2020.09.23 00:57 AnakinWayneII Preston Timothy Peyton Roberts III's resume is very impressive indeed and the DIA will be lucky to have him

Preston Timothy Peyton Roberts III is sat in a building belonging to the DIA in a remote unnamed location and can see that the recruiter is nodding approvingly whilst reading his resume.
"Impressive stuff here, very impressive stuff," the recruiter murmurs approvingly. "How did you find the culture of Harvard different to that of Princeton?"
"I thought Princeton was a little more relaxed to be honest..." Preston trailed off.
"Mhmmm," the recruiter murmured approvingly.
Preston Timothy Peyton Roberts III fidgeted uncomfortably. The whole recruitment process had been quite secretive, quite hushed up, quite dangerous, like a lover's tryst, only the lovers were of the same gender - and one of them was underage. You see, the DIA was a fairly secretive government agency with "little oversight" and "an unknown budget" - even more disconcerting considering that Preston Timothy Peyton Roberts III, with his colorful background in finance, would be getting himself involved in the Agency's "budget".
The recruiter murmured approvingly again several times as he continued to study the resume in front of him, entry by entry, word by word, date by date.
Finally, he stopped murmuring, took off his square spectacles, blinked several times and then looked up at Preston Timothy Peyton Roberts III.
Silence.
Preston blinked back nervously.
The recruiter blinked at Preston several times and frowned.
Preston blinked back and did not say a word.
The recruiter blinked again, several times.
Finally, the recruiter broke the uneasy silence.
"Mr Roberts...it says here that between June 2023 and August 2024, you were travelling across China and Mongolia. Why?"
"Why?"
"Yes - why?"
"Holiday."
"Okay, thanks for clarifying."
The recruiter put his spectacles back on and began inspecting the resume again, murmuring approvingly now and then.
The DIA will be lucky to have Preston Timothy Roberts III joining the team - very lucky indeed.

