2020.08.28 21:22 ConductScience-Inc The Psychology of Worldviews - Interview with Artur Nilsson

Hello! Who are you and what are you working on?

I am an associate professor of psychology at Linköping University in Sweden. I completed my Ph.D. at Lund University in Sweden, but I also spent a Fulbright year at New York University in the United States.
I study people’s worldviews – their most basic beliefs about the world, values, and moral convictions. I try to figure out how to conceptualize and measure worldviews and I study their impact on people’s lives, for example, on religiosity, moral behavior, political polarization, and receptivity to misinformation. More generally, I try to square the ambition to understand persons as rational, existentially aware, meaning-making creatures with the principles of rigorous science. I would like to contribute to making personality psychology more comprehensive, more systematic, and more in tune with contemporary philosophy. I would like my research to ultimately help people to understand themselves, to become resistant to misinformation, and to be able to interact constructively with others who do not share their view of the world.

What’s your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?

I first got interested in personality psychology as a double-degree student of psychology and philosophy. I was fascinated by the psychology of philosophical divisions and started thinking about how people’s views of the world reflect their personalities. My thesis supervisor Bert Westerlundh introduced me to the work of Silvan Tomkins on personal ideologies, which I found fascinating. I also drew a lot of inspiration from the philosophy of mind and classical existentialist philosophy. I felt that contemporary personality theory was missing a critical aspect of personality.
I was accepted into a PhD-program in 2008 with a project focused on the psychology of worldviews. After finishing the PhD in 2013, I continued this path.

Please describe the process of learning, iterating, and creating the project

I had the good fortune of receiving advice from several experienced professors. I initially contacted a professor of cognitive psychology who I knew was interested in philosophical issues in psychology. He got behind my project and helped me to formulate the initial research plan (but moved to a different university before my project started). During my PhD, I was supervised by several other professors with different kinds of expertise, from whom I learnt different skill sets. They helped me to sharpen both the theoretical and empirical parts of my work, to improve my writing, and to understand the field I was trying to make my way into. In my experience, it is very important to have good mentors in science. It takes so much longer to try to figure out everything by yourself.
There were nevertheless hurdles along the way. I was naïve at the start. I didn’t understand the social and psychological aspects of science very well. I didn’t understand that if you are a rookie researcher and you propose a new theoretical perspective, then most researchers are likely to not notice or to ignore your work – they are simply too busy with their own research programs and wedded to their own theories and traditions of research. Researchers today generally start their careers with what the philosopher Thomas Kuhn called “normal science” within well-established theoretical traditions, fields, and programs of research. After building up a track record of publications and citations and a reputation in their field, they might venture into more critical, innovative work. I tried to do things in the opposite order. This is not something I recommend.
The first time I submitted my work to a journal of personality psychology, the editor wrote that the worldviews I studied are not a part of personality “per se” and desk rejected the manuscript. Shortly thereafter, I managed to publish a theoretical paper arguing, from a philosophical perspective, that worldviews are in fact a basic aspect of personality that is often neglected within the field. After this, I have never had a problem convincing the editors of personality journals that my work is relevant to personality psychology, although many researchers still subscribe to a narrower definition of personality.

Please describe the process of launching the project

I gave some talks at the department I was in to let others know what I was working on. I have also been quite open to talking to the press and I have given public talks on a few occasions.

Since launch, what has worked to make your project grow/be successful?

Collaborations with other researchers have been essential for the success of my project. Because I do not have a major research grant, I have been dependent on the resources of others to get a hold of high-quality data. It’s hard to argue with high-quality data, so this has been super helpful for publishing my research in leading journals. In addition, my collaborations with others has given insights into new areas of research (e.g., on prosocial behavior, nudging, and receptivity to misinformation). I have found collaborators among other doctoral students at the department where I completed my PhD, through contacts acquired during my year at New York University, and through the researchers who were faculty opponents for my doctoral dissertation.
Another important factor was that I have been able to build bridges between my own more philosophically inspired interest in the psychology of worldviews and hot topics in political and moral psychology. This has enabled me to publish some papers in leading journals in my field.
How is everything going nowadays, and what are your plans for the future?
I recently got a tenured position, so that’s great. I get to teach a lot of philosophy of science, philosophical issues in psychology, and quantitative methods, while I like. I am also working on a paper in which we develop an integrative, hierarchical model of basic beliefs about the world and a few papers on philosophical issues in personality psychology (e.g., the explanatory status of trait constructs and major principles for a psychology of worldviews). At this point, I really need a major recent grant to be able to go through with some of my more ambitious research goals. For example, I would like to conduct longitudinal studies of how worldviews (and personality characteristics in general) change as a function of exposure to new educational environments, new cultures, and major life events, and how they predict major life choices, and I would like to try to develop methods that inoculate persons with different worldviews against misinformation. Hopefully, knowledge about the nature of worldviews can help us to improve people’s lives in the long run.

Through your science, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?

To other young researchers who are venturing into science, I would say this. Science is the most magnificent of human inventions. But academia is often irrational, unpredictable, and myopic, and competition over jobs and grants can be fierce. It is important to know what you are getting yourself into. If you are passionate about science, you should absolutely pursue an academic career – but you should do so with realistic expectations and with a plan. You should think strategically about what research programs, environments, or publications are likely to both help you survive in academia and give you enough room for passion, curiosity, integrity, intellectual engagement, and well-being in the long run. You should remain open to other career options if things are not going your way and try to have a backup plan. Persistence can pay off in the long run, but too much idealism can also be costly.

Our readers would like to know more about you. Please let us know what is your morning routine (first 2 hours of your day) like?

If I don’t have any meetings or classes to teach, I always drink an ice coffee while checking my e-mails and the news, often while taking a bath to wake myself up. Then I work a couple of hours until lunch. I don’t eat breakfast on a daily basis. I never exercise in the morning. This is mostly because I am as far from a morning person as you can find. But I also think that it’s better to exercise, go for a walk, or do a bit of relaxation between work sessions than before starting to work. That gives you a chance to activate your body and replenish your energy, which is really advantageous if your job involves cerebral activity but physical inactivity. I therefore think that it’s best to get started early and take breaks during the day if you have a lot of work to do. By starting early, I don’t mean sacrificing sleep – never do this unless you have to! I mean not having an excessive morning ritual. I can keep my concentration for many hours straight and get very involved in my work, so I sometimes need to force myself to take breaks, because I know that it’s good for my body and brain in the run.

And how does a typical day look for you?

During the pandemic, I work from home. If I have no classes to teach and no meeting, I sit on my couch and work for a few hours. I make lunch at home. Sometimes I go for a walk in the afternoon or talk to a colleague before resuming work. If the weather is nice, I might go for a run outside. I then work a couple of hours more until the evening. Then I do other stuff – dinner, physical exercise, social activities, movies, etc. I used to work a lot very late in the evening or in night as well after other activities, and I still do if I have deadlines or a lot of work. But I have tried to stop doing that in general because I think it affects my well-being and sleeps negatively. You need time off from work.

What does your workstation look like?

Right now, my workstation is a comfortable couch in my apartment. I have a laptop in front of me. If I am teaching classes I use two laptops – one for my presentation and one for the faces of the participants. I also have a cellphone at my side to be able to take calls (I have HP and Huawei laptops and two iPhones). This is essentially what I need to do my job. Everything is so digitalized these days. I rarely print articles on paper. I read them on my laptop unless they are unusually important to me. I do however also have a large collection of books. This is the one thing that you can’t access from a computer. As an academic, you cannot remember everything you’ve read, but you often know exactly where to look if you need to refresh your memory of some topic or quote a particular author.

What platform/tools do you use for your professional life?

I use standard Windows tools, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Adobe Reader. I also use statistics software a lot, including IBM SPSS, R, and IBM Amos. I use Zoom for teaching and sometimes Teams or Skype for communicating with colleagues.
What secondary software and apps do you use daily?
G-mail, Google Scholar, Twitter, the iPhone podcast app, Swedish national radio, and television, sometimes exercise and weather apps. Nothing that fancy.

How do you stay up to date on news and resources?

I get automatic updates from Google Scholar and from ResearchGate. I also check Twitter every now and then. I follow many well-known scientists and researchers in psychology. I think that I get most of my news from Twitter. Sometimes I also visit the webpages of researcher s whose work I’m interested in. Listening to podcasts can also be a good way of staying up to date with what’s going on in your field.

What have been the most influential podcasts, or other resources?

I do regularly listen to podcasts by leading figures in psychology and the open science movement. But I would say that this is mostly for entertainment, distraction, and staying up to date. Books often provide more intellectual stimulation. Podcasts rarely go that deep, although I must say that listening to podcasts from other fields that I am less versed in, such as history or anthropology, can be quite interesting.

What tools do you use in your personal life? Cook? Self Care? Hobbies?

It’s pretty standard. I exercise a lot, I take walks in nature, I try to take time off from work every now and then, to nourish my social connections, and to not let work take over my life. I do try to think about healthy eating habits too, but I probably like chocolate a bit too much. Going to a spa or taking a sauna bath after some vigorous physical activity can be very relaxing. Running in nature is also superb for health and psychological well-being.

Advice for other scientists who want to get started or are just starting out?

See my response to the previous question about what I have learned through my project. Also, think about work-life balance. Don’t sacrifice everything for an academic career.

Thank you very much for your time, Artur. Where can we go to learn more?

Day 1 - Saturday - $19.08
11AM- Wake up, brush my teeth, and do my morning skincare routine, which consists of La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating face wash, Pyunkang Yul essence toner and Nivea Sun Gel. I have breakfast, Golden Grahams and scrambled eggs with my sister, K. I make coffee and add my latest obsession, oat milk (never going back to almond).
1PM- I'm tidying up my room, when K walks in. She visiting for a couple of days, and is heading back today. She'll be starting as an attending physician in September but money has been tight for her since she hasn't been working since finishing her fellowship in July. She drops a bombshell on me, she has about $19K in credit card debt that accumulated over a few years. She states it's mainly from moving costs, exam fees, and trips related to training, but then I think back to items she bought in the past, like her Canada Goose coat and Burberry watch. She asks if she can borrow $3K and I say yes. She's my best friend; she's always been here for me, so of course I will help her out no hesitation. I tell her to be careful about lifestyle creep though when she starts working, and look into hiring a financial advisor for retirement planning & debt repayment. She promises to give me back the money plus more, next month when she gets her first paycheck and bonus.
4PM- We see K off as she heads back home, I take my dog out for an extra long walk in the neighborhood, he's sad to see K go.
5PM- I do laundry, today is chores day.
6PM- ...and also wash day. I shampoo and deep condition my hair. My WD faves are from the Shea Moisture JBCO line and Alikay Naturals.
8PM- I order quesadillas and Nutella nachos via Door Dash. My dumbass mistakenly inputs the delivery address as the restaurant's address. The driver calls me confused and states he returned the food back to the restaurant. I go pick up the food with damp hair. I don't normally do food delivery (a friend suggested and let me know that first time delivery fee is free) and take it as a sign I should stick to picking up my orders ($15.90 + $3.18 tip).
9PM- Get back home, heat up the food and watch a few episodes of The Umbrella Academy season 2. It's such a kooky show.
1AM- I head off to bed. I brush and floss, do my Saturday nighttime skincare routine (LRP face wash, The Ordinary AHA/BHA Peeling solution, PYK toner, and LRP Sensitive Fluide moisturizer) and shower.

Day 2 - Sunday - $0
11AM- Wake up and make breakfast, tostones with chili garlic sauce. Finish it off with Trader's Joe raspberry yogurt and coffee with oat milk.
12PM- Watch the church service via Youtube in the family room.
1PM- I fold laundry and start packing for my stay in Brooklyn. For the week, I'll be staying with my boyfriend T. in Brooklyn.
3:30PM- I say goodbye to my parents and head off to the city. I'm listening to the podcast, Redhanded, a true crime podcast. I really like the hosts, they don't trivialize the cases but still keep you engaged with their banter.
5PM-Arrive in Brooklyn, T has already made an early dinner, chipotle chicken soft tacos. He's awesome.
8PM- T has Hulu (free trial), so we watch the movie, Palm Springs. It's a cute film, Andy Samberg is so charismatic.

Day 3 - Monday - $0
7:45AM- I wake up and shower. I usually shower at night, but at T's place, I'm usually too tired to. I don't like this habit, I feel gross in the morning.
8AM- I apply light makeup (NYX brow pencil to fill in, Too Faced concealer for dark circles, Fenty loose powder to set, MAC raisin blush for a of bit color, Maybelline mascara for lashes, and Jack Black lip balm to moisturize). Upper management recently a enacted new policy of mandatory video conferencing, so I've started putting on makeup. Lol I guess it's good, because I do have a substantial amount of makeup that I had kind stopped using during WFH, partially due to that as well as depression.
8:40AM- Check my emails and review my schedule for the day. I call my mentee (R) to greet her good morning. This week is her last week at the company, she's been an awesome addition to our team.
10AM- I have an intern evaluation with my senior manager to go over R's progress. We both agree that she scores 5s all across the board. We bring in R into the call, to go over the evaluation.
12PM- T wakes up, he is currently unemployed due to covid. He and I make grilled cheese and scrambled eggs for brunch.
1PM- I work on a SQL script for a new project, my manager (my direct supervisor) assigned last week.
4PM- I have a weekly touch base meeting with my direct supervisor and teammates. We go around and discuss action items/projects we're working on.
6:30PM- Finally finish the script, and right in the knick of time, T is finished heating up the soft tacos.
7:30PM- After eating we head to Lowes, T is a proud plant dad. I stay in the car, while he buys pots and potting soil.
10:30PM- We're taking advantage of his free trial, and watch the Lodge on Hulu. I doze off before the film ends.

Day 4 - Tuesday - $12
5:30AM- I wake up and can't go back to sleep, so I surf the net on my phone. After lazing around for an hour or so I hop in the shower and follow through with the rest of my morning routine.
11:30AM- T wakes up, and goes to the bodega to buy bagels. I get a lox and ham, egg&cheese. He gets a lox only. I Venmo him, money for the bagels ($12).
3PM- I have an meeting with my manager, he gives me an update regarding a joint project with the QA team. We're scaling back on it. I also discuss with him, training, and we agree that it's time to include additional training to my workload. I'm happy to hear that he agrees because I would like to improve my skillsets and learn new tools.
7PM- I clock out of work. While I was working, T and his roommate were making pizza. I remove the mushrooms but it's A1, they're such great cooks.
8PM- We go for a walk around the neighborhood, of course with our masks ons.
9:30PM- I talk with my friend for about hour, just to catch up. We promise to meet up at the end of the month to go hiking. I haven't seen her since February.
10:45PM- I look over and edit T's cover letter, during the day he had been working on it. We drink wine afterwards and talk for a bit.
1AM- Tonight I make sure to shower before bed. I remove my makeup using the Innisfree cleansing oil and follow through with my regular skin & body care routine.

Day 5 - Wednesday - $22.45
8:45AM- T and I wake up. I definitely sleep better when I freshen up at night. I hastily go through my morning routine since I woke up late.
10:30AM- T makes sweet corn arepas and fried eggs for breakfast, they're delicious.
1PM- We eat leftover pizzas for lunch
3PM- R, the Dept. intern, and I work on making adjustments to a Tableau report. I let her take the reins on this item though.
5:30PM- Snack break: T makes homemade hummus and we eat with toasted pita bread.
9:15PM- K and I talk for a bit, she's looking for a new apartment closer to her job. We discuss the options, she sends me pics of the two apartments she's viewed so far.
10:30PM- I realized I never bought a gift for my sister, K, for finishing her training and I feel bad for judging her money situation. so I'm scrolling through Etsy for gifts for doctors, and I see a personalized mug for female doctors. It is so cute, I modify the skin tone and include her name. I purchase the mug and send as a gift, adding her address in the shipping information. She's going to love it!
11:15PM- T and I watch the Big Sick on Amazon Prime. I'm trying to utilize Amazon Prime before the free trial ends. It's an okay movie, although Kumail Nanjiani is great as usual.
1:30- T and I talk, he's stressed out about the end of the $600 pandemic unemployment benefits as well as the direction of his career. I try to assure him, I'm not very good at this though. I'm stressed too, and I'm incredibly blessed that my loved ones and I are healthy and I'm gainfully employed. I can't imagine how anxious I would be in his position. As it is, my anxiety levels are through the roof. We pray together, and then head to bed.

Day 6 - Thursday - $22.47
8AM- Wake up and do my morning routine.
8:45AM- Start working on reports. I phone R so we can double team and work on the reports together.
12PM- T and I make brunch, scrambled eggs with toasted pita and smoothies(frozen mango, strawberries, greek yogurt, and oat milk).
2PM- My two managers and I have a meeting with R, to evaluate how we performed as mentosuperviors. It seems like she really enjoyed working in this department and she rates us pretty well. The only constructive feedback she gave, is to start training earlier than we did. I agree, the internship this year seemed a bit disjointed due to everyone working home. I think it was a learning process for us all.
3PM- I send out the reports to my director and then focus on training for the rest of the day
5:45PM- T and I go out for a walk, and then come back home. We make eggplant parmesan and spagehetti, he seems in better spirits today.
10PM- We're trying to have an early night today, I prep for bed. As I take off my makeup, I realize the makeup remover is running low. After showering, I purchase another cleansing oil from the brand, Purito. I've heard great things about this brand on Youtube and the Skincareaddiction reddit, plus it's fragrance-free ($22.47).

Day 7 - Friday - $0
8:15AM- Wakeup and do my morning routine.
9AM- R and I start working on the report for one of the VPs. It's a weekly report that we append to, every Friday.
11:30AM- My manager joins in on our call, and we review the presentation together.
12:30PM- I WhatsApp my grandma as I eat the reheated pasta. I miss her so much, she usually flies to the UK and the states during the summertime to spend time with her children and grandchildren. Of course, she couldn't this year. Even before that, my Uncles and mom decided that maybe she shouldn't be traveling so much due to some medical issues that arose in the past. But she's so sprightly and healthy overall. She mentions it's business as usual back home, and laments most people cannot afford to quarantine/not work, there's no social safety net. We say our goodbyes, and I promise to call her more often.
1:15PM- The other analyst in the team, R, and I get to work on the end of week reports. While working, we talk about the changes R's university will implement in the Fall semester. They'll be starting school earlier than usual but will be ending before Thanksgiving. They still will have in-person classes. I'm really surprised by the fact; she sounds a bit hesitant about the prospect.
4:45PM- I send out the weekly reports. We then have a group call, to send off R, we all iterate how much we loved having her on our team, and we hope she returns again next summer. I note down, to connect with her on LinkedIn.
5:45PM- We have some hummus and pita, and then drive to the Shirley Chisholm park, to go for a walk. It's really nice and peaceful.
7:15PM- T picks up ramen. We both get spicy miso, low on salt. I offer to pay my share, but he refuses.
9:00PM- I'm really trying to squeeze as much as I can from this Amazon Prime free trial before it ends, so we watch Midsommar, although T has already watched it. It's very unsettling, but worth the hype.
11:45PM- I'm exhausted, I do my nighttime routine and we head to bed.

Expenses for the Week
Food + Drink: $31.08
Fun + Entertainment: $0
Home + Health: $22.45
Clothes + Beauty: $22.47
Transport: $0
Other: $0
TOTAL: $76

Reflection:
I feel pretty good about my spending for the week. I don't usually budget, but I think this is line with how I've been spending since my company's WFH policy was put in place. I'm very lucky to be able to save more. I would say before pre-covid, my largest expense was gas (transport) because my commute was quite long. I also think I spent a lot more on takeout and beauty. Based on this money diary, I would really like to track my spending more. Another thing I would like to work on, is shopping around for auto insurance quotes, and for the longer term, start looking at other positions. I'm not sure when my company's WFH policy will end, most likely not this year, but would like to look for higher paying positions that would be closer to home so I can pay my loans more quickly. Thank you for reading my money diary!

Headlines. A line designed to get into your head. And it works, judging by the amount of circulation of conspiracy posts that help move those headlines that masquerade as revealing connections, but are merely propoganda headline clones being disseminated.
So lets get ahead of the lines before the lines get into your head.
Humans have two primary modes of communication; verbal and nonverbal. Nonverbal is body language. Body language on it's own can give you insight. Pairing verbal and nonverbal gives you the whole picture. Headlines are verbal. The content is nonverbal. That's how you get a glimpse of the bigger picture. But we can't look at each article as a completed part of the communicative process. That would be like only watching hand gestures while having a conversation with someone. The article isn't the subject, the event is the subject, and if the subject was person, then we have to find as many articles as we can to profile the body language and interpret the nonverbal communication.
Let me show you what I mean.
Offender Conspiracy Article Profilingcriminal article profiling, is an investigative strategy used by law enforcement agencies conspiracy theorists to identify likely suspects hidden motives and has been used by investigators conspiracy theorists to link cases subjects that may have been committed by the same perpetrator. Multiple crimes may be linked to a specific offender event and the profile may be used to predict the identified offender's conspiracy's future actions real intent. Criminal Profiling Here
And then.
Nonverbal communication (NVC) Multiple Article Profiling (MAP) • is the transmission of messages or signals through a nonverbal platform multiple article content searches (MACS) such as eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, posture, and the distance between two individuals, article source, differing information, dates, pov, and the connections between the sources. It includes the use of visual cues such as body language (content), distance (dates) and organizations/politicians, corporations, law enforcement, environmental issues, economics, and technology/AI. Original NVC Content Here
I have no doubt that the actors who have advanced copies of the script are using data algorithm aggregation that compiles the different content sources into a complete picture for them. We plebs aren't so lucky, we have to peruse and parse multiple sources to connect the dots. In essence, we are the plebs living in a technofuedal era before the invention of the modern Gutenberg technopress for the masses.
So let's throw on some work boots, grab a shovel, and start digging.
The Hacks and Muckrakers.

Trump. The man's Presidency has come at a time where it's all starting to fall apart. And I can't help but think of Trump as Julius Caesar part two. A populist leader who threatened the establishment and upended the republic, paving the way for Augustus Caesar and the soft introduction of Roman empire, as it let the pretenses of being a Republic fade away. If you aren't familiar with that time of history, I would highly recommend doing so. There is more to my comparison that I'm not elaborating on, except to say, if you dig you will find someone else who loves Roman history, looks like a clone of Augustus, and we watched as he made rounds while articles suggested that he had aspirations of becoming President. Do I think that it'll happen soon? Probably not. History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes. And we're only at the start of the Hollow Men by T S *Eliot *.
December 14, 2016: Techcrunch • President-elect Donald Trump met with some of the most prominent executives from the tech industry today at Trump Tower, with investor Peter Thiel and Vice President-elect Mike Pence at his side. Trump opened the meeting with CEOs from Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and others by thanking Thiel for his support. “I want to add that I am here to help you folks do well. And you’re doing well right now and I’m very honored by the bounce. They’re all talking about the bounce. So right now everybody in this room has to like me, at least a little bit,” Trump said, perhaps in reference to the fact that he received little support from Silicon Valley during his campaign. “We’re going to try to have that bounce continue. Perhaps even more importantly, we want you to keep going with the incredible innovation. There’s nobody like you in the world. There’s nobody like the people in this room and anything we can do to help this go along, we’re going to be there for you. You’ll call my people, you’ll call me, it doesn’t make any difference. We have no formal chain of command around here,” Trump said.
Interesting, wouldn't you say? No formal chain of command around here. They thanked Peter Thiel for his support. Ok. Maybe nothing, maybe something. Ok. It's something.

