in the tournament.
The match started, and well, at half-time, Palmeiras were already leading it 3-0. In the second half, with 2 penalty goals from Romario at 59 and 68, Vasco were back to it, but had their CB Junior Baiano sent off at 77. Nevertheless, Juninho Paulista tied it at 85, and Romario completed his hat-trick with this goal at minute 93, Vasco thus being crowned the 2000 Copa Mercosul champions.
The season, however, wasn't finished yet. Vasco played the 1st leg of the Brazilian League final on the 27th December, ending in a 1-1 draw against Sao Caetano. After 150 people got hurt in an accident in the 2nd leg on the 30th December, the big final was rescheduled to January 18th 2001. On this day, Vasco beat Sao Caetano 3-1, with goals from Juninho Pernambucano, Jorginho Paulista and Romario. It was the 4th Brazilian League title in Vasco's history, and the end of a glorious era.
2001-today
Unfortunately, Vasco has been through more downs than ups since then, being relegated 3 times to the Serie B (2008/13/15), a negative record among the Brazilian big teams. The only seasons they've been able to replicate their glorious days were in 2011/2012, when they won their first Copa do Brasil in 2011, finished 2nd in the 2011 Brazilian League, reached the semi-finals of the 2011 Copa Sudamericana (continental 2nd tier cup) and also the quarter-finals of the 2012 Copa Libertadores.
To this day, Vasco has the 5th largest fanbase in Brazil, with around 10 million supporters spread across the country, and a stadium attendance average of 18.000, as of 2019.

2020.07.13 11:59 majinmattossj2 Brazilian Big12 series, Episode 1/12: Flamengo

In this series I will present each of the 12 Brazilian teams that together compose the "Big 12". My point is to make them more knowledgeable to you, since each one of these teams have their share of the Brazil national team success and of Brazilian club football accomplishments as a whole. I'll try to be as smooth, efficient and non-boring as I can. If the feedback is positive, I'll keep bringing more to this series. So ok, let's do this!

Rio de Janeiro. Copacabana. Samba. Futebol. Flamengo.
Maybe no other team in Brazil has adopted so well their own city like Flamengo have. Their gigantic fanbase--the biggest in the country, in the continent, and how their fans like to brag, the biggest in the world--took football attendances in Brazil to another level. But how did Flamengo go from being just another recently-founded sports club to become this football power in Brazil, with a fanbase of 40 million supporters?
The first explanation people tend to give to this is Zico, the White Pelé, eternal idol of this club, who scored impressives 826 goals (516 official) in 23 years of his career as a midfielder. But long before Zico's arrival at Flamengo in 1971, the red-black team had been enjoying the status and alias of "most adored club in Brazil" for decades. If it wasn't Zico that made Flamengo so popular in a first time, who (or what) was it?
Flamengo was founded like any other sports club in the 1895 Rio de Janeiro, focused first in rowing, and later joining the country's new trend, football, in 1911, after a cission in Fluminense's football department made some players look for a new place to restart. As these former Fluminense footballers used to go quite much to Flamengo to watch rowing and had friends there, they decided it was the perfect place to start a new football department in the city. The Flamengo Football Department was created, aswell as their rivalry with Fluminense. They played in the State League (alias Carioca) for the first time the following year, in 1912.
It was later in the 1930s that Flamengo shifted from being a refined, elitist and exclusive club to become a popular and inclusive one, inspired by the rising of political populism and nationalism in Brazil that eventually resulted in a Coup d'État in 1930. Combined with the professionalization of the sport in Brazil in 1933 and the rising interest of the popular classes in the sport, the 1930s context favored Flamengo in standing for the popular urban workers, unlike their elitist rival Fluminense. This is the major factor at the core of Flamengo's huge fanbase growth in Rio de Janeiro, and later, across the country.
The firsts World Cup star players
It was also in the 1930s, in 1936, that Flamengo was joined by who would become their first star players, CB Domingos da Guia and FW Leonidas, both part of the Fifa World Cup All-Star Team of 1938. Leonidas was also elected best player of the World Cup, besides being the topscorer with 7 goals. Leonidas left Flamengo for Sao Paulo in 1941, and scored 545 goals in 616 matches in his entire career.
In 1939, another forthcoming World Cup Golden Ball winner joined Flamengo, his name was Zizinho. He played as a midfielder and is considered the successor of Leonidas and predecessor of Pelé. Zizinho spent 11 years in Flamengo, notably winning an unprecedented three consecutive Carioca League between 1942-1944. Due to a lack of a national tournament in Brazil until 1959, the State League was Rio de Janeiro's most important title, disputed by 4 big teams--Flamengo and their 3 rivals, namely Fluminense, Vasco and Botafogo. The State League also had traditional teams like America, Sao Cristovao and Bangu, all of them supplying Brazil in the 1930, 1938, 1950, 1958, 1962, 1966 World Cups--so, please, show some respect to the Brazilian State League, that was very far from being the farmer's league it is today. That being said, Zizinho left Flamengo for Bangu in 1950, at the age of 29 and before the World Cup, in the most controversial transfer of the decade.
After Zizinho's departure in 1950, Flamengo would struggle in the State League, until they managed to get once again a three consecutive title streak between 1953-1955. The great forward's Evaristo de Macedo arrival in 1953 was indeed of great help to Flamengo's roster, until he left in 1957 to shine for 5 seasons at Barcelona--therefore not being called ever again to the Brazil NT, for playing abroad.
But before Evaristo left Flamengo for Barcelona, he had the chance to play against one of the best teams in the world, the notable Budapest Honvéd:
Date Match Venue Scorers
19/01/1957 Flamengo 6-4 Honvéd Maracanã (Brazil) Evaristo and Puskas (2), Henrique, Paulinho, Dida, Duca, Szusza and Budai (1)
27/01/1957 Flamengo 4-6 Honvéd Pacaembu (Brazil) Puskas (4), Dida (2), Kocsis, Moacir, Henrique and Budai (1)
02/02/1957 Flamengo 2-3 Honvéd Maracanã (Brazil) Evaristo, Henrique, Budai, Kocsis and Szusza (1)
07/02/1957 Flamengo/Botafogo 6-2 Honvéd Maracanã (Brazil) Evaristo and Dida (2), Puskas, Kocsis, Garrincha and Didi (1)
16/02/1957 Flamengo 5-3 Honvéd Caracas (Venezuela) Evaristo (3), Budai (2), Puskas, Moacir and Dida (1)
19/02/1957 Flamengo 1-1 Honvéd Caracas (Venezuela) Puskas and Evaristo (1)
Highlights to the combined between Flamengo and Botafogo that made it possible for world class players of the caliber of Garrincha, Didi and Nilton Santos play on the same side as Evaristo and against the great Hungarians, also as a rematch of their duel at the 1954 World Cup QFs. A few months after these matches, both Flamengo and Honvéd teams were dissolved, with their players moving to Palmeiras, Corinthians, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
In 1961, Flamengo won the prestigious but now extinct Rio-Sao Paulo Tournament, where only the big teams from the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro were allowed. It was their first and only title in 26 editions of the tournament, that was a big deal until the 1960s (before the consolidation of Brazil's national league in the 1970s).
However, the 1960s were a relatively weak decade for Flamengo. With Santos and Palmeiras dominating the recently created National League%29), and Botafogo dominating the Rio de Janeiro State League (which would only qualify the Champion to the National League), Flamengo highlights were just 2 State Leagues, 1 Rio-Sao Paulo Tournament and the call-up of 3 of their players to the 1966 and 1970 World Cups, notably Brito, CB and starter in the 1970 World Cup.
The Zico Era (1971-1989)
The 1970s and the 1980s decade would nevertheless make up for any previous difficult time the red-black Flamengo had gone through in their history. The Zico Era lasted on the pitch from 1971 to 1989, but will last forever on the books, filmography and memories of this celebrated and gigantic club.
Arthur Antunes Coimbra, alias Zico, was born in 1953 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. As a matter of fact, it is not surprising that he was born in the biggest talent pool of Brazil, the city of Rio de Janeiro, also known as The Wonderful City. Most non-brazilian people probably don't know that the great majority of Brazil's football legends were born and raised in this same city of Rio de Janeiro. Before there was Zico, there were Leonidas, Zizinho, Nilton Santos, Didi, Garrincha, Gerson, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto Torres.. and after the man, the same city of Rio brought to the world the talents of Romario, Ronaldo Nazario, Adriano, Marcelo.. I must say that some of these guys together would make a respectful State League 11.
Zico made his professional debut in 1971 at the age of 18. He played 18 seasons for Flamengo between 1971 and 1989, but also made a short move to Italian Serie A team Udinese from 1983 to 1985. In these 18 red-black years for Flamengo, the Little Rooster scored 589 goals in 826 matches, averaging 33 goals per season. He won Flamengo 7 State Leagues (Cariocas), 4 National Leagues, 1 Copa Libertadores and 1 Intercontinental Cup.
To be honest, of all these 13 titles Zico and Flamengo won through the 1970s/80s, the most "easy" was probably the 1981 Copa Libertadores. Brazilian players stayed in Brazil at that time, so our State and National Leagues were both at a very high level. Basically, almost every big team had their world class player, namely Zico's Flamengo, Rivellino's and Parreira's Fluminense, Da Guia's Palmeiras, Falcao's Internacional, Socrates' Corinthians, Cerezo's and Eder's Atletico Mineiro, Careca's Guarani/Sao Paulo, Romario's and Roberto Dinamite's Vasco, Piazza's Cruzeiro and also a very good Gremio team. I didn't even mention names like Bebeto, CA Torres, PC Caju, Junior, Leandro, Figueroa, Mazinho, Reinaldo... crazy days. Most of these guys just lacked the World Cup title to be remembered more often.
Pos. Brazilian League 1980s Italian Serie A 1980s

