Back injury, huge weight gain since, no pool access.
2020.07.12 09:59 Metallover27Back injury, huge weight gain since, no pool access.
I had a back injury at work in Oct 2019. I haven’t been the same since. Apparently I already had a pre-existing condition (osteoarthritis) (disk degeneration) that I didn’t know about before I fell. Got an x Ray, CT scan, and MRI of my lower back. I’m currently in litigation from this and waiting on a settlement. The problem is I was overweight before I fell and I’ve gained so much weight since the injury. I was about 330 before. I am unfortunately at 380 currently. I haven’t been able to stand for more than 5 minutes at a time because my back tenses up, has spasms, I can’t walk without being hunched over, and makes it hard to breathe with increased heart rate just trying to stand up for long periods of time to try to help do the housework or even take a shower and get ready for the day. I feel like I could benefit from water aerobics or something similar but because of Covid my local YMCA doesn’t have the pool open and I don’t have the money for a pricey membership anyway. There aren’t any public pools anywhere around me and we can’t put a small above ground pool in the yard of the place we’re renting because it’s too sloped and it would be too much of a hassle making a fence for it and getting it graded. What else can I possibly do to get the muscles in my back used to supporting my weight again so I can at least take a shower and help with household cleaning and hopefully lose this extra weight I’ve gained the last 9 miserable months?
As someone who used to be a proud member of the YMCA, I just want to point out how much of a disgrace it has become. The new prices are out, and they're up well over 66% of what they were when I started going there three years ago (it was somewhere between $30-35 a month). The new CEO came around in January and hiked prices by 20% and reduced hours by 10-15% and were planning on cutting hour even further during summer. Now they've hiked it again to $51 a month for a basic membership without access to the plus change rooms. As an organization that is supposed to be a non-profit, I find it absolute bullshit that they have been consistently increasing prices while pay has been relatively stagnant. The turnover rate there is egregious, and a few of the guys who worked the front desk ended up running classes to keep their free Y membership after they quit. I run into some of them in those classes and it was nothing but horror stories. I saw the old CEO's vehicle parked outside one day. Brand new Cadillac (I think it was a CTS) with Brembo brakes and all the bells and whistles. The new CEO just came from Van City banking. Why are you allowing corporate assholes to come in and ruin what was once such a great thing for the community? We want people to stay fit and healthy so that our healthcare system isn't overburdened down the line. Now the memberships are comparable if not more expensive than other for-profit gyms (Anytime is $50 a month). Anyways, I apologize for the rant, I just think it's complete bullshit that this is the path a once well respected facility took. It went from affordable and community focused to hiking prices and slashing hours. There are only a few years left on the lease because they sold the land (land that was given to them for free if I remember correctly, that they sold for $22,000,000) so I was hoping to get the most out of it at that location.
2020.07.06 20:43 jibboo22nd pt of Daycare/COVID-19 equation: Risk & Consequence
Still considering with my wife various options including small family daycares and a nanny share for this fall, when we'll both need to work full-time. In a prior post I'd shared an encouraging NPR story with anecdotal evidence from NYC, where 10s of thousands of kids of essential workers were cared for at the YMCA for months, with no cluster outbreaks. Great reading people's feedback and counterpoints. OK, accepting that in NYC and Nordic countries, daycares operated with low transmission rates among kids, my next questions are what is the risk level for kids, and what is the consequence? In the beginning of this thing, it seemed like the answers were "next to none" and "very little." Then in the spring, reports of Kawasaki-like illness changed the second answer to "maybe terrible or deadly." It has been almost 6 months now though, so we should have better data than the spring. Here is a roundup of what I've seen, to answer the questions "how likely" and "how severe." Please give me feedback and share sources yourself, I appreciate any wisdom of the crowd toddlers can offer! Likelihood (risk)
The chart above is hospitalizations per 100,000 people, from the CDC's COVID stats page as of July 3 Sample size: In theory, nearly a comprehensive view -- correct me if I'm wrong, but it includes hospitals in every state reporting data to the CDC Upshot: Very small chance of children being hospitalized because of COVID compared to adults.
Severity (consequence) Respiratory considerations
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in children: a systematic review of imaging findings LINKSample size: 431 kids. Upshot: Very mild chest illness, and CT scans are not advised except for severe cases.