Stop the presses, because were getting squeezed and pasteurized. The tech leaders meet with Trump. They thank Thiel, suggesting that he organized the assembly. And then Trump starts bashing the Technocrats that he's meeting with? Nothing but Bread and Circus. Plain and simple.
June 27, 2017: Tech Transparency Project • No other company in America was as intimately tied to the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party during Barack Obama’s eight years in office than Google. Today the company is doing everything it can to restore the same cozy White House access it enjoyed under President Obama. Eric Schmidt has attended at least two meetings with Trump and attended a third White House meeting with tech leaders last Monday. At the same time, The Groundwork – a secretive Schmidt-funded startup that ran the Clinton campaign’s data operation – recently relaunched itself as a technology platform for liberal organizations working to fight the Trump Administration’s agenda. By all appearances, Google appears to be working overtime to both ingratiate itself with the Trump Administration while simultaneously cashing in on the “resistance” to Trump’s agenda. Source Here
By all appearances? He's working both sides? Trying to cash in? Really? Seriously? Let's break that down.
** 2020 • Eric Schmidt/Net worth: 15.3 billion USD. Call me crazy, but I don’t think a guy with 15 billion dollars is worried about "cashing in**". As I've stated numerous times, this is no longer about money, it's about control. That's imperative to understand. You don't worry about the money hidden under the mattress when you have a locked vault full of cash. Money is only an incentive for those who either don't have it or need more of it. Neither of those categories apply to Eric Schmidt.
So lets examine how badly the Tech guys and Trump aren't getting along, shall we?
March 2, 2016: Defense News • Google Executive Schmidt To Head New DoD Advisory Board. Source Here
Ah. He's working for the Pentagon to make it better. And this happens almost a full year before meeting with Trump. This doesn't look like someone playing both sides, this looks like a team player in a game that only has one team. This is political wrestling that would make Vince McMahon envious. If you want to dive deeper into how Eric Schmidt funded the non profit that started fake news, here's a previous Flatten the Curve post. Part #19
Attendees included Eric Schmidt and Larry Page of Google, Tim Cook of Apple, Satya Nadella and Brad Smith of Microsoft, Jeff Bezos of Amazon (who expressed his excitement that Trump’s administration could be “the innovations administration“), Safra Catz of Oracle, Chuck Robbins of Cisco and Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook. Thiel’s business partner, Palantir CEO Alex Karp, attended as well.
Those are big names and big companies. But they all hate Trump, right?
Thiel has been instrumental in shaping Trump’s approach to technology, helping assemble a list of candidates for technical roles in the upcoming administration and reportedly bringing David Sacks and other long-time associates to the transition team. During his speech at the Republican National Convention, Thiel talked about spreading the prosperity of Silicon Valley to other regions across the country and cited space travel as one of America’s great technological achievements. “Instead of going to Mars, we have invaded the Middle East,” Thiel said.
I should point out that Thiel and Musk started PayPal together.
November 24, 2019: Business Insider • What do the founders of YouTube, Yelp, Tesla, and LinkedIn have in common? Apart from leading massively disruptive technology companies, their founders all share a common resume line item: employment at PayPal. Known for their entrepreneurial mindset and anti-establishment attitude, this elite group is known as the "PayPal Mafia," and they all put in time during the payment platform's early days some 20 years ago. Source Here
Oh. And Pete's instrumental to creating Facebook. Thiel became Facebook's first outside investor when he acquired a 10.2% stake for $500,000 in August 2004. He sold the majority of his shares in Facebook for over $1 billion in 2012, but remains on the board of directors. And he funded Hulk Hogan's lawsuit to take down Gawker. Told ya, it's just political wrestling to entertain us.
However, one of the biggest proponents of travel to Mars, Elon Musk, has also been one of Trump’s most outspoken critics. Musk donated to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and frequently denounced Trump, saying that the former reality television star “doesn’t seem to have the sort of character that reflects well on the United States.” But since the election, Musk appears to have warmed up to Trump. He was a late addition to the invite list for today’s meeting. The transition team also announced this morning that Musk will join Trump’s strategic and policy forum, a group of business leaders that will serve as an advisory committee to the president-elect. Source Here
Musk and Trump, a marriage made in heaven. It's destiny, I tell you, destiny. Or an act (don't worry Elon, I haven't forgotten about you) designed to make us believe that somebody up there is fighting for us down here.
Yet the inclusion of the quote about Mars and War in the Middle East stands out, wouldn't you agree? And we have environmental collapse triggers happening. Riots happening. Why those riots are also happening in Beruit, aren't they? And Isreal and Saudi Arabia don't get along with Lebanon, or the Hezbollah. And President Trump went from Suadi Arabia to Isreal, didn’t he? And wasn't there an explosion there recently? Must all be a coincidence. Let's get back to Pete the magical Thiel and see what else Hulk Hogan's buddy is mixed up in.
He co-founded Valar Ventures in 2010, co-founded Mithril Capital, serving as investment committee chair, in 2012, and served as a partner at Y Combinator from 2015 to 2017. Through the Thiel Foundation, Thiel governs the grant-making bodies Breakout Labs and Thiel Fellowship, and funds nonprofit research into artificial intelligence, life extension and seasteading. A co-founder of The Stanford Review, he is a conservative libertarian who is critical of high government spending, high debt levels, and foreign wars. He has donated to numerous political figures. At the 2009 Singularity Summit, he said his greatest concern is the technological singularity not arriving soon enough. Source Here
Singularity. Not. Arriving. Soon. Enough. Call me paranoid and pass the tin foil hat, but what Matrix code is needed to decipher his words intent? Not soon enough for what? Better Netflix selection? The Alien invasion? Godzilla awakening because of Fukushima? Are the Decepticons already here? Or have they been downplaying the ELE that's approaching? I'll take ELE for a thousand, Alex.
So he's into AI (he backed Deepmind and OpenAI) and life extension. He went to Stanford. He's also going to have his body cryonically preserved. And his Palantir surveillance is, well, nottofreakyououtoranything, everywhere. Palantir's first backer was the Central Intelligence Agency's venture capital arm In-Q-Tel. Then Palantir became Big Brother. Literally. The Palantir clients include the CIA, DHS, NSA, FBI, CDC, the Marine Corps, the Air Force, Special Operations Command, West Point, the Joint Improvised-Threat Defeat Organization and Allies, the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. And Palantir is also being used by Banks, Hedge Funds, Financial Services, and other corporate clients.
Big Brother wants to be Palantir went it grows up.
Now, are you wondering why I started with Trump, Saudi Arabia and Isreal? Are you curious about how it goes from ex CEO of Google Eric Schmidt "playing" both sides of the fence to Palantir and Peter Thiel? Just sit right back and hold tight, cause I'm about to take you on a one way trip to a Brave New Normal World that's called 1984.
Warning. What you're about to read will make you forever question every officially sanctioned narrative. Trust me. Still game? Are you sure? Last chance. You're about to leave neverneverland and you can't go back. Alright. Let's go.
It's All Hidden In Plain Sight.
Let's talk about Epstein. Yep. Him. I've been strangely quiet about Jeffery haven't I? Nothing written about the Captain Pedo and his Amazing friends didn't mean there was nothing there, it just meant that I didn't find anything that indicated something deeper than a pedophile blackmail ring. And sex and political blackmail is as old as time itself. There's a reason they say the world's two oldest professions are prostitutes and politicians. Yet it turns out the professional pimp and the abducted teens may be playing a bigger role than we thought.
July 31, 2019: NY TIMES • Mr. Epstein’s vision reflected his longstanding fascination with what has become known as transhumanism: the science of improving the human population through technologies like genetic engineering and artificial intelligence. Critics have likened transhumanism to a modern-day version of eugenics, the discredited field of improving the human race through controlled breeding. Mr. Epstein’s ranch in New Mexico, which he confided to scientists and others he hoped to use as the site for seeding the human race with his DNA.
Welcome to the Island of Dr. Moreau. We're it's the monsters trying to make humans. Do you still think this was all about blackmail, cause it wasn't. Stop thinking in normal terms, because normal is dead, long live the New Normal.
At one session at Harvard, Mr. Epstein criticized efforts to reduce starvation and provide health care to the poor because doing so increased the risk of overpopulation, said Mr. Pinker, who was there. Mr. Pinker said he had rebutted the argument, citing research showing that high rates of infant mortality simply caused people to have more children.
Epstein criticized efforts to reduce starvation and provide health care. Hmmmm. My memory is foggy, but isn't there someone in Africa trying to provide health care and reduce starvation? Who could that be? Wasn't he into computers and had pictures taken on Epstein’s private jet? Wasn't it Bill Gates? Now why would Billy be hanging around someone who would vocally espouse an ideology that is completely antithetical to his stated humanitarian goals?
Also at the Indian Summer dinner, according to an account on the website of Mr. Brockman’s Edge Foundation, were the Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page and Jeff Bezos, who was accompanied by his mother.
Then there was Mr. Epstein’s interest in eugenics. Once, at a dinner at Mr. Epstein’s mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Mr. Lanier said he talked to a scientist who told him that Mr. Epstein’s goal was to have 20 women at a time impregnated at his 33,000-square-foot Zorro Ranch in a tiny town outside Santa Fe. Mr. Mr. Lanier, said he had the impression that Mr. Epstein was using the dinner parties to screen candidates to bear Mr. Epstein’s children. Mr. Epstein did not hide his interest in tinkering with genes — and in perpetuating his own DNA. Interviews with more than a dozen of his acquaintances, as well as public documents, show that he used the same tactics to insinuate himself into an elite scientific community, thus allowing him to pursue his interests in eugenics and other fringe fields like cryonics. One adherent of transhumanism said that he and Mr. Epstein discussed the financier’s interest in cryonics, an unproven science in which people’s bodies are frozen to be brought back to life in the future. Mr. Epstein told this person that he wanted his head and penis to be frozen.
More Epstein and Eugenics. Source Here
Now call me crazy, but there's some strangeness happening. Cryonics, don't die, just Let It Go and get Frozen. First Peter Thiel, now Epstein. Let's hope the AI Singularity arrives in time, right?
Now I wouldn't have even bothered with their shared interest of joining the Walt Disney Cryonics Club, if there wasn't more in play, and there's more in play.
August 9, 2019: TRT World • The billionaire shared the same personal network that included Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak, infamous Blackwater founder Erik Prince, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, UAE Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed, Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.
According to investigative journalist Vicky Ward, quoting a meeting with Trump’s transition team, Acosta told a White House official: “I was told Epstein ‘belonged to intelligence’ and to leave it alone.”
That's a bit of an exclusive club, kinda like being in the Mouseketeer CIA club. But, hey, nothing to see here, is there? But just in case, let's look into the company that Epstein worked with, Carbyne.
This single company, Carbyne, brought together a who’s who of power brokers and intelligence figures from multiple regions including Russia, China and the Trump administration itself, with Epstein at its heart. Officially, Carbyne provided high-tech solutions for emergency centres. In reality, it existed in a grey area giving it unprecedented access to private information, with significant potential for privacy abuse. Carbyne provides a service for police emergency centres, providing complete access to the caller’s camera and GPS, providing the dispatcher with a live video feed.
Ok. So Epstein and Thiel both are into AI, Surveillance, and Cryonics. President Trump was in Isreal and Saudi Arabia in May 2017. And who ended up in Isreal just afterwards?

SourceHere
Ok look. I get it. Rich people make investments, those investments are bound to end up in the same company. But these companies aren't exactly run of the mill home security systems, are they? Nope. This is the kind of surveillance systems that the KGB or the Stasi could only dream of. And when you wish upon a star dreams come true. And Peter Thiel must be wishing upon a star.
Ok. Strap in, buckle up, and try to keep up, or you're gonna get left in the dust. Cause it's boom or bust from here on out, and we're gonna add it up like the count.
So Elichai owns Carbyne. Peter Thiel invested in Carbyne. And Carbyne is in the USA linked to the 911 system, and it's being used to fight the pandemic.
Forbes (Link Above) • Its founder thinks Carbyne’s tech could make the lives of 911 dispatch and healthcare professionals much less chaotic in the Covid-19 crisis. Carbyne relies on callers submitting themselves to self-surveillance via their own mobile phone. Once a caller uses their Android or iPhone to call 911 (85% of emergency calls now come from mobile devices), they receive a text message that asks for permission to get their precise location and access video from their smartphone camera.
Step right up and give your permission to be saved. Big Brother is looking out for you.
So Elichai used to work for the 8200. Cool name, right. I'm not sure about you, but that sounds pretty dystopian. And I've gotta say, that all of Technocrats that are promising us an AI utopia, sure seem to be getting ahead of the curve by building doomsday bunkers for a dystopia. And here we sit wasting our time Doomscrolling.
So what else has sprung up from the 8200? Have you ever heard about the NSO Group?
November 1, 2019 - WhatsApp identified an Israeli company, NSO Group, as having developed the spyware called Pegasus, which it held responsible for the breach. This disclosure was part of a lawsuit WhatsApp has filed against the NSO Group in a US federal court, saying the company was actively involved in hacking users of the encrypted chat service. As per the WhatsApp complaint the “target users included attorneys, journalists, human rights activists, political dissidents, diplomats, and other senior foreign government officials.” NSO’s spyware Pegasus has been reportedly used to target journalists in Mexico investigating drug cartels, rights group Amnesty International, human rights activists in UAE, activists in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. According to Israeli news reports, Saudi Arabia paid $55 million for its use. The contract was later frozen over the scandal alleging NSO software's role in Saudi Arabia tracking slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the months before he was murdered in the Saudi Embassy in Turkey. In India, 17 people, who are known to be targeted include activists and human rights lawyers. Source Here
Whoops. Do you remember Jamal Khashoggi? He was trying to expose Human Rights abuses against Saudi Arabia. And then Suadi Arabia decided to murder him, and confirm that they were abusing human rights. Jamal paid the ultimate price to prove his point. But who is selling the hacking tools? At this point they all seem to be springing up from members of the 8200, and the companies they started.
TRT - Link Previously Provided • DarkMatter, a UAE surveillance and intelligence group employing former NSA operatives was built on the back of a larger initiative to modernise Emirati intelligence and military operations. The group took part in at the Arab Future Cities Conference in November 2015, where it presented a vision of smarter, tech-driven cities, which caught the eye of Chinese officials. Smarter cities meant Big Brother-esque widespread surveillance installed throughout the UAE. Only two years later in April 25 2017, DarkMatter signed a Global Strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Huawei, a leading Chinese company, for the same ‘Big Data’ systems and ‘Smart City’ solutions. The middle man? None other than Erik Prince, who had gone from working for the Emiratis, to working for a Chinese billionaire. In suspect timing, the Memorandum of Understanding also took place right before China scaled up its total surveillance and crackdown on Uighurs in Xinjiang, China.
February 2, 2019: Reuters • Xinjiang is a major part of China's Belt and Road infrastructure network but the region has faced attacks blamed on members of the Muslim ethnic Uighur minority. Beijing has responded with a security clampdown condemned by rights groups and Western governments. Frontier Services Group (FSG), a Hong Kong-listed company founded by Prince, said in a Chinese-language statement posted on its website on Jan. 22 that it had signed a deal to build a training centre in southern Xinjiang. Prince is deputy chairman, a minority shareholder and a board member of FSG, a security, logistics and insurance provider. Source Here

Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Aren't we condemning China for the camps, and yet the West is helping to build those camps? Must be a big mistake. We didn’t know what was happening. And Erik Prince swears he didn't know. Honestly. He's not lying. Cross my heart and hope to die. Pinky swear.
Recap.
8200 leads to NSO and Carbyne. DarkMatter is in the UAE with NSA employees. The NSO hack was used to capture Khashoggi. Peter Thiel invested in Facebook, Facebook owns WhatsApp. Peter Thiel invested in Carbyne. Eric Prince works for and founded FSG, which built the Muslim reduction school. China is using similar tech to target Muslims and send them back to school. Carbyne 911 surveillance tech accesses your phone camera after you click on the link to give permission. So. Peter Thiel funds Carbyne. Eric Prince is working for the UAE developing security and the UAE ends up with Dark Matter, and then his company (FSG) is sold to China, and they build re-education centers, which uses technology like Carbyne, and that technology is being used in the USA.
Got it? Good. Because I'm seriously having a hard time keeping up with the behind the scene footage of this LARP.
Link Previously Provided • 1,400 people worldwide, including Indian lawyers, rights activists and journalist, were targets of an online spying campaign that used highly sophisticated spyware developed by an Israeli firm via WhatsApp. WhatsApp is at the centre of a global storm over privacy after it was revealed that at least 17 Indians and about 1,400 people worldwide had their phones breached through the social media app. Their privacy was compromised by surveillance technology so invasive that could read and transmit the entire contents of a phone as well as operate its camera.
WhatsApp, Doc, I think I need an appointment because I'm suffering from Mass Psychogenic Illness from too much Doomscrolling.
Do you want to get deeper? I mean really deep? Yes? Ok. Let's jump into the deep.
October 18, 2019: fortune.com - How a WhatsApp Tax Launched Massive Anti-Government Protests in Lebanon.
What a crazy New Normal World Order we live in. What are the odds that we have a WhatsApp hack tax protest and we also have a WhatsApp hack that uses your phone camera, while also using similar tech in the USA and China. That's inconceivable! That's incredible! Someone call the press and let them know about this! Uhm. Wait. Better not. You might get Khashoggid.
So Eric Prince is involved. Peter Thiel is involved. WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg owns Facebook, and Peter Thiel helped Facebook grow. And then there was this.

At this point, I think I'm going to need to buy a whole lot of tacks and string and make pciture maps on my walls. If we're all living in a Truman Surveillance Show, might as well play the part of the New Normal crazy conspiracy theorist, right?
January 17, 2017: The Intercept According to New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, in December Prince attended the annual “Villains and Heroes” costume ball hosted by Mercer. Dowd wrote that Palantir founder Peter Thiel showed her “a picture on his phone of him posing with Erik Prince, who founded the private military company Blackwater, and Mr. Trump — who had no costume — but joke[d] that it was ‘N.S.F.I.’ (Not Safe for the Internet).”
No. Sanity. Fracking. Involved. Is more like it. This insanity can't pass for sanity, can it? And yet they label us crazy when we start to find the big picture, even if we aren't entirely sure what the big picture means.
The Intercpt Continued: In July, Prince told Trump’s senior adviser and white supremacist Steve Bannon, at the time head of Breitbart News, that the Trump administration should recreate a version of the Phoenix Program, the CIA assassination ring that operated during the Vietnam War, to fight ISIS. Such a program, Prince said, could kill or capture “the funders of Islamic terror and that would even be the wealthy radical Islamist billionaires funding it from the Middle East, and any of the other illicit activities they’re in.” Prince also said that Trump would be the best force to confront “Islamic fascism.” “As for the world looking to the United States for leadership, unfortunately, I think they’re going to have to wait till January and hope Mr. Trump is elected because, clearly, our generals don’t have a stomach for a fight,” Prince said. “Our president doesn’t have a stomach for a fight and the terrorists, the fascists, are winning.” Source Here
Sounds good, right? Kill people who kill people and maybe someday we won't have people getting killed. Killer idea! HEWDSHAWT! Grab your BFG and let's go BGH. It's a date!
But then why are these cell phone surveillance hacks companies being constantly linked with their names, and those hacks are being used to target journalists and human rights activists?
It's a small New Normal World Order after all. And it's getting smaller everyday. No worries though, Keep Calm and Carry On, We're All In This Together, and You're Either With Us Or Against Us. It's all good. That kind of thing could never happen here.

Supplier risks with hardware & software.
None of the following came up for me on exam, but do not avoid them, study and learn them just in case:
ISO standards , NIST standards, blockchain, AI, machine, containers, quantum computing, Treacherous 12, DNSSEC, CSA matrix, CMM, Jericho cube models,
Background & Study Approach:
CISSP approximately 5 years ago, forgot a lot of the content but did reference the CISSP book quite a bit on different topics. Real commitment started about 4 months ago with 2-3 hours each morning each day before work of reading the below books, then later in evening another 1 hour. Then every Saturday & Sunday with approximately 6 hours each day. Over the last 4 months I possibly only missed 1-2 days of study but never missed the weekend long studies. Starting with the following books ISC Study Guide by Ben Malisow, All In One CCSP book by Daniel Carter, CBK by Gordon but only small sections of this book as didn’t read it from start to finish, then into ISC2 practice question book which was a 1,000 questions, then all the AIO questions in book, all the questions in the CBK book, then into CCCure online question engine, Wiley Cybex online questions to redo all the 1,000 questions again, then prep pocket app with about 700 questions, then into the other iPhone apps for questions and jumping between question engines as much as possible along with referencing and rereading the different books to help me with areas I was weak on.
Used my own judgement as to when I was stuck on a question and decided to flag it and move on, not to focus on the timer as it can distract you. I learnt from the CISSP 6 hour exam that getting stuck on a question can trigger a somewhat of a memory/brain freeze so I flagged it and would come back to it later in exam. Getting the mind into this mode of practice allowed me to not always glance at the countdown timer and just focus on the questions.

Books I read in order:

ISC2 Study Guide 2nd Edition ISBN-10: 1119603374 and Official Practice Tests 2nd edition ISBN 10:1119603498 by Ben Malisow ( both books I would give 10/10) really liked these 2 books and knowing their content is key to attempting the exam. The Study Guide book I heavily wrote notes and Post-its in it and read a lot of content second time over and continuously referenced it when I got questions wrong. When I first started my CCSP journey without studying any book, I attempted this book of questions to see how bad I knew CCSP and was lucky to get 10 questions right out of 50 questions. This allowed me to baseline myself before my study journey, then after 4 months of committed study , I would attempt another 50 questions getting approximately 75%-80%... Then with more studying I was slowly getting into the 90%-95% range just 2 weeks out from the exam date. This began to give me some level of confidence but I always knew not to let the 90% scores to give me a false sense of hope, I knew the exam would have lots of curve ball questions thrown at me and now after completing the exam believe me the exam did not disappoint at throwing me plenty of curve balls. ISC2 Study Book by Ben Malisow and Daniel Carter became my goto books for reference and content. I also got both these books in hard copy and Kindle editions, Kindle editions helped a lot 1-2 weeks out from exam date as online keyword searches helped find content quickly, also when traveling helped to have content on iPhone.
All In One CCSP by Daniel Carter Second Edition ISBN-10: 1260456927 (10/10) Very easy to read and Daniel has done outstanding job on research to really explain the concepts, lots of additional references and I can safely say after just sitting the exam please take note of Daniel's key points in the book when he says 'Exam Tip' , make sure you embed his exam tips into memory…. THESE TIPS WILL COME UP IN THE EXAM. Completed all the questions in each section, averaging about 85%-90%.Got kindle edition also.
The Official Guide to The CCSP CBK by Gordon ISBN-10: 1119276721 . (6/10) Don’t get me wrong on the lower score, this book has some great content and I did use it a lot, my concern was this book had dated content and I risked trying to learn something from a dated book and would confuse my simple mind… so I did not read this book completely from front to back. Although I didn’t read the book I did attempt all questions in each section and averaged about 70%-80%I simply use the book as additional reference so I could look up in the index if the book had additional content I could use as a second or a third reference to try help me better understand a specific topic I was struggling with but every time I came across something that I had to learn off by heart like SDLC cycles, audit process, DBC concepts I would stick with AIO book and Ben's books for more up to date information.
Online Test Engines:
https://www.cccure.education/ (9/10)
I really like this test engine by Clement, styled very much like the exam and has a lot of great content on answers to learn and read up on. Only down side is there are limited amount of questions, I think there was approximately 150 questions but each of these questions are extremely valuable in learning the concepts and how the questions are structure and getting your mindset into the right frame of mind for how the questions will be presented to you for the exam. This test engine is very well put together but needs more content and updates. Another reason I used this engine was the person behind (Clement I think the guys name is) the exam engine did one for the CISSP and I spent a lot time on this test engine to help me prepare for CISSP but the test engine has a lot more questions and content for the CISSP vs the CCSP but still very valuable.

iPhone Apps I used

IT & Security Pocket Prep 2020. (8/10) At time of writing this the app had 500 questions. This is a great app, every opportunity away from my study/office I would use this app and Wiley Efficient Learning App as my main 2 go to apps for CCSP questions. I must of done the 500 questions twice on this app. Some of the questions are somewhat easy and some of the explanations are little light on content but they all give a reference to Daniel Carter book and page number which is very handy to reread sections of Daniel's book.
Wiley Efficient Learning App Sybex CCSP Offical ISC2: (9/10) As far I can see the questions are the same as the book Official Practice Tests 2nd edition by Ben but very well presented and put together in the iphone app. This App is great to use and gives good explanations to the correct answers. The desktop version has a slightly better interface and different options for taking the questions but still a great app to have on the go on the phone, I would use this app just before going to sleep and first thing in the morning to consistently do blocks of 20 questions at a time to test myself and identify areas I was weak at and make sure any questions I didn’t understand I would read up on them from the books during the day to better understand the concepts behind the questions I got wrong.
Udemy: (2/10) horrible to use, stay away from it unless you're really desperate for additional questions.
CCSP by Alexandru Cebotari: (7/10) I only got this app 2 weeks out from exam date as additional source of questions and really liked it but I didn’t get a chance to really go through many questions as I had too much other content to read, learn and plus the other test engines I felt was giving what I needed to help me focus in on my weak areas.
Wiley Test Engine obtained from Ben Malisow ISC2 book for Official Practice Tests 2nd edition (10/10), there are links in back of question book to get the online test engine, I went through every question in the book approximately 6 weeks out from the exam date and went through them again approximately 2 weeks before exam using the online test engine. These are great questions and typical of the exam style but keep in mind you will not see same question come up in exam but the concepts/topics behind Wiley test engine questions will come up, so make sure you clearly understand the topic behind each question. For example if I got a question wrong, I would open up my books read all the topics from each book and also google the topic to make sure I clearly understand the topic. Then I would repeat the questions I got wrong a week later or few days later. Another nice feature of the online test engine is the ability to search the engine to find all questions related to a specific word or topic e.g. find all questions on the word 'portability' . This test engine keeps track of all your questions, you can do study mode, exam mode and random. I stayed with random and consistently study mode to make sure I understood everything.
CSA Security Guidance For Critical Areas In Cloud computing v4.0 & also quickly read over v3. (6/10) Good as an introduction and basic concepts but I found them somewhat difficult to read and dry.
Online training InternetWorkDefense.com (7/10) : I purchased the downloaded version which is $100 for a prerecorded coarse by Larry Greenblatt. I would recommend doing the 5 day prerecorded classes if your new/introduction to CCSP or you find this approach works for you or CCSP is your first ISC2 exam. I only did the first 3 days which is approximately 24 hours of watching the prerecorded classes, for me I found Larry great to give the context and really helps with real examples of the content to help you remember key areas but I felt I needed a lot more in-depth technical reading and hands on with the content by reading the books and researching why I was weak in certain topics. But if prerecorded content/classes if your preferred choice for learning then I highly recommend Larry here to help you or you can to do Larry's live classes.
Hopefully the above helps someone and wish them all the best in the exam.