AM Zico, Socrates, Paulo Isidoro Maradona, Platini, Baggio, Laudrup, Rijkaard
FW Romario, Bebeto, Roberto Dinamite, Careca, Éder, Müller Van Basten, Paolo Rossi, Careca, Rummenigge, Müller
In the comparison above between Brazil's and Italy's 1980s leagues, the Italian Serie A certainly had some of the best talents and a bit more depth overall, but Brazil's League firepower isn't far behind and would make an even adversary in a match dispute.
The point is that it was crazy how Zico stood out of this crazy crowd of world class players for almost two decades. He was elected to the Brazilian Serie A Best XI 5 times (1974/75/77/82/87), Best Player twice (1974/1982), and topscorer twice (1980/82). He was also topscorer of the State League 6 times and once of the 1981 Copa Libertadores.
Flamengo and Zico feats and records
Among Zico feats and records, we can highlight a few: he scored 89 goals/76 matches in 1979, he is the topscorer of the Maracanã stadium (333 goals), he is the world's topscorer as a midfielder (516 official goals), 3 times South American POTY and 5th highest topscorer of the all-time Brazilian Seleção.
Flamengo provided 7 players to the Brazilian NT in the World Cups during this Zico Era (1974/78/82/86). However, unlike Santos' and Botafogo's 1950s/60s generation, they failed to bring the thophy home, leaving at the SF in 1974/78 and at the QF in 1982/86. The 1982 generation (5mn46s video) would forever be remembered as a beautiful symbol of the Futebol-Arte that couldn't win.
However, Flamengo could indeed win the world title that the Brazil NT couldn't. In 1981, in what is considered Flamengo's greatest moment of all-time, they beat Liverpool 3-0 in Tokyo, for the Intercontinental Cup. It was just another master display from Flamengo's maestro number 10 Zico, that had been delighting the Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian and South American Leagues since 1974, being finally crowned with a world title. The English side had won 3 European Cups in the previous 5 years, but had yet to prove themselves against a team from South America in the Intercontinental Cup: they refused to play the Argentine side Boca Juniors in both 1977 and 1978. As expected, the English side had their confidence high, but it took Zico only 45 minutes to wrap the game up with 3 assists that set the game 3-0 in Flamengo's favor at half-time. The Liverpool team was helpless against Zico and were lucky enough not to leave with an even more embarassing score. Liverpool coach Bob Paisley admitted defeat, however, not without giving poor excuses. The truth is, in the 1980s the English teams played 4 times their South American counterparts in Tokyo, and lost all of them without scoring a single goal: Liverpool (twice), Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa were the victims.
Sidenote: Zico vs. Maradona
Before Maradona cemented himself as one of the GOAT, there was the debate over who was the best player of their generation (and also Platini). They played against each other 5 times, with 4 wins for Zico and 1 draw. Zico is, however, 7 years older than Maradona.
Year Match Tournament Goals+Assists
1979 Rest of the World 2-1 Argentina International Friendly Z:1+1, M:1+0
1979 Brazil 2-1 Argentina Copa America Z:1+1
1981 Flamengo 2-0 Boca Juniors Friendly Z:2+0
1982 Brazil 3-1 Argentina World Cup Z:1+2
1985 Udinese 2-2 Napoli Serie A M:2+0
Flamengo 1990-2018: Petković, Romario, Adriano, Ronaldinho, Diego Ribas..
After Zico's departure to Japanese football in 1989, Flamengo lived through ups and downs between 1990 and 2018. In this period, Flamengo won 2 international titles, 2 national leagues, 4 national cups and 12 state leagues. In a country with 12 big teams, it isn't that bad. Highlights to the 1992 Brazilian League title against rival Botafogo at the Maracanã with 122.001 spectators; to Romario's 204 goals in 5 seasons (1995-99) and his historical Elastico and goal against Corinthians in 1999; to their three consecutive State League titles 1999-2001 won against their now archrival Vasco that had world class players like Romario, Juninho Pernambucano, Juninho Paulista, Edmundo and Viola, with Serbian player Petković scoring the winning goal from a crazy free-kick at the last minute (52s video); to the 2009 Brazilian League title led by former Internazionale star Adriano, taking the lead of the tournament only 2 rounds to the end; to their first woman Patricia Amorim to be elected President in 2010; to Ronaldinho's 18 months long passage at the club, notably in 2011 staying 6 months undefeated with his team (38 matches, 31W-7D) and also scoring a hat-trick against Neymar's Santos in an incredible match (10mn37s video) with a Puskas-winning goal (32s video) from Neymar; and to the President Eduardo Bandeira de Mello (2013-2018) who restructured Flamengo's finance, signed players like Diego Ribas, Diego Alves, Everton Ribeiro, Paolo Guerrero, and finished 2nd in major tournaments like 2017 Copa Sudamericana, 2017 Copa do Brasil and 2018 Brazilian Serie A.
2019: the fire incident and the new era of Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus
In February 2019, a tragic fire incident killed ten U17/U15 players from Flamengo youth system at the club's dormitory. Flamengo was held responsible, given that they didn't have the required permits of the building.
Following this very sad episode, the team had to keep going, and in June 2019 they hired the Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who had the mission of making this very expensive team play better. After 56 matches to this day, Jorge Jesus collected 42 wins, 10 draws and only 4 defeats, with a win rate of 75%. He led Flamengo to win 4 out of 5 major titles they disputed, namely 2019 Brazilian Serie A, 2019 Copa Libertadores, 2020 Brazilian Supercup and 2020 Recopa Sudamericana, losing only to Liverpool 0-1 on extra time at the 2019 Club World Cup revenge of their 1981 Intercontinental Cup dispute, when Flamengo won 3-0.
Highlights to the epic 2019 Libertadores Final against Argentine side River Plate, who were winning it 1-0 until the 89th minute, when Gabigol scored the tie after a great play from Bruno Henrique (59s video). At the 92nd minute, Diego Ribas sent an air through ball from Flamengo's defensive side that reached the same Gabigol, who in middle of 2 River Plate's CB, found his way out to score Flamengo's second and trophy winning goal (46s video), after a 39-year wait for this continental title.
Welcome to Flamengo 2019/20 goals/skills/assists - DESPACITO - Line-up of this memorable team: Diego Alves, Rafinha, Rodrigo Caio, Pablo Marí, Filipe Luis; Willian Arao, Gerson, Arrascaeta; Everton Ribeiro, Bruno Henrique, Gabigol. Subs: César, Rodinei, Thuler, Rhodolfo, Rene, Piris da Motta, Diego Ribas, Vitinho, Vinicius, Reinier, Lincoln, Berrio.
Players out (2020): Reinier (Real Madrid), Pablo Marí (on loan, Arsenal), Rodinei (on loan, Internacional)
Players in (2020): Pedro (on loan, Fiorentina), Thiago Maia (on loan, Lille), Pedro Rocha (on loan, Spartak Moscow), Gustavo Henrique (Santos), Michael (Goias), Leo Pereira (Athletico)
To this day, Flamengo has the largest fanbase in South America, with 40 million supporters, and a stadium attendance average of 53.000, as of 2019.