COVID-severity in general for kids
Systematic review of COVID‐19 in children shows milder cases and a better prognosis... LINKSample size: Large lit review of 45 papers with thousands of patients. Upshot: Children have so far accounted for 1%‐5% of diagnosed cases. Children often have milder disease than adults, and deaths have been extremely rare. In the largest child case series so far, 14 more than 90% of the 2,143 children diagnosed with laboratory‐verified or clinically diagnosed COVID‐19 −19 had asymptomatic, mild or moderate disease. Of the remainder, 5.2% had severe disease and 0.6% had critical disease. 14 According to the disease severity classification used by several Chinese publications, severe disease was defined as dyspnoea, central cyanosis and an oxygen saturation of less than 92%. 14 Critical disease required respiratory failure, sometimes with acute respiratory distress syndrome, shock and signs of multi‐organ failure, such as encephalopathy, heart failure, abnormal coagulation and acute renal failure.
Hidden excess deaths not diagnosed?
Excess deaths by age group. My analysis in Excel, using Swedish whole-country statsSample size: Sweden. Upshot: Couldn't directly drill down to the level of kids, given that the age group cutoffs are 0-64, 65-79, 80-89, and 90+. But there's a 6% "extra" number of deaths in 2020 vs. 2019 in the 0-64 group, and it's double that in the older groups.
Excess Death %
Kawasaki-type COVID inflammatory disease, results just publishedSample size: 186 cases in 26 states, 99 cases in NY epicenter Upshot: This is the scariest info I can find, but with a very small number of cases and some comorbid conditions. Mainly older elementary-age kids as well. Still, you can monitor for the symptoms, which are about the same as Kawasaki, and early intervention is very important: "The hallmark of Kawasaki Disease is a persistent high fever (over 101°F) for at least 4 days in addition to rash, redness to eyes, lips/tongue, swelling and redness to hands/feet and neck swelling. Kawasaki Disease Shock Syndrome is a rare form of this disease characterized by severe inflammation resulting in a child becoming critically ill." From the study: "Of 186 patients, 171 (92%) had elevated levels of at least four inflammatory biomarkers. As of May 20, 130 patients (70%) had been released from the hospital, 52 (28%) remained in the hospital, and 4 (2%) had died. Of the four children who died, two had underlying conditions and three needed their blood oxygenated outside of their body. All were 10 to 16 years old. Median hospital stay was 7 days, and 148 (80%) needed intensive care, 90 (48%) needed medications to regulate their blood pressure, 37 (20%) required invasive mechanical ventilation, 32 (17%) needed noninvasive mechanical ventilation, and 8 (4%) needed their blood oxygenated outside of their body. Fifteen patients (8%) had coronary artery aneurysms, and seventy-four (40%) had characteristics similar to those of Kawasaki disease."
Mythoughts so far
Yes, the latest stats show risks are lowest for kids, and the sample sizes are huge.
Beyond that, using Sweden to look at the excess death numbers by age group, 0-64 is 6% above normal. If the vast majority of deadly COVID cases are adults, and you extrapolate that to total excess mortality, which includes non-diagnosed cases, it still seems very unlikely to kill a child.
If we do send our kid to daycare, monitoring for Kawasaki-type symptoms and early intervention is the most important thing to do.