2020.08.08 23:52 _Penelope__ [ROLEPLAY] Goods & Services

Manhattan, a previous concrete jungle, now one of glass and steel. People walk the streets, flanked by silicon clones, carrying shopping bags and walking dogs. Women in sharp-lined skirts and nominal jackets, their faces covered in a thin veneer of dye and chemicals. Adverts for Coca-Cola, TS-Bots, and McDonald's slightly cover the windows in a digital facade.
Joshua Lange of Bethesda Maryland. His ghastly white skin, the peppering of black stubble, the piercing green eyes. When he was four he found a rabbit in his backyard, he gave it carrots and spent the whole day with it; Joshua then put the rabbit in a plastic bag and threw it in the river. When he was 17 he put bleach in his teacher's coffee for failing his past test, he didn’t put enough for him to die but his teacher was hospitalized for 3 months.
Joshua was diagnosed with schizophrenia, ADD, Anxiety, and Bipolar disorder when he turned 21. After not showing up to his 3rd annual psych evaluation he went missing and has been ever since. Joshua lives in subsidized housing in The Bronx. Joshua is unhappy. Joshua went to Washington one day. Joshua then knew how to become happy, and he reported it to The Washington Post.
Joshua stood in Penn Station, the rush of the crowd surrounding him. Millions of lives, of thoughts of emotions of choices, walking to trains to billions of destinations. The PA speakers alerted travelers to coming trains, and remind them that androids are never entitled seats. His phone rings, the iPhone Alpha, caller ID, “The Company.”
THE COMPANY: Is it done?
JOSHUA: They’re searching the area now, they’ll find him soon.
THE COMPANY: Good. Go to Jordana’s on West 32nd. Kiara will be waiting.
They hang up, the crowd still surrounds him, swirling and grasping for the next step forward. He walks out into Manhattan, the swarms of drones blocking the view of the clouds, the click of women’s heels on the hard concrete. He walks along the crowded Midtown sidewalk, bikes and Via Cabs pass by, men in suits flirt with obvious TS-EX bots and an android empty a corner garbage can.
Jordana’s, a traditional bar in an oh-so progressive city, at least they have a holographic sign. It’s dark inside, the smell of polish on the wooden floors and the sound of a fading news report. Kiara sat in a booth, her black skin meshing into the green leather of the seat. Her kinky hair grew as a halo around her, and atop it sat a topiary of flowers, roses, and hydrangeas, made in factories of above.
Kiara looks across the room, to the bell releasing a little melody due to Joshua’s presence. She turns her heel into the corridor of booths and the bar. Joshua sits.
KIARA: I assume it went well.
JOSHUA: Very.
KIARA: Discreetly?
Joshua looks down at the wooden table, Kiara sighs.
KIARA: Joshua is necessary that it be done discreetly. What the fuck did you do?
JOSHUA: Fuck fuck FUCK! I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry!
Joshua lifts his legs up onto the booth’s seat and fills his eye sockets with his knees. Kiara reaches her hand out to him.
KIARA: Joshua Joshua! It’s okay please, It’s okay. It’s fine, we’ll just implicate someone else seriously; it’s okay.
Joshua lifts his head up. His puffy eyes staring back at Kirara.
JOSHUA: Really?
Kiara smiles.
KIARA: Really.
Kiara sighs once more and moves her hand away from Joshua.
KIARA: Well, they’ve sent us more targets. Yours being the mistress of the TS CFO Ezra Krueger and mine... Miami mayor Kyle Fernandez.
JOSHUA: Why?
KIARA: Joshua you know; they don’t tell us why we just do. I have a plane ticket to Miami and yours to- oh Santa Domingo. I guess she and him are on vacation.
JOSHUA: When are the flights?
KIARA: Mine’s today, yours is tomorrow.
JOSHUA: Well then, off to JFK right?
KIARA: Yeah.
Kiara stands and begins to exit the dimly lit bar.
KIARA: Oh and Joshua, stay safe.
Kiara exits into the street, and Joshua stares back at where she once sat.
Joshua’s apartment is dark, aging, and filthy. Dust sits atop the bare kitchenette, and the empty cabinets lay home to a family of cockroaches. His windows look out onto a dark Bronx street, hosting a singular prostitute and multiple gang members. Joshua got a taco bell on his way home, trying to the new way the restaurant ordered their three ingredients. Joshua sits on his ripped couch, in front of the modern glass TV.
NEWSCASTER: Just this morning officers found a grisly scene at PepsiCEO Philip Deverne was found dead in his Penthouse. Police are still investigating but it’s believed to have been an act of foul play, and the homicide unit will be on the case. Currently, we know little about the suspect except for this image here taken by a MAIOS security camera.
The screen flashes to an image of Joshua, in a ski mask exiting Deverne’s building. Joshua sees himself, for what he is, for what he does on a daily basis, for what he does to other people. Joshua throws his drink at the TV, tipping it over as it shatters onto his floor. “This is the last one,” he tells himself. There have been hundreds, possibly thousands, “last ones.”

2020.08.05 23:07 aurorab0920 Thanks for listening

Today marks one month since Dday. My (26f) husband (32m) has been cheating on me with the same person since Feb/2017, 6 months before we got married in Oct/2017.
So much has happened since and I feel a way I honestly can’t describe. Since that day, I found this page and have been reading every day but finally managed to write down what has happened and where I’m at so, for anyone reading, thank you.
I met my husband when I was 19 and he was 25. We were friends for a while and then started dating. He was my first and I genuinely believed he’d be my first and last. We lived together before getting married and it was a really big step for me since my family raised me to believe in marriage before sex/living together. I loved him so much and I believed in us so I decided to move in with him trusting that together we’d make a great team and work through any problems with open communication.
From the beginning of our relationship, I was very open with him about my feelings towards infidelity. Of course no one wants to be cheated on but I explained that this was especially tough for me because of my family’s history. My mother cheated on my dad and I discovered it, kept quiet and eventually confessed it. My brother also cheated on his wife and all of their separation, reconciliation and healing process happened while they lived with us at my parents home. All this happened before I was 16 and it feels as if in a weird way, I went through those 2 infidelities as well. So, I told him about these 2 very private things and expressed how it was something so painful for me still to this day. As a result of those events, my biological father and I no longer have contact, my sister in law is still around and is an amazing woman but I’ve witnessed her change into a sort of bitter woman. And even when friends of mine go through it, it is like I’m going through it too, I know it’s weird and maybe even selfish to take their pain and suffering but that’s how I feel. I told him that infidelity was something that would destroy me and that I couldn’t come back from. I asked him to be open with me, that even if it was to leave or to point out my mistakes, just be open. He sympathized and promised he’d never hurt me that way.
I have a small family but we’re very close and it’s something I expressed since the beginning. I don’t mean we’d be living with them or that they dictate my life but that I did take their opinion into consideration and try to be around as much as reasonably possible. Every year for Christmas, my family would rotate at either my mothers house or my brothers which is about 4 hours away from my mother and I. He knew this and for Christmas we included his family in our plans.
Christmas 2016 was the “cause” according to him. That year, my family was going to gather at my brothers. We usually begin making plans around summer since we have to travel. Around May/June that year, I asked my husband, boyfriend at the time, to request time off as we’d be making the trip. I had talked to his family about the trip and they were sorry we couldn’t be there for Christmas Day but we made plans to gather once we returned and everything seemed to work out okay no problem. Around November I again asked him about getting the time off and he said he had not requested it. We talked about it and he said he did not want to take time off work. This was upsetting because since the summer, we’d been talking about this and it was the first I heard about him not wanting to go. I asked if it was that he didn’t want to go or that he didn’t want to take time off work, he said the second. I teased and said hey I’ll help you out if you’re worried about bills, I just want you there. He said no and then said he already committed to his boss about working Christmas that year. He then asked me to stay behind that year and wait for him to spend Christmas together. I was upset because if he worked, he would be off around 2-3 am and then he was working the next day as well. I didn’t want to spend Christmas alone and his family wasn’t as united as mine so I didn’t want to spend it with them either. I know this was selfish of me and I realize I could have done more at the time but I didn’t. We talked about it and I told him I was not cancelling my trip I had been planning and saving for months and told him he should have said something sooner. Christmas came and I went on my trip, still asking him to come but he said no. When I came back everything was good, he greeted me lovingly and said he’d missed me. We carried on with our life.
The discoveries started on June 15, 2020. That day, my husbands aunt passed away and we went to see his grandmother who wasn’t doing too well. While at his grandmothers house, my husband and his mother spent most of the time at his grandmothers room. I stayed in the living room and after my cell phone died, I asked my husband to use his. I was looking for his music and there were so many music apps when I found this app that appeared to be for music (he has an Android and I have an iPhone so I’m not too familiar with his phone). It asked for a password and it just seemed too fishy so I googled it. Long story short, it was to hide pictures, videos, texts, etc.
In the past when we were dating, I had discovered pictures of girls from the internet on his phone and even though I was told by several people that it was “normal” for guys to do that, it hurt and I didn’t like it. So I talked to him about how it made me feel and he promised to stop. It happened again and he again promised to stop. Then I no longer found that stuff and I didn’t have curiosity to look anymore because he made me feel so confident. So when I found this I immediately thought that again, it was going to be pictures, like before. I was upset but given what was happening with his aunt, I didn’t bring it up and was supportive to him and his family. Once at home I thought about it because the last time it happened I was so upset that I told him to me it was like cheating, I know maybe dramatic, but it genuinely hurt. I couldn’t bring myself to bring it up now because I thought in my head “okay so it’s going to be pictures and what are you going to do about it?” Almost like, why even bring it up. So I stayed quiet for a few weeks, trying to ignore it.
On July 5th, I spent the day at his family’s celebrating his sisters birthday and he couldn’t make it because he was working. His family and I have had a tough relationship as his sister battles with addiction and in the past while intoxicated tried to attacked me. As a result of me speaking up about that, his mother ignored me for over a year and then one day called me as if nothing had ever happened and I went with it just to have a “normal” relationship with them. Now things were better but because of those past things, I always felt on edge around them, especially when he wasn’t there with me.
I returned home that evening and he was there waiting for me. That evening he became upset over something small and was being rude. Out of anger I decided to finally bring up the app on his phone. When he finally sat down with me I asked “If I ask you something will you tell me the truth?” Yes “If it leads you to do something, you’ll do the right thing?” Yes. I grabbed the phone, opened the app and before asking to unlock it, he snatched it from my hand. We went back and forth and he apologized, said it was pictures and said he’d delete them. After more back and forth and me threatening to leave regardless of what was there for the simple fact of him not opening it, he confessed to have cheated on me. As this was coming out, I remained silent. Looking back, I’m surprised because I was an expressive person and I didn’t have trouble communicating about my feelings. He then thought that I wouldn’t want to look in the app because he told me. I asked for it and he still didn’t want to hand it over but eventually he did. What I found was that he lied about the little he told me. I work as a legal assistant and I have to interview people daily as part of fact checking. How could he think I was going to believe the dumb lies he was saying. Everything was lies and lies and when I followed his story to then reveal how that did not make sense, he would then lie again. He tried to lie about it being once only in Feb/2017 but the pictures and texts said otherwise. Then he said he had stopped talking to her since 2019, but he had gotten a new phone in March 2020 which he actually complained about how he wasn’t able to transfer any of his pictures or files over to. So I asked, how did you get the “old” pictures on the new phone. Another lie. Everything was just lies and I was piecing it all together. Then I see the AP’s Facebook and she has a small child about 2 years old. I ask if that’s his son, he gets offended that I ask. She’s married and has other children. He revealed he’d been lying about working late, that he’d taken the AP to one of his work sites over the weekends despite telling me I couldn’t go anymore like before and so many others things. He even brought in gifts from her into our home and had them in display. I didn’t know what to feel and I knew I couldn’t believe him so I asked him to call her and he did but she didn’t answer and I’m now glad she didn’t because I don’t know what I would have even said. He said he did it because he was so hurt when I chose my family over him in Christmas 2016 by going on the trip instead of staying with him.
That night I went to bed alone and he stayed on the sofa. I took the phone and continued going through the app. As if what I found was not enough. He had pictures of our mutual friends, a friend of his who I always felt off about, an old roommate we had and even his best friends wife who happens to be one of my closest friends. On top of that, he had pictures of my sister who is 17 saved as well. Those pictures I believe he just took himself from their facebooks based on what I saw. I questioned him and he said he was attracted to all of them including my sister.
There are so many details but I think that’s enough to get the idea of what’s happening. The next day he took me to work as we had 1 car which he used for the most part. On the ride he tried talking but I didn’t say anything back and I gave him the phone back. Work was a blur. I work with 2 of my closest friends and confided in them everything except the part about the pictures of my friends and sister. Til this day I haven’t told anyone about that and I don’t know why. For some reason I feel ashamed of that. I don’t get it. I decided to stay at my moms for a bit. I went straight to my moms after work and broke down with her and my sister. I had to go back to get clothes and personal things. He tried to stop me by unpacking my bags and standing in front of the door but eventually let me leave.
I stayed with my mother for one week and asked him to leave the apartment with his things so I could return. He agreed and when I returned, most of his things were there. We talked and he said why take his things if he’d be coming back. So, in his head it’s all just a matter of time. Around this time, my mother made arrangements to move and her apartment would then become available. Everything worked out in my favor and I’m set to rent the apartment starting in September. I felt scared because of the way he reacted when I was just trying to take a bag of clothes. I don’t believe him to be a bad person but the way he’s been acting since is just eye opening. I decided to move out and leave him because I honestly don’t see this working. I know it’s recent and I should take more time for such a decision but at least for now, it’s what I need.
I in turn, became sneaky and shady by moving out without telling him and taking most of our things including the car. I want to say I’ve paid off over 50% of the loan and it’s under both names. He is a collector of some figures and has about 3k in those but I didn’t take or destroy any. I left him his personal things and even cleaned the apartment out. I did take all the things acquired together after much consideration and almost leaving with only my documents. Part of the reason I also left without telling him was so that when I would give my 30 days I’d be completely out since our apartment manager is his mother. I knew as soon as I gave the notice she’d notify him and I was scared of what was to come. I met with him the Sunday I finished moving out and gave him the apartment key letting him know I moved out. He cried and apologized, said he was sorry and begged for another chance. Then he said that the AP was terrified of me coming out to ruin her life. It just revealed he’s still in contact with her. I stopped going into the back and forth of things. That day I told him that I’d be going to the leasing office to sign the docs to get myself off the lease. He asked to give me a hug and tried to kiss me. This upset me and I told him it was the last time he’d get the chance.
What’s happened since is that his mother is working things out to only give him the deposit back. It’s so obvious and ridiculous how they’re acting about it but I’m done. I don’t want anything else to do with them so I’m not going to fight it. The deposit is $400 and my peace of mind is not worth that. They’re acting like all this is happening because I decided to move out.
He told me at first to take everything, that he didn’t want anything but when I did, he called to complain about taking the games and movies. I’ve made it very clear I’m not returning anything and then he said some games were gifts from his family. I asked him to send me a list and that I’d try to get them back to him if I hadn’t sold them yet. He then said he would help me pay off the car (about 2k), since I took it, in exchange for me giving him the gaming console and games and dvds back. I said no because I’m starting to see everything is just leverage for him. I’m still with my mom since she’s set to move out in two weeks but I won’t have my own place until September as the unit needs paint and some small repairs.
I feel so lost and weird. I know right now I’m being distracted by my mom and sister since coming back home is it’s own journey but I’m scared of what my life will be soon. I had a glimpse the 2 weeks I spent back at my apartment before moving out but I don’t know, it’s strange. I’ve tried to think of kissing him or even being intimate with him again and I can’t, I don’t feel anything, any desire to do that, to even be with him. I feel that I miss our life but then it’s all a lie. His relationship with AP was longer than our marriage. That’s another part that hurts so much. He took what was supposed to be my only marriage from me. Why would he marry me if he was already doing that. We don’t have any children and he’s now saying he purposely avoided then possibly because of his guilt despite us talking about trying to start a family. I am slowly letting go of all our things to replace them because I don’t want them. My mother says things are just things but I can’t see them like that. I feel sad but it’s a sadness I try to hide and I think it’s because I’m constantly around my mom, sister and stepdad who I consider my dad. I’ve been taking long drives in the afternoon and cry. I cry at night sometimes. But then sometimes I don’t feel anything. Not mad or sad or happy. Just like in a still breathing mode. The first 3 weeks I wasn’t able to get good sleep, I’d finally sleep around 3-4 am and I spent days without eating. This week I’m having a sleeping problem as I’m sleeping too much. I’m falling asleep around 8pm and oversleeping for work. I’ve even been napping during my lunch break and feel so tired during the day. I hate what is happening and I don’t know what to do. I’m scared of what other things are to come once I live alone. What I know for sure now is that I definitely need my own space.
He’s been contacting me almost every day since. He sends me pictures and videos of us and repeatedly says he’s sorry. He’s now offering to go to counseling which really just upsets me because when I asked for that in the past, he’d say we’d do it later and never did. I realize I need to seek that for myself despite anyone else’s personal journey. He says he’s willing to do anything to fix things and is making it seem like it’s now on me to make it work or not. The affair is one part but everything else, I don’t even know what to say. I feel confused because now it’s like it’s on me. I feel so naive that this happened and I never even realized it. I really never had any suspicions. How can I trust someone again, even if I feel secure, like I did now, what if it happens again. I’ve noticed my temper has been short with my sister and I feel terrible because it’s not her fault. I’ve apologized to her but I’m realizing I’m having a hard time opening up about what I’m feeling when before I was one to open up first to encourage others to do so as well.
I really don’t know where I’m going or what’ll happen next. I just know I have to do this for myself. My birthday is 2 days after I move in to my new apartment and then our anniversary is next. I don’t know if it’s wrong for me to feel this decided this soon but I just don’t see myself going back. I feel scared but also ready. I’ve been reading a lot on here and it breaks my heart how people treat the ones who love them most. Thank you to anyone reading. I know it’s long and I tried to keep it short but it’s just what I needed to get off my chest. I’m open to any advice or correction or comments. Thanks again.

2020.07.30 19:15 elmexiguero How To Handle Finances for the New (and Existing) exJW