What do you think of this essay that estimates the factors involved in female mating preferences?
Part I
Few questions are as important as the following: what selection pressures are humans facing, and are they eugenic or dysgenic? In other words, are we evolving or devolving? Of central importance to this question is the practice of human reproduction: children are produced when a man fucks a woman. The genes that lead to fucking, therefore, are the genes that are being selected for. So what genes are these? Who gets laid?
It does not suffice to use anecdotes. Sure, they may be correct at the end of the day, but on the other hand they may not be. Therefore let us approach this topic scientifically; no dudebro philosophy about game and muscles and whatever else here. Besides, men are hardly unified on what they think their anecdotes signify: one hopeful man will say it’s all about game, while another pessimistic man will say it’s the face, yet another will say muscles, and another money, et cetera ad infinitum.
Let us phrase the question scientifically: what factors explain what proportion of that variance in male romantic success? This question implies that the club scene will not be analyzed. Women may choose differently for one night stands than they will for a reproductive partner, and most children are intended or at least with a monogamous partner in the age of birth control and abortion.
Looking into the scientific literature on this question is quite frustrating. Frankly, it’s quite bad and I have only been able to unearth a few studies that offer only hesitant, partial answers. Yet the available evidence does allow a few important facts to be clear, and with sufficient reasoning other facts can be inferred. Probably the best study relevant to the question was one published in 2017 that asked women to rate men based on a photo and one of three descriptions of three traits each that were intended to be highly desirable, desirable, or less desirable. The women gave ratings for physical attractiveness, behavioral desirability, and dating desirability. It was found using multiple linear regression analysis (MLR) that sr2 was 0.55 for physical attractiveness and .20 for personality rating on the average. This means those two ratings alone accounted for 75% of the variance in dating desirability scores and that physical attractiveness accounted for 55% of that variance by itself, or in other words it accounted for 55% of the variance after factoring out its covariance with personality score and so on for the personality score. One interesting thing to note is that they also asked the same thing to the mothers of the women and found that physical attractiveness accounts for about 33% of the variance and personality accounts for about 40% of the variance in regards to how much the mothers desires their daughter to date the given man. This means that in traditional days, it can be inferred, at least according to this study, that reputation mattered much more than looks.
And let me comment on the word I used in the last sentence: reputation. That is precisely what the women and mothers were rating. This is, in essence, a component of social status and not direct behavior or “game” ability, and this is further evidenced by the fact that the men were described using reputation words - “trustworthy”, not “interesting”, mature, not “easy to get along with”. They were described in ways that their community as a whole would think of them, not in ways that are specifically meant to bring to mind the way the man will treat the woman. So being generous, we can say that direct behavior might account for the missing variance and maybe a small part of the reputation variance, meaning it might be as high as 30% but no higher. On the other hand, it could still be conceivably as low as 0% based on this single study.
What do other studies show? One type of attraction study seems to indicate that attraction has little to do with direct behavior, or in other words the personality that the woman experiences. These studies typically simulate dating in a controlled fashion and ask the participants the degree to which they would like to go on another date with whoever they met. One study published in 1966 found “The correlation between liking of the date and evaluation of the date's physical attractiveness is .78 for male subjects and .69 for female subjects” (4). The subjects’ looks were rapidly rated by four random raters, meaning that it is unlikely that the ratings were inflated or deflated by personality. R2 for women, then, is about 0.5, which means that about 50% of the variance in female desire to see the male date again can be explained by the male’s physicality alone. This is obviously in line with the findings of the 2017 study, meaning that this result has been replicated half a century later. The 1966 study also gave personality tests to the subjects: masculinity correlated with the female wanting to see the male again at r = 0.12, extroversion at r = 0.10, good manners at r = .12, and “self-acceptance” (confidence) at r = .14. In other words, variance in being a super-wacky extrovert, having good manners, acting “masculine”, and being confident account for essentially none of the variance in if the male is wanted by the female again. The study concluded that out of the metrics they scored, only physical attraviness predicted the women wanting to see the men again.
Another study from 2009 essentially replicated this finding (6). This study had the participants fill out tests to measure personality and then had them participate in a speed-dating event where each male met ten females and vice versa. Physique was pre-rated by each researcher with high reliability (intercorrelation = 0.86). These pre-rated scores correlated at r=0.88 (r2 = 0.77) with the extent to which the female wanted to see the male again after the date. Men were allowed to seduce, display IDGAF and abundance attitudes, and generally mog for five minutes. Still, “interest in sport activities” (r = 0.48, r2 = 0.23), which probably covaries with the physique pre-ratings (as I will explain), and physique were the only predictive variables. Big 5 traits correlated at most at r = 0.26 but were not statistically significant (p < 5%). One interesting thing to note is that the sample consisted of college students with an average age of 19; Interest in sportsball might have functioned as a serious reflector of status since women generally cannot gauge status based on jobs and money when it comes to 19 year old college students yet. Fresh out of high school, they were likely still influenced by propaganda that designates the sportsball players as high-status and popular.
As far as I have found, these studies are the cream of the crop when it comes to those which attempt to estimate the factors that predict male romantic success. Despite the field being quite barren, conclusions can still be drawn considering all of the studies have more than adequate statistical power and each agrees with one another. Physical attractiveness matters the most: each study estimates its predictive power at at least half the variance. Status matters, but less than physique. Direct behavior, or personality, explains little to none of the variance. This does not mean that a 5/10 trainwreck, anxious autist couldn’t get more girls if he somehow improved his social skills, but it indicates that game doesn’t work or is at least extremely rare within the samples. It does show that more natural differences in personality traits, ranging from extroversion to confidence, matter very little. Given that much of game consists of essentially telling guys to be more extroverted and confident, these studies suggest that that aspect of game is bogus.