Background: In 2014, I ended up in the hospital with a burst abscess in my right buttock. I'd been in a lot of pain for about a month along with the constipation/diarrhea cycle. About two weeks prior to landing in the hospital I had been running a fever between 101 and 103. I was at my mother's funeral and just plowed through trying to get on with everything. Finally got back home, made it through a week of work then passed out after taking a bath. My GP at the time diagnosed me with hemorrhoids just prior to me going to my mother's funeral. Turns out that was kinda wrong. I ended up with emergency surgery to remove infected tissue from my buttock, near my rectum. A couple of years of reoccurrences (4 more surgeries in the same area, but not as severe, caught before the abscess burst), several CT scans, tests, and a colonoscopy later, the doctors settled on Diverticulitus as a diagnosis. Per their advice, I'm trying to lose weight, am planning on quitting smoking in a couple of months (50th birthday, figured I would make it a memorable day), trying to get some exercise (YMCA closed because of the virus, yay....). But it's a slow, long process because I will not do a fad diet. I want to do this the right way. Present day: The last couple of weeks have not been pleasant. It seems no matter what I eat I end up with an extremely loose stool and/or diarrhea. If I cough or sneeze, I end up with a mess so I've taken to wearing Depends type diapers. There has also been a discharge that has never gone away since my last surgery. The disposable underwear makes it much easier to stay clean. I've also noticed a little bit of blood occasionally when I clean up after going to the bathroom. I'm trying to decide when to go to the doctor. Now would be rather difficult since most of the area is still in shutdown mode, so I'm not even sure if the doctor I've been seeing here (I moved 2 years ago) is available for appointments. He wanted to do an exploratory surgery last year, but I just didn't have the funds for the out of pocket. I might be able to swing it now, but it wouldn't be easy. So, should I try to make an appointment with the doctor? What reason do I give? Flare up of the Diverticulitis? Just lay out the symptoms that I've been experiencing? Luckily no fever, so I don't think there is any new fistula or abscess forming. I'm at a crossroads.
2020.02.22 01:59 Logic_SandwichJoJo's Bizarre Adventure OC Tournament #4: Final Match - Schioppo Fucile vs. Tunde Ó Santos vs. M.I.A.
The results are in for Match 2... Sand and smoke whipped through the air, swirling together in an eye-watering mixture as Schioppo and Tunde stood opposed to one another. The heated duel hadn’t lasted too long past the 10 paces, yet both were already giving it their all. “Schioppo, you fool! This smoke can only protect you for so long, my Breathers are my eyes and ears…you have nothing! I’ll show you who’s the ‘Quickest Draw in the West!’ Gahahahaha!” Schioppo grunted. She was cocky…which is exactly what he expected, and exactly what he wanted. He clutched his rifle, biding his time under the cover of the thick clouds. It was hard to breathe, hard to see…but he had to hold strong. A breather swept past him, its eyes catching his as it let out a volley of tweets. Tunde grinned. “Oohhhh~ A little birdie told me where you’re hiding, Cowboy! So obvious. Can I even call you a cowboy? A real cowboy would have more wits than that! Or they’d at least have the guts to face me like a man! I guess that’s what you get for relying on a little plastic bottle to keep your cool~!” Tunde drew her gun and rushed for Schioppo, thrusting it forward. “Let’s close out this story with a bang! What do you say?!” A volley of bullets rang out, cutting through the smoke and flying past Tunde’s vision. It was a sure shot, she thought, he couldn’t have survived that. She glanced to the side. Out of the corner of her eye, Tunde saw a figure shift. She turned her head. Schioppo rose out from cover, only a couple meters away. How did he get so close? He was already at her side…From the quick glimpse Tunde got of his face, he had a dark look, one she’d never seen from him…he looked determined, like he was ready to take someone’s life. “How’s this for a bang?” Drawing a water bottle out, Tunde’s eyes widened. Schioppo chucked a dry ice bomb directly at her. He was so close, she barely had time to react. A Dust Breather managed to come off from her body and swat the bottle away, but the blast was enough to throw Tunde off balance, and Schioppo was already closing the distance. “What, can’t handle a little plastic bottle?! I thought I didn’t have the guts, O’ Santos!” Flipping ｢Fire & Ice｣ around, Schioppo slammed the butt of his rifle into the side of her jaw with a loud pop, knocking her to the floor. Tunde laughed, rubbing her jaw with her hand before cracking it back into place. “Very