During my time in the borg, I have met far too many witnesses that have absolutely no grasp on their finances. It's especially sad to see in older and elderly witnesses. Many of them have to rely on the generosity of other witnesses and government help to get by. But you can't really blame them! We are taught to put the meetings and the preaching work above all else. We are even told to quit our jobs if they don't give us meeting or assembly days off. On top of that, many of these witnesses are planning their lives and finances around the idea of "the world could end tomorrow", so what good are material things?
As you leave the organization and learn the truth about the truth, you've probably come to the realization that no, the world is not going to end tomorrow. You have your whole life ahead of you! But that also means you need to prepare for your future, your grand plans, and your retirement. I've read many posts here from young exJWs and new exJWs that feel lost when they leave and are worried about providing for themselves after getting shunned by everyone they know and losing their entire support network. Well I believe that the best way to take control of your life is by taking control of your finances first! After all, you will just be faced with a mountain of stress if you aren’t able to maintain yourself and achieve your dreams in the world. You might even consider doing the unthinkable… Going back 0_0
Since leaving the Borg, I have gotten my bachelor's degree in finance. After trying out several different positions and companies, I now own my own Capital Management company. In short, I provide financial analysis services and advice for individuals and companies, as well as manage various investment portfolios. I figured why not help how I can? While this post is primarily targeted towards those just leaving or planning to leave, I hope everyone can find this advice helpful as you prepare for your bright future outside the Borg. I'm going to start with the very basics and work our way up. This is going to be very long, but I promise I'll try to make it entertaining and relevant to the exJW.
But first, legal disclaimer time - Don't sue me bro. I'm not a financial advisor. This is not financial advice. Do your own research. Don't YOLO Tesla Puts. Don't leave your inheritance to the Borg.
With that out of the way, lets dive in.
**1. Open a bank account! **
This seems very basic, but it is the most critical step to begin your path to financial freedom. I know many younger people may have relied on their parents to “hold” their money or had a joint account with a parent, but it’s time to control your own money. Don't just stuff money under your mattress or in your sock. At the bank of your choice, open both a checking account and a savings account. My advice for a checking account is Wells Fargo; they have branches across the US, as well as many thousands of ATMs all over the place. It's helpful to be able to easily get to a branch to talk to a human when you need help with your account. For savings accounts, my recommendation is Ally Bank. This is a fully online bank, so no branches, but thanks to that they typically have among the highest interest rates of the industry. They also have the highest rated customer service for a bank. You call them up, wait for a couple minutes, and you're talking to a human - no more yelling at a robot when you need help with your account.
Earning interest on your money is important because otherwise you are literally losing money thanks to a little thing called inflation. Briefly, this means that the value of $1 (or whatever your local currency) goes down over time. Typically in the US, it's around 2% per year. Over your whole lifetime of not dying in a fiery Armageddon, that's a whole lot of percents. Interest rates don't always match inflation for a few complex reasons, but Ally will usually pay you 1-2% a year on your money. That's better than 0% on the money under your mattress.
Most companies offer direct deposit for your paycheck so your money can go directly into your account rather than having to deal with checks, plus its free unlike cashing checks. Having a bank account also makes it easier to pay all your bills, and holy sh*t will you have bills when you're independent. But we'll get to that later.
On top of paying you interest and keeping your money safe, a huge reason to have and use a bank account is that you will always know exactly how much money you have, how much money you spend, and where your money went. This brings me to the next point...
**2. Make a budget! **
The next step to your financial Independence is making a budget to see how much money goes in and out of your account on a monthly basis. I recommend using the free Mint app by Quicken. This lets you link all your bank accounts, credit cards, investment accounts, and large assets in one place to keep track of everything. They also have a budget function where you can type in what you want to budget for every category, and they will automatically keep track of how you're doing every month.
Once you know how much money is going out every month, you know how much needs to come in. If more money is going out than is coming in, or you need to increase your savings, then you need to...
**3. Trim the fat off your budget! **
Pretty much all of us are guilty of spending more than we should. I mean we're accustomed to getting our Starbucks coffee right after the service group, going to our favorite return visit - the donut shop, stopping for lunch with the friends after knocking on 2 doors, and donating to global pedophile ring... But I digress. Now it's time to trim the fat! Any unnecessary expenses need to go in order to succeed in your final future. Now that you have a budget, you'll actually be able to tell what you can cut down on.
If you are spending $100+ on Starbuck coffee, cut that sh*t out! I don't care how many stars you're earning. Buy yourself a $10 drip coffee maker or a $20 stovetop espresso maker (even though its more work, I prefer the espresso maker). Then buy a bag of your favorite ground coffee, some milk or half and half, and a sh*t ton of sugar. Want to play barista in your own home? Buy some flavored coffee syrups to add to your coffee. You'll be able to recreate your Starbucks coffee flavored sugar beverage for a fraction of the cost. Usually under $1. You can even misspell your name on your cup for a more authentic experience.
Fairly universal expenses are Food, rent, and utilities. But even these can be cut down on.
For food, you might be tempted to go out and eat, get some fast food, or some takeout. Maybe even just survive off meals from the frozen aisle. These are the easiest options. But you will quickly rack up a significant food bill over the course of the month. Instead, try your hand at cooking! Start easy with some pasta. $1.50 for a box of pasta, and $2.50 for a jar of sauce. The ratio I use is 1 box of pasta to 1/2 a jar of sauce. This leaves my pasta with plenty of flavor and color but not a huge pool of sauce in my bowl. To cook - boil & salt water, throw pasta in for 10 minutes, drain, add sauce, mix, done! (*Instructions unclear, got baptized into a cult*). For this $2.75 you should end up with 3-4 servings of food (Less than $1 each!). Toss the leftovers in some Tupperware and you have your lunch for work and another dinner! My advice is to look up your favorite recipes online and just practice. You will very quickly learn how to make lots of great food and significantly cut down on your food budget. I just learned how to make Nigerian Jollof rice by reading recipes online! Another way to cut down on food expenses, BUY THE STORE BRAND!!!! There is absolutely no reason to buy name brand foods IMO. Kroger is my favorite, but Great Value and Market Pantry are just as good. You can also buy the off brands. Fruity pebbles and Dyno bites? Same sh*t.
For rent and utilities, get a roommate! By getting a roommate you can cut your rent in half. If getting a roommate isn't an option, then try looking for another smaller or cheaper apartment. If that's not an option, then go the opposite direction and find a bigger apartment with a roommate! Getting a roommate is the most effective way to cut down on your rent expense. Sure, it may be awkward at first to live with someone else, but your wallet will thank you and you may even make a friend! We all know those are in short supply when you leave the Borg...
Subscriptions are the biggest killer of any budget. They leach off your bank account every single month like a cancer. For years I subscribed to the gentleman’s box to get my tie and colorful socks of the month to rock at the meetings. But after leaving, I can count on one hand how many times I've worn a suit. Now I have a closet full of ties and a drawer full of socks and nowhere to wear them. Subscriptions have got to go!
After having watched years of the broadcast (*cough* propaganda *cough*), you may now be tempted to subscribe to every streaming service you can find to fill your brain with meaningless worldly TV. But don't overdo it! You don't need Netflix, Hulu, HBO, AND Disney+. Pick your favorite streaming service with the most shows you like to watch, and stick with that one for a while. You can only watch one thing at a time after all. Once you get bored with it, cancel it, and try another one. You can cancel these and restart them at any time, and for the most part the content isn't going anywhere. There’s also YouTube, which is free. There is a mind-blowing amount of professionally made content on YouTube completely free, I guarantee you will find channels and shows you like watching. Sure, there's commercials, but that just gives you time to look at a couple memes on exjwhumor.
These are just some basic suggestions for how to cut out or reduce some large expenses. If you want to dive deeper in to saving even in the small places in your budget, you should explore some ideas of a frugal lifestyle. I find it kind of fun seeing everywhere you can save money by adding just a small amount of effort. Over time, these small efforts can really start to add up to some serious savings.
Once you cut down on your expenses, you should have a nice jingle in your pocket left over at the end of every month. **Don't forget to treat yourself! ** I'm not telling you to buy a jet ski or the newest iPhone with your extra money. In fact, you should be saving most of that extra money! (But we'll get to that next). You have just gotten out of a long-term toxic relationship and you need to take care of yourself. Give yourself a nice little discretionary budget every month to do whatever you want to do with it. If you like getting a manicure or pedicure (fellas, you don't know what you're missing out on), treat yourself! If you want to go get an ice cream or some dessert, treat yourself! Want to buy that video game that you have been dying to play? Treat yourself! If possible for your budget situation, try to give yourself $100 a month (or whatever you can) to do something you want to do.
**4. Start an emergency fund! **
The current pandemic and economic crisis show better than anything why you need to have an emergency fund. One day to the next you could be out of work, of you could have your hours cut, or you could fall ill and not be able to work. The average American can't afford a $500 emergency, and I don't want that to be you now that you don't have your support network anymore. Your emergency fund should be in its own high interest savings account. You want it to be easily accessible for when you need it, but not so easy that you might use it when you see a top at H&M that you just can't live without.
The rule of thumb is to keep 6 months worth of expenses, though having more doesn't hurt. Set your own goal based on what you think you need. The Mint app can also help you set and track a savings goal. On your budget, look at your monthly expenses and multiply x 6. This number may seem daunting at first, but remember that you don't need to get it all at once. Take your time and plan it based on your budget. Now that you have trimmed the fat off your budget, you might have some leftover money burning a hole in your pocket. But don't succumb to the temptation to spend! At the end of the month (or the end of the pay period), move all your leftover money into your emergency fund! No matter how big or small, contribute to your emergency fund every month.
But now that you have this pile of money staring at you in your bank account, you're going to need to set yourself some ground rules. Limit yourself on what you can spend this money on. Don't break open this piggy bank just because its Prime day and everything on your wish list is on sale, or because Gabe Newell decided to put an 80% discount on all your favorite Steam games. This is an EMERGENCY fund! Use it when your car gets a flat tire and you can't afford to fix it. Use it when you get an unexpected medical bill you can't pay. And of course, use it if you're laid off or can't work.
**5. Get a credit card and build credit! **
Getting a credit card may seem counter intuitive because you're taking out debt, but that's not really what it means. When you buy things on a credit card, after you get your statement at the end of the billing cycle you get a whole month to pay it interest free. *whispers* It's free money. The key is PAY OFF YOUR CREDIT CARDS! The interest rates on credit cards are f*cking painful, don't do that to yourself. If you're carrying a credit card balance, then pay that sh*t off as fast as you can or it will snowball into a nightmare.
When you get a credit card, they check your credit. If you have no credit history, it’s kind of hard to get a credit card but not impossible. However, it is nearly impossible to get any other type of loan, at least at any reasonable interest rate. This will especially hurt when you are trying to buy a house in the future. However, once you get a credit card, they will start reporting your credit usage every month to the credit bureaus which will start to build your credit history. Remember how you thought you would no longer get graded on anything when you left school? Guess what! You get graded on how well you can manage your debt. If your balance stays reasonable and you pay off your balance when its due, your credit score will go up. If you max out your cards, and let the balance roll, your credit score will go down.
Download Credit Karma, type in your info, and check out your credit score for free. It even updates every 7 days so you can keep track of how you’re doing. If you have absolutely zero credit history, it may not work right away. But that doesn't mean it won't work or that you can't get a credit card. It is very very very important to know your credit score and to keep it high because banks will judge you based on your credit score the minute you walk through the door. Remember how worldlies looked in jeans and a T-Shirt the first time they came to a meeting? That’s how a bank will see you with your sh*tty credit score. You gotta pump those numbers up!
Discover bank is a great credit card provider for starter cards. But you can google "started cards" and find tons of lists of different starter cards. If this is your first credit card, just spam applications until you get approved for one. Pay attention to your credit limit. A pretty standard limit is for your first card is $1,000. You may look at that and think "Cool! I always wanted to buy those sweet pinky rings the GB wear!" WRONG! Use your credit responsibly. Ideally you want to keep your credit usage under 30% of your limit. At $1000 this would be $300. But always remember to only spend what you can actually pay off when the bill comes due. Follow your budget!
Once you get your first card and manage your credit nicely, you should try applying for cards once a year. Pick a month where you will apply to several credit cards to expand your access to credit. For me this is the month of November. I will usually apply to 3 credit cards I've thoroughly researched. Focus on credit cards with no fees. There is absolutely no reason you should be paying an annual fee on a credit card when there are so many free ones out there. Also look for cash back cards. It means you will earn money just by spending money. *whispers* It's free money. Even if I get approved for all 3 credit cards, I won't use them. I'll just throw these somewhere super safe like my underwear drawer. If one of your new cards gives you a significantly higher credit limit, or gives you lots of cash back, then start using that as your primary and put the rest somewhere safe. Effectively, you are raising your credit limit every year while (hopefully) keeping your expenses the same. On your credit report it will look like you have access to a huge amount of money, but use a smaller and smaller portion of it. It will make you look responsible and in turn raise your credit score over time. Now when you walk into a bank, they'll look at you like you would look at the visiting speaker from South America when they walked into the kingdom hall. Banks may even take you out to eat after (with all that cash back they give you).
As you move through your life, it is very important to have a good credit score. That is what will allow you to get a good rate on a car loan (I don't recommend that, but that’s a story for another day), and also get a good rate on a mortgage when you buy a house. Debt isn't always a bad thing as long as you know how to manage it well.
**6. Make a Career Move! **
This may seem like a crazy option, but it serves a great purpose. If you are stuck in a dead-end job, if you don't make the kind of money you want to be making, or you don't see making a career out of your job, then its time to switch jobs! We have been told to avoid higher education our whole lives but that just forces us in to sh*t dead end jobs dreaming about how wonderful paradise will be instead of going out and grabbing life by the horns. Invest in yourself! Invest in your knowledge! Quarantine lock down is the perfect time to do that, and it doesn't look like its wrapping up anytime soon. Personally, I'm taking online classes to become a Real Estate Broker. This will let me expand what I am able to do with my company and increase my income. These classes were only $800, compared to going to college for 4 years to the tune of $20k+ per year. If you have some savings, use that to invest in yourself! If you want to change to a different career path, then look into what you need to do to make the move. Look for online courses or trade school if you don't want to go to college years or incur lots of debt.
Here's some examples of careers that don't take a lot of education but can take your income to the next level:
*Real Estate Agent or Broker
*Plumber
*Computer Technician
*Programmer
*Electrician
*Electric Pole Climber
*Mechanic
The world is full of options. Now that you aren't committed to studying for 2 meetings a week, attending 2 meetings every week, reading the bible every day, personal study, family study, monthly broadcast, and service on your off days, you should have much more free time to invest in yourself. Take advantage of that and move up in the world! Do what you never could have while drinking the Kool aid.
**7. Side Hustle! **
A great way to increase your income is to take on a side hustle. There are so many you can do (just google side hustles), but some of the easiest to get in to are being a food delivery driver. This is especially good business right now during the pandemic with everyone staying home. Sign up with Doordash, Postmates, Uber Eats, InstaCart, or any other delivery service you can. After gas and maintenance, you will typically earn an average hourly rate of $10-$15. Sometimes more. Like I mentioned in the last point, you should have a lot more free time to yourself now that you are not drinking the Kool aid. Why not take advantage of that time to make more money?
If your primary income covers all your expenses, you can use all your side hustle income towards your emergency fund, general savings, or investing. Personally, I use all my side hustle income towards increasing my investment accounts. Rather than making $10 an hour, in the long run you can turn that money into much much more by investing it.
**8. Start Investing! (Retirement Accounts) **
Now we're getting to the good stuff. Now that you have a bank account, a budget, and an emergency fund, it's time to start thinking about your future. The world isn't going to end in our lifetimes, although 2020 looks pretty dicey so who knows. You are going to want to stop working one day in your old age and relying on government cheese doesn’t give you too much freedom. This is where retirement accounts come in. The two primary types of retirement accounts are an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) and a 401k (four-oh-one-khay). The main difference is that an IRA is self directed, ie. you fully manage the account, and a 401k is employer directed, ie. your employer or benefit provider manages the account.
Let's start with a 401k. Most companies where you would have a career offer a 401k as part of your benefit package. The Benefit part of this package is that your employer will give you free money!!!! Kinda. Back in the olden days of the pre-1980s, a company would pay you a salary, called a pension, when you retired at 60ish as a thank you for your loyalty and career with that company. Then in 1978, 401ks became a thing and employers realized they didn't have to treat you like a human and reward your loyalty anymore. Instead, most employers will match your 401k contributions. It varies by company, but an example is that if you put 6% of your salary into your 401k, your employer will match your contribution adding another 6%. They may match it in full or in part, again it all depends on the company rules. But in some cases this could double how much money goes in to your retirement account just by using this one easy trick. The key to a 401k is that the money has to come directly out of your paycheck, you can't go back and add more later. But this can be a benefit; if you never had that money in your bank account to spend on a pair of Yeezys, it’s almost like you never earned it so you won't miss it. Plus, when you finally do get access to that money in retirement, it will be worth more and you'll be able to buy even more pairs of Yeezys!
On the other hand, with an IRA you can add however much you want, whenever you want, up to the legal limit. The current IRA contribution limit in 2020 is $6,000 per year. There are some tricky ways you can get around that but I won't get in to that here. Just google "backdoor Roth IRA" if you plan on contributing more than $6,000 a year. With an IRA, you get to choose the provider, you get to chose what you invest in, and you get to chose when and how much to invest. If you’re young, a high stock (high risk, high return) and low bond (low risk, low return) mix is best for your retirement account. You can afford more risk since you have more time to recover. However, as you get older you will want to slowly reduce how much you have in stocks and increase how much you have in bonds. The older you get, the more your risk tolerance goes down.
Now let’s talk Roth. To Roth or not to Roth? Well that depends. If you're under 59, you get charged penalties to access your IRA, or 55 for your 401k. In other words, you aren't supposed to access these accounts till you are (close to) retirement age. When you contribute money to a traditional IRA or Traditional 401k, you are contributing pre-tax money. You won't pay taxes on that money until you take it out at retirement age. The issue with that is that hopefully, that money will be worth a sh*t ton more when you retire than when you put it in. You'll be paying taxes on a bigger pile of money! Thats where a Roth IRA and Roth 401k come in. With a Roth account, you are contributing Post-tax money, or money you already paid taxes on. When you go to take the money out in retirement, its tax free! And everything you do in those accounts is tax free! My personal recommendation would be to go with a Roth account, especially if you are young. We all know to "Give to Caesar what is Caesars" (or whatever the f*ck that book says, I never read it), but you want to give Caesar as little as possible so you end up with more money in your pocket.
The best thing you can do for your future is invest in your retirement. You don't want to be working at 70 just to make ends meet. Future you will thank you.
**9. Start Investing! (Personal Accounts) **
Personal Investing! This is investing with (almost) no restrictions! When you invest into non-retirement accounts, you will be able to access this money whenever you want and do whatever you want with it. Almost. Don't buy drugs. Unless you're into that… When I'm talking about investing in this section, I'm talking about stock market investing. The best way to grow your wealth long term is by investing your money. When you invest, your money starts making you money. So even though you work the same amount, and get paid the same amount, by investing your money you are making more money because your money starts working for you. In general, you should be investing for the long term. This is for a couple of reasons - 1. you're more likely to make money over the long term than the short term, and 2. you'll pay less taxes on what you earn in the long term than the short term. Long term would be anything more than a year. Sure, you can go on to WallStreetBets and see people making a killing by day trading, but you can find far more people losing their asses day trading. I’m going to focus on long term strategies.
When you invest, there are 2 main strategies - Growth, or Income. Growth investing is if you want your money to grow at a good rate over time. Your $100 today will be worth $150 tomorrow (Not really that quick, but you get the point). The stock price itself will go up, so when you sell it in the future it will be worth more. Good long-term growth stocks would be Apple, Amazon, Coca Cola, and other large established companies. I would say Tesla, but who knows what the f*ck is going on with Tesla stock. One tweet from Elon can wipe out your investment or double your money. Income investing is if you are trying to get a second source of income. This is through stocks that pay dividends - once every 3 months they will pay their shareholders a piece of the profit they have made. This is straight up cash deposited into your investment account just for owning certain stocks. You can either reinvest this money to grow your investments, or you can deposit it into your bank account and use it. If you're young, the best thing to do is focus on growth and reinvest any dividends you get. Either strategy you choose, you can be making much larger returns on your money than you would on a bank account or by not investing. Investing is magic. Though they won't admit it, even the Borg has sizeable investment accounts to grow their money. Yes, they rely on the world that they condemn so much. As those CSA cases get more expensive, they need more money with which to pay them. The Mormon church has over $100 billion invested, one of the largest investment funds in the world. Investing is the smart thing to do with your money.
So while the people living "the best life ever" are dreaming about where they want to travel in paradise, you can use your growth or dividends to actually go there. The more you cut your expenses, the more you can afford to invest. The more you invest, the more money you will make in the long term. If you invest enough, you can even generate a completely independent source of income from your job which will go a long way in granting you financial freedom. My goal is to invest at least 50% of my income, but currently I'm at 20%. Try to invest as much as you can. Future you will thank you.
The way you choose to invest will fully depend on your comfort level with investing and your investing budget. Yes, you should have an investing budget.
Let’s say your comfort level is zero and/or your budget is very small. Then I would recommend Acorns. Acorns is a round up or spare change investing app. You link your credit cards and bank accounts, and every time you spend, it will round up your purchase and invest that. Say you buy a pastry for $1.75, Acorns will pull $0.25 out of your account and invest it, bringing your total to $2. You can choose from conservative through aggressive portfolios. If you are young, I would recommend you lean more towards aggressive investing. There is more risk involved, but you can also make much more money than a conservative portfolio. If you are young, you can afford some down days in the market. The one issue I have with acorns is that they charge a $1 a month fee, though this is very low.
If you are more comfortable with investing, have a larger budget, but still want a hands-off approach, then I would recommend M1 Finance. This is a portfolio-based investment platform where you pick what stocks you want to invest in, pick how much you want to invest in each based on percentages, and M1 will handle the rest. They have a minimum investment of $100 to open your account, then only $10 each time you invest every time after. For long term growth, I would recommend doing a portfolio with 50% allocation of SPY (S&P 500 Index tracking fund, tracks the largest 500 stocks on the US Stock market), and 50% other stocks you like. Follow the Warren Buffet investment method. Like Coca Cola? Invest in Coca Cola. Like Target? Invest in Target. If you like something, chances are that other people like them too and the stock will keep growing. Every time you add money to your account, M1 will automatically invest it in the allocation you chose. If you chose 50% SPY, 25% Coca Cola, and 25% Target, when you add $10 M1 will buy $5 worth of SPY stock, $2.5 worth of Coca Cola stock, and $2.5 worth of Target stock. This is a great option if you want easy investing, and its completely free.
Now if you're more advanced and comfortable fully running and managing your portfolio, then I would recommend Robinhood. With Robinhood, there are no minimums, and you can buy fractional shares. But you are fully in control of exactly where your money goes when you invest it. You want to buy 10 shares of Coca Cola? Then you click on KO, click buy, type in 10 shares, and boom, you own 10 shares. Robinhood even lets you trade options, but this is effectively just gambling on the stock market and I don't recommend it. Robinhood is also completely free and is a great and easy to use full-service investment platform.
I recommend these because I use all of them myself. I won't include my referral links on this post, but if you want to get some free stuff when you sign up for any of them just PM me which ones you want and I'll send you a referral. With a referral link you can get some free money or free stocks.
Invest your money! It will take you a long way towards your independence from the borg!
**10. Invest in Real Estate! **
Now we're getting really crazy. Though it may not be as crazy as it sounds. I won't go in to too much depth in this since there is so much information.
Real estate is by definition a long-term investment. It is highly illiquid, meaning you can't quickly turn your investment in to cash, but the beauty of real estate is that you can earn a wonderful income off of it. The easiest way to invest in real estate is by investing in REITs, or Real Estate Investment Trusts. These are portfolios managed by companies backed by real estate assets that generate a regular income, usually on a monthly basis. REITs are required by law to pay out 90% of their profits to shareholders. There are publicly traded REITs on the stock market you can invest in (Ticker Symbols - O, BPY, IVR, WPG, PEI, and many more). While the barrier to entry on these is very low (you can buy just one share at a time), and they have higher liquidity, they carry a lot more risk because their price moves with the stock market rather than based on the underlying real estate they own. They do still pay very nice dividends which can supplement your income.
The way that I would recommend investing in real estate would be through Fundrise. They have a minimum investment of $500 to open your account, and $100 minimum investment every time after. Since this is a private REIT, the prices remain stable even if the market is fluctuating like crazy. Personally, my Fundrise investment account is the only one that didn't lose money during the 2020 economic crisis. Plus they pay out very nice dividends, and the real estate assets appreciate nicely. Again, this is a LONG TERM investment. Don't expect to invest today and pull your cash out 6 months from now. Ideally you want to keep this money invested for years. If you want an income, you can set your dividends to deposit into your bank account, or if you want to grow your investment you can set dividends to be reinvested.
Investing in REITs is a great way to get started with real estate investing. Real estate is a "get rich slow" scheme. It may take a very long time for your investments to grow, but they will see very long-term stable growth. If the Borg is nothing else, it is a massive global real estate holding company. They own all the kingdom halls which are essentially big commercial buildings with empty interiors. They have great resale value, and since many of them were built and maintained with free labor, they have appreciated tremendously. So take a book out of the Borgs secret playbook and invest in real estate.
**11. Buy a House! **
This seems like its way out of reach to many people but it's really not. Owning a house is the single biggest indicator of wether a family will accumulate wealth or not. For most homeowning families, their house is their single biggest asset. Real estate has historically always appreciated, so when you go to sell your house or pass it down your house to your children, it will be worth more than when you bought it. Sometimes a lot more. I won't go into a huge amount of detail because again, there is a lot of information.
Once again, real estate is a very long-term asset. So make sure that you are ready to buy a house. Take your time, do your research, and find the right house. Thanks to the magic of leverage by using a mortgage, you only need to put 3% down to buy a house. While this will definitely mean you will have a higher interest rate, it also makes buying a house much more accessible. Say you want to buy a $300k house, the minimum you would have to put down is $9,000! Traditionally you would put down 20% on a house which in this case would be $60k. Always go with a 30 year mortgage, cuz math and numbers; don't do a 15 year mortgage. Yes, it is very daunting that you will be paying for your house for 30 years, but think about it this way - if you're not paying a mortgage, you're going to be paying rent for a place to live. When you pay rent, you are essentially throwing money out the window never to be seen again. When you pay a mortgage, a portion of your monthly payment goes towards equity in your house. You are buying a piece of your house every month, not just throwing money out the window.
When you pay rent, you are paying your landlords mortgage + profit that goes into their pocket. You are the one buying your landlords house for them. When you are paying a mortgage, you are paying interest on your loan + equity in your house (the balance of the loan). You are effectively paying yourself when you pay the balance of the loan because that piece of equity in your house is now yours to keep. You may even find that your mortgage payments are lower than your rent. In my case, I went from renting a 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment to paying a mortgage on a 4 bedroom 2 bath house and my monthly payments went down by over $500!! That's an extra $500 in my pocket every month to do as I please with (like invest it).
Additionally, you can buy more houses and rent them out! Then you become the landlord, and your tenants are the ones buying your house for you. That is the magic of real estate investing. If you want to learn more about mortgages or real estate investing, just watch some Graham Stephan videos on YouTube.
When you're young, buying a house might not be at the front of your mind or in your near-term plans. But you should absolutely plan on buying a house as soon as you have the credit (remember I told you why you need credit?) and the money for it. Buying a nice car might seem like a better use of your thousands or tens of thousands of dollars instead of buying a house. But how much is that car going to be worth in 10 years? Chances are it will have almost no resale value left. It will also be way out of style and may not even run well anymore. But if you put that money down on a house? You will own an appreciating asset (an asset that goes up in value) that you can sell down the road and get your money back.
**Closing Thoughts**
YOU ARE FREE! You have made the biggest step towards having a great life already by leaving the organization. Things may seem very overwhelming right now that you are stepping out from behind the curtain and looking at the real world for the first time. But don't panic! It gets better, I promise you. Me and many thousands of others on exJW can tell you that though stressful, leaving was the best decision we have made in our lives. I hope all this information will help you make some better informed decisions on how to financially prepare yourself to step in to the world. We have all been told that it is too difficult out in the world and that we will never make it, but I'm here to tell you that you can and you will! Focus on yourself, take care of yourself, and enjoy your freedom! :)

2020.07.26 19:46 ederleiria CMV: Joy and awesomeness are diminishing as a function of time