Based on these results, I predict that if I were to run my ideal experiment and find how much variance physique, direct behavior, and status explain, I would see about 60%, 5%, and 35% respectively. Let us then apply the knowledge of this educated estimation on a number of hypothetical cases. Case 1: a man who is 5’8” with a 50th percentile face and a typical, skinnyfat body shape. He is somewhat introverted and has a few close friends, and is in university. He comes to me for my sage-like wisdom and asks, “O, wise one, what shall acquireth me the womb?” There are only two questions to ask him: “are you autistic?” and “do you have social anxiety?”. When he answers no to both, I give him my knowledge: “do thou worketh out and build thy muscle, and go on and gaineth thou status. Then the womb shall be for thee.” If his direct behavior is not an absolute trainwreck, if he is not a terrible autist, then no amount of confidence-game will help him. He already has sufficient confidence: if he didn’t, the variance in direct behavior would explain more of the variance in romantic success because a large number of men would be capitalizing off this easy “biohack”. Women don’t like him because he’s an overall 4/10 physically and has no status because he has few friends, no fame, and no money. Approaching 100 random women will most likely net 99 to 100 rejections by his looks alone. The ugly girls that go on one date with him will friendzone him when they find out he doesn’t like sports and he has 2 friends. And so Case 1 goes on, gets ripped, and makes some more friends and some notoriety and finally he finds a woman. Case 2: a 6’2” man who has been working out for a year and has something to show for it, with an average to above average face, approaches and says, trembling, “What do I do? I have been following the advice you gave Case 1 for a year and still I have no girlfriend.” I ask my questions, and he responds, “I-I have a lot of confidence issues and a lot of social anxiety with women.” He makes no eye contact and his voice is monotone. I tell him, “you are the one who is so rare that you do not even register in the variance in direct behavior in my studies of wisdom. You need to cure your autism, learn to make eye contact and stop turning off girls who would otherwise be into you by physically trembling when you approach them.” Later that night, he bangs 3 girls from the club because he took Xannies to control his shaking and MDMA to cure his autism. Finally, case three: the ghost of Elliot Rodger comes up from hell and asks me why no girls wanted him. I say to him: “You are physically a 4/10. You are an extreme malet who is half asian AND you have no status and who knows how autistic you were in your interaction with people. Surprisingly, despite constant propaganda telling them to race-mix, the innate urge against it is so strong that 90-95% of women date within their race, and if they do race-mix, you better know it’s a rich white male or at least a ripped black gangster with a BBC. It’s not a skinny, manlet happa. She can find a white manlet if that’s her thing.” He proclaims “Blackpilled Again!” as he descends back into hell.
Part II
I am going to justify the obvious: female physical preferences are dysgenic. You already knew this if your IQ is above 120, but nowhere have I seen this formally argued for. In fact, it is rather common for people on the forums I frequent to imply that selecting for muscles is eugenic. They are quite wrong. “By the age of 19, 80% of US males and 75% of women have lost their virginity, and 87% of college students have had sex. But this number appears to be much lower at elite colleges. Only 56% of Princeton undergraduates have had intercourse. At Harvard 59% of the undergraduates are non-virgins, and at MIT, only a slight majority, 51%, have had intercourse. Further, only 65% of MIT graduate students have had sex.” (17)
It has been clear since at least The Bell Curve that IQ is being selected against. The proposed causes for this phenomenon range from welfare checks to those with higher IQs acting more responsible. One overlooked cause is female mate preference: women care greatly about their partners physicality, and their physical preferences select against IQ and Need-For-Cognition (NFC). This is not to some great benefit in some other trait: outside of their preferences against the obese and the horrifically diseased, female physical preferences are stuck in 9000 BC. In other words, the trait they are selecting for is strength. Health is neutral or selected against, and intellect is certainly selected against due to the outdated, innate preferences of women.
In order to analyze the dysgenic effect of female physical preference, it would be helpful to know what exactly they are selecting for. One study indicates that above height and facial attractiveness, women appreciate large muscles (16). However, it is not necessary to derive a predictive model for physical attractiveness in men which assigns a percent of the variance explained to each trait, nor is it likely possible considering the current level of data. The reason why it is not necessary is because studies have already shown what factors women find physically attractive, and each can be shown to be dysgenic to some extent. These other factors are height and facial masculinity.
Having large muscles negatively correlated with intelligence and intellectual attitude. Having a higher NFC, or tendency to think deeply, strongly predicts spending less time in the gym compared to those with low to average NFC (8). Furthermore, time spent in the gym negatively correlates moderately with IQ (r ~ -0.30). Although some research indicates that muscle strength is linked to a longer life, this is likely flawed data due to obese subjects and the fact that most of it is collected on elderly people. Of course stronger elderly people are healthier, but why are they stronger? It is because they have not degenerated as much due to their genes. Even if it were to be accepted that strength correlates with health, the net effect of selecting for strong over nonobese, average men is still dysgenic because it selects against IQ. Furthermore, high IQ men that are selected against due to outdated female preferences are likely as healthy or healthier than resistance trainers because IQ is associated with longevity in itself (19), despite the fact that men with higher IQs exercise less. Next is the face. Facial attractiveness in men is associated with “perceived health” but not with real measures of health and virility (20). It is largely thought that women are attracted to faces of higher Testosterone men -- there is a negative or neutral correlation of testosterone with immune response (12,14). Testosterone is also negatively associated with longevity (21). Finally, there is no association between IQ and facial attractiveness on the genetic level according to twin data (11).
As for height: women like taller men and taller men are less healthy (18). A taller man in 9000 BC, however, is more likely to beat an equally healthy manlet in a fight. In 2020, the manlet will just pull a gun and the taller man will die.
As I previously wrote, physicality seems to explain more than half of the variance in male romantic success. Not only is physical attractiveness largely irrelevant to fitness in 2020, it is actually at least slightly unfit given its negative correlation with intelligence and need for cognition. Many healthy men are getting cheated out of children because in the eyes of women they are 4/10s, when in the reality of 2020 they are no less fit than an “attractive” man. Despite their face and their stature, they will probably live healthily to a ripe old age and they are likely to actually have a higher IQ than an “attractive” man. The solution is to enact what made Europe great from the beginning: enforced monogamy. Make average looking women settle for average looking men again. This model is both historically standard and has the benefit of not selecting against high IQ children like the fornication model of 2020 does.
Part III
I won’t say much on status and its dysgenic effects other than surveyed women say they actively prefer dumber guys than they could otherwise get. More specifically, when offered a choice between a 99th percentile IQ and a 90th percentile IQ man, they choose the latter (22). With other traits, such as kindness, they pick 99th percentile: as much as they can get.
The reason for this is probably mostly found in anti-intelligence propaganda like the nonexistent archetype of the “nerd”. Regardless, the only thing that saves high IQ men is money, but they’re often old if they get enough of it at all, and end up with a settled down 30 year old fresh off the cock carousel. IQ goes down every year, and women are to blame, at least in part. They choose every day to reproduce with dumber men due to their superior physique or status instead of reproducing with otherwise average high IQ men. This effect is dysgenic and female preference should be disregarded insofar as is required to correct the direction of our evolution.