good, Schioppo, very good! It looks like I got you all riled up! You’ve grown so much, and all it took was a foil!” Standing over her body, Schioppo attempted to point his rifle at Tunde. She reacted too quickly however, spinning around and sweeping his legs out from under him with all her strength, knocking him to the ground as she sprung up. “How about we keep this going? Think of how much more progress you’ll make if I get away! Maybe I’ll take one of your friends hostage? They’re in a bus just a bit away, aren’t they…?” She panted. Schioppo yelled, rolling over and training ｢Fire & Ice｣ on Tunde. “That’s enough! This is ending right here…!” Firing off a volley of cold shots at Tunde, a few landed straight on her gun, swiftly cooling it down to sub-zero temperatures. Tunde dropped it reflexively, the air around it continuing to cool. She smiled. “Very well! It’s clear you didn’t like that idea!” She sprinted away as a few more bullets flew past her, diving behind the well. He swiftly rose to his feet to get an angle on the other side of the wall, but a flock flanked him from the sides, throwing clouds of sand into his face. As Schioppo batted the birds away, he was eventually able to clear the sand from his eyes. On the other side of the well, Tunde O Santos was nowhere to be found. Schioppo looked around in all directions, but she was gone, not even footprints were left behind. Schioppo breathed slowly, like his therapist had shown him. She was gone.... He picked up the ruined gun, looking at it. She would get another. Her Stand had escaped his target, too. Fine. He rebroke his nose, setting into place. He would chase her. These injuries...they were nothing. He deactivated ｢Fire & Ice｣’s ability and tossed the revolver into the well, not bothering to watch it splash at the bottom. Beside it, however, was a piece of paper. He deactivated ｢Fire & Ice｣’s ability, picking up Tunde’s ruined revolver and chucking it against the wall of the well, it bouncing off before making a loud splash at the bottom. Strangely enough, next to the revolver was a piece of paper. He picked it up: a map, with a location marked with a circle, as well as a couple cartoony birds and a smiley face. He grimaced. At least she hadn’t actually gone after his friends, but... Shouldering ｢Fire & Ice｣, Schioppo set off in the marked direction. It wasn’t too far from here. The sand, the dust, and the smoke whipped together, concealing him as he made his way towards the unknown. There was nothing left for him here. It’s a Tie, with Schioppo and Tunde both receiving 68 points!
An early lead for Tunde was quickly followed by Schioppo catching up, votes going back-and-forth before ultimately culminating in a 8-8 tie!
Location - Youngstown, Ohio, a few days ago: M.I.A. sat in her office yet again. It had been some time since she and Gioia destroyed HEXSYSTEM’s storehouses, and now she found herself staring at her bulletin board on the wall adjacent to her, pictures and notes pinned across a map of the country. She shifted in her chair, wincing at wounds and injuries still healing over. It had been several difficult weeks and the combined efforts of countless others, but almost all the major sources of XPLICIT in the USA had been dealt with, among them, the Black Beetles, 21 Savages, Who’s Next, and now HEXSYSTEM. M.I.A. frowned as her gaze fell to Arizona. All that was left was Tunde Ó Santos. Flint had barely managed to defeat her, Gioia had fought alongside her, and now she was trafficking in the very drug M.I.A. had been working hard to eradicate. She probably wasn’t working alone. While Gioia told M.I.A. that the Black Beetles had noticed her trying to scavenge from their shipments, the ‘mystery’ of the reports on her desk of a monstrous woman raiding Who’s Next storehouses who was chillingly reminiscent of the Baba’s partner all those months ago seemed all but solved. All of Urban Uprising, unbeknownst to participant and admin alike, had been a plot to peddle the drug nationwide, and now Tunde was looking to do likewise, if the amount she had been stockpiling was any indication. Schioppo had gone off to face Tunde at her hideout in Arizona, Gioia had told M.I.A., her injuries keeping her from assisting him further. M.I.A. inhaled, tilting her head to look up at the ceiling. She was buoyed by thoughts and concerns and plans and was tired, very tired. Tired of the fighting. Tired of how broken it had left all of them. Of how fragile Riko had seemed after Urban Uprising crashed, propped up after a year of effort. Of how Gioia, by her own actions, had shaken herself to her core despite how resolute she had been up till then. And tired of how Schioppo would go and break himself to exact justice. He was aiming to put an end to all of this, aiming to kill Tunde, but, even if it had taken her some time, M.I.A. concluded there was another way. Even if they had been