2020.06.28 22:09 extra-plus-ordinary Advice for all incoming 2nd year students in lifesci

Link to incoming 1st years here (2019)
lmao let's do this again
This post is for those who have finished first year and are going into their second. I've just finished up 2nd year, so most of my info is up to date-no, I still don't know much about grad school/med school.
First of all, damn you're still here. I'm going to assume that everyone reading has gotten into PoSt so I don't have to explain 2nd round entry or whatever it's called (but if you need me to just comment). I'm going to start with a few basic questions.
1. Is 2nd year hardeeasier than 1st year?
Although the answer may vary across students, I find that, academically, 2nd year is significantly harder than 1st year. We have all more or less lost that 'Oh I learned this in high school' cushion, and everything is new information. They also pack a lot more info into the classes; in first year, a whole week would be spent on a particular topic (albeit broken up into 3 classes), but in 2nd year every class is usually something new, so slacking/skipping is not really something you can regularly do. To make it worse, many of the heavy hitting courses needed for most lifesci programs are only available in 1st semester, so be prepared for a bad time. Like, a really bad time.
However, the good news is that at this point you probably have the rest of your uni life figured out (I hope). You hopefully also have good study habits by now because you're gonna need them. It's really gonna be all about time management at this point.
2. What courses will I need to take?
This will depend on your majors/specialists, but most of you will be taking the same things first semester (except for people in Pysch; you guys have completely different courses). The courses are:
BIO230
HMB265
BCH210
STA220/PSY201 (PSY201 is only allowed if you've taken PSY100)
PSL300
You do not need to take these all at once; rather, it's probably better if you don't, especially if you have other big commitments (i.e part time job, clubs). The workloads in these classes aren't very kind, and attempting to do all at once can be taxing. I know many people who were forced to drop one or two classes to keep their GPA above water, and still others who worry that the semester will affect their chances for med/dentistry school. You cannot CNCR these classes, they are program requirements. Even if you have no other commitments, please pick one course to do n third year or in the summer (PSL300 is a good bet as its a 300-level course.)
They are also known to be placed very close to each other come exam season; this year, STA220 & PSY201 were on Dec 7, BCH210 was on the 10th, HMB265 on the 11th, and PSL300 on the 13th, with BIO230 on the 17th. 2 years ago, BCH210 and PSL300 were back to back (one in the evening, the other in the morning right after). These classes were all memorization heavy, so you can see how horrible this is.
However, if you feel that you have good time management skills and/or have no other time-consuming activities, by all means, give it a shot; it's much nicer to get them all out of the way.