In order to build a structured discussion and target more precise aspects I’d liked to start with providing context/disclaimers and setting assumptions
Disclaimer 1: some of the examples given may be related to my personal taste in music and art in general and also be directly linked with my personal context for being a middle-class, male, born in the 90ies. But I do believe such vision may be extended to people with different backgrounds, different tastes in art and socio-economic situations
Disclaimer 2: after quite a few conversations with friends regarding the topic trying to put this feeling and this particular perception I have in words, I came across this idea of comparing those with physical quantities: joy and awesomeness
Disclaimer 3: I’m not stating in this view that the past is necessarily better in all aspects and if I had the time machine, I’d rather live my life decades ago when there were so many more problems. What we are trying to address here are only the good transcendent experiences to be defined as ‘awesomeness’
Assumption 1: joy here to be defined as a more mundane and frequent feeling of well-being. The lack of anxiety, depression, and sorrow
Assumption 2: when saying awesomeness, I’m referring to extraordinary feelings experienced in very special moments. It could be the delight of listening to a new song of a band and finding deep meaning on it in a way that such song sticks on your head for days and give you a transcendent feeling of connection with yourself and with the artist and art itself. Awesomeness could also relate to the feeling a traveler has when meeting a special location he desired to meet. The feeling of undressing a significant other for the first time. Laughter shared with friends. In summary: those special cinematographical moments when you smile and you are almost able to watch your life happening on some kind of movie screen and you think “this is awesome. I would like to live that”
The view to be changed:
Joy and awesomeness are diminishing as a function of time. I mean this in two fundamental ways
(i) those two “quantities” diminish as one gets older in life
(ii) those two “quantities” are becoming scarcer in the world as time passes (e.g. the amount of awesomeness one could find in life in the 1990’s is larger the amount one can find in 2010s)
addressing topic (i): as you get older and more responsibility is put on you, and, you have less control of your time, you will quickly lack the time and energy to be close enough to the things that bring you joy and pursue experiences that provide you with awesomeness. And the very fact that your close ones are also experiencing the feeling of aging is a factor weighing on your shoulders making it more difficult to find awesomeness in life.
Also, many negative things will come with age: sickness, back pain, loss of loved ones. In that case one may even develop coping mechanisms that may make it even harder to find awesomeness (not allow itself to love a dog, for example)
Addressing item (ii): i get the feeling that many experiences some years ago were fundamentally more magical than today. Disney creators for example made movies 90s kids watched with their families in low-quality screens and created much more remarkable moments than I see my younger cousins born in 2010s having with their parents in 4k gigantic screens.
I have the feeling the art producing, in general, is becoming less magical. This is a non-measurable and not explainable issue about this topic. I can’t know for a fact, but I just know that this transcendent feeling (I tried to describe when defining awesomeness) was experienced much more intensively in Rock In Rio 1985 than it is in the recent editions. This has no rational explanation since knowledge about music theory and music production is much easier to distribute, if the premiss is true there should be a missing factor.
In the same sense, I can’t know for a fact, but I just know that tourists pub-crawling in London in recent years are experiencing a much less magical London. I can't explain why I had this feeling when visiting Rio de Janeiro some years apart, but the magic in the place is vanishing as time goes by. I think magic in the world is vanishing as a function of time. Outstanding awesome people are becoming much rarer, good funny entertainers are abundant but awesome ones like Jim Carry and Will Smith and other names from the 90s are almost extinct
Places like thematic restaurants, Family Entertainments Centers (FEC), square parks, ski resorts which use to carry magic and awesomeness are either dying or becoming less magical. There are some particular spots that are dense in awesomeness and also know for giving such feelings (i do believe this may be one of the reasons those destinations attract so many tourists), and visiting those places with some years in between gives that impression.
The awesomeness of "upgrading / innovation" is also becoming less awesome. Since joy is many times perceived as the delta between current and past, the magnitude of those deltas is diminishing. In the nineties and early 2000s we experienced very exciting novelties arising: phones with cameras, more affordable flights, phones with internet connection. And now pretty much all experiences have reached a 'final' stage. Changes in technology don't provide the sense of upgrading life's potential anymore since the deltas we are seeing have low magnitude.
Many experiences once different from one another and with a particular level of magic are now too similar and less awesome. for example:
- ordering a pizza in 90s: family agreeing upon a flavor and then a phone call (involving some level of human connection) to a local pizza restaurant - ordering a pizza now: individually choosing in an iPhone app, looking to a screen and no human connection
- movies with family in 90s: driving to blockbuster asking a person for suggestions and watching all together in a low-quality screen.
- movies with family now: choosing through a variety of streaming apps, with previous access to teasers and reviews selected by an algorithm, with lower attention
- shopping for groceries in the 90s: inconvenience of driving to the supermarket, but often involving at least a minor level of human connection. picking the groceries and then driving home. The small journey to the supermarket gives the sense of movement, of true concrete experiences, of life.
- shopping for groceries now: also through an iPhone app. No human connection, not leaving the room
Although the new way of doing things minimizes inconvenience it is making all experiences in life way too similar. Giving the sensation we are living through iPhone lenses
Caring this view gives me a sad perception that the best is not yet to come. The best is in the past and from now on I’ll be lucky to have one single moment of awesomeness every other year. It used to be very different in the past and this is truly depressing

2020.07.24 09:17 BackgroundLychee My Perfect Working Setup

My Perfect Working Setup

https://preview.redd.it/8kt552nharc51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8249544c5ce45568eaa41066b528472547ac7bb
Recently upgraded my home/on the go working setup and thought I'd share. It works really well for me and I think many others would benefit from a similar setup too!

Context: I work in tech and (outside the pandemic) travel internationally around twice a month (mainly around Europe but with some trips to the Middle East and US). I needed a setup that would allow me to maximise a small desk space at home and be portable.
The Setup
  • 2020 iPad Pro 256GB
  • Smart Keyboard Folio
  • Apple Pencil 2
  • Logitech M270 Triatholon
  • 2019 13" MBP
  • Magic Keyboard 2
  • Samsung 27" C27F591 Monitor
  • Beats Powerbeats Pro
  • Not pictured;
    • iPhone X 256GB
    • Tenda Wifi extender (we have 6 around the house)
    • Over-ear Bose wireless headphones (although I tend to revert to the PBPs as they're so good at quick switching between devices and audio is good enough)
HOW I USE IT: At Home
The photo is my WFH desk setup. It's a little cramped, but the MBP sits under the monitor stand which has a spare shelf for me to store the MK when I'm done with work. MBP powered and connected by a Targus USB-C powered dock off to the left of the monitor stand which allows a single USB-C connection for my MBP. Easy swapping to the iPP as well (although sadly it doesn't allow me to utilise the 27" monitor - I bought the iPP after monitor and hub and wasn't going to buy another hub. The 12.9 iPP screen is more than big enough).
Day to day I have the MBP running emails and presentations, with my iPP being used with sidecar to extend the screen or run a mind-mapping app I use a ton for getting thoughts down. My Portal deals with all video calls throughout the day and is hardwired for a stable connection. When not in a VC it's playing Spotify.
The killer upgrade was the M270 mouse due to it's multi-device connectivity and quick switching. If I want to quickly switch over to the iPP and work there I simply hit one button. I could also sync the MK to the iPP if I was really lazy, but there's no quick device switching that I'm aware of (perhaps I could create an iOS shortcut triggered by a mouse button? anyone with experience doing that?) so I just switch to the smart keyboard folio when needed. Personally LOVE the typing experience.
My phone charges on the wireless pad next to my monitor and I've got a lightning cable under the desk for headphones/other iOS devices when needed.
HOW I USE IT: On the Go
I've been able to just take the iPP with me on previous trips, along with the mouse it's all I need to get going. I've got a bag with a few dongles in (USB-C to ethernet, HDMI adapter for watching media in hotel rooms/presenting etc) and have a Netgear Nighthawk for network connectivity.
Work wise my company has quite a few enterprise apps that I spend most of my time in, and all play nicely with the iPP keyboard folio. The ability to easily switch between iOS devices with the Beats has also been appreciated as I move between phone and iPP when in airports taking calls etc.
The keyboard folio and mouse combo came in at around £150/$190 (lightly used folio, brand new mouse) and doesn't add much bulk to the iPP. It all pops in a backpack super easily and gives me far better battery than my MBP. I still miss the ability to multi-task like crazy on the MBP, but TBH the need to focus means I do better quality work on the iPP I find. Mapping iOS buttons to the mouse have really helped my flow as well.
POTENTIAL UPGRADES
  • I'd like to get a 240Hz screen to utilise the gaming laptop I also have (MSI GS65 Stealth) and connect my Oculus Quest. Size is fine, but a crisper resolution and refresh rate would be appreciated. Any 4K monitor recommendations?
  • A trackpad case that isn't as heavy as the iPP MK would be a great move, but unless Logitech bring out a 12.9 version of their recent trackpad keyboard combo this setup will do me fine.
  • My phone's available for upgrade through work next month, so i'll sit and wait for the 2020 iPhone refresh and move to that

2020.07.24 08:53 OrionDirectorate [ORION ARCHIVE + Personal Notes] : I Was, Quite Literally, The Creator of That World - Everything Was Under My Control

Hi all,
I'd like to begin reposting my old, archived posts from roughly a year and half ago for both those who originally missed it and those who'd like to read it again. I thought it a bit peculiar to repost an old post of mine without adding anything new, so for each of these archived recalls, I'll add notes that I recall from the time I wrote them. My personal notes will all be noted with the following: "\personal note:*" These may range from concepts that have evolved with my use of The Law or my realization of The Promise, a quick anecdote that I left out when I originally wrote this, or something entirely new that I experienced since writing these posts.

To everyone who has left a question on my recent post or sent me a private message, I will respond! I am currently going through literally hundreds of private messages, chats, and comments and trying to respond to all with the same level of quality - so it may take me a while to get to you! Please be patient but you can send a quick follow up if I haven't responded in a bit to ensure I haven't missed you. Much love to all who have sent kind words and asked interesting questions!

In preparation of the new post I am writing regarding The Worlds, it would only make sense to post my first experience with traveling to another World. This experience was quite fun and happened during my first year in college. Since this, I have traveled The Worlds a multitude of times (especially since the passing of my beloved) and have spent upwards of months within The Worlds. That alone may seem impossible, but believe me, it is just as much real as The World you exist in now. Now let us recall.

[BEGIN RECALL]
Hey all,This is another long post, but I’m sure many of you will like it because I tell the story of how I literally INSTANTLY manifested my reality.
Some of you may have known my desire to reach the ability Neville had of “entering into a world just like this” among his many other mystical experiences.
Last night I told myself to enter into another world by proclaiming to myself: “You will enter a world that is entirely under your control, and you will stay there until you desire to leave”.
Mind you, for the past two weeks or so, I have been trying this but have yet to be successful.
Last night was the first success I had when attempting this and may I tell you, it was literally “out of this world”!
Now, I’ve experienced both astral projection and lucid dreaming. Both were incredibly different from this experience.
If you’ve ever experienced astral projecting, you know that everything is a bit disconnected as in people not being “alive.”
Not to mention knowing that you’re astral projecting. The same goes for lucid dreaming. You know you’re dreaming, and you’re also easily awoken.
This experience was unlike either of them, but more importantly, my experience was exactly as Neville explained his experience.
It’ll seem completely crazy, and in a sense, it is.
As a preface, this was all in ONE night of “earth time”, last night, the 28th of March.
While in this other world, I had experienced it for 3 DAYS, YES!
Three freaking days!
Also as another preface, I have never done any form of “drugs” (even marijuana) nor have I ever had alcohol, so this wasn’t some intense trip. \personal note: I still have never used drugs to initiate any of my experiences so I cannot comment on their effectiveness nor possible inhibitions. I do however, believe that we are able to affect change in our body and create the same feelings of euphoria or joy that people typically use recreational drugs to achieve.*
I had been in this world for 3 ACTUAL DAYS, such as I fell asleep in that world and promptly woke up in that same world and it was morning!
Now, this wasn’t like a “Wow I am here for 3 days” but instead; I was conscious that ENTIRE time I was in this new world for the full three days (obviously minus the sleeping).
The way I entered this world was strange, after falling asleep telling myself that I will enter this new world, I woke up normally.
Like the past 2 or so weeks, (exactly, I think I started trying this out on the 15th of this month) I woke up normally and went about my day.
Not until I thought about breakfast did I notice I was in this new world.... that’s how real this was.
Upon leaving my room, I went to the kitchen, only to see a platter of fruit and my favorite Chicago Raw acai bowl on the counter... huh?
Walked back into my room to hug my boyfriend for getting breakfast for me (he had done this before, so I wasn’t completely surprised that breakfast had already been prepared).
He was still groggy, so I kissed him and thanked him for breakfast... “Huh? babe what do you mean?”I replied: “The fruit and acai bowl, you didn’t get that?”
He looked at me like I was crazy and said: “Wasn’t me. You just woke me up.” Right then I knew I had done it.
Now I won’t write the entire account of my 3 days in this world, but the entire time everything was so completely real.
Even the people I knew were completely oblivious to the fact the I was dropped off in a Rolls Royce by my new driver.
Now I didn’t go buck wild with creating things since I was a little afraid I would wake up and notice that it was all a dream.
It wasn’t so much me creating things out of thin air, but more me going along my regular day and then decide to leave class in a Bentley until my third day.
I decided to travel to Shanghai.
My father regularly goes there for business, but I have yet to tag along.
Guys, I don’t know how to explain this in any other way than Neville explained it.
People were going along in their regular lives, like each individual person on this Earth! \personal note: I still don't fully comprehend the reality of this. To the best of my knowledge, every being within The Worlds is a conscious being, yet during my travels through The Worlds, I have gained a new level of control over others (though, not to the same degree within my First World) so I still am confused on the reality of consciousness and how The Worlds come into play regarding the conscious decisions and lives individuals lead.*
The city was beautiful.
Now, if things weren’t crazy already, they were about to be.
I had never looked at pictures of Shanghai before this, but somehow my mind entirely filled up the city with seemingly accurate detail.
Now, if you astral project or lucid dream, you notice that your mind makes up the locations based off of memory or preconceived ideas.
But just before I wrote this post, I looked at pictures on google and I am not lying when I say this... it was 1:1.
Now here’s the crazier part:
I was in this building that had like pentagonal shaped windows looking down at the city.As I researched more, I was witnessing in full detail AND ACCURACY the Shanghai World Financial Center Observation Deck! \personal note: I've been to Shanghai twice since I experienced this!*
I am still COMPLETELY blown away as I write this!!!
Isn’t this the most peculiar thing?
I finally left Shanghai on Saturday, my final day in this new world.
In total, I did this for 3 days and 2 nights and finally decided to go back to “earth”.
So, I sat down on a park bench in Shanghai, closed my eyes, and imagined myself back into my bed. \personal note: The only reason I knew to do this is because Neville talked about imagining himself in his bed to leave The World he was in when experiencing the same phenomenon.*
Next thing I know, I wake up at 4:00 in the morning TODAY next to my boyfriend!I woke him up and told him to remind me in the morning that “it wasn’t just a dream”.
Being the good boyfriend that he is, he reluctantly opened the note app on his iPhone and wrote it down.
I kissed him and told him to get some rest (and promise I make it up to him tomorrow lol sorry, naughty, I know).
Additionally, I opened my dream journal and also wrote down “It was not just a dream” and headed off to sleep.
Now here I am, 5 hours later typing this up still completely dumbstruck.
It hadn’t even been a full 7 hours in “earth time” when I had just lived 3 full days in this brand-new world that I had control over. \personal note: I have now spent upwards of a few months within The Worlds and returned to my First World with little to no difference in time. There have been a few times where I slept an entire 24 hours and I can't account for that day, but nothing more than that.*
Now, unlike Neville, I was unable to stop time or control others, BUT I was able to close my eyes and “see” a car or what have you and when I opened my eyes, it be right there, as a physical reality.
I have just completely shattered my idea of the world as if Neville hadn’t already done that with the technique I have been using these past few months.I literally don’t even know what to say, how to interpret this, or if I should ever try it again (heaven forbid I get stuck in a world like that and leave my boyfriend and family behind in this one!) \personal note: I have never been stuck within another World. I have, however, had extreme emotional "breaks" within a World that have been hard to recover from.*
If anyone has had any similar experience to this or any ideas on what the frick this means please tell me!
I can’t even begin to comprehend what this means about this world. Are we just puppets for someone else in the world we are in right now?
Are we all currently in a matrix type world and have the ability to leave this “main” world and enter our own that we control? \personal note: The answer is yes. The World you are currently conscious in is your First World, is OUR First World, The Worlds within Our World contain infinite realities. There are Worlds above ours, but those are for higher purposes, mainly pertaining to The Promise.*
My mind is operating at a trillion miles a second and I have my stats class at 10:00! Good Lord! Trying to crunch averaging algorithms after I just experienced this?Yeah right!
I honestly don’t even know what to think anymore lol

[ORION]

\personal note: Please let me know what you think of these Archived Recalls! I think it would be good to let those who are new read my past experiences and allow those who have read this another chance to. If the majority of people don't like them, I'll only post new content. Like I said, I didn't want to just post my old writings so I thought adding personal notes would add something new instead of just filling up this subreddit with unnecessary posts. Let me know what you think, please! Much love!*

2020.07.11 19:29 iidxtricoro I've been single-handedly juggling the iPad Pro with MK as my Daily Driver for 2 weeks as a manager of a Venture Capital Company. Here are my thoughts as an iPad enthusiast.

Long story short: I survived the two weeks without worry, but I really miss working on laptop.
I'm a recently-promoted investment manager in the largest Indonesian venture capital firm. Every employee in the company has been relying on their computer to work, juggling excel, reading emails, analyzing investment decks, attending zoom calls, and designing slides. I've been relying on 2018 15" MBP for a while until the butterfly keyboard failed me and I have to get it fixed for free, but gotta wait for 2 weeks.
Since I'm no longer responsible for designing decks, and believe that my iPad can do the job for me as a laptop alternative, I decided to pull the trigger and have my MBP serviced.
Now, my work relies on these following suites:
The biggest benefit Apple has ever given me so far is multi-tasking, Desktop Safari and Trackpad support. These three features have probably made the iPad a work powerhouse. Of course, there are still some limitations, but I will share my experience with these apps.
For email, I use the $30/month service from Superhuman, since I have lots of incoming emails and I need to get through it twice as fast to save some time and keep me focused. I know they are focusing their masterpiece on the desktop program, but I'm going to give the iPad version a 75% of the desktop experience. Despite featuring everything that Apple has to offer (except same-app multitasking and drag-and-drop), the iPad is still a bloated iPhone email app, which I wish they could improve these on. These doesn't hinder my experience as I can still do everything I need on the app.
Now, for Google Drive... this is quite tricky, and would be the main reason why I chose to work on laptop instead of the iPad. It got to do with both Apple and Google.
Google's Docs/Slides/Sheets app lack tons of features and hasn't been updated with any of the trackpad and keyboard support. (e.g. I need to click twice to highlight, cannot press Shift to select multiple objects, no cmd+c, cmd+v) It also hogging quite a bit of RAM, which has annoyingly led to app restart every time I interchanged between docs and slides. Despite A12X, the app stutters a little bit. There is no multi-app support, which means to work with two slides, I need to close one and open another. While I can still work, this is really annoying because of how seamless my workflow design used to do in the laptop.
Thankfully I have my analysts who can do things for me so I would instruct them to help me on something if I need it badly (Such as analyzing Excel formulas)
Now you may wonder, there's desktop Safari, right? Now this is on Apple's part, I cannot have the option to open the file in Safari. I may be able to open the web app for Google Drive, but every time I opened a file through a link, it instantly redirects to the app. I do not have an option to open it on Safari. Even so, copy-pasting is a very useful tool to take an element from one document to another, and sometimes I cannot do that, especially on Google Sheets. (So far, only Desktop Chrome can do this. Not even Chromium Edge can.)
Thankfully, Monday doesn't redirect me to their app and I can open both, which is a huge blessing. I am designing some sort of Analyst tasks and require the web app to make it. I use the web for creation and automation, and the app for making entries and mark things as done.
Zoom on iPad is quite limited. First of all, Apple does not allow the camera to be turned on with multitasking or in background (This also applies to MSFT Teams and Google Meet). Screen share is limited to sharing the entire screen, and not to a specific window. Lastly, Zoom's app cannot be split unlike Microsoft and Google counterparts. There is no sound output setup as well, and you can't do split audio and assign custom sound output against other sounds. But you know, at least it works. All links does open to Zoom.
I used Google Calendar for setting up and accepting invites. This is probably the best integration of all as it seem to provide all capabilities that the web does. I have absolutely no complains on this one. I can even set Zoom meeting on the calendar without worry.
Slack is also fine. I also have no complains as I only need one window to read and write things.
Other apps like Crunchbase is accessible on Safari. I can access WhatsApp web from it too.
I got my MBP back with the all-new keyboard. I gotta say, the moment they said my computer is ready to be picked up, I rushed and took it, so I could work with full capacity once again.
I was never a believer of iPad as a laptop replacement yet, only a companion/alternative in case you are traveling or need something compact, and my two week experience has further affirmed that. However, I'm also amazed at how capable the iPad is. I think the tipping point that makes the iPad extremely usable powerhouse is the iPadOS 13, with as I mentioned, desktop safari, same-app multitasking, and trackpad support.
I do have feature requests, which can hopefully be implemented on iPadOS 15... or 14 if there is still time for improvement.
Anyway, thank you for reading my wall of text. I hope you learned something as well. Having said that I'm also open for Q&A. Related questions is preferred, but I will try answering all questions.

2020.07.11 08:01 CookieDog800 Entitled Grandma and her 5 Entitled little s!ts say that i stole their Nintendo Switch and but satanic rituals on it (it was Skyrim: Elder Scrolls 5 Special Edition)

Several things to know before hand
  1. Skyrim Special Edition is indeed available for the Nintendo Switch
  2. My Switch has my EShop account
  3. It has my sister's and mother's profiles on it
  4. It's connected to my phone for notifications, and parental controls
Disclaimer:
This WILL contain some spoilers for Skyrim for those who haven't played it, but for the sons and daughters of Skyrim, please continue.
On my laptop that has small keys on the keyboard, so if there's any misspelled words, that's due to my fat fingers and my tiny ass keyboard, and it's late at night but I can't sleep...
Cast:
Cookie - Me, of course
EGM - Entitled Grandma
NGD - Nice Grandpa who helped me
EGK1,2,3,4,5 - If you can't figure it out, I'm not gonna tell who they are to those who ask in the comment section
AS - Airport Security
*GET ON WITH IT!!!*
Alright, alright, alright...
So this happened on the 5th of July, I was on a plane to go back to my hometown because I was in Florida to visit my Grandparents for summer, but I had a 5 hour layover in Dallas. For those of you who don't know what that is, essentially, it's when you have to wait for the plane you need next to get there from another trip... So yeah, pretty bummed out about that. But, there was a Chili's burger place right down the hall from my next gate so I grabbed a bite to eat and sat down at one of the single person charger stations to mess around on my Switch because it has shit battery life.
So there I was with my Switch playing Skyrim, I was doing the Dragonborn DLC where I had to go and meet with Hermaus Mora, the Deadric Prince of Knowledge and Fate and obtain the second word of Bend Will. Just as I was about to begin the first steps to get to that point (which is traveling through a hellish library filled with monsters and ink pools from Bendy and the Ink Machine, but with a greenish tint, also this library is another dimension, and you have to read books to progress to the next area or 'chapter' as it's called by the game), these five little banshees were jumping all over the seats and yelling, and didn't have masks on either. One of them saw my Switch and immediately came over to play on it. I was wearing my mask and my earbuds to play and these five little shits came ver and started demanding that I let them play games that aren't on the Switch, like hide and seek, movies, books, and they wanted it right then and there. LIKE HELL I WOULD!!! So they kept after me until I gave up and started to put it away, that's when Grandma and Grandpa showed up...
EGM - Why are you wearing a mask?
Cookie - Because there's a global pandemic going around us.
EGM - Oh , that, that's just to get rid of sinners, and gays. The good Lord has sent this down and true believers will be spared from it.
Cookie - Ooooooookaaaaayyyyy. Well I'm off to my next flight.
That's when one of her little shits grabbed my Switch and screamed and threw it at me, she saw the monsters in Apocrypha (the library dimension as I call it), Then their grandma saw it too.
Shit. Hit. The. Fan. At. This. Point. That woman let out an un-holy screech and said at the top of her lungs,
EGM - YOU'RE PERFORMING SATANIC RITUALS ON MY GRANDCHILD'S IPHONE!?!?!?!
At this point, I wonder if entitled twats even know what a Nintendo Switch is...
Then the crowds started to form...
EGM - I will purge you of your sins and destroy this object of Satan!
She reached for my Switch, but I had already put it in my bag, so she grabbed my bag and started a game of tug - of - war with it. Her little shits kept kicking me and scratching me telling me to listen to their all knowing Grandma.
Then security showed up, THANK GOD!!!
They got EGM of of me and her brats too, then this conversation happened.
EGM - SIR! ARREST THIS SINNER AND TAKE HIM TO A PRIEST, HE STOLE MY GRANDKIDS GAME AND STARTED PERFORMING SATANIC RITUALS ON IT!
Cookie - It's Skyrim: Elder Scrolls V: Special Edition: Dragonborn DLC, it's a level I have to do to bea-
EGM - SEE HE'S TALKING ABOUT DEMONS AND SCROLLS OF SIN!!!
NGD then showed up.
NGD - What the hell is going on over here?
EGM - THIS SINNER MUST BE BROU-
NGD - Yeah, yeah I think you got the good Lord to hear you and the whole damn airport too.
EGM just looked shocked at this info. Everyone went quiet too.
NGD - Now then, kid (he referred to me) what's your side?
Cookie - Well sir, I was just playing my game and then her grandkids started acting like they had rabies, and ran over to me and said that they wanted to play it, I said no and then this woman sho-
EGD - THAT'S A LIE, THE GOOD LORD WILL SMITE YOU DOWN FOR LYING TO A TRUE BELIEVER! HE TOOK MY GRANDKIDS IPHONE AND STARTED THAT SATANIC RITUAL ON IT!!!
Cookie - 3 things wrong with what you said, 1. It's a Nintendo Switch, 2. What I do with it is none of your business, and 3, you tried to steal it and there's almost an entire airport full of witnesses. So try another one.
EGM - uhhhh...
Silence was blessed upon us that moment. Her brats were just shocked at this info.
NGD - Well then, let me see what you were doing on that Switch.
I showed him the level, my character, the active quest(s), etc, etc...
And then one of her brats nabbed it out of my hands and ran back to her grandma.
EGK - This is mine, you stole it, you-
She was cut off when I pulled out my phone and remotely shutdown the Switch with my app. She tried to turn it back on then just walked over to a garbage can and threw it in.
Cookie - WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?
EGK - Because it was dead.
Cookie - THAT'S BECAUSE IT TURNED IT OFF WITH MY PHONE YOU LITTLE TWIT!
EDM - DON'T YOU YELL AT MY PRECIOUS GRANDDAUGHTER YOU SINNER!!!
NGD - *whistles REALLY frickin' loud* Enough! He went over and fished my Switch out of the garbage can, it only sustained a small scratch on its protective case. He then pulled out a badge and it was a badge that no Entitled Bitch wants to see, he was a cop!!! Thank God!!!
He arrested her, and she kept screaming about how everyone there was in the cult too, yaddah, yaddah, yaddah, usual entitled, overly religious, things to say...
NGD - Now that's that, I suggest you get to your gate and stay there.
Cookie - Yes sir, thank you sir.
NGD - No problem
So a bit of AMAZING luck, turns out, that EGM and her EGKs were supposed to be on our flight but 'missed' the flight as the attendant put it.
TD:LR The EGM with her 5 brats tried to say I was performing a Satanic on a Switch, and then got arrested by an old cop who saw through their bullshittery...
Stay safe everyone, and have a good one!
Edit: Also, if you wondered what s!ts meant, it was supposed to be sh!ts, but my pc autocorrected it... sorry