ready to kill if it came to it, they together had stopped Riko, pulled her from the brink of despair, Schioppo himself had been the one to de-escalate. Tunde was a world apart and needed to be stopped, but if they were strong enough to save one, they were strong enough to stop the other. She had become strong over the year, strong enough to lead YMCA, 21 Savages, and her own efforts against XPLICIT. She exhaled, feeling the tension leave her body with her breath. Despite how M.I.A. felt, hers was a good fatigue, one of a job well done and of jobs still to do. Gioia wasn’t in a state to help Schioppo, but she could still act, and if Schioppo wouldn’t heed her, she would stop both him and Tunde. Above all, she had become the most tired of death and how it broke both its victims and its dealers. She walked to the door, glancing over her shoulder for one last look at her office and all its trophies. She would see them all again soon, that she was sure of. She cracked a soft smile, recalling the various outfits she had built around them. She snatched something off a rack, turned off the lights, and headed for the bank’s exit. For now, all she had and all she needed were the clothes on her back, the miscellanea in her ｢Angel’s Plane｣, and the hat on her head. Location - Somewhere in Arizona, Present Day: Among the picturesque hoodoos in an Arizona plateau, the usual peaceful silence was broken by patter of rain, the crackle of thunder, and the rolling of gunfire. Birds soared through the air, swooping and diving at Schioppo, meeting blasts of dry ice in turn. Patches of hot and cold sprung out of the desert rocks and sand as Tunde narrowly dodged shot after shot, returning fire with her pilfered revolver; Schioppo was right, she’d just found another. He’d not been able to follow her closely enough to keep her actions in check, and she was able to slip into a nearby town and procure one before meeting him for the follow-up duel. He grunted, frustrated. The two of them were both a bit beaten and bruised, most from their prior fight, but they’d both taken some grazed shots from one another as well. Neither could deny that they were tired, either; There was no time for sleep, and the only thing keeping either away was the adrenaline of the fight and the biting cold of the morning air. As the battle raged on, the stalemate was becoming even more tiring for Schioppo, though Tunde seemed just as enthused as at the beginning. He leaned out from a rock to line up a shot but took just a hair too long. Tunde was scanning the landscape for him, she wasn’t dodging as gracefully as before. Yet, for an instant, both of them had it…their ‘perfect shot.’ And both of them took it. A volley of bullets flew from both ends towards each other, and they would surely strike true…were it not for a particular interloper. Paper Wings cut through the air at high speeds, as fast as they could muster, coming through just in time to intercept all the bullets that were fired, sucking some into the plane, physically blocking others, but none hitting their intended mark. Schioppo’s eyes widened, and threw his hat down in frustration. Tunde chuckled and raised an eyebrow, turning to the source of this interruption: M.I.A. walking across the desert sand, pistol in hand, and ｢Angel’s Thesis｣ behind her. “Stop!” She yelled, advancing slowly. Her eyes darted around, her Paper Wings keeping her safe from any Breathers. “Stop all this...senseless violence, right now.” Schioppo clutched his rifle tighter. “M.I.A…? How did you find us? Why did you protect her?!” he yelled in frustration. “Make no mistake, Schioppo,” M.I.A. bowed her head solemnly. “I’m also here to stop Tunde and destroy any trace of that horrible...poison that she’s trying to spread.” she said, shooting Tunde a glare. Tunde smirked in return. “But, I can’t…no, I won’t take any more of this.” The gun in her hand vanished into her Angel’s Plane, and she gestured pleadingly. “Nobody else needs to die! We can stop her together, but we don’t have to kill her! Like what we did with Riko!” Schioppo shook his head. “This…don’t bring her up. This is different. Riko was confused, scared and backed into a corner…Tunde is a cold blooded killer, a remorseless monster!” He yelled. “She’s trying to recreate what Nate did! She’s done so many unforgivable things…and I’m not going to forgive the unforgivable..” “I know…I know, I know she’s unforgivable…” M.I.A. shook her head. “But enough blood has been shed in this past year. I’d do anything to stop more from spilling…even if it meant stopping you, Schioppo.” Her eyes narrowed. “I’ve done the unforgivable too, and I was ‘saved’… maybe it’s pointless, but maybe… I think there’s a chance, maybe. I can’t just let that go.” Schioppo felt like he’d just taken a punch to the gut. For whatever reason, seeing this ally against him…no. Deep breaths. Just like he learned, deep