In general, here are some tips for each class;

BCH210-This class was a nightmare for us due to how the tests were done. We had three profs, but only one (Patterson) wrote all tests; and by wrote I mean actively attempted to murder 1000 students. The final exam (this was non-cumulative) was actually fair, as she taught that last section. I believe she will be teaching the whole class next year, so all you need to do is memorize EVERYTHING. Every detail, every little event, everything. You will most likely not want to take a BCH course after this.

N.B-If your Gr. 12 teacher taught you the Crebs Cycle/Glycolysis in detail, you will be thanking them.

HMB265- My opinion of this course is radically different from most, probably because I really, really like genetics. I will try to be unbiased, but try searching for posts about the course.
This course is generally taught by Prof. Naomi Levy-Strumf in the first half and Prof. Belinda Chang in the second half. The first Prof is the sweetest, kindest person ever; she stayed up until 1 AM on Thanksgiving answering our questions on Quercus as we had a midterm that week. She goes a bit fast though, so you might want to record, or just ask her afterward. There is generally a lot of probability questions and pedigrees in this section, so it's in your best interest to actually do the homework assigned, as it's a big help when it comes to tutorial quizzes and the midterm. If you've taken Data Management in Gr 12, or had a teacher that made you do a God awful amount of Punnett squares in Gr 11, this will be a major help as the probabilities won't be a huge problem for you. You don't need the textbook here (save for homework)
The second Prof is a little less polished. Prof Chang, while a nice person, is not the best teacher. To put it mildly, she'll talk a lot but not say anything, if you get my drift. The textbook is a big help here, as it's generally good at explaining concepts that you may not have understood in class. While past years have complained that Prof Chang tests textbook material, I have found that to not be true and that sticking to lecture slides (and their affiliated textbook pages if necessary) is enough to do well.

STA220/PSY201-Oh boy. I will be talking mainly about STA220, as that is the course I opted to take (take STA220, they said, it'll be fun, they said), but from what I've heard PSY201 is easy, just do the work assigned.
Now. STA220 is a weird course because (at least this year) it's taught like an 'inverted classroom' (like MAT135/136), so you watch some videos/read a week in advance and complete a quiz (for marks), and then you go to class and learn what you should already know. Oh, and there's participation marks.
The prof we got this year was a GEM, straight out of her PhD and she tried her damn best to have us understand what she was doing. The lecture slides are actually helpful if you didn't get it yourself, plus she goes through questions to help you understand. Her midterm was also super easy.
The final exam is not fully written by the prof that taught us. STA220 is a huge class and is broken down into sections depending on your department (LifeSci, real Stats, etc.) and they all have different profs, as well as a course coordinator. For the final, every prof submits questions to be used on the test-and out of 50 questions, only 8 were from my prof. We had access to past tests and they were quite unfair, usually being very stringent on the wording. I spent hours in office hours with my professor, and even she couldn't solve them sometimes due to wording alone. TA hours were also quite bad-I went to ask the TA for some help, and he had to tell me he didn't know much about the course and that his English wasn't very good, so he couldn't help even if he wanted to.
I did fine on the final, mostly because I grinded all those past tests, but many others do horribly. I know of at least 3 separate people who went from 90s to 60s/50s because of this final. The course average isn't too low, though, so I wouldn't say it's impossible to do well. Just understand the content and use past tests, and you should be fine.

BIO230- Literally just BIO130 but different content. Yip is back at it again, bless. If you can only learn with Yip, he teaches the evening class and the second half of the morning class.

3. What is second semester like?
Varies from major to major, as that is when most introductory courses to the major begin. However, a few popular ones are:
BIO220
PSL301
CHM247
PSY202/STA221
I haven't taken any of them, so I can't speak for them.
4. Now that we have departments, is it easier to reach out to profs?
I feel like it is. I tend to be shy so I haven't talked at length with my professors, but when I have interacted with them about Neuroscience or Genetics they seem to be really happy that we're interested in their field. Some profs are really invested in helping their students; one of my professors offered to introduce us to anyone in the department that we were interested in if we were too shy to do it ourselves. It especially becomes easier once you get into the course (like halfway?) because by now you can hold a conversation about the topic and ask questions. (If any third-year students know more please comment :) )

5. Can I still have a social life in 2nd year?
It will be easier to maintain your social life if your friends are in the same programs as you are. Since we've all been separated into programs, it can be kind of hard to find overlap in some schedules, especially after 1st semester is over. This doesn't mean that your friendships will wither and die; it just means that you can't count on seeing them as often as you once have.
I would suggest trying to make friends in whatever programs you're in; this is good for study purposes at the very minimum. You'll probably be able to see your program friends right up until you graduate, so they're nice to have!

That's it lol

I don't really have any more general tips for this year, but feel free to comment a question below

Link to Facebook Q&A
Questions about dates (release dates, schedules, etc.)
Question Answer
Q: The old servers are getting a mini event that is summer themed. Are we planned to get that in August since July's major event is Isomer? A: Yes the summer themed event will be held after Isomer ends.
Q: Are we gonna have two collabs the rest of the year? A: I'm afraid that it's not something I can either confirm or deny right now. Please wait for future announcements.
Q: For Python. What event or closest time we would be able to get her again ? A: There will always be a chance for her to return, so please stay tuned.
Q: When will the firework base background be added to the friendpoint shop or made available again? it's been almost 2 years ;p A: Yes, this base background will get a rerun in the future.
Q: Any timeframe on the client update? JP is getting it very soon. A: I'm afraid that we are unlikely to get it in a month or two. Aside from the possible improvements and fixes we are waiting for, there are also a considerable amount of new texts to be translated.
Q: With PA-15 now released, is Furball Academy now within foreseeable future? A: I'm afraid that it's not something I can either confirm or deny right now. Please wait for future announcements.
Q: Will M4A1's costume from that point event return? A: I think you will need to wait for a while.
Q: Still waiting for Girls Music Club resupply, any chances it'd be happening this year? Been waiting over a year... A: I'm afraid that it's not something I can either confirm or deny right now. Please wait for future announcements.
Q: Can we expect a double dose of swimsuit gacha this summer? A: I'm afraid that we don't have a similar plan for now.
Q: When will Gr HK33 come to EN? A: Please stay tuned.