2020.07.10 11:51 OracleOphi Yes I am at Work, but not for this place

Ok here is a LONG ONE that is a combination of 4 Stories all interconnecting on the same day.
A Little backdrop and understanding, I am a Self-Employed Entrepreneur. Most of my work consists of 3 primary jobs. First and foremost, is I search the internet and other information databases or “sources” (like public city records or a library or whatever) for all types of topics or information my clients themselves have failed to acquire on their own merits.
Second, is that I am a Legally Ordained Minister registered with my State.
And Third, I work with things most people consider “religiously” or “Socially” taboo, spooky or just flat out weird. In this respect I am very gifted at what I do.
For those last two, I travel quite a lot to meet my Clientele or Customers. I generally take the bus everywhere or an UbeLyft when I am in a hurry.
I am not often paid for my work, but am practically working nearly 120hrs a week.
I am a Male, not too tall, quite chubby, I normally have Long Hair, also always wearing a Purple Shirt, a pair of Blue Jeans, a Backpack of some kind and a ton of weird “Belt Pouches” containing my wallets, my iPhone and other BUSINESS “electronic” Necessities for POS stuff. This is important later!!!!!
Story/Incident (A) Cast Me is me, Kind Ass Bus Driver is BD, Rude Old Homeless Woman is Row, Security guy is SG, and Random Onlooker is Ron, for short
Ok as stated I take the Bus often to meet the majority of my Clients, its 2018, today was a reasonable September day, School just started the week prior, I decided to wear my usual set of STUFF, Tied up my long hair into a Ponytail and recently acquired a brand new Backpack that is MASSIVE in size, and after being packed with Goddesses knows what, it is now roughly 50lbs in weight and on my back while waiting at the bus stop for the morning ride.
I get on, sit closest to the front as the seats are comfiest for chubby folk and it had a spot nearby to rest my Massive Backpack.
As I am sitting down, I take out my phone and my POS equipment to activate the Square “TRAVEL” setting for any new potential clients in my vicinity whenever and wherever I end up walking or get dropped off at. I talk to the BD about the usual locals and small BUS related issues (layoffs, cancelled routes, yada yada). He warns me that our particular route has a new USER that is a bit weird even more so than my level of weirdness, we both chuckle at the joke. He bids me to brace myself as her stop is coming up in 10 blocks, we get there, she hops on and sits across from me. She has to be in her late 60’s at best maybe early 80’s at worst. I sit back down at the request of BD for safety reasons (large incoming group of passengers). Ride generally takes 22 mins to show up at the PRIMARY BUS HUB where all the City Buses unload and load up Passengers. We have 15 mins left till we reach said HUB, and here is where things truly begin.
Row: Nice Backpack, can I have it?
Me: No, this is mine, it has important stuff in it.
Row: umm why does it have to be yours, Aren’t riders supposed to get first dibs on forgotten items?
BD chuckles: See, weird one!
Me: “Huh? ohhh, gotcha.” So at this point she is just staring and what seems to me like drooling or salivating. I assume at my backpack.
Row: Hand that thing over, I want to see the goodies the owner left behind.
Me: Lady, this is mine, I am heading to work.
Row: heading to? What do you call sitting there now?
Me: “Umm I don’t work for the Bus company, I work for myself, I need t.... “. she cuts me off
Row: Then why are you wearing a Bus Driver Pass around your neck?
Ron: LAUGHS, he realizes that PASS around my neck is for DISABLED people as he has one too
Ron: Lady, that’s called a Statewide Access Pass, it lets people with “certain problems” ride the bus for cheap.
Row: a What? Nonsense, he clearly works on this Bus.
Me: I honestly don’t. BD, you are an Employee for [local city bus company], help me out here?
BD: Listen ROW, see this Badge I am holding up, THIS is the BUS DRIVER Pass, not that thing [ME] is wearing.
At this point ROW is not happy and finally just sits quietly, but all agitated and “CRUMPLED” (Crazy and Grumpy). She stays like that until we finally arrive at the bus hub. As all the passengers unboard, I wait cause well, BACKPACK is heavy as hell!!! If I make the wrong move wearing that thing among 20 or so people getting off the bus, eventually someone would lose an eye or an arm hahahaha!!!!
Finally I can get off, as I stand up, ROW launches herself at my Backpack and tries to run off with it. Luckily she is tiny and old, she just slumped to the floor and probably pulled an arm out of place by running and grabbing the heavy bag in one fast motion like that. She whined and complained how I shoved her to the ground and what not. Luckily, Bus has cameras all throughout the Bus.
BD: “Hello, dispatch, please get me SG, we have a problem with [ROW] again”
SG shows up, he asks BD what happened, ROW goes and continues her rant about how an Employee for [local city bus company] shouldn’t be allowed first dibs on forgotten items and how an employee of said [local city bus company] assaulted her over such an item.
BD tells SG to pull up the tapes, and to call the POLICE to come get ROW again for being disorderly and trying to rob a fellow bus passenger. ROW just looked at me, at BD, and at SG like she got splashed awake with cold water, and started crying and begging SG to not call the cops on her again. I was told to collect my things, and asked if anything was broken on the bag. “NOPE” I replied and got off the bus. I saw SG escort ROW into the HUB building and waiting for some form of HIGHER AUTHORITY to arrive to handle her. It seems this happens almost every week and almost daily. This time was her last incident and BD explained she will likely be permanently banned from riding any [local city bus company] buses from here on out.
STORY (B) Cast: Me is Me, SG is Security guard, Potential Clients is PCS, and Karen/Entitled Mom is KEM
As I get off the bus, (still with Heavy BP), I got 45 minutes to kill till I catch the next Bus to my new destination to meet the Paying Clientele.
As I previously stated, I have my TRAVEL setting turned on in the Square app on my iPhone. 13 minutes of sitting and checking emails on my phone, in comes PCS
PCS: Are you [Local Entrepreneur]? We got an alert on our {local guide app} that a “Traveling Business” was in our close proximity.
Me: “Yes, of course I am, How may I be of some service to you” HERE WAS MY FATAL MISTAKE!!!!!
KEM: AHEMMN!!! When you’re done helping these PCS, come explain this particular Bus route Schedule!! I can’t understand it!
Me: Umm Miss, I don’t work for [local city bus company], I work for [Local Entrepreneur Shoppe], and these nice people are seeking my services.
KEM: well if I never in my life!!!! How dare you deny me help....!!!
me: umm umm I didn’t deny you help, I only corrected your assum.......
KEM: Don’t sass back to me, where is your Manager, I want to see your BOSS NOW!!!!
Luckily SG was 4ft away and heard this... came over and asked if there was anything he could help with, and before either myself or KEM could speak, the GODS SMILED ON ME!!!
PCS: Hi, sir, we are new and touring this [LOCAL CITY] and we got notified by our {LOCAL GUIDE APP} that a type of Business we are looking to try out was nearby. It’s this gentleman next to us. Then this rude old bat just harassed this guy and demanded he HANDLE her problem regarding some bus route that is so easy to figure out that a FOREIGN TOURIST was able to figure it out in seconds. (Points to themselves).
KEM just looked horrified and confused. She SCOFFED and tried to tell her side, but the PCS told her to shut up and go to [Foreign known Landmark] and take a dive into shark infested waters. This made her just slump and totally deflated... she knew she lost. IT WAS AWESOME!!!! She skulked away and sat down with her screaming kids.
Incident (C) Cast: Me is me, KEM RETURNS!!, Ashamed and Atomically Po’d Husband is Ashusb, BD is Bus Driver, SK is Screaming Kids
So I missed my original planned bus thanks to a sweet {$35 x3} Payday from PCS, and after an additional hour wait, my bus finally arrives and I get on, BD asks for identification (Disability Bus Pass), he knows me from my usual other work (Minister stuff, I help people get married), there’s a special park for getting married out near where I plan to go to meet this Clientele. So he often sees me on this route during Spring and Summer as it’s a common time around here to get hitched lol.
There also happens to be a Super WALLYWORLD near there too, which I Planned to stop by to for some Golden Arches ... yes, some Wally’s still carry the GA’s food space in their stores.
I get to my destination, meet the client and got paid heftily!!! Was a beautiful $850 Job!! Best Pay Yet in a long time. I decided “screw it”, take an Uber to WALLYWORLD, ask the driver to wait 40 mins or less as I planned to go get some groceries and collect lunch from GA, was now in mood for a SUPERVALUE Meal lol, side joke, sorry for that folks. I Ask the driver to pull over to a space in the Parking Lot and brought my Backpack with me just in case he was asked or called away for another ride.
I walk in, head directly for the frozen foods and dairy where my favorite Taco Cheese and Sour Cream is located and the Boxed Taco kits. I grabbed a frozen bag of StirFry veggies and walk 20ft to where the Hamburg is for the Taco Meat. along the way, I continue to grab some other Taco essentials and basics.
As I am leaving the Produce Section (Wanted to check if any late seasonal watermelons were left). These particular watermelons are the sweetest and juiciest due to being last to ripen on the vines during the hottest and most rainiest part of summer as it was coming to a close.
None were left, that’s when I saw KEM, she saw me, turned to run in shame, but SK recognizes me, starts pestering me, and keeps asking me fix “MOMMIES BUS stuff”. I try my best to explain to SK I don’t work for the [local city bus company] and I was here trying to shop for my stuff, SK insists I help their mom and it takes a few mins of me getting irritated to move and adjust/shift my weight cause now the Backpack is hurting my back. Like I was afraid of, I moved wrong and my heavy backpack knocks one of the kids to the ground. Ashusb sees this and is now furious, but even more so as Ashusb was given a FAKE story by KEM, so he confronts me first about the kids. I apologize profusely as I know this was my doing. He relents a little, but now he is Po’d about the earlier story, I explained my best what happened, he looked at KEM, she dips away like a caught puppy peeing on a carpet, now mad at her, not any more at me, and ashamed for KEM’s behavior. He then says if he lets me go about the kid getting hurt can I forget about what KEM did. I agreed, got my KILLER size food from Golden Arches (ate my lunch there), paid for my groceries and luckily still had my Uber waiting for me. I load my groceries into the trunk, got in the car, and he asks if he can just drop me off at the Bus Hub cause a new person is there waiting for him. I say fine. This leads to Incident 4.
Story (D) Cast: me is Me, New RIDE Person is NRP, Uber Driver is Uber Driver, PP is Police Person/officer, you’ll understand soon, Row is back
I get dropped off and helped with unloading my groceries by the Uber Driver, He has all my stuff in his Arms and I have my backpack and 6 bags of groceries too. We put it all against the wall of the hub building and out walks NRP looking for her ride...
NRP: (taps my shoulder politely) Oi, get moving, drop his stuff and lets go, I am late for my appointment with [some important big shot].
Umm wtf!!! Did NRP honestly think I was an Uber driver? Oh well, let’s try to explain.
Me: Listen hear Lady, I am not your Driver, I am a passenger getting dropped off here at [local city bus company]. I am tired, I just finished a well paying job and want to just go home.
NRP: Excuse me, But you are wearing your UBER Thingy (my Bus pass).... You Obviously have to be my Driver.
The Uber driver hears her, clears his throat trying desperately to get her attention and gets in the Drivers seat, NRP does not hear nor sees him, I am still trying to “carefully” put my stuff on the ground without ruining my groceries and backpack. As I bend down a bit, NRP grabs my Ponytail and tries to stop me from going any further.....
NRP: listen here asshole, I said I am late, get your ass in that car and lets go!
I yelped in pain and almost swung my actual chubby weight and backpack weight in anger towards her, but calmness was somehow in my corner reminding me not to make any decisions I will regret later, and out of my corner of my eye I spot ROW in cuffs being escorted to a patrol cruiser by two PP.
NRP has also noticed the two PP and decided she was more important than everyone and called the two PP over to have me arrested for not being “punctual enough” for her. PP looked at her and laughed, NRP told the two PP that men like them and me are what’s wrong with this Nation.... ohhhh PP1and2 did NOT like being called Men... turns out they are Female Cops as well as Feminists with bigger egos than NRP. I just sat there stunned in disbelief at their nonsense conversation. Finally NRP realizes Driver is honking and I am not in the seat!!! She is beat red!!! I laugh!
Then PP 1and2 gets back to ROW only for ROW to “rat me out” about trying to steal her Precious Backpack from her, PP 1and2, are already aware of the facts, but still approaches me; I am scared shitless thinking “damnit, they believe that Nutcase”.... to my surprise, they just needed my official statement on the issue and let me on my way.
I got myself another Uber and made it home in time to make Tacos for 4. my Friends and I ate till we were stuffed and ready to puke!
{Edit: It should be noted that [local city bus company] actually has a very strict policy regarding lost, forgotten or left behind personal items/property. All of it is brought to the Main Office and placed in a “Lost and Found” storage type area where they are inspected and checked for any particular identification (if any). There, all items get tagged with date and place/bus route# in which it was found at, they stay stored away until someone calls in to ask and give a specific description of a random unknown identifying mark or such, and have proved beyond doubt that lost item is definitely theirs. After a year or so, all seemingly “abandoned” items eventually get placed on Auction block to raise funding to help pay for any type of necessities and bills.}
{{Ok so EDIT 2: People private messaged me about what is in the new Backpack. Well since I travel a lot on my own using mainly public Transit, I sometimes end up too far from home when visiting or meeting a Client/Customer and will need to stay overnight someplace like a Motel or whatever cause either Uber is no longer available in that area or I managed to miss the last Bus for that area too. I filled this New Backpack with essential items for keeping “hygienic” (fresh change of clothing, like undergarments/socks and pants/shirt; And showering/bathing kit w/ washcloth, a Large Towel, toiletries and toilet tissue). I also have stored in the Pack Medical First-aid supplies, my medications, Food “equipment” (Cutlery, plates, collapsable cup, hand-wipes), additionally I have a few Portable Battery Charge paks for keeping my iPhone and other essential Devices topped up. I also have my Business Essentials (including necessary Identification Paperwork and any other types of paperwork) and anything else considered important for being stuck away from home for a day or two.}}

2020.07.09 22:14 La_Mer_et_La_Neige My experience - Switching from Verizon to Spectrum Mobile - 95% positive!!! (Living in major metro/city area).

TL:DR: Even though I hated them, I was really hesitant to leave Verizon. Below are all points that were extremely important to me when deliberating to switch carriers, and now feel the internet / negative reviews completely misrepresented Spectrum Mobile or blatantly falsified information on the plans, fees, billing, porting process, etc etc.

Hi- (29f) wanted to share my experience in detail to help others make a decision to switch, because it seems like there is a lot of misinformation on these forums. I wish I knew how positive the experience would be sooner to have made the change months ago, so I hope this post helps someone else.
I needed to switch to lower my costs due to a recent life events. I save $45+ a month for the same plan (including taxes, phone insurance, etc etc). The taxes and fees really add up with verizon and other carriers.
I honestly hated Verizon - the website sucks and the links barely work, customer service sucks, getting a hold of anyone on the phone was TERRIBLE. Google cloud or icloud replaces verizon cloud anyway. Verizon cloud also simply sucked (and is a terrible horrible place to put any private information).
I was only staying with Verizon for their great coverage as I travel a lot throughout the states. AT&T and T-Mobile weren't much cheaper TBH, and also had terrible websites, bureaucratic customer service, and worse coverage. (I called and spoke to all of them before switching, and it was terrible). So considering I had spectrum internet and was eligible for the discounted service, this seemed like a no brainer to stay on Verizon LTE network but switch to a mvno.

Here were the pros:
  1. Super cheap, and easy to switch mid month between "by the gig" and "unlimited" if you think you go over 3gigs.
  2. REALLY NO HIDDEN FEES.
  3. Was SO EASY to switch carriers and port my number. After I got the sim from Spectrum, took less than 10 minutes to cancel Verizon and port my number over. Verizon gave me zero issues, and no hidden cancellation fees on their end. Just make the switch a few days before the end of your monthly contract to avoid double paying for two services.
  4. BYOD fully paid off phone was super easy at Spectrum, not even a little hassle. My phone was fully paid off, so not sure what would happen / process if it isn't and you owe money to your current carrier.
  5. Phone activation was SEAMLESS and done all online: They just mailed me a sim, took 3 days to receive, and I popped it in and followed the VERY EASY online setup with zero need to speak to a representative. Service worked immediately.
  6. Spectrum website and apps are AMAZING. Nice to have my internet and phone together
  7. Spectrum sends me MANY texts updating me on my data usage (since I am right now paying by gig). There are zero surprises.
  8. Pricing policy is super straightforward. If you pay by gig- it is not prorated. So $14 for first gig, anything between 1.01 gig to 1.99 gig is $28, and so on. So once you hit 3.0 gig it may make sense to switch to unlimited for $45 to be safe.
  9. Month to month contract. Can cancel at anytime (if you do not owe money).

Here is the one big con (sort of):
  1. Data Speeds: Data speeds are slower than using Verizon directly. Just is a fact, and I noticed it immediately. But it is not debilitating at all!! Calls work great though. The slower speeds doesn't bother me because Verizon throttled me so much randomly quite often, so Verizon wasn't worth even close to the $100+ phone bill. I also don't really stream videos while using data, and only use my phone on the go for basic web browsing and map navigation, so Spectrum still works great for this.

Here are things to consider & my solutions that are still more affordable than Verizon:
Phone Insurance: If you bring your own device that was insured from your previous carrier, your phone insurance with that carrier drops and Spectrum will not provide you with new coverage (unless you buy a new phone with them directly).
International Data roaming:
If you have Google-Fi and T-Mobile, the carriers let you use their service (same plan) for no extra charge. However, I still read super mixed reviews on how well their data works abroad, and hear it gets throttled VERY quickly. Google-fi and T-mobile plans, with taxes and fees, are nearly as expensive as a domestic Verizon plan . So using international sim, local sim, in the form of a sim swap, dual or e-sim option still drastically cuts down your annual costs when using Spectrum compared to any of the other 4 major carriers.

2020.07.06 18:52 2015Eh8 Dealing with iTunes files

Hello! I did a little searching but could not seem to find the answer to this so I apologize if I’m replicating.
I use iTunes quite a bit for getting tracks as well as Beatport. With iTunes specifically I seem to run into the issue where I will use either iPhone or a MacBook to purchase a song. Note that this is not adding it on Apple Music. It’s purchasing it via iTunes Store. This is not always on the system I use with Serato.
I notice that often these files seem to be downloaded to the Music on my DJing laptop which is problematic since Serato won’t recognize Apple Music Files. I end up having to delete these one by one and re download them on my DJ laptop specifically to get them to be in the ITunes music folder.
I assume that I wouldn’t have this issue if I only bought tracks off the store on the DJIng laptop specifically but I’d prefer to not be limited to this if there is a way around it. I travel constantly for work and when I hear a track you want to use in a set I prefer to get it while it’s on my mind.
So, is there a way to change the preferences in iTunes of where it places songs bought on another in the iTunes app that I’m missing?
Or
Is there a plug in or option to get Serato to recognize a song in music that is purchased vs one just used by the service?
Thanks in advance! Your assistance is muchly appreciated!

2020.07.02 23:26 yarp1000 An Open Letter to Samsung: there are people beyond enthusiasts who want Samsung DeX to work, and for good reason. And we’d be willing to pay for it if it did.

These days I have quite a bit of time on my hands so I thought I’d talk about device convergence, and get some feedback from all of you out in the Reddit etherwebs. I want to talk about Samsung Dex and what it (and the idea of convergent devices) needs to succeed.
TLDR: there are people beyond enthusiasts that want Samsung DeX to work, and for good reason. And we’d be willing to pay for it if it did.
I've been on the search for single-device computing for several years now, ever since the promise of Windows Continuum demonstrated what was possible. Now, several years on, it’s easy to see how a few things are holding the entire concept back, but we are closer than ever to realizing this goal of one device for all of our computing needs. Apple is rapidly moving in this direction but I don’t see it as the right solution (at least not yet), and I think their vision of convergent devices by dropping Intel is a long way from what DeX could be.
First, a couple of notes about why I’ve been on this search. My career started 20 years ago as a software engineer, and to this day I’ve been interested in all things tech. The idea of convergence of all personal and business computing needs onto one device has always interested me. Over the years I’ve went on to be the CEO of a few companies and now spend my time in a completely unrelated sector where the idea of “one-device-everywhere” for thousands of travelling employees has taken on a whole new meaning – having offices full of dumb monitors and devices that a large, mobile staff can use at their convenience - vastly reduced costs with more convenience, productivity, and security at significantly reduced cost and risk.
These days I don’t run companies anymore (as you can tell from the length of this post!), but I do sit on a few boards where I see all the same challenges resurfacing. Multiple computers for every FTE, tons of storage with duplicated files with syncing issues and security holes everywhere. BYOD is standard now, but the lack of standardization among platforms has made file management a total (costly) nightmare. My assistant travels with three devices – her personal mac, a company windows machine, and an iPhone. And no matter how much she tries, nothing is ever really synced. But I travel (or used to, before COVID-19) with one device – a phone (a Samsung Note 10+). I log into any monitor in any office, call up my Windows desktop (or increasingly just use my DeX UI), unplug and leave when I’m done. I’m so close to what I’ve always wanted for a simplified tech workflow: one device that just works everywhere, no matter where I am. I need no other device than my phone, and access to a dummy monitokeyboard/mouse everywhere I go. My secure data is always with me and can be wiped in seconds if I lose it, and all files are stored in the cloud. It’s really quite amazing.
It wasn’t always this way. I once led an organization with offices in many countries around the world and as far from a tech company as you could get. I went all-in on Windows Continuum as a bit of an experiment that quickly grew out of control and it was a total disaster (hindsight is 20/20). It was horrible, but not because of the vision of a single device, and Windows Phone actually worked pretty well for this purpose (really, it did). I almost had a staff revolt (in retrospect, I probably did) but the prospects of the single-device work/life was so close I could almost taste it. But it failed, and so did I in moving the company in this direction.
It failed for four specific reasons. Since I’ve got time, and you’ve apparently got time since you’ve read this far, let’s talk about them. First, the ecosystem just wasn’t there to make it work. This is pretty obvious now, but if you were an Office 365 organization a few years back, 80-90% of your workforce could get what they needed done on Windows Continuum. But not much else. Windows infamously missed the boat on creating an app ecosystem so your phone – which is both a personal and business machine – just didn’t fit the bill. More on this later, but the lack of apps was one of the killers of Microsoft’s vision. Samsung, on the other hand, doesn’t have that problem – it has thousands (millions?) of apps in the Google store, but it needs to do more work on desktop “emulation” – making mobile apps work in the desktop environment. It’s getting there, but need more work.
We can talk about the individual apps in the comments if there’s interest. Second, people couldn’t use workflows they were used to. Windows has their way of doing things, and so does Mac. And they’re really not that different, despite what the commercials tell you. But in an office, office apps rule the workflow for most staff, and for the more technical guys they’re tunneling into services from already capable machines. In recent years mobile workflows in Office 365 or Google Suite have become almost – almost – indistinguishable from their desktop counterparts. And the virtual PC software has gotten so good that when you need more power, you can always spin up a VM and work away. For Samsung Dex, several vendors (including MSFT) have reasonably good tools for virtual PC access, but I feel Samsung and other firms should enable users to do more without having to go into a virtual environment. And, unlike years past, most of these improvements are software issues that can be fixed, not hardware limitations.
Third, apps need to work. File management is the first that comes to mind. It's come a long way but needs an overhaul to be as efficient as Windows or Mac OS. Part of this is because Android sucks at user file management, but all of the functions are there, it’s that the file manager (and every file manager I’ve tried) is just not very good. If Samsung would just spend some time on that File Manager and put it front-and-center, it would be a huge bonus. That's a software problem though...easily remedied but progress has been painfully slow. I really wish Samsung would spend some time on this, it would really take DeX to the next level of usability.
But I think the real issue is connectivity, which is clearly out of Samsung’s hands - the kind of connectivity that makes local storage unnecessary and gives you an instantaneous, seamless experience so it doesn’t matter what application or virtual environment you’re using, or what file is syncing. On a stable 5ghz wifi connection you can do almost anything on DeX - stream Windows desktop from Shadow, collaborate real time on Teams, play Xbox cloud, or do lighter computing on DeX itself. I've even got some music recording underway, which is almost unbelievable. One phone replaces all other devices. I've tested 5G in London and it was seamless (though a bit choppy due to Vodafone’s patchy network) but the promise was there. It’s really quite inspiring.
But today, one of the challenges for Samsung is that they need to replicate the usability of desktop systems rather than just mirroring them, and until 5G becomes ubiquitous that will require investment in DeX. Today it’s definitely usable – almost enjoyable – but still needs polish and bug fixes that should be provided in DeX-specific updates rather than the infrequent OneUI updates we have today.
Far be it from me to give Samsung advice but heck this is Reddit so here goes.
If I were Samsung, I’d do a few simple things:
  1. Make a deal with Microsoft to provide an in-house virtual PC environment. Or a platform/agnostic VM vendor if you feel Apple will come to the table. But the Samsung/MSFT relationship has been getting closer for years, and this is a logical next step. Acquire Shadow PC or a similar vendor (no WVD please) and sell desktop-as-a-service out of the box. We’d buy it.
  2. Spend a few dollars on the DeX UI and workflow. These aren’t hardware limitations anymore, and the functionality is clearly there. You just need to make DeX something people want to use, rather than an enthusiast tool. Start with the File Manager. No joke.
  3. Create a DeX fork in the app ecosystem so it can get updates and innovate faster, rather than tied to the operating system and receive updates only when the OS is updated.
  4. Rather than build an app ecosystem, build a “coalition of the willing” – vendors that want their tools used in on desktop. The windowed mode on DeX Labs is good enough to be a standard feature.
  5. Sell a companion device – sure HP didn’t succeed with their EliteBook but that was really the fault of Windows Mobile, not HP. I’m sure you could snap up the MiraBook or NexDock guys for 10 seconds-worth of Samsung revenue, and it would give people a reason to try your promise of DeX.
  6. Give people a reason to pay £2000 for a phone, and accessorize around it, rather than the phone as an accessory to a desktop or laptop. You might sell 300 million phones a year, but the premium devices sell far, far less. Give us a reason to give you our money, or to buy these for our staff.
  7. Keep making devices people want. This is another reason MSFT failed – people just didn’t want the devices, and getting them to use an office device that was also a personal device was a tough sell if it wasn’t glassy and took great photos for instagram. Samsung is now on par with iPhone (perhaps surpassed it?) and this is the right mix for getting people to want to own one and try new things with it.
So there you go – a long, meandering tirade from a guy passionate about the promise of Dex with far too much time on his hands. I applaud you if you’ve read this far, and I welcome your comments, criticisms, and whatever else Reddit throws at this. But most of all, I hope Samsung continues to invest in DeX and we get the tools we want to travel lighter, run our businesses cheaper and more securely, and get to nerd out every once in a while on the promise of what’s next.