breaths…He was in the right. His clutch on his rifle relaxed, and he looked at M.I.A, without contempt, without anger, speaking calmly. “I…Hope you understand what you’re saying, what this means…” He eyed Tunde, whose weapon was at her side, and inched out of cover. “I know that you’re a good person, that you’re not unforgivable. But...I’ve made up my mind. Even if you try to stop me, even if it means I have to go through you, I’ll do what has to be done.” M.I.A. sighed. She knew it wasn’t going to be easy…but, fine. She nodded tersely in his direction, before swiftly being interrupted by raucous laughter. “BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” Schioppo and M.I.A. turned to see Tunde, back arched, shaking as she clutched her stomach and howled louder than the thunder itself. The two just stared at her as her cackling echoed through the expanse until she snapped herself back into an upright position. Her dreadlocks jostled around her face as she spoke, clear, intense, and ecstatic. “What a fitting climax for our tale!” “All of you, all of us borne by our ‘stories’ here: to the Wild West, the frontier lands, the land of progress.” She paced the desert sands, pontificating to her audience and no one in particular. “But we’re not the first to do so. Since the bygone days of the cowboy, people have been pulled here for riches, freedom, justice...‘Manifest Destiny’, the old fools called it. But that ‘story’ wasn’t theirs alone; it was built on the backs of the people who were there before…the unfortunates, the immigrants and slaves brought to power this land. Blood and turmoil soak this place, history tangles into itself....so much was sacrificed for progress, progress which echoed, echoes, will echo from gold to silicon and beyond.” “And just as the history of the West repeats, so does our history. Schioppo Fucile and M.I.A.. La Horde Unie and Uncivil Umbra. To kill and to subdue. A story you’ve already told one chilly November day, no?” Tunde yawned, whether out of feigned boredom or actual fatigue was unknown, but neither of the two dared lower their guard. “One sought to bring Urban Uprising to justice, the other sought to solve its mysteries, both by any means necessary....but you changed, you evolved. Through conflict, your ‘stories’ changed, pulling in ‘tropes’ that were unknown to you. There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns. Empathy, restraint, compassion—wonderfully interesting ‘tropes’ you once shared, but no longer! Now that you too are ‘unshackled’, tell me! What will you sacrifice for your progress, for your ‘Wild West’?” Only the drizzle of rain replied. “...Very well. Even if the sun has set on that bygone era, we and our ‘stories’ still stalemate with one of its classic ‘tropes:’ the Mexican standoff.” Tunde panned her cannon at Schioppo...then M.I.A....then back to the first, repeating in a steady pattern. “Thesis and antithesis. Hero and villain. None can advance, none can leave without defeating, surpassing the other, and becoming something more. Only one ‘story’ may continue here, only one sun may continue may continue to shine...but may we all burn brightly to that end.” Silence from both of them. M.I.A. looked at her sadly, and Schioppo with an empty look on his face. Despite the differences in how they looked, both had similar stances. Ready, primed to go. Wary…surely of her tricks. Wise. “...Ahahahahaha! So little reaction!” Tunde cackled. This past year had been such fun for her, so many interesting experiences, so many new people…If they wanted to be spoil-sports, then she could just pry a reaction out of them. It would be…about a year now, since all of them had joined. How had they been? Dreading the game, looking forward to its mysteries? No matter. She wouldn’t let things be so dour on such an occasion. Lightning flashed, striking somewhere far away. Tunde shrugged. "If words fail you, I hope for your sakes that bullets don't." As if of one mind, each took a step to the left, and another one. They moved slowly, ever so slowly. M.I.A…she’d grown. From the pit she’d been in for so long, from the emptiness inside of herself. She’d grown. She glanced to Tunde. She’d been in that…that pit for so long. She’d been dragged down by herself. And at the end it had been others who got her out. She had been ‘saved’, and she would…she had to extend that mercy, even to someone like Tunde. Her fist clenched. Her mercy…would be firm, and if Tunde didn’t recognize her intentions for what they were, M.I.A. would show her again and again as necessary. She looked to Schioppo. He was going to be…a worthy opponent. One she didn’t want to ever face. But if that’s how things would be, she would accept it. They walked surefooted, focused, even as clouds gathered overhead, and rain began to fall. Schioppo thought about his room back home. A black hole. Full of figurines, of posters, of