Gameplay related questions
Question Answer
Q: Will there be a way to move the adjutant on the main menu screen? Some T-Dolls are way to low so you can't really see them, defeating the purpose of having them as an adjutant, I guess! A: Yes, this feature will be included in the new client update.
Q: any plans to add monthly resources? A: I don't think we have any plans for monthly resources card.
Q: Is there a way or chance to make a suggestion for a line in a tdoll launched recently in CN? It would be funny to hear SAF say "que wea" when it gets to EN or something like that in reference of the country of origin A: I'm afraid that this isn't something I can reveal, as nothing relevant has been revealed in old servers.
Q: Any chance of an option to add units to Repair automatically? A: I'm afraid that we don't have a similar plan for now.
Q: Any chance we could get a "Sort by - Equipped" in the HoC Chip menu? If I choose "Sort by Enhancement Level", equipped chips that are not enhanced are still scattered all over the chip list and are tedious to find. A: I'm afraid that it's not something I can either confirm or deny right now.
Q: Is there any performance improvement coming for the current chip interface? It is allgy even on a emulator. Do you have in mind a way to have dolls as 'favorites' so they stay at the top of the list, making it easier to pick my most used dolls? A: I'm afraid that it's not something I can either confirm or deny right now.
Q: In the process to destroy chips on garage we have the smart select but only chose 2 or 1 star chips can you put a filter to select 3,4 and 5 star chips? that would help much more to dismantle or destroy the chips. A: I'm afraid that it's not something I can either confirm or deny right now.
Q: Any way we can swap resources? Got like 235k manpower vs like 5k ammo and it's killing me. A: Unfortunately, I don't think such a feature will be possible for the current game structure.
Q: Mod 3 Tiss when? A: I'm afraid that this isn't something I can reveal, as nothing relevant has been revealed in old servers.
Q: Will we get 2nd exclusive T-doll like Jp sever in the future ? A: I'm afraid that we don't have a similar plan for now.
Q: Can commander costume pieces have a sale after the initial release sale or is it just that one time? A: I think it's a time-limited sale.
Q: chance of Live2d HOC 2B14? since BGM and AGS get live2d, i think 2B14 should get it too. A: I'm afraid that this isn't something I can reveal, as nothing relevant has been revealed in old servers
Q: any chance of event dolls becoming TCMable? Might ease grinding the same event map for hundred of times. A: We will have T-Doll welfare system to exchange limited drops in Isomer maps.
Q: Will we ever be able to refill one doll in an echelon? I’m sure corpse dragging isn’t much of a secret by this point. A: Unfortunately, I don't think such a feature will be possible for the current game structure.

Misc Questions
Question Answer
Q: with multiple spinoffs and a direct sequel announced, are there any release windows currently being planned/being talked about regarding these games? A: I'm afraid that this isn't something I can talk about.
Q: What happen if you login into cellphone and Emulator PC at the same time? Is that true your account will be banned bc of that? A: The game is only playable on the recent login device, and you won't be banned because of such reason.

2020.06.15 16:59 WhiteHawk1022 Halfway done with my 2020 Book Bingo card! Some short reviews of the books I've read so far.

Here's my Book Bingo card to date: https://imgur.com/a/0tJP2BE
This is my first time participating in the challenge and I'm loving it so far. It's helping me expand my reading horizons and find a deeper sense of community among this sub (you all are great!).
Order of reviews: right column (down); bottom row (across to the left); diagonal (bottom-left to top-right)
REVIEWS
Ace/Aro: All Systems Red by Martha Wells (4/5) [HARD MODE]
This was a fun, quick read. I didn’t expect to empathize so deeply with a cyborg, but Murderbot’s cynicism is right up my alley.
Fantasy Book Club: All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace (4/5) [HARD MODE]
I enjoyed the dark magic and nautical setting, but the plot was fairly predictable. This story seemed to share a lot of similarities with The Legend of Korra, which I think factored into why I liked it so much. More thoughts can be found in the book club discussion thread.
Book About Books: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde (3/5) [HARD MODE]
I wanted to like this book...I really did. The humor didn’t land for me, and the narrative didn’t feel particularly cohesive (particularly with the interspersed parts about the Crimean War). I haven’t read Jane Eyre, so maybe that played into it, too (although I don't think it's a prerequisite for reading this book).
Canadian Author: Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames (5/5)
I gushed about this book in one of the daily recommendation threads. Such a fun read. Chock-full of lovable characters, action, and humor. I’m definitely going to read Bloody Rose.
Featuring Politics: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (3.5/5) [HARD MODE]
It took me a while to get around to this book. I read the first two last year but wasn’t motivated to dive straight into the conclusion. I liked the parts about political unrest and revolution, but the love triangle got exhausting after a while. I’ll probably read the recently-released prequel, but I’m not in any rush to do so.
Graphic Novel: Saga, Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan (5/5)
I don’t know what to say beyond the praise that’s already been heaped on this series. It’s unique...it’s heartfelt...it’s action-packed...it’s compelling. I’m reading the other volumes between books for Bingo. I’m hopelessly addicted!
Magical Pet: Guards! Guards! By Terry Pratchett (4/5)
Huzzah! I finally read a Terry Pratchett novel, and it won’t be my last. This was a great introduction to Discworld. I laughed out loud several times, but I wanted to go with a “hard mode” pick for that square, so “magical pet” it is! Does anyone know where I can find an Errol? So many Discworld adventures await!
Romance: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (5/5)
This was on my to-read list for a long time. The prose was beautiful, and I loved the dark, whimsical atmosphere of the story. This is the kind of book I hope to write someday. I can’t wait to get my hands on The Starless Sea.
Number in the Title: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (4/5)
This book was a BLAST! I loved all the pop culture references, but I did feel like I was being beaten over the head with them at certain points. Some of the allusions to films, video games, and TV shows seemed like they were in there just for the sake of being there, and didn’t play any role whatsoever in the story or plot. I didn’t feel deeply connected to the characters either. Nonetheless, a solid 4/5 for its inventiveness and pacing.
Five Short Stories: The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury (5/5) [HARD MODE]
Ray Bradbury is a master. There are so many classics here: “The Veldt,” “The Rocket Man,” “Kaleidoscope,” and more. My favorite was “The Long Rain”—I’m not sure I’ll ever look at a downpour the same way again. This anthology also exposed me to Bradbury’s writing about race (“The Other Foot”) and religion (“The Fire Balloons”).
Published in 2020: The Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood (4/5) [HARD MODE]
I was lucky to get my hands on this from my local library. It’s not often that I read stories from the perspective of an orc. I hope there’s a bit more worldbuilding in the sequel, but I liked the magic, religious elements, and love subplot.
Color in the Title: Jade City by Fonda Lee (5/5) [HARD MODE]
Organized crime? Yep. Magic? Uh-huh. Family drama? Oh yeah. Lots of action? Hell yes. Awesome book. Read it if you haven’t yet. Even if you’re not too keen on urban fantasy, give it a try. I’m absolutely going to read the follow-up, Jade War.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler is on deck for the "Feminist" square. After that, I think I'm going to read Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke to fill "Big Dumb Object." I considered The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan for that one (it's been on my to-read list for a while), but I don't think I'm ready to invest in The Wheel of Time just yet.
Happy reading, everyone!