2020.09.20 05:09 2unum2 How bad is it to retake the MCAT?

My test date is in a week and I am having major anxiety. I just took my second FL and scored not nearly as well as I had hoped (503 on Princeton Review. My first AAMC was 509) I am feeling really discouraged. I plan on taking 2 more AAMC FL throughout this week as well as continuing to review when I have the time but I am worried it won't make much difference. Fortunately, I have a pretty decent job and have enough money saved to retake it sometime early next year. I know that it is not a great option to retake it and that it paints me in a negative light as a prospective applicant but I am going crazy that my score won't be good enough and knowing that I can take it again is giving me some comfort. Is it really that bad to take it a second time? Anybody go through anything similar? Did it work out well for you? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

2020.09.19 16:12 somw99 Shout out to my friend,seniors,Vince and GREG MAT !!! : How a non-native speaker cracked GRE with V164 Q169 AWA 4.5

Hi all! I’m just officially done with GRE last week (i.e. got AWA result). My score might not be that wonderful (esp AWA),but I think it’s quite satisfying for a non-native speaker like me. So I’d like to share my prep experience, hopefully it could help any of you even if only a little :) the content is too long,so IF YOU’RE INTERESTED,PLEASE SEE THE FULL TEXT BELOW(you can JUST SKIP TO PART 3 AND 5-7!!! and please ignore some grammatical errors because my English is not perfect :P)
Here are some takeaways :
1.Materials : ETS IS THE BEST, Manhattan 5 lb. is a good complement(for quant) and GREG MAT IS INDISPENSABLE
2.Vocab list : Greg Mat 840 / Barron's GRE essential words/ Manhattan 1000 words
3.Study plan : Vincekotchian.com
4.AWA templates : gregmat.com GREG MAT YOU ARE THE BEST
5.Correct each mistake seriously
[FULL TEXT]
I took GRE once last year (then I never revised it until this summer), what I’m sharing here is my preparation for this year’s.
1.My background : just want to give you an idea of where I stand among the test takers.
I’m a Thai, born and studied in Thailand until I finished grade 10. After that, I’ve been studying in China until now (all classes taught in Chinese). Thus, GRE is very tough for me as I have never received training in academic writing. My only strength is quant because math in China’s high schools is freaking difficult.
2.My GRE records : this is my 2nd attempt because my AWA was terrible last year :(
September 2019 My first GRE: V 159 Q 167 AWA 3.0
Early Aug 2020 Manhattan 5lbs. Diagnostic test : V 9/20 (=149-151) Q 20/20 (=169-170)
18 Aug ETS Power Prep 1 : V 161 Q 170 AWA 4.5 (Issue 5 Argument 4)
*I purchased Scoreitnow! so I could get this result
23 Aug ETS Power Prep 2 : V 161 Q 167 AWA 4 (Both4) *same as above
25 Aug ETS Power Prep Plus 1 : V 165 Q 165 AWA 4 (Both 4)
27 Aug ETS Power Prep Plus 2 : V 163 Q 165 AWA 4 (Both 4)
29 Aug ETS Power Prep Plus 3 : V 170 Q 168 AWA 4.5 (Issue 5 Argument 4)
1 Sep the actual test : V 164 Q 169 AWA 4.5 This result is beyond my expectation esp AWA (cries),I felt that the actual Quant was much more difficult than PPP!!!maybe I was lucky that day LOL.
3.Materials : ETS IS THE BEST, Manhattan 5 lb. is a good complement and GREG MAT IS INDISPENSABLE
(Last time I totally used Chinese materials…not too bad but If any international students studying in China happen to see this post,I would advise you to treat them as extras.)
MY MATERIALS:
1. ETS OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE GRE
2. ETS OFFICIAL GRE QUANTITATIVE REASONING PRACTICE QUESTIONS
3. ETS OFFICIAL VERBAL REASONING PRACTICE QUESTIONS
4. ALL ETS AWA SAMPLE RESPONSES
5. MANHATTAN 5 LB. : skipped its verbal and finished all quant!
6. VINCE & BRIAN’S GRE POWERPREP EXPLANATIONS
7. GREG MAT’S VIDEOS : I watched some of his videos in the last week ,and HIS AWA GUIDES RESCUED MY AWA!! THANK YOU SO MUCH GREG MAT <3
8. ELEVATE APP : THIS APP IS TRULY AMAZING !!! It would help you holistically (e.g.the”context”game in reading is a good practice for Text Completion). Check it out and it won’t fail you :D
9. Manhattan GRE Prep APP : most of its content is overlapping with 5 lb. though.
10. The Princeton Review Cracking the new GRE (ONLY Part IV How to crack the critical thinking and analytical writing section)
11. Barron’s new GRE (ONLY Part 3 Analytical Writing : tactics, strategies, and practice)
12. ETS GRE Big Book : I didn’t go through it ,but I’ve heard that it’s old but gold(FOR READING COMPREHENSION)
VOCAB LISTS: actually Greg Mat or Vince’s list is undoubtedly good ,but I found it too late. Anw the vocab lists below are equally helpful!!
  1. BARRON’S ESSENTIAL GRE WORDS : I downloaded the app.It contains 3 lists : 300 High-Frequency words,800 Essential words and 300 High-Frequency Word Roots. I THINK THIS IS A MUST bc there are many exercises to help you memorize vocabs more retentively.
  2. MANHATTAN’S 1000 WORDS LIST : don’t confuse with the appendix in 5 lb.
HOW TO STUDY VOCABS :
-Looking up in MERRIAM-WEBSTER bc it has example sentence and synonyms-antonyms
-Personally,I don’t recommend memorizing vocabs in our mother languages. Instead,we should study its SYNONYMS such as Fledgling = novice, newcomer. This would help us to avoid being repetitive in AWA.
4.My prep plan : It took me about 1.5 month to nail it.
I basically dedicated the whole summer (July and August) to crack GRE. However, TOEFL was my main task in July,so I didn’t study systematically for GRE. Here’s my timeline :
July : 1.study 25-50 vocabs per day
2.do some math, text completion and sentence equivalence on Manhattan App
August : to be very honest,I didn’t study everyday haha
Daily : continue July’s routine + cramming 5 lb quant
1st week : browsing through GRE blogs (including Reddit!!)
selecting study materials later decided to follow Vince’s advice (do not use third prep company’s book except 5 lb.)
doing 5 lb. diagnostic tests
studying ETS’ Math Review
2nd week : mugging up ETS OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE GRE
3rd week : doing Power Prep 1
mugging up ETS OFFICIAL GRE QUANTITATIVE + VERBAL REASONING PRACTICE QUESTIONS
4th week : doing mock tests (+correcting in the following day)
watching Greg Mat’s videos(I should have watched them earlier...)
Last day before the test date : believe me, all you have to do is JUST CHILLIN~
Overall,my plan was quite haphazard…I strongly recommend you to :
  1. leave enough time for studying vocabs. I don’t think it’s a good idea to cram them within a few days :/
  2. ARRANGE MOCK TESTS IN THE SAME TIME SLOT AS ACTUAL TEST’S so that you can familiarize yourself with the real condition
  3. If you are looking for a systemic STUDY PLAN, go for VINCEKOTCHIAN.COM
5.Tips for Verbal