stuff, it seemed empty to him. Too small. It’s where he had wasted his childhood, could have turned into a shut-in in that tiny, tiny world. How foolish…how could he have been so stupid? He had been so full of false bravado, wanting to prove to someone, to anyone, to himself, that he had some worth. He did. Even if his head didn’t believe it…he did. He had helped others…had friends waiting for him. He’d seen a lot of things, experienced so much. It was sort of funny, at the end of all of this, that this was so similar to his favorite movies. His Stand hung at the ready. He had no choice to believe in himself. Win or lose…he’d believe in himself. Yeah, that’s a promise he could make. Lightning lit the battlefield, wind and thunder the only noise. Despite the distance between them all, the fighters saw each other as if it were mere meters…. One step, then another, then another. Nearly there… nearly there, to put an end to this all. Urban Uprising…Lyte…XPLICIT… this was the culmination of a year of effort, heroism, and tragedy. Ever so slowly, they reached some of the rocks surrounding the area. Boulders, scattered as if by the hand of some careless god. All watched each other, they walked slowly…slowly…preparing for the upcoming battle…slipping out of sight. This would be the last time on this plateau that they would be anything besides ‘enemies’. And sensing this, immediately, the three warriors sprung into action. For the final time in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OC Tournament 4…OPEN THE GAME! (Art by Skelly_Tan) Location: A plateau in Arizona. The plateau is 75 meters in radius, thus 150 meters in diameter, each tile 10x10 meters. Dotted over the plateau is small hoodoos, naturally formed pillars of rock that are 2m tall and 1 meter diameter. These are scattered around, and do note they act as good cover. All players start 40 meters from each other around the center of the arena, with each behind cover. In other words, they cannot see each other at the start of the match. There’s currently a thunderstorm going on, and the battlefield is lit well by constant, dramatic lightning. Visibility is not a concern, and lightning will not strike the battlefield. The rain is relatively mild, and will be a nonfactor to anything (Schioppo’s bullets, Dust Breathers flying, gasoline’s flammability, other explosives.) In other words, mechanically imagine the battlefield as dry conditions with the ground wet. The ground is rough rock with a fine layer of dirt that gives good grip when running. As a note, keep in mind players are not allowed to make any agreements of any sort with any one of their opponents. Goal: Defeat your opponents!
"Lesson 5! Yeah...I'm sure that's what we're on now." This is the ‘final test’ of this adventure, hm? You couldn’t have learned to stand on your own without the help of other people. Honor them, and take inspiration from the tournament in this fight!
“Part 4…END” This is the ending to a long chapter in your life. All of these wonderful people…you wouldn’t give them up for the world. Show your respect, and take inspiration from the tournament in this fight!
“You’re trembling. Are you cold?” What have you been doing…? For so long, you’ve been afraid. But now, with the help of your friends and allies, you’ve…changed. Dedicate this fight to them, and take inspiration from the tournament in this fight!
Well guys, we’ve finally reached the semifinals. It’s been one hell of a year, and one we’ve been honored to spend with you. But we can’t celebrate too early; we have three matches to go, and we’re gonna end this tournament on a high note! Location - Somewhere in California: Gioia sifted through the pile of papers on the table, the bustle of the small cafe she had settled in surrounding her. The information she had received from Lennon was good. It would be, it got her off his back, and she was working to take down a competitor. She took a sip of her coffee, enjoying the flavor. Or maybe it was the Fellers’ as a whole…though she would like to think her performance was impressive enough to warrant a more personal hesitance. She frowned a little as the buzz of her phone. She’d asked the rest of her friends to leave her alone for a few hours, who could possibly— Oh. Gioia opened her phone, glaring at the messages.
This is Call. We have to talk to you.
Gioia rolled her eyes. Call, as they referred to themselves. A mystery to her, and one she had little inclination to solve. Gioia wasn’t suspicious of the beast anymore… they had proven dedicated to their stated goals at least. But that didn’t mean she had much in the way of regard for the beast. The Stand had been obtuse and unpleasant at the best of times. And their efforts to reach out had been mostly spurned from her. She had enough on her plate. Gioia set the phone down. It buzzed again.
We need to speak. This is related to Andrew Lennox.