After stumbling upon this sub I remembered a girl on YouTube who would play/make fun of really bizarre games aimed at kids. The games depict popular female characters such as Disney Princesses in various, graphic/fetishy situations.
I did some digging and here is an example of one of the more bizarre ones where Elsa has suffered from an "accident" (she looks beaten up) and is pregnant: https://youtu.be/UR7PikD8lTI
There are A LOT of these cheaply produced games that depict Barbie or Disney Princesses having suffered from "accidents" and in needing of being fixed up. There's also a lot of pregnancy games where you have to perform c-sections among other tasks that are odd for kids to be doing.
The websites these games are hosted on are easily googleable and often show up on the first page of search results. For instance, "Elsa Frozen Game" will return a few of these sites. The websites are all designed to look happy, bright, and pink like most websites aimed at young girls.
Any thoughts on this? Do you find anything wrong with these games knowing they are geared at kids or am I just overreacting?

About the mission

SpaceX's eight mission of 2020 will be the launch of the Crew Dragon Spacecraft on its Demonstration Mission 2 (DM-2) to the ISS as part of NASA's program for Commercial Crew Transportation Capability. Demo-2 is the final major test for SpaceX’s human spaceflight system to be certified by NASA for operational crew missions to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX is returning human spaceflight to the United States with one of the safest, most advanced systems ever built, and NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is a turning point for America’s future in space exploration that lays the groundwork for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Official mission overview

On Saturday, May 30 at 3:22 p.m. EDT, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launched Crew Dragon’s second demonstration (Demo-2) mission from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This test flight with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on board the Dragon spacecraft returned human spaceflight to the United States. Crew Dragon will autonomously dock to the International Space Station at about 10:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday, May 31.

Crew Dragon

Crew Dragon, designed from the beginning to be one of the safest human space vehicles ever built benefits from the flight heritage of the current iteration of Dragon, which restored the United States’ capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo to and from the International Space Station. Dragon has completed 16 missions to and from the orbiting laboratory. To support human spaceflight, Crew Dragon features an environmental control and life support system, which provides a comfortable and safe environment for crew members. The spacecraft is equipped with a highly reliable launch escape system capable of carrying crew to safety at any point during ascent or in the unlikely event of an anomaly on the pad. While the crew can take manual control of the spacecraft if necessary, Crew Dragon missions will autonomously dock and undock with the International Space Station. After undocking from the space station and re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, Crew Dragon will use an enhanced parachute system to splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean.

2020.04.25 16:02 bigbear0083 Wall Street Week Ahead for the trading week beginning April 27th, 2020

Good Saturday morning to all of you here on smallstreetbets. I hope everyone on this sub made out pretty nicely in the market this past week, and is ready for the new trading week ahead.
Here is everything you need to know to get you ready for the trading week beginning April 27th, 2020.

Stocks face headwinds as investors look forward to a big earnings week, a Fed meeting and state reopenings - (Source)

The stock market is struggling to make headway, as a big week of events rolls around, including a Federal Reserve meeting, the first look at post-shutdown economic growth and earnings from more than a fifth of the S&P 500 companies.
It’s a busy week for earnings, and some of the biggest blue chips are likely to join the growing list of companies withdrawing guidance amid the uncertainty of how the coronavirus and shutdowns are impacting their business. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Boeing and McDonald’s are among about 140 S&P 500 companies reporting first quarter results.
Investors will also be watching the progress of the reopening of business activity in some states, like Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma and South Carolina. At the same time, President Donald Trump said he may extend social distancing guidelines into early summer. Many states, including the hardest hit, remain completely shut down.
Stocks were higher Friday, but the major indices had their first negative week in three as oil prices cratered and then steadied in the mid-teens. The S&P 500 has been trading on both sides of the key 2,800 level, as investors focused on murky corporate outlooks and uncertainty surrounding the timing of the reopening of the economy. Even though several states are resuming some activities, Trump said he disagreed with Georgia’s plan to reopen.
On Friday, the S&P closed at 2,836, down 1.3% for the week.
Earnings for the first quarter have been bleak so far, down about 14% based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Second quarter results are expected to be far worse, declining 32.2%.
“If you take a look where the real battle is in the market, it’s a fundamental story,” said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at Credit Suisse. “The fundamentals are that the market should be lower, and on the other hand, the Fed is kind of putting their thumb on the scale in favor of the market.”
Golub said it’s the potential for recurrences of the outbreak that’s being watched to see if businesses can remain open once they start back up. “People are watching what’s going on in places like Georgia, but they’re also watching what’s going on in Singapore and places in Asia that are opening up,” he said. “At the end of the day, there’s really one thing that really matters. It’s not the Fed. The virus is going to own the agenda, whether we want it to or not.”