IMPORTANT : first of all, please keep in mind that “QUALITY OVER QUANTITY”. You have to CORRECT EACH MISTAKE SERIOUSLY. After knowing that you got that question wrong no matter quant or verbal, you should try to FIGURE OUT WHY IT IS THE CORRECT ANSWER BY YOURSELF before reading the explanation.
You may FIND MORE INFO IN GREG MAT’S VIDEOS, here are some takeaways.
My principles :
1.THE CORRECT ANSWER MUST HAVE ITS EVIDENCE IN THE GIVEN CONTEXT(Its meaning must be stated in the text such as in reading comprehension, the correct answer will have its corresponding sentences in the passage, but it won’t be as explicit as in TOEFL’s reading. Do not choose “plausible”choice if you couldn’t find its evidence!!!)
2.PAY ATTENTION TO THOSE “ABSOLUTE WORDS” IN THE CHOICES such as EVERY,ALL,NONE…
3.DON’T GET PANIC,TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND READ CAREFULLY don’t read to fast but grasp nothing. Last year,I always tried to skim as fast as possible ,but I ended up reading it again…
4.DO SENTENCE EQUIVALENCE AND TEXT COMPLETION FIRST (ideally within 7-8 minutes)
For each type of questions :
1.Text Completion : spot transitions/shifts (however,for all,even if etc.)
2.Sentence Equivalence : “PAIRING STRATEGY” (see Greg Mat’s video)
3.Reading Comprehension : I think ,unlike TOEFL,we should READ THE WHOLE PASSAGE FIRST, paying special attention to the FIRST AND LAST PARAGRAPH and each paragraph’s TOPIC SENTENCES. We can skim through the examples but make sure you understand what the author tried to demonstrate.
My additional tips :
3.1 RC Logical Reading
-point out the fact(premises) and conclusion (normally the last sentence)
-WEAKEN = provide another possible explanation/cause
STRENGTHEN = rule out other possible explanation/cause
-the correct choice is usually MOST RELEVANT TO THE ARGUMENT e.g. if the passage discusses about a contagion in country A then the choice talking about the same contagion in other countries is not likely to be the answer.
3.2 RC “select all that apply” : I hate this type most =_=
-find corresponding sentence
-BUT sometimes you have to “look at big picture” as in the correct choice could also convey the main theme of the passage, not specific sentence (see Power Prep 2 Q19-20)
OVERALL : GRE Verbal’s passages often present contrasting ideas or the new findings. So after reading,we must be able to point out what are old and new ideas talking about.
6.Tips for Quant
I didn’t watch Greg Mat’s videos,but I’m sure they will be useful.
My principles :
1.DO NOT LINGER ON TOUGH QUESTIONS esp questions 12-14(approx.)
2.BE CAREFUL WHEN THE PROBLEM IS SEEMINGLY EASY. There might be a trap…such as you have to consider different situations like when -1 Sorry,I don’t have any special strategies for quant. Just want to add that I often found geometry most difficult (and it often appears before data interpretation which is much easier) so just skip and return to it when you already finished the rest.
7.Tips for AWA
My principles :
1.STICK TO GREG MAT’S TEMPLATES (see the videos)!!! THEY REALLY HELP !!! last year I wrote without templates so the result was like that…just follow Greg Mat and you’ll be fine.
2.WRITE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN if I didn’t get it wrong,AWA is graded by human and e-rater? for the latter, word count is an important indicator. I think for non-native speakers like us, at we should manage to hit 500 words. I think it’s okay to write only 4 paragraphs, but we must elaborate our ideas thoroughly.
3.THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU START WRITING I know it’s rush, but we must give ourselves around 3 mins(up to person) to organize our thoughts and create an outline.
4.WRITE A COMPLETE ESSAY I noticed that the Scoreitnow!(e-rater) could determine each component(introduction, thesis statements, conclusion etc.).Therefore, I infer that we will get a low score if our essays don’t include all elements that e-rater is looking for.
5.KEEP IT SIMPLE it’s good to come up with a profound and novel idea BUT if you find it difficult to articulate, you’d better write about something simpler that apparently can buttress your thesis statement and you can control well.
6.FOR ARGUMENT, ATTACK MAIN POINTS AND TRY TO FIND 3 FLAWS
7.USE TRANSITIONS TO MAKE YOUR IDEAS EASY TO FOLLOW
About Scoreitnow! : some of you might hesitate if you should purchase it. My verdict is : YES. You can see from my records that it’s quite accurate. You can expect +-1.0 from its grading. These are some details about Scoreitnow! :
-you can submit two essays (any combination(issue/argument) and you can select topics ,but I vaguely remember that actually there are limited choices, not the whole questions pool) Also you can choose to write in practice(can write online or offline(write in word then paste there)) or test experience mode
-after that, you can write 6 more essays(3 arguments and 3issues). This will appear in test experience mode (limited time+random topics)
-It’s just a rough guide as it couldn’t assess the coherence of your essays.
8.Last messages : The GRE is daunting especially for non-native speakers, but our hard work will pay off!
Thank you for reading until here. I have 3 more things to say about the GRE :)
-GRE and self-improvement
My friend once told me that actually GRE is more about familiarizing oneself with its format rather than anything to do with one’s ability. I think he was true. Yet, I think GRE prep also did improve my skill a lot. It urged me to study more “esoteric” vocabs and get to know more about how to analyze an argument which is not emphasized in my secondary education. So while you are worrying about GRE,I hope you think positively that this is a good opportunity to “upgrade” yourself as well.
-GRE and language competency
We all know that GRE is not a language test. However, if your English is too bad,you would find it increasingly difficult. But just as mentioned above,GRE is basically about the format. Thus,DON’T BE HOPELESS. If you could comprehend the GRE’s pattern, you still have a chance to ace it!
-THANK YOU SO MUCH MY FRIEND, SENIORS,VINCE AND GREG MAT
Last year, I enrolled for a private GRE course in China (it’s very popular there). The price was exorbitantly high and later I didn’t like that it was too commercialized. Consequently,I left the course (fortunately could refund the rest haha) and started preparing by myself. This year,I’m so happy that by studying completely at my own pace,I could get much better result. I received much help from my friend and seniors who kindly shared their prep books and encouraged me :”) Also shout out to Vince and Greg Mat that provide us with many helpful sources !! you two have got a fan from Thailand!!! Long way to go for grad school application, but now I couldn’t be more thankful for you guys :)
Hang in there my friends,All the best for your GRE!!