2020.06.30 17:21 A380fan $2 prepaid unlimited texts day plan

I have 2nd iPhone that I use for international travel. Obviously not many options for travel anytime soon, and I need to buy AT&T prepaid SIM to update my WhatsApp, bunch of apps with my new US-based # (I prefer new number to keep it separate from my main US number)
I found out about this $2 plan via google search.
I probably need to use this few times a year for text verification, etc. There is any minimum payment to keep this line active ? Other than $9.98 SIM kit at Walmart, it seems it would only cost $10 or so a year? Am I missing something?

2020.06.26 21:11 clairemct In Defense of the Brydge Pro + Keyboard:

I had had my Brydge Pro keyboard for roughly a year when Apple announced full mouse and trackpad support for iPadOS, as well as the launch of their new Magic Keyboard and trackpad case for the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pros. At this point, my Brydge Pro keyboard had served me well. Despite people’s complaints of the keys being unresponsive and the hinges damaging their iPads, I had experienced no such problems with mine. Then again, I rarely had my iPad attached to the keyboard. Normally, I keep my iPad on a stand above my keyboard like a miniature iMac setup, and only connected the two when I had to travel.
However, the lack of full trackpad support was something I really missed and dearly wanted. I don’t own any Bluetooth mice. I have cerebral palsy and limited fine-motor skills, so mice and I have never really gotten along; they’re too hard for me to manipulate. As far as I could tell, the only stand alone trackpad option available then (and now) is Apple’s Magic Trackpad 2, whose $129 price was too difficult for me to justify. Instead, I used Voice Control to navigate my iPad most of the time, since my iPad was too high up for me to comfortably navigate manually. For the most part, Voice Control worked fine; the only issues were when Voice Control didn’t recognize a button existed, like the ”Keep Watching” tab in the Hulu app, or when it turned off during Zoom and FaceTime calls and wouldn’t turn back on after the call was over. That forced me to go into settings and turn Voice Control off and on again after every video call, which, as you can imagine during the pandemic, was frequently.
I knew I needed a keyboard with an integrated trackpad, the only question was whether I buy Apple’s new Magic Keyboard case, or Brydge’s new Brydge Pro +. After taking a cursory look at reviews and comparison videos online, the answer seemed simple: the Magic Keyboard case was clearly superior. However, I quickly discovered that the Magic Keyboard case only connected via the iPad Pro’s smart connector, meaning I would always have to use it in a laptop-type setup. Since the entire reason I purchased an iPad Pro was to improve my posture by having my screen separate from and above my keyboard at home, while also having the portability of a laptop to take with me, the Magic Keyboard case would defeat this purpose. I briefly considered buying the standalone Magic Trackpad again, but I didn’t want to have to use two different charging cables for my keyboard and trackpad. Plus, it would take up more space on my desk that already has my iPhone and wireless charger, Nintendo Switch, and other miscellaneous items on it in addition to my iPad and keyboard. Fitting a separate trackpad in would require I do some major cleaning and reorganizing, which, quite frankly, I’m too lazy to do.
So, I took another look at the Brydge Pro + reviews. The main issue people had with the trackpad was the lack of support for multitouch gestures and the lagginess of two-finger scrolling. Again, since I have limited fine-motor skills, I couldn’t use any gestures that would require three or more fingers. As for two-finger scrolling, I’d probably only use that in apps that don’t support scrolling with directional keys, so that wasn’t a huge issue for me. (Side note: I’m surprised more third-party apps don’t allow you to scroll with hardware keyboards’ direction keys. Maybe the popularity of the Magic Keyboard will encourage them to add it?) In the end, I decided to bite the bullet and buy the Brydge Pro +. If I really didn’t like it, I could always return it.
Thankfully, I do like it, and the added trackpad makes my iPad easier and more convenient to use than ever. The keyboard is very responsive. Despite using Bluetooth, there’s no discernible lag when typing; I’ve also never had an issue with keystrokes going unrecognized. (However, I do type slower than most people, since I only use my left and right index fingers.) For clicking and dragging, the trackpad works great—which is what I use it for most of the time, anyway. Two-finger scrolling also works, though it isn’t as smooth as with the Magic Keyboard’s trackpad, even with the “Reduce Motion” feature enabled. But it gets the job done, which is all I really need. Since Brydge keyboards all have an added row of function keys, you can tap the keyboard’s “home” button once to return the home screen and twice to open the app switcher, which is an alternative to the Magic Keyboard’s three-fingered gestures that I find easier to use. Plus, you can also control your iPad screen’s brightness, keyboard backlight brightness, bring up the virtual keyboard, and play/pause/fast-forward videos and music easily. Aesthetically speaking, I also prefer the Brydge Pro +’s aluminum build to the Magic Keyboard case’s polyurethane one. People who have used Macs prefer the Magic Keyboard’s scissor-switch keys and trackpad that’s clickable anywhere, but since I’ve never used a Mac and had a Windows laptop with a diving-board mechanism trackpad prior to getting my iPad Pro, Brydge’s keyboard and trackpad work great for me. The experience is comparable to what I had on my laptop.
In fact, the only complaint that I have is that I don’t get anywhere near the maximum three-month battery life that Brydge promises. I had to charge it after only two-and-a-half weeks, which isn’t entirely surprising since my iPad is my main computer; I use it the vast majority of the day, every day. I’m not upset about the battery life so much as I wish Brydge would state under which conditions you could get three months of battery life. Charging the keyboard itself isn’t difficult, especially since it uses the same type of charger the third and fourth generation iPad Pros do. You just have to remember to bring at least one charger with you if you’re leaving the house.
TL;DR: The Brydge Pro + keyboard is a premium, but $100-$120 less expensive alternative to Apple’s Magic Keyboard case if you want a keyboard with an integrated trackpad that can be used separately from your iPad Pro, or if you won’t really use the trackpad gestures supported by the Magic Keyboard’s trackpad. In my opinion, it’s far better than many reviewers make it out to be.
*It’s worth noting that Brydge recently tweeted about a new, similar keyboard to the Brydge Pro + that will be released for the Microsoft Surface in August. Unlike the Brydge Pro +, this keyboard’s “precision trackpad” supports all multitouch gestures including two, three, and four-fingered gestures, as well as pinch-to-zoom. When someone replied saying that this new keyboard is a “kick in the balls” to all Brydge Pro + owners whose trackpads lack the same capabilities, Brydge responded: “[A]ll of our trackpads are actually full multi-touch, it’s just that our Windows firmware unlocks the full functionality of the hardware.” This statement implies something I myself had suspected: Apple was purposefully limiting the capabilities of third-party mice and trackpads to make their own (more expensive) option look the best. I read comments from several people complaining that scrolling with non-Apple Bluetooth mice was choppy and laggy, suggesting to me that the issue was not with Brydge but with Apple. Furthermore, Logitech‘s $150 Combo Touch, whose trackpad was created in conjunction with Apple and supports all multitouch gestures, is only available for the 10.5” iPad Pro, the third gen. iPad Air, and seventh gen. iPad. I think it’s highly unlikely we’ll see a Combo Touch compatible with more recent iPad Pros, as that would put them in direct competition with Apple’s Magic Keyboard case.

2020.06.15 04:23 RedRebelPirate Limitless Fanfic: Miss Pink Pajamas.

A/N: This is a new story I'm working on. As is obvious I could never completely accurately portray any character on NZT, but I'll try, I'll also try and educate you all a little while I'm at it. That way it at least looks a bit more realistic. If I make a mistake though please call me out on it. Or I won't learn.
Chapter 1, Miss Pink Pajamas
In retrospect it was a gamble, a calculated one, but a gamble none the less. Even nowadays, with the new discoveries made every day, how I got there that day and how I knew those things still remains a mystery. But, let you tell me the beginning of my story.
After all I still remember it, as if it was yesterday.
.....
It was April 2020, because of the recent outbreak of a new virus everyone was told to stay at home to avoid the spread of this terrible new virus that could kill even healthy people if they were unlucky. The name of the virus Covid-19 or Corona, would attack mainly the lungs of the person, causing their oxygen levels to sink so lows it could kill them. Many people had already died world wide, though mostly the weakest links of society: The elderly and immunocompromised, and on a side-note; the overworked doctors.
I as both a law abiding citizen and as someone with Asthma, not to mention the some kind of unknown other weak link in my system causing me to sporadically fall ill, decided to say home for the evening, away from possible infection. As I browsed through the new series on Netflix I saw a new title I had not seen before; Limitless. As I clicked on it I saw it was complete with 22 episodes. Nice! I thought.
The guy on the poster looks okay I guess? Not really my type though. Let's read the premise...
In the end I became so engrossed in the show I binge-watched several episodes in one go.
Wow, this Sands guy is kind of a jerk, but he has his sweet spots too I suppose. I mean he cares about his son at least. He also did give Brian a warning. Even as the bad guy he does have a sense of fidelity.
"Alright I'll watch the last few episodes tomorrow." I mumbled to myself as I donned my blue pajamas for the night.
The next day I watched the rest of the show. And just like always I was disappointed when I finished the last episode. But the at least the show had served the purpose of making me rethink everything I knew as my life, all good shows did. While physically Brian hadn't really been my type, I liked how he was able to become a better version of himself. Yet I also saw the appeal of what Senator Morra had said, to leave his old self behind to become someone new, someone he wanted to be.
My life had always been chaotic, going from one place to another, never staying long enough to actually finish anything. It'd been only 3 months ago since I'd finally finished college, Brian wasn't physically really my type I would usually pick as the hunk of the show, but he was more like myself than I would like to admit. I'd had good years too, I'd travelled through Asia and I had a wide variety of knowledge in a multitude of fields. The only problem was that every time everything was going well for me; I would get sick. Sick too the point to be unable to do anything, too often to really specialize in anything in regards to a career. It was frustrating enough to want to cry though. I avoided focussing on that and I kept myself occupied by a lot of hobbies. My most recent one: Learning to play guitar.
Now you might say that it was because of the show, but no. It wasn't I had been learning guitar ever since my boyfriend started to teach me some 2 years ago. Even if we long since broke up since then, I had kept the habit of teaching myself the instrument with the help of some programs and useful apps.
I was deep in thought about the show and I couldn't help but Google the show to see if maybe there was some more content that wasn't on Netflix. And yes there was, a movie of the same name. Awesome!
The movie about some more details about Edward Morra was interesting to say the least. Together with the tv-show it was a nice conclusion to have, even if it had been a prequel. It also showed that he'd had problems of his own because of the drug and that he was a lot kinder and passionate, than I had originally though.
I also kind of felt sorry for him, his girlfriend didn't want to take NZT, though I could understand why she didn't want to. I felt it a little was unfair to the both of them though, he would continue to grow and learn in ways beyond what a normal human could ever hope to understand. He showed it when he talked in Mandarin with that waiter, while she just looked on completely lost. I wouldn't ever want a relation like that...
After the movie I sported a bit of a headache, getting up from the couch I realized just how bad I felt, I got the thermometer; 100,6/38,1) I was running a fever again, I often did lately. I got an aspirin and got changed into my pajamas. Feeling worse by the second I also grabbed a small wet towel to put on my face and got into bed to sleep.
If only I could just take NZT to figure the fuck out what's wrong with me. Or better yet, fix it and get better...
....
I woke up, blinking in the sharp early morning light. I didn't know how or why, but I was standing. I was standing even though I was supposed to be lying in bed. I wasn't tired though, so I assumed I did sleep. Did I sleepwalk? When the world came into focus and the sounds started. The first thing I noticed was the chirping birds and a sign that read: Vote Edward Morra for senator.
The sign was on the side of a big red bus used for tourist tours, there was a picture on the sign with it. He looked familiar. It took a second before I realized it was the guy who was in the tv-show and movie I just watched. "Hehe, very funny brain." I muttered thinking I was just dreaming.
I looked around the very life-like dream I was having. I'd had lucid dreams before, so this was not completely out of the ordinary. As I looked around more I realized where I was within seconds: New York. It wasn't really all that hard to figure out, I was right in front of the Maine Monument after all. Though I'd never been to New York before, the amount of movies and shows I'd seen that played there were staggering to say the least, the tv-show and movie I'd just watched included. On the square there were only a few people here, most with dogs, a sole street artist making a painting and a coffee-stand at the corner.
However I felt like something was off, my lucid dreams had never been this detailed before. Not to mention I was usually not so self-aware that I would realize that I was actually still in my pajamas. I also noticed that, though there were few people there, which was an oddity in itself too, that people were staring at me.
A bit creped out by reflex I wanted to wake myself up. I dug my nails into a bit of skin. Startled I realized it actually hurt but that I was no closer to waking up. I didn't know what kind of story this brain of mine had cooked up this time, but it was time to wake up now. I somehow remembered that in a dream you cannot remember the faces of a random people, so I decided to walk up to someone, just to ask the time. If it was a dream I wouldn't be able to focus on that persons face and would either get a distorted picture or I would wake up. If neither happened... well then that would be weird in it's own way.
I walked over to a lady sitting on a bench with a Pomeranian dog at her side. I guess it must be because even in a dream I couldn't imagine speaking anything but English here, I asked her in English:
"Excuse me... I was hoping you could tell me what time it is."
"Ehm.. Sure, it's 7:30 am"
"Oh, okay thank you, very much." The lady I estimated to be around early thirties answered. She looked kind of posh with expensive clothing and shoes, but her face was kind enough. Everything normal and I still haven't woken up. I was at a loss on what to do now, and I probably looked the part as she continued on.
"Are you okay, why are you in your pajamas?"
"ehehe, ehm... Well... I... I sleep walk." I blurted out. Going with the first thing that came to mind as a logical explanation on why I would be out here looking like this.
"Oh, that must be inconvenient, I hope you're okay? Though I suppose you must live reasonably close by then?"
Not really knowing what to say I merely nodded, as I sat down on the bench besides her. Wondering to myself how I was going to explain this if this was not a dream. I could barely believe it, and I couldn't even explain it to myself, let alone someone else. I mean if this wasn't a dream, how did I get here? I couldn't have crossed continents while sleepwalking the whole time. That gave me an idea, I asked her for the time before, but not the date. Maybe I really did fly over and I'd actually been asleep for several days? Even I thought it was far fetched idea though, especially since I was still in the same pajamas I'd gone to sleep in last night. Not to mention I didn't even have my passport with me, or anything else for that matter. There was even more so, the fact that the borders were closed due to the lock-down thanks to the virus. So the more I thought about it the weirder it became.
Could I really have transferred to the universe of that movie/tv-show I just watched? But I thought that was improbable too and that it could be I was just having a more realistic dream than usual. However I also thought whether it was or wasn't, I should start doing something soon.
Anyway if this was just a dream why not have some fun? Whether it's real or not shouldn't matter much. I mean if I am really here, I might as well try some of this NZT myself to really see what it's like. I didn't know if I would like the smarter version of myself, I mean I'd always been an intellect, more or less. So maybe this would not change me all that much? It was just that this would take it to a whole new level. Oh and the trauma's, I wondered if that would be better? Or actually worse, Brian wasn't really traumatized because of the NZT though, so maybe I would even be able to work through them? Rebecca did.
I hope I'll still at least value human life though, or I won't care about the things I could do this early on in terms of saving a few people. I mean, the poster reads: Vote for senator. That means this is slightly before the start of the tv-show, but after most of the movie. I might even be able to save Rebecca's dad from being killed by Sands if I play my cards right, even Piper's boyfriend too. How to go about it is really the question though. I sat there thinking for a while, when the lady next to me got my attention again.
"Hello? Are you okay? Is there someone I can call for you? You look kind of out of it."
Remembering that I was on my own in a city I only sort of knew, without money, a phone or even normal clothes. I also realized that I might not even have a home in this world. It was quite possible that I didn't even exist in this world or that I had a double version of myself already living here. Well this can actually also be taken as a pro, I might not be able to call anyone I know, but it's not like I cared all that much about my life to begin with, let's just live out this dream for as long as it last and not worry about that.
"Ehm yes sorry, I was just thinking on what to do. I only just moved to the city and to be honest I don't know my way back." I tried to laugh a bit about myself to put her at ease. Lying wasn't that hard after all. "Say could I possibly use your phone for a bit to look up a phone number?" I continued on. I knew calling Mr. Morra was a long shot and that I might not be able to reach him directly but maybe I could get his secretary to either relay a message or get Mr. Sands on the phone.
"Sure," she handed me a IPhone 6 with a golden rimming. "It's the latest model, I only just got it a few days ago."
Latest model, the latest model should be the IPhone 12 Pro Max. Maybe I went back in time too? After all the movie and the show were already several years old?
I started just a bit to long and the phone auto locked itself. Out of habit I pressed the home button to unlock it. I'd had the same phone for years after all though by the time I bought it, it'd been a decently outdated model by 2 years after the release.
Since my fingerprint didn't open the phone it just showed me the time and date: 7:41 am, 24th of September 2015. So I'd not only jumped through space but also through time, It had been early April in 2020 when I'd gone to sleep yesterday. 2015... That's interesting...
"Oops, sorry I was a bit to slow. Could you unlock it again." I asked, trying to not space out too much again.
"Of course" The lady looked on smugly as she realized that the odd one next to her had been staring at her expensive phone.
Hehe, never seen this before have you? Since you can't possibly have this... It doesn't even officially come on sale until tomorrow. Maybe she knows it and she was staring because of that?
When I went to Safari and typed in: Edward Morra Contact, into Google. The search result at the top was for his office, which included a number. About to copy the number, I paused. It said the office didn't open until 8 am.
"Oh I found the number."
"Well that's all good then, go ahead and call."
"Thank you, but I still have to wait a bit the office doesn't open until 8."
"Oh that sucks, but I don't have the time to wait with you, if you want I can give you a pen to write the number down though." She said as she rummaged in her purse. "sorry dear, but I don't have any paper." She said as she handed me the pen and stood up from the bench, the little dog at her side becoming exited to be on the move again.
"That would be more than fine." I said as I took the pen from her and scribbled the number down on my left hand. When I finished I stood up as well returning the pen, I closed the Google tab on her phone and returned it as well.
"Are you going to be okay waiting for a while? If you want you can come home with me first and they can come pick you up from there." She said doubtfully.
"No need to worry it's only another 15 minutes. Again thank you so much for letting me borrow your phone. I hope you have a great day." I said smiling at her. She called to her dog Snippy to get going and I waved another time when she turned around a few feet away.
I sat back down on the bench and if I was honest I was kind of glad to not have to go and call right away. Now I had some time to go over what I was going to say beforehand. Calculate what would be best to say, and not to say. After all you should never show your hand too early.
After I'd run simulations in my head for a while, ran all the possible questions I would likely be asked and came up with reasonable lies. I estimated 20 minutes to have passed. That should make it about 8:04 am or so. Time to get this show, or rather dream on the road.
I walked up to a young man with dark curls, a Beagle walking next to him. He was about to enter the park but he stopped walking when I called out.
"Excuse me, do you reckon I could borrow your phone for a bit? I just sleepwalked all the way here and I want to call someone to come pick me up, do you mind?" I said as I bowed down to pet the little guy jumping up my leg.
"He likes you and no, I don't mind at all." He said smiling back as he handed a Samsung S5 to me after I stood back up. I dialled in the number and paced a bit back and forth while it rang. Despite the pre-re-runs I'd done the past 20 minutes I was still slightly nervous, but exited all the same too.
"Good morning, Edward Morra's office. His secretary Louise speaking" A female voice spoke on the other end of the line.
"Good morning. I'd like to speak to Mr. Morra if he is available." I said as I walked a small distance from the young man who's phone I'd borrowed and started to pace back and forth, subtly putting a bit more distance between us so he couldn't overhear the conversation.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Morra isn't available right now. Can I put through a message, miss?"
"Could you put me through to Mr. Sands then? It is important."
"Mr. Sands is not here right now, but I could have him call you back, miss?"
"Yes, please do. Have him call back to this number quickly, tell him it's urgent please."
"Can I have your name to give to Mr. Sa..." I hung up the phone before she even finished and walked back to the young man smiling.
"Hey, the person I needed to speak to wasn't at his office yet, I asked them to put through a message they should call back in within a few minutes, or else I'll call again. Would you mind if I hold onto your phone just a little more, I'll walk with you until then."
"I don't mind, but are you sure? You're not wearing any shoes." He asked a little worriedly. I just shrugged it off with a small chuckle.
"I'm okay as long as you don't walk to fast."
He slowly nodded in response, but contrary to what I though he would do, he walked back to the same bench as I was sitting on earlier and motioned for me to come sit next to him. Smiling at him I obliged.
"Glad to see chivalry is not dead." I said as I sat down and it made him chuckle as well.
"No worries Miss Pink-Pajamas. Though I'm not in a hurry, I hope they'll call back soon since you must be uncomfortable like this right?" And now it was my turn to chuckle.
"Only a little, I'm just glad it's not very cold at the moment. But, yes. I hope so too."
We sat in silent companionship for a few seconds as I petted the enthusiastic beagle for a bit. I was about to ask its his name when the phone in my hand started buzzing. A bit surprised I jumped up from the bench, again walking a few paces before I finally slided the button to the right to pick up. The first thing I heard was the very familiar and curt voice saying:
"Sands, who am I speaking to?" A cold familiar voice sounded and I couldn't help smiling.
"Good morning Mr. Sands. How nice of you to call back, however I'd actually rather speak to your boss. It's quite the delicate issue after all."
"Mister Morra won't become available unless it's important, state your business or I'll hang up."
"Patience, Mr. Sands. I was getting to that. It's about a certain drug our dear future senator is involved with. A drug by the name of NZT."
"..." It remained silent on the other end of the line for a few seconds, until Sands voice sounded on the other end again:
"Wait a moment."
"Of course, but don't take too long. Oh, and do feel free to arrange a car while I talk to your boss. I want to be picked up at the corner of 59th street at the central park main entrance soon, I'll be waiting on a bench next to the monument. Well then Mr. Sands I expect to be seeing you soon."
"..." The other side of the line remained silent and cut off after a few seconds. I took a moment to re-ascertain that both my nerves and excitement were under control, even going as far to take a few calming breaths for a few minutes. Luckily I didn't have have to wait excessively long as the phone buzzed again and after picking up, another all to familiar voice sounded on the other end of the line.
"This is Edward Morra and can you please tell me who you are?" He said in his usual charming voice, but I could hear the silent chill in it too and it was for that, that I couldn't help but smile.
"Who I am is not so much as important as what I know, am I right future senator? But not to worry to much I don't plan to go running off or blabbing all you big and some dirty secrets to whoever wants to hear about it. I think I'll give you a chance first. I'd like to meet, face-to-face."
"And what kind of secrets do you claim to know, if I may ask? You're asking me to trust you after all, you'll have to trust me too." I could tell he wasn't even all too bothered about this, but the fact that he bothered to to threaten me again made me giddy, I'd hooked him, he might be on NZT, but I knew the show, I knew him.
"Well to name just one thing; I know of your, drug abuse? No, not abuse, prudent use of the substance known as NZT-48." At this point I could barely contain my laughter, so I'm sure some of my giddiness must have leaked in my voice. Especially since his next comment was a lot less frigid then before.
"I agree we meet. What are your suggesting?"
"Well, I've found myself in a bit of a pickle, so I will need get a few things and some time to get ready before meeting you. How about you meet me for drinks tonight in a hotel bar of your choosing, say 9:30 pm? You can send you guy Sands to come chaperone me until then, to show you I am willing to trust you too. I would however appreciate some spending money, but don't worry too much, you can set the limit."
"Okay, then I say we meet at The Langham Hotel at 5th avenue."
"I have no objections. Then I'll leave the arrangements to you."
"You seem awfully calm, do you really have that much confidence that this will all go well?" The 'for you' was only implied but it couldn't be less obvious to me. That he bothered to threaten me again was a sure sign I'd caught his attention and I couldn't help but chuckle. I knew perfectly well Mr. Morra could have me killed quite as easily, and he knew that too. What he didn't know was if I had any safeguards in place and that was what he was being careful about, that would keep me safe, or at least as safe as it could be.
"Yes, because it will be more than worth your while Senator." There was a slight pause... And I realized I'd said Senator instead of future senator. But didn't bother correcting myself.
"Until tonight then miss...?" Again he tried to lure me into telling him my name.
I knew I would have to give him something in the end, but I couldn't bring myself to say my real name. It might sound weird but I felt like if I did say it, it would be the end of the dream. My advantage was that I had nothing and as far as anyone was concerned I simply didn't exist at all. I looked back at the guy who's phone I'd been using for the past 15 minutes and I thought of something that made me smile even more. I caught his eye and made a thumps up to him. Redirecting my focus back to the man on the phone I smirked.
"Miss Pink-Pajamas, I'm sure Mr. Sands will appreciate that." I couldn't help but chuckle before I continued on:
"Well then Edward Morra, it's a date." After that I cut the line not bothering to see if he would respond to that.
Slightly relieved I walked back. I handed the guy with the curls his phone back and profoundly thanked him for his patience. I told him I would be picked up by someone with a car soon and that he needn't worry any more. He insisted on waiting with me for a bit though, and we made small talk for a bit. I found out that his name was Tayi and that he lived close by with his brother. We talked about all kinds of things for a while and by the time he said he had to go, at least another 20 minutes had passed. I waved him goodbye after I promised to come by the park again, since I had disappointed him when I told him I had no phone-number to give at the moment.
After Tayi was out of sight, I sat back down on the same bench again. I closed my eyes for a bit, enjoying both the sun and the breeze and a few more minutes passed that way until I heard someone walk up to me, I opened my eyes expecting to see Jared Sands there, Instead it was the street-artist that had been on the other side of the square. I blinked in surprise, he didn't say anything. He looked down and my gaze followed as showed me what he was carrying in his hands. A canvas with a beautiful painting of the square, the monument and me! In the painting I was looking at the statue with a peaceful grin on my face whilst sitting on the bench in my pink pajamas.