Fed bazooka

The Fed meets Tuesday and Wednesday, and while it’s not expected to take any new action, it will likely discuss the many programs it quickly rolled out to support the economy and provide liquidity.
“I’m anticipating no actions in terms of anything with purchases or interest rate movements,” said Luke Tilley, chief economist at Wilmington Trust. “I think we’re going to hear a lot more in terms of their description of what’s working and the things that still need to happen.”
Tilley said the Fed’s job is also to instill confidence, and its asset purchase and other programs to support mortgages, corporate credit and municipal bonds, helped bring back in spreads that had been widening out across the credit markets. “It looked like we were headed for a seizure in credit markets, but they’ve come back in,” he said, adding he expects the Fed to also discuss programs like its support for the small business lending program.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is also expected to sound optimistic about the central bank’s ability to help the economy, despite the uncertainty as the economy falls into an unprecedented decline in the second quarter. Tilley said he expects the economy to contract in the second quarter by 40%.
Golub said this Fed meeting isn’t as important as others have been, since the central bank has already taken so many extraordinary policy steps and promises to do more as needed.
“The Fed has made it clear if they need to provide liquidity to the market, they’re not going to wait for a meeting to do it,” he said. “Whether you’re borrowing from a bank or whether you’re borrowing in the capital markets, that capital is available so the economy can move ... the net effect is it also pushes the stock market up.”

Economic impact

First quarter gross domestic product numbers are expected Wednesday, and it will be the first look at how the early weeks of the shutdown impacted the broader economy. Forecasts are wide ranging, and the consensus forecast from Refinitiv is now for a contraction of 4.1%. Economists expect the second quarter to take the biggest hit of the recession, and it is forecast by many to show a contraction of more than 30%.
Some of the early second-quarter data will be released in the coming week. Vehicle sales slowed to a trickle in April, and auto makers shut down production.
The impact of that should show up in Friday’s April vehicle sales and ISM manufacturing, but the single-most important data point will be Thursday’s weekly jobless claims, expected again to show millions of workers signed up for unemployment benefits.
So far, 26.5 million unemployment claims have been filed in the last five weeks, wiping out all the job gains made since the end of the Great Recession. The employment report for April will be released on May 8, and economists say unemployment will likely peak in April or May before falling off.
“We’ll probably see an unemployment rate at 20% or a little higher,” Tilley said.

Earnings

Earnings reports are expected from a range of industries, such as tech, health care, energy and defense. Merck, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Humana and Anthem are among health care names reporting. Big oil companies, Exxon Mobil and Chevron both release results on Friday, and their comments on how they are reacting to the shocking decline in crude oil prices this past week will be important.
An oil futures contract for May dove into negative territory Monday and Tuesday, as did prices in many spot markets. That contract expired Tuesday, and the June futures contract for West Texas Intermediate settled at $16.94 per barrel Friday, down about 7.3% for the week and about $5 lower than the price of Brent futures.
“The most important earnings story is not what happens this quarter, It’s how long does it take to get back to peak earnings again,” said Golub. “My estimate is this is going to take three years to get back to peak profits. But the estimates right now are reflecting that it’s going to turn back to normal by something closer to the third quarter of next year. I think that’s too optimistic. The second part of the earnings story is how fast estimates are coming down.”
He said first quarter earnings per share look to be down a little more than 12%, though some estimates have them down 16% or 17%. “We had 10 very healthy weeks and three not healthy weeks. The fact you could have such a negative quarter with only three bad week, that’s really bad.” Golub said. His forecast is for a 40% decline in second quarter profits.

Election-year Mays: DJIA’s Second Worst Month

May officially marks the beginning of the “Worst Six Months” for the DJIA and S&P. To wit: “Sell in May and go away.” Our “Best Six Months Switching Strategy,” created in 1986, proves that there is merit to this old trader’s tale. A hypothetical $10,000 investment in the DJIA compounded to a gain of $1,068,826 for November-April in 69 years compared to just $1,461 for May-October. The same hypothetical $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 compounded to $823,326 for November-April in 69 years compared to a gain of just $9,537 for May-October.
May has been a tricky month over the years, a well-deserved reputation following the May 6, 2010 “flash crash”. It used to be part of what we called the “May/June disaster area.” From 1965 to 1984 the S&P 500 was down during May fifteen out of twenty times. Then from 1985 through 1997 May was the best month, gaining ground every single year (13 straight gains) on the S&P, up 3.3% on average with the DJIA falling once and two NASDAQ losses.
In the years since 1997, May’s performance has been erratic; DJIA up eleven times in the past twenty-two years (three of the years had gains in excess of 4%). NASDAQ suffered five May losses in a row from 1998-2001, down – 11.9% in 2000, followed by twelve sizable gains in excess of 2.5% and five losses, the worst of which was 8.3% in 2010. Election Year Mays rank at or near the bottom, registering net losses on DJIA and S&P 500 (since 1952), NASDAQ (since 1972) and Russell 1000 and 2000 (since 1980).

LPL Office Talk: Putting The Rally In Perspective

One month ago today the S&P 500 Index bottomed after a vicious bear market. Was this the ultimate bottom? We’ll have to wait and see, but what we do know is the rally we’ve seen over the past month is nearly as historic as the drop coming into it was.
“We recently had the best 20-day rally for the S&P 500 since March 2009 and one of the best ever,” explained LPL Financial Senior Market Strategist Ryan Detrick. “Looking back at the previous best 20-day rallies, one thing is consistent: very strong returns going out a year.”
As shown in the LPL Chart of the Day, the 10 previous best 20-day rallies for the S&P 500 saw continued gains after some near-term volatility. In fact, six months later stocks were higher 9 of 10 times and a full year later higher 10 of 10 times.

Why The Recent Strength Has Bulls Smiling

The huge equity rally continued last week, with the S&P 500 Index up another 3%, on the heels of adding more than 15% in the previous week. The gain during the past two weeks of 15.5% was the greatest since October 1974. Taking it a step further, the 15 trading days ending April 14 saw the S&P 500 up more than 27%, one of the greatest rallies ever. What we’ve been seeing is truly historic, so the big question now is: What could happen next?
“This remarkable rally has caught most off guard, but what might surprise many to hear is more gains could eventually be in store in 2020,” explained LPL Financial Senior Market Strategist Ryan Detrick. “When we’ve seen similar blasts of extreme short-term strength, stocks have been quite strong going out 6- to 12-months.”
As shown in the LPL Chart of the Day, the S&P 500 was up nine of 10 times six months later and higher every single time a year later after the previous best 15-day gains ever. Be aware though, some of the returns in the near-term were weak, suggesting a pullback after such a strong move is likely. Still, this much strength in such a short timeframe could very well suggest the rest of 2020 could have bulls smiling.