Aged care outbreaks with 10 or more active cases

NOTE - Changes to the aged care outbreak table:
The information in the table below captures information provided by DHHS on the “Case locations and outbreaks” page. Previously, I was using a mixture of DHHS/media releases from aged care facilities/news/Facebook etc. for information.
While creating this table, I have noticed that some of the information provided between DHHS vs. the media release from the aged care is different. Furthermore, I’ve found one aged care where the information provided by DHHS in their media release vs. their case locations and outbreak page also don’t add up. I haven’t had the time to look through all the outbreaks and compare numbers so over the next few days I will:
  • Compare numbers across the latest media release vs. the outbreaks page vs. the media release of the aged care and somehow include this information.
  • I’ll include outbreaks with less than five cases.
I have also decided to exclude the “reported by DHHS” column as I think the table will get way too large/messy. I am keeping records outside of these Reddit posts so if you need this information, feel free to message me.

2020.09.17 19:09 sfsd5 advice in the middle of the venn diagram

i was thinking about a couple recent posts in the context of this one:
https://www.reddit.com/sugarlifestyleforum/comments/iu37w8/come_together_now/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
and i figured rather than do any meaningful work for the next 3 minutes i'd write this. this is from my experience of a decade in the bowl and the dozens of really good friends i've made of both genders. it applies equally to SDs and SBs. the point of the whole courtship / seeking / dating / m+g / etc process is to find someone who actually likes you. someone who likes you for who you actually are, what you actually offer in a relationship, and someone you feel the same way about.
there is no point whatsoever in lying or being deceitful about who you really are. put your best foot forward, yes, but save everyone the time and hurt feelings of having to next or dump you because you aren't who you portrayed yourself as:
be confident. be your best version of yourself. if you need to fudge a bit for discretion, go for it. nobody cares if you're 37 vs 39 or 23 vs 25 or went to yale instead of princeton. but be you. one of the great promises of the sugar bowl is the ability to be honest. if you're in it just for the money, or the sex, or the arm candy, or whatever, just say so. the whole point is to find someone who likes you and has what you're looking for. the sugar bowl is a big place with space for lots of different relationships.