That got a chuckle out of her. The Stand, from what she gathered before they left was that they had made some sort of deal with the man. In a way, she pitied them. They’d been caught up in the orbit of ‘that man’ as well. And was still trapped in it, even after he was gone. Little wonder it might be interested in her, by proxy. She couldn’t deny some level of interest. The tug of ‘that man’ was a constant for her. The thing that spawned him, that had created him. But that curiosity was tempered by urgency. She had limited time, after all. Saint Cecilia was out there, XPLICIT still in circulation. Curiosity would not overcome the urgency she felt. The phone pinged again, and her stomach plummeted. This time it was an image. Of a concrete block of a building that looked like every other building of its type in America. Drab, and boring. Weeds dug through the concrete, and the sky was grey. In the middle were two women, in front of a crate full of familiar little bottles of cough syrup. Gioia zoomed in on one of them. It was… her. Gioia Arancini. Her face, her features, her hair. She had never seen this place. That wasn’t her. That Gioia was wearing clothes unfamiliar to her. Most striking, her face was the same, but her expression alien. Her eyes… empty, with nothing behind them. Gioia remembered the thing that Andrew had said. When ‘herself’ knocked on her door, what would Gioia do? She brought a hand to her chest, closing her eyes and slowing her breathing. She needed to control herself. That picture was burned into her eyes, her face, her ‘self’, copied over. Was this how Andrew had felt? The original, the one she had never known. So. She was being pulled back to him again. Those bottles, and those people, meant that she really had no choice. Another visit to the broken shreds of Andrew’s life. She dialed the phone in her hand, and— Location - Youngstown, Ohio: M.I.A. sat in the main YMCA: GIT GUD office, recently renovated and refurbished. Various hats and Tags adorned the walls—a bonnet, a sombrero, a fedora, among others—among other mementos from her travels. Yet, M.I.A. herself felt dwarfed, swallowed up by her surroundings as she sat in her throne, anxiously waiting and gripping her cellphone as she looked around at nothing in particular. The dialtone rung in her ears as the phone connected to the last being she wanted to talk to. Alarm Call, the beast that had hurt Flint months back, now having contacted her again. She didn’t have a choice. M.I.A. was scared. That ‘thing’ that they had shown her, a picture of her and another woman, Gioia. Standing together, with empty eyes, in front of a green-gray sky. The phone picked up. She didn’t speak. The phone stood silent. She needed to know…the meaning of that image, of the meaning behind it. She found her voice. “What—what is that,” she said. Keep it steady….“Who is—who is that next to, uh…Gioia?” That was her name, right? She was unsure. M.I.A. shook her head. “I’ve never met her before, that all looked so…what the hell is happening?” The response was immediate, tinny, cold. “Unit 01 reporting in. Those are neither you nor the person you know as Gioia.” A shudder ran down M.I.A. spine. This was the Stand that had hurt Flint, and led him and Fighter to their user. The one that had tried to tempt her to join La Horde Unie. She could respect they had no choice in large part, and their efforts to moderate the tournament itself. But she could never be comfortable. Even that cold voice was almost too much for her. Her thumb hovered over the button to shut them, this image, out. But she wouldn’t. Not yet. “If that wasn’t ‘me’,” she whispered. “Then who was ‘that’?” “That woman is not a person.” Her eyes widened. “That is a clone, with your flesh and Stand as a template. We believe those two to be advanced combat models, for use solely in such operations as: Protection of sensitive areas or persons, assassination, kidnapping, and other objectives that do not require adaptation outside of force-based outcomes. They come without cognitive ability for disobedience, ability for speech, or any empathic abilities whatsoever. We project between fifteen to twenty percent of brain matter is nonfunctional for these purposes.” Alarm Call paused for a moment. “These are designated by us: Husks. The official designation for these templates is unknown, though specific designations for these clones are.” M.I.A. blinked. “C—clones?” What? Weren’t those supposed to be just…in movies? And why her? What had she done to get anyone… no, anything interested. She looked at ‘her’, trying to find a true difference between them. Alarm Call barreled on, its flat tone a harsh, dissonant staccato. “These clone templates are used by an artificial intelligence named HEXSYSTEM. Abilities are unknown. How HEXSYSTEM chooses templates is unknown. A man named Andrew Lennox was templated by them. You should be aware of one. We have been working for the past month in preliminary stages to destroy it.” “How did… how did they get ‘me’?” She asked. “I never met him. I didn’t….” “It is known.” Alarm Call continued. “That these are templated off of people that HEXSYSTEM’