Dogs of the Dow Performance So Far in 2020

The average stock in the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 16.24% on a total return basis so far in 2020. Below we take a look at how the "Dogs of the Dow" strategy has performed so far this year.
The "Dogs of the Dow" strategy is a very passive approach that simply says to buy the 10 stocks in the Dow 30 that have the highest dividend yields at the start of each year. The Dogs list for 2020 was led by Dow Inc. (DOW) with a yield of 5.12% on January 1st. Exxon Mobil (XOM), IBM, Verizon (VZ), Chevron (CVX), Pfizer (PFE), 3M (MMM), Walgreens (WBA), Cisco (CSCO), and Coca-Cola (KO) are the nine other members of the Dogs for 2020.
As shown in the table below, the Dogs are down an average of 19.37% on a total return basis in 2020, which is a little less than five percentage points worse than the 14.68% decline seen for the 20 non-Dogs this year. Dow Inc. (DOW) and Exxon Mobil (XOM) have been the two worst performing Dogs with respective YTD declines of 39.9% and 37.0%. Dow's dividend yield has risen from 5.12% up to 8.47%, while XOM's yield has risen from 4.99% up to 7.91%. There are no Dogs that are up on the year, but Verizon (VZ) and Pfizer (PFE) have been the best performers of the group with YTD declines of less than 5%.
Of the non-Dogs, Boeing (BA) has been by far the worst performer with a YTD decline of 60.01%. At the start of 2020, BA had a dividend yield of 2.52%, but that dividend has been suspended. JP Morgan (JPM), American Express (AXP) and Disney (DIS) have all fallen more than 30% YTD, while Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Walmart (WMT), and Microsoft (MSFT) are the only three Dow stocks that are up on the year.

Investors Giving Companies a Pass on Earnings So Far

We're now two weeks into the Q1 2020 earnings season, and just over 200 companies have reported their numbers so far. The average one-day price change for the stocks that have reported earnings so far this season has been a gain of 0.89%. That's much stronger than the average one-day gain of 0.06% seen for all stocks that have reported earnings since 2001.
As shown below, stocks that have beaten EPS estimates this season have averaged a one-day price gain of 2.16% on their earnings reaction days. That's stronger than the average one-day gain of 1.89% seen on earnings reaction days for all stocks that have reported since 2001. Stocks that have missed EPS estimates this season have seen a one-day decline of 0.72% on their earnings reaction days. Historically, the average stock that has missed EPS has fallen 3.56% on its earnings reaction day, so this season's decline of just 0.72% suggests that investors are basically giving a pass to companies missing estimates in Q1.

Next Week's Economic Indicators

Even though most economic data releases this week that had forecasts exceeded those estimates (10 of 15), data continues to come in very weak. The Chicago Fed’s National Activity index started off the week coming in at –4.19 which was well below estimates of –3. Existing home sales followed up on Tuesday, and despite coming in above estimates, sales slowed considerably from February. Elsewhere in housing data, new home sales collapsed down to 627K SAAR compared to 765K last month. Meanwhile, February home prices showed some acceleration. Jobless claims also were better than expected, but they too remain at extremely elevated levels relative to the rest of history. Manufacturing data was a major area of weakness this week. Both the preliminary Markit PMI and Kansas City Fed reading fell significantly despite coming in better than forecast. Hard manufacturing data on Friday was likewise bad at the headline level though under the hood there were some silver linings.
Turning to next week, like the earnings calendar, the economic calendar ramps up with a total of 34 releases. We will get the final two regional Federal Reserve indices from Dallas and Richmond on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, followed by the final Markit and ISM reading for April on Friday. Wednesday will be the most closely watched day of the week with the first release of Q1 GDP as well as an FOMC rate decision. Growth in the first quarter is expected to show a 3.8% contraction. Although no change in rates is being forecast, Fed Chair Powell’s following presser will likely be closely watched for a monetary policy update.

Biggest Companies Reporting Earnings Next Week (AAPL, AMZN, MSFT and More)

The earnings calendar has begun to ramp up over the past two weeks and over the next two weeks we will see peak earnings season. Next week there are a total of 784 companies scheduled to release earnings. Of those, there are 178 S&P 500 stocks, which is 35.% of the index.
In the table below we show the 30 largest stocks (by market cap) that are scheduled to report next week. None of the largest stocks report on Monday, but the two Dow pharmaceutical stocks, Merck (MRK) and Pfizer (PFE), kick things off Tuesday morning. The trillion dollar market cap club will all report next week with Microsoft (MSFT) out with earnings Wednesday night and Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN) out the following evening. Two other notable releases Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, will be the major payment processors Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA). Friday will be capped off with two oil giants: Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX). Other honorable mentions not on this list reporting next week include industrial bell-weather Caterpillar (CAT), stocks likely benefiting from the COVID economy like Colgate Palmolive (CL) and Clorox (CLX), and finally, some travel and leisure stocks like Expedia (EXPE), Royal Caribbean (RCL), United Airlines (UAL), and Southwest Airlines (LUV).

Gold Bounces Right Where It Was Supposed To

With central banks around the world unleashing waves of liquidity, there have been heightened concerns that one result will be a decline in the purchasing power of our money. For that reason, a number of investors have been flocking to gold. Even before the COVID-19 crisis, gold prices had been in a solid uptrend, and while prices spiked as the crisis first began, they couldn't quite get above the $1,650 - $1,700 range. In mid-March even, prices plummeted with just about every other financial asset before quickly recovering. Once again, though, the rally stalled at resistance. This time around, though, the 50-day moving average was strong enough to provide support and after that test, gold finally got the long-awaited breakout that investors had been waiting for.
Gold's price spiked as high as $1,787 per ounce in mid-April before running out of momentum. When a stock or commodity breaks out above resistance to new highs and then pulls back, the former resistance level should act as support, and that is exactly what we saw this time around. This week, gold bounced right on cue at around $1,700 and has since rallied 2.6%. With the first test of support proving successful, look for gold to now establish a new range with a floor at around $1,700. At least that's what the technical analysis textbooks would say.