2020.09.15 06:54 redrumkafka I have wasted my life, can I start over at 28? Please Help!!

I have lived a mediocre life, with very big dreams. But now I realize that I have wasted my life and I am no close to achieving my dreams. I am an MBA for the top 15 institutes from India and yet I hear in interviews that I am unemployable.
The truth is I don't exactly know what I want to do. I am currently devoid of any passion or dreams. And when I see my graduation classmates studying in Cambridge, Harvard, Princeton, etc. I feel I am an acute failure.
I want to start over. But now I feel I am too old, wasted 10 prime years of my life doing nothing more than partying and dating. Now I hate myself for doing it and I no more socialize or date because of this guilt. I feel now my fate is sealed to be a mediocre failure in life. I don't know how to drive, swim, or how to code or any music instrument. I can't do anything and I feel like a burden living with my parents, I can't get out of bed with this thought in my mind, I have a constant headache thinking about my life.
Can anyone help to know if someone can start afresh at 28? Or am I just too old to do anything?

2020.09.14 02:24 superlandonorris GRE Official Scores 154V169Q. Here's my journey! - Online GRE

Hello everyone!
I finally got the scores I wanted! I took the GRE for the second time and got 154V169Q. Since I know how helpful this subreddit might be, I thought about giving my two cents and finally closing this chapter for good.
Backgound
I'm a non-native speaker with a bachelor's degree in Economics. I have a pretty good math foundation but did not have any standardized testing experience prior to GRE. I'm applying for Masters in Finance (MFin) at the top ranking universities, so a good score in quant (165+) and a decent verbal (152-155) is a must.
GRE PREP (1st Time):
I started studying by mid September '19 with Magoosh's 6-month-study-guide (beginners).
https://magoosh.com/gre/2012/6-month-gre-study-plan-for-math-beginners/
Since it had been almost 4-5 years since I last saw some of these math concepts, I thought of reviewing them from scratch with the beginners study plan. However, throughout the plan I noticed that the only difference between the beginners route and the advance course was doing some exercises from Nova's Math Bible. As a result, when I started feeling too comfortable with the beginners program I switched to the advanced study plan:
https://magoosh.com/gre/2012/6-month-gre-study-plan-advanced-math/
During the first three months, I took prep somewhat pretty chill. I did 3-4 study sessions a week with 2 hours per session, with occasional breaks. If you'd like to precisely know which textbooks I used during this first stage, go to Magoosh's link, it's all in there.
I wanted to take the test after completing the 6-month plan (March '20). In my case, the first 3 months were all about knowing the topics, the types of questions and some of the tips and tricks and the following 3 months were about mastering everything.
My prep started getting real serious (studied 4+ hours everyday and a practice test on the weekend, one day off) after I purchased the test in February '20 (test center), but I noticed by the end of March that I still wasn't ready and since test centers were not available because of COVID-19 I ended postponing and switching to take the online GRE on May 30th.
Quant
By the end of May, I felt like I was ready for getting that 165+ on quant. I studied very thoroughly, doing all the tasks from the study plan and also redoing Magoosh's Quant Question Bank. I also had a document where I kept all my math important notes and tricks that were classified by topic. As I went closer and closer to test day, I kept trying to be more accurate, avoiding silly mistakes and covering any weak areas that I could think of.
AWA
For the AWA, I studied from Gremat's youtube videos for essay structures. I was pretty comfortable with the Argument Essay, but the Issue Essay was a complete nightmare since it was very difficult for me to come up with examples. In order to improve this, I started devouring history books and magazine articles (The Economist and The Atlantic for the most part). I also read plenty of Wikipedia entries since they all have the information summarized.
Verbal
I pretty much did not study verbal at all. I knew vaguely the types of questions that could come up and other general ideas of the sections.
Testing Experience (1st Time):
I was pretty nervous but was confident I could pull it off. At first Proctor U system went pretty smoothly until they had to reboot the software midway the first section. Afterwards I did not have any further problems.
I had QVQVQ with the most arcane and obscure experimental section on the history of ETS. I got 149V165Q4W.
In retrospective, I had a very limited toolset for solving problems making me not as efficient on quant sections as I wanted. I pretty much solved all exercises algebraically (no picking numbers, backsolving, creating examples nor any other smart strategy). As a result, I ended up loosing valuable time, making mistakes and also noticing that I did have some weak points that I needed to cover if I wanted to have that 165+ on quant.
As for verbal, I just prayed for the lord to gift me a 152+ (yeahh...did not work out so well). But, the good news were that since I did not study much verbal, putting some time and effort in learning vocab and strategies would logically get me from the actual 149 to a potential 155.
GRE PREP (2nd Time):