A/N 1: So this is my fist Limitless fanfic, for both the movie and the tv-series there aren't many fics. Even combined there are few, but I do know that there are fans out there somewhere and I hope those people they can enjoy this. Let me know if you think the canon characters are too OOC.
A/N 2: Langham Hotel at 5th avenue really exists. It's a very famous chain around the world. Never been to the one in New York so most of the interior mentioned is made up. They do have a five star restaurant if I'm not mistaken though. But at which floor it is, I don't know. I made that up.
A/N 3: If you liked this don't forget to check out PolaroidBubbleTea's fanfic too that should be posted within a day. I'll link their thread in a comment once it's posted too. I'll be back with chapter 2 within a week.
Don't forget to R&R

2020.05.28 21:08 Mlrife2 Goldman Sachs/Apple Card Phishing Scam

I get a call from GOLDMAN SACHS (caller ID confirms) - Guy identifies himself as from Goldman Sach and the Apple Card team saying (he is on a recorded line, blah blah) they have noticed unusual activity on my credit card. I immediately stopped what I was doing to listen (I work in the credit card industry for Visa). He then proceeds to read through three transactions that all matched with my recent purchases. He then told me that he saw a transaction from Florida and asked if I had traveled there recently or had a spouse there with access to my card. I said no. He then told me that he would place a freeze on my card for 12-24 hours while Apple does their investigation into what is going on. I noticed in the Wallet App that my Apple Card was Locked a few moments after he said this. He then told me that we want to make sure my Apple ID is safe and that he would give me a temporary password to input (which this now makes no sense to me and I don’t know why I said yes, but I 100% trusted him after the amount of information he had). I input the password and then he said I would see an iPhone device from Florida and that I needed to click “Allow” which would let Apple track the device and that they would disable it and make sure my account was safe. Reading this back as I write it I can’t believe I went through with it, but it was believable in the moment.
Fast forward about an hour when I notice a transaction from my PayPal account to a Dan Ran - Thankfully only for $50. I have no idea who this person is and have confirmed I did not authorize it. I’ve already disputed it in PayPal. This is when the alarm bells start ringing in my head. Someone has access to my PayPal. I then play back the phone call from Goldman Sachs in my mind and realize that I got GOT. This is where I freak out and contact Apple Support and tell them the story and see if it matches anything they’ve ever heard. They say no, emphatically. They help me reset my Apple ID password and remove the iPhone 7 from Florida that has access to my Apple ID.
Now I call Goldman Sachs again and tell them what happen and ask if there is any record of someone calling me at 10:30AM Mountain, they say no. I ask them if anyone in their organization locked my account and they say that it is locked but there are no notes and no reasons as to why it is locked. She even said, “that’s weird, we always put a reason in the notes for why the account is locked.”
Now I’m in a mad rush to go through all of my passwords that were stored on my phone (about 150) and change them one by one to make sure the fraudster doesn’t have any active access to any accounts or anything he could use to take money from me. I call my bank and let them know that I’ve been compromised and to put a flag on my account for any out of the ordinary transactions (I don’t use a debit card after working in the credit card industry for so long.. Credit cards have much more of an ability to get your money back than your debit card through a bank) so any transactions on my bank account would stick out like a sore thumb since I only pay my mortgage and car payments from there and my credit cards.
I then go and freeze my credit with the three major bureaus and sign up for life lock for myself and my wife just out of good measure (I can cancel whenever so feels like decent added protection).
This is when I keep replaying things through my head. Here’s the strategy I think the fraudster is trying to pull and where I think Goldman Sachs is involved.
His plan was to give me enough information about my actual Apple Card account through Goldman Sachs, which worked. He verified three legitimate transactions with me over the phone down to the penny. Transactions that I actually made. I can’t think of any way he would have this information if he didn’t either work at Goldman Sachs or know someone that did. He also confirmed the amount I paid toward my balance two days earlier, which was spot on. Not to mention that he called me from the exact same phone number that I’ve spoken to GS on in the past, and the same one I called back to speak to them on yesterday (5 times!). Once he gained my trust and got me to give access to my Apple ID he told me that I would be able to update my password in 12 hours. This is where I think the plan was to give them access to my information and then make it look like things were back to normal 12 hours later. Then they could shave away $50 here and $50 there over time without my noticing. If they do this to enough people and they take small enough amounts of money without getting caught then this is a scam that could pay them for ages.
After adding things up in my head and realizing that some of this information had to have come from GS, I started calling them back. I worked up three different people to the fraud department and pleaded them to escalate and have someone reach out to me. I told them that I work in the credit card industry and that security is the most important thing for a company like this. If it is happening to me, then it is likely happening to others and all fingers point back to information that only GS has. This is a massive security concern for GS and for Apple.
I think GS has either someone that is working there that is abusing their access to information or there is someone on the inside providing information to a fraudster on the outside to leverage real information for this phishing scam. I have to say, it’s pretty well thought out. It had just enough real information that I thought I was talking to a legit person from GS.
If anyone has any idea on how I can better protect myself outside of the steps I have taken above, please let me know in the comments. It feels really weird to know that my identity and livelihood are even remotely on the line.
At this point I am going to continue to hound GS until I can get to someone that can really help me figure out what happened. I feel like I need to protect myself. What if the fraudster pulls something I haven’t thought of yet and puts me in a horrible situation? I need a dialogue with GS to be there so they can be responsible since the information that got this whole phishing scam started came from them.
Additional info: I missed a FaceTime call request from a Florida number at 11:24PM which is 30 mins before the PayPal transaction occurred. I also noticed random Starbucks cards in my Wallet App and a Sam’s Club membership card for Kevin, which disappeared after I removed the iPhone from my Apple ID.

2020.05.21 00:04 TheTimeisNow2Confess I Knowingly Let Myself Get Catfished For the Better Part of 8 Years

(Epic)
I’ve held on to this secret for so long, I felt it was time to tell my story and let it all out. I’ve told partial truths or twisted truths about it to people here and there. But never the full truth until now.
It all started back in 2006/2007 when I was a junior in highschool. For reference, I grew up in Northern California in a somewhat sheltered environment. I went to the same private Catholic school for middle and high school. I never felt pressured to grow up too quickly to fit in, hence I was fairly dorky and unattractive (at least in my mind). Just so you can try to picture me at the time: I had long blond hair, blue eyes, lots of ear piercings, wore eyeliner every-day. Physically I was more built than other girls at that age. I inherited my mom’s chunky thighs, legs, and large butt. Cellulite abound even at that age. Small on top, thick on bottom is how I like to describe myself. I had always been (and still am) a guy’s girl – as in I fit in better with guys than girls and was considered pretty “cool for a chick.”
At that point I was only just starting to grow into myself as a young adult. That was the first year that I had a real boyfriend and started slowly exploring my sexuality, and I smoked pot for the first time at the end of the year but I still had never had any alcohol. Boys at my high school were starting to take interest in me, but I hadn’t even come close to accepting myself or being comfortable with who I was. I was plagued with insecurity (especially about my legs/butt). This will all come into play with the decisions I made to get myself into the catfish situation.
For those of you that grew up around this time, you’ll know that the internet then was not like it is today. I had a Razr flip phone (so no Instagram, Facebook, dating apps), MySpace may have still been a thing, Facebook was only just gaining popularity. So the internet was an exciting place. Social media wasn’t really a thing yet so we had to find other ways of seeking that same attention online. I remember using AOL chat rooms to talk with strangers, starting the conversation by sharing stats (17/F/Cali). I think because of my upbringing (good education, smart parents) I had “street smarts” when it came to chatting with strangers. I was wary of the fact that people could easily lie about themselves and most strangers on these chat sites were interested only in getting nudes or sharing dick pics. I wasn’t sheltered enough to be naïve. In fact, I knew exactly what to expect and what I was getting myself into, which fueled my excitement even more.
Enter in the site where it all began - BuddyPic.com. Crazy to think it still exists today. At that time in my life it was exciting to be able to post pictures of myself and have people rate me based on looks. Even though I had my insecurities, there were guys out there (extremely attractive guys even) that thought I was “beautiful” or “sexy.” I remember the feeling of logging into my account and seeing BP Mail [New Msg] with a number 5 or 10 there listing the number of new messages I had received from guys. It was exciting, intoxicating. Looking back now it’s clear how totally vapid and demeaning this site is, but hey at that age of exploration it was exhilarating to know people thought you were attractive.
I can’t remember how long I was using the site and messaging guys before I met Rhyn Fuse (supposedly his real name). The details of our introduction escape me. If anything, he was probably one of the only people to capture my interest in the long-run and make me comfortable enough to take our conversation away from the “security” of BuddyPic. I wish I had saved my account so I could log back in to read our messages and remember how this all began. But I can’t, and my memory of our earliest interactions on that site escapes me.
Fast forward to what I do remember. Rhyns’ pictures showed a tan, fit (not overly so), blonde haired, attractive guy with a sweet smile. He was supposedly from Philadelphia and had that accent where instead of “water” he would say like “wooter.” He seemed like a social butterfly and was popular with the ladies (especially models according to him). Family was important to him, he supposedly had 2 or 3 older brothers and 1 much younger. And for whatever reason he thought I was the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. I think more than anything aside from my looks he was enamored by my personality. Because I was a “guy’s girl,” I was extremely cool to him. I was low maintenance, funny, unafraid to swear or be brash, relate with him about guy stuff. I remember him telling me so many times that his mind was blown that there was a girl out there as cool as me. I guess where he was from, he was used to high maintenance girls who cared only about appearance? Just a generalization I know, but I’m trying to convey why he was so enamored with me. Maybe it was that laid-back, California vibe that he liked so much.
In any case, I was hooked on him as well. Thinking back on it, I think it’s because of how easily I could talk to him. He could hold a conversation. Well that and he would complement me endlessly. I think I was hooked on that more than anything, the butterflies in my stomach and whooshing feeling whenever he would tell me I was the coolest girl he’s ever talked to or the most beautiful girl on the entire site. We would tell each other about our days online, sharing intimate details of our day (me more so than him), our interests, basically anything we could and would talk about. I remember taking the conversation away from BuddyPic, spending hours on MSN Messenger or sending emails to each other.
We also started talking on the phone. I had convinced myself that his voice matched his pictures. It was soft, inquisitive, young-sounding, not too deep, with that Philly accent. I let myself be swept away by this fantasy because it all seemed to fit together. I could picture him as a real person, imagine myself talking to him in person, and seeing us together. Here’s the really crazy part though, and I even knew it was crazy/suspect at the time. Again, remember when I said I wasn’t sheltered enough to be naïve? He had a private number, supposedly because he kept getting calls from random girls and didn’t want people to know his number. Because of that, he could only call me (I couldn’t call him) and it would always pop up on my phone as “Unknown Caller” or “Private Number.” We couldn’t text and I could never call him back if I missed his call. I always had to wait for him to call me again. At the time it seemed weird but never a deal breaker. Maybe because technology back then wasn’t what it is today. I think as time progressed and we entered the era of smart phones, it seemed wayyyy weirder to me that he still had a blocked/private number and I could never call him. Granted I only started feeling that way about 6 or 7 years later.
We literally talked about everything. We respected that we would never see each other in person and lived our own lives, but at the same time had each other to talk to at the end of the day and spill our hearts and secrets to. Going into senior year when I became more sexually active and involved with guys at my school, I would share all of that with Rhyn. Nothing was held back. He was never jealous or possessive. It was a perfect fantasy. The relationship I had with him was unlike anything I could have in person or with the boys I knew. I could talk with Rhyn for hours into the night and email throughout the day. We shared pictures, music, feelings. And of course it then became sexual as well.
It first started out with me sending nudes to him. I remember how excited I felt at the time using my tiny Canon on timer to take pictures of myself from afar. I remember how I would take ass shots and pull my legs just the right way so my cellulite wouldn’t show. I wanted to be perfect for him, after all he was attractive enough to have models banging on his door. I’ll admit, thinking back to it now I took some pretty impressive nudes. Some I might look back on now and think “damn, I looked good.” They were only for him. I never showed those pictures to anyone else. To me, only he truly appreciated them. I would send him emails with multiple pictures titled “For your eyes only – do NOT open at work.” His response to these pictures was an addiction. Always ‘WOOWWWW HOLYY CRAP YOU R AMAZING THAT’S SO HOT.” The praise was endless, never demeaning. He always made me feel like the most beautiful and amazing woman. He was able to wipe away my insecurities. And our relationship never felt overly sexual. We could talk on the phone for hours about anything at all before it might become sexual. I wanted to please him, wanted to take and send those pictures to him. It was never about me, and I think that’s why I put up with the catfishing for as long as I did.
Anyway, I digress. Nude pictures then turned into doing sexual things live on webcam for him. I want to say we started camming sometime during my senior year. Again, as I was becoming more sexually active I wasn’t as afraid to display that sexuality to him via webcam as opposed to staging myself in pictures. I shake my head as I write this, but over our 8 years talking together I never once saw a nude picture of him or saw him over webcam. It was always an excuse, like “my roommate is home” or “I don’t have a webcam,” “I don’t have a camera” or something of the sort. He also said he stayed away from social media and didn’t have any accounts other than BuddyPic, so I was never able to find pictures of him online. I never really cared though. I think it played into my fantasy of the whole situation, and I am very much a people-pleaser. The praise and admiration I received from him was enough for me. I could fantasize all I wanted to about what he was doing on the other end of the screen or what he looked like. I always imagined him to look exactly like his pictures and that excited me even more. To know that I was pleasing someone like him and he was openly loving me for it was enough. He was addicted to seeing me, to talking to me, and I to him. Although I could only talk to him and only when he called me. I was always the one putting on a show for him and I loved it.
Fast forward to my first year in college. I ended up spending it in Montreal. I’m a Canadian citizen, so I picked that college at first because it would be cheaper for my parents and it was my grandma’s alma mater. However, I’d never actually spent a whole lot of time in Canada. I wasn’t prepared for the weather (this Cali girl is no match for Canadian winters) or the drinking culture. I was completely alone in a foreign city, with no friends, adapting to a drinking age of 18, with no family or support nearby. That coupled with the intense winter drove me into a depression. Crying on every phone call with my mom, getting black-out drunk every time I’d go out with some friends I made there, barely able to get myself out of bed to trudge through the 5 degree weather to class a half mile away. The only support system I had through this time was Rhyn. He was the only reason I came out the other side unscathed. He would randomly call me at the time I needed to talk to someone the most. There was one time when I didn’t end up having enough money for the Metro so I had to walk back several miles in the freezing cold to get back to my dorm. I remember the wind-chill was so biting that I could feel it in my bones. I forget how Rhyn ended up calling me then, but I remember talking to him during that whole walk home. He distracted me from my misery and I loved him for it.
I lasted at that school for only 1 semester before I headed home to Cali for good. During that semester the relationship between Rhyn and I grew. We connected over a shared love of music, talked about family and experiences, I would even help him with homework assignments and do some of his assignments for him over email. I still have some emails in my Sent folder in Gmail from when I sent him completed assignments, usually essays. There were days when we talked from sundown to sunrise; I would have my webcam on and talk into the computer while he would communicate back to me via MSN or we’d be on the phone together and he would just watch me through the webcam. Of course looking back on this, it was strange as hell. But at that time it kept me sane and helped me survive the semester. Again, we could talk about everything. I would be drunk and sending him an email about how much I missed him and wanted to hear his voice, or we would be talking on the phone and I’d tell him about a guy I hooked up with last night. Again, he was never jealous or possessive, instead completely accepting of where I was in my life and my experiences.
While this may not be integral to the story, during this time he convinced me to showcase more sexual things over webcam. Like using my rabbit or certain vegetables and sticking them inside my various holes. He loved watching me pleasure myself to completion. And I loved seeing him type ‘YESSSS’ or “YOU ARE AMAZING AND A GODDESS” in response. He would tell me how beautiful and amazing I was, how he wanted to marry me, and how he would never find someone else like me. Yes I was addicted to his words, although I still lived my own life and never let our fantasy rule over my decisions. Again, I think my “street smarts” had a part to play in my ability to hold our fantasy separate from real life.
With that being said, there was one point where I almost went to visit him to bring our fantasy to life. I had never seen him, only spoken to him, so I was anxious to prove that the image he provided of himself to me, and what I fed myself, was in fact real. Montreal is only a several hour train ride away from Philly. He told me at one point he was going to be starring in a charity fashion show. I don’t remember the specifics, but I want to say that I was able to legitimize the existence of this fashion show. Because next thing I knew, I had decided I was going to travel to Philly alone to see the show and surprise him. I remember buying a train ticket online and trying to plan the weekend. The anticipation of it made me nervous to the point of being nauseous. I looked at hotels in Philly and tried to figure out where I would stay, what I would wear. I imagined staying over at his place in his bed. How I would look to him the next morning with makeup smeared on my face. What he would think of me if he saw what my body really looked like (cellulite and thick legs), and that which I so easily hid on the webcam. Reality meshing with fantasy was scary for me to think about. I remember giving myself an ultimatum – either I get on that train to Philly to see him or I get a tattoo. I ultimately chickened out and ended up getting the tattoo instead (my first ever), forfeiting the cost of the train ticket. I will never forget this decision – I am constantly reminded of it every time I see my seashell tattoo behind my right ear. I knew what this catfish situation was like, and what the right thing was to do. The exhilaration of getting my first tattoo all alone, and fairly spontaneously, provided a new excitement and exhilaration that replaced what I was hoping to achieve by visiting Rhyn. I sometimes think back to if I had decided to get on that train. I know I made the right decision.
I forget when exactly I stopped doing the webcam thing for him. By the time I moved back to California and started college close to home, it was late 2009. We would still talk on the phone, but by that point the internet was ramping up and I discovered the excitement of chatting with other strangers online (think ChatRoulette) and really started exploring my sexuality/relationships with boys at college. We would still have late-night conversations and sometimes email, but our communication was starting to slow down. I got caught up in the whirl of being at a school that made me happy, I had actual friends, and I was busy.
This went on for pretty much the rest of my time at college. I graduated in 2012. It slowly tapered off over the next 2 years. I would get a call in the middle of a party at 12 AM by “Unknown.” By that point I knew full well who it was. Sometimes I would answer, sometimes I wouldn’t. I’ll admit I was addicted to the sound of his voice. We were always able to pick up where we left off, conversation was never difficult. I still fantasized about him saying he wanted to marry me and that I was the most amazing girl he’d ever met. When I would hear songs that he introduced me too, I was sucked back into that fantasy and couldn’t stop thinking of him. I think the calls became less frequent because, if anything, we simply got absorbed with real life. The fantasy of it was fading. I think I was becoming more aware of the fact that our relationship wasn’t real or sustainable. Plus by that point we were in the age of iPhones so I didn’t understand why he couldn’t send me pictures, video chat, or call me with an unblocked number. Plus my friends started asking me who I was going off to talk with when he would call me during parties. My excuse was that it was a “friend from college in Canada.” When I started dating my now-husband in 2013, he became aware of these calls. He would ask me who it was and this is where the white lies/twisted truths started. Telling him Rhyn was a friend from college, we didn’t see each other much but still tried to keep in touch. Little did he know that I had never seen Rhyn in person nor did I truly know who he was.
Over the years I spent a lot of time trying to find some trace of his existence on social media. Rhyn Fuse didn’t exist. Not on Facebook, not on Instagram, not anywhere. I didn’t have a phone number to trace and his Hotmail email was a dead-end. Even as I have continued on in life, I still think about him sometimes and do that pointless search for him online. Hoping to legitimize his existence. Hoping that I didn’t knowingly catfish myself over the years. I’m thankful that my time on the webcam or sending him nudes didn’t come back to bite me in the ass at any point. I think about who Rhyn really is, what his life is like now. Maybe he is who said he was. Sometimes I fantasize about running into him in person randomly someday.
This is my confession, something I just need to get off my chest that nobody truly knows about me. If you knew me now as a person you would never guess I had such a story to tell.
Thanks for reading.