Not being satisfied with my scores, I decided to give the GRE another chance and studied for another three months until my test in Aug 30th. This time around I needed to cover all my remaining weak areas in quant while also become decent on verbal.
I went all in and studied the same 4+ hours everyday. Sometimes it became really hard to stick to the schedule because of work, but I managed to get two do sessions a day (verbal from 7-9 a.m and quant 7-9 p.m). After work and all studying I was pretty much done for the day.
Quant
At this phase I started feeling that I did not have any weak areas, but after carefully reviewing everything, I noticed that my problem solving strategies were very weak and that I struggled in solving inequalities and circles problems.
I started doing GRE Prep Club (https://greprepclub.com/) exercises from their question bank and also searched for circles theory online.
Later on, after my Magoosh membership expired I thought about giving Gregmat a shot https://www.gregmat.com/. This was a pivotal point on my GRE Prep and I believe it considerably helped me towards achieving my goals.
I reviewed almost every single video Greg had (Quant, Verbal, AWA, basically everything you could think of) and also complemented it with redoing 5lb book and creating my own question bank. Aside from covering the weak areas, I worked very hard on being time efficient and consistent; thinking about solving the problems in multiple ways and determining the best possible strategy.
Verbal
Since I was all about making time efficient progress, I needed to find a way to learn vocab fast.I learned about 1200+ words in those three months by using GregMat's Vocab and words I often saw in ETS official verbal exercise. Only use ETS material for verbal! Third parties are trash on verbal.
After viewing GregMat's Verbal lesson, I finished up my verbal study session by doing the verbal sections from the GRE old book. I did about 12-13 tests.
AWA
Pretty much the same as the first time around.
Testing Experience (2nd Time):
Everything went smoothly with Proctor-U. No internet issues, nothing crashed, no noises, everything went perfect. I also got QVQVQ, but this time I felt I got a regular experimental section.
In general I felt more prepared, more confident and was sure I was able to get a 165+ and 152-155 on verbal. You may have a few insecurities occasionally whispering to you, but in general, if you put in the work, results will follow. Do not guess around, if your expected results are not coming in, then analyze your weak areas and work on them. You must analyze your mistakes, review them and notice when they are recurring mistakes. Record your scores and watch yourself grow, not only in the GRE, but as a more competent professional through this tedious, but valuable journey.
Practice Tests Scores
I took almost all Practice Test you could think of...
I did my first Practice Test about three months into prep. I do not recommend taking a practice test when you are first starting out because they are scarce. You only have a handful of them (6 Manhattan Tests, 2 PowerPrep (PP) from ETS and 3 PowerPrep Plus (PPP) from ETS and maybe the Princeton Review Free Test).
Here's a list of all my test scores and their dates.
Verbal Quant AWA Source Date
154 161 - Manhattan Prep March 21,2020
154 163 - Manhattan Prep April 19, 2020
151 163 - Manhattan Prep May 17, 2020
158 164 - Manhattan Prep May 22, 2020
149 165 4.0 GRE (1st) May 24, 2020
156 160 (sad times) - Manhattan Prep Aug 01, 2020
152 160 (sad part 2) - Manhattan Prep Aug 08, 2020
155 164 3.5 Princeton Review Aug 16, 2020
151 168 4.5 ETS PPP3 (most representative) Aug 22, 2020
153 166 5.0 ETS PPP2 (most representative) Aug 28, 2020
154 169 4.0 GRE (2nd) Aug 30, 2020
I did not write down the scores from the two Free PowerPrep Tests :( and ETS says they've expired already.
It's important to remember that Manhattan's test are a little harder on quant sections and that Manhattan's scoring algorithm is screwed up. ETS has it's own algorithm. You must perform well in the first sections if you attempting for a 165+. If you get 18/20 or higher in the first sections they will give you an extra point. It is imperative that you try to get a 20/20 in the first sections.
I did one practice test per week as Test Day was coming nearer. That will get you into a good rhythm and build stamina. You must study smart, but also hard. Having regular 3-4 hour consistent study sessions will prepare you for that extra experimental section.
One more final remark, do not try to be a hero!. If you do not know how two approach a question strategy wise, skip it. Do not be married to a specific strategy, be flexible. Prepare yourself and everything will be alright.
In Greg we trust! Good luck to everyone!

I really would like to go to Princeton, it's one of my dream schools, however I am extremely discouraged about myself and I don't know if its even worth applying to, even though my parents want me to.
I have a high GPA, strong extracurriculars, I'm a good writer, etc. But, I"m not submitted my SAT/ACT scores because my testing date has been rescheduled around 6 times and all the spots are taken for October where I live. I also had gotten a C in honors math sophomore and junior year. I don't have any legacies and I don't have groundbreaking publications or started a nonprofit.
I just feel really average about myself when it comes to applying to Ivies. It has such a low acceptance rate, and I just don't know how to push myself to finish the application. Just in a bit of a rut.
What should I do?

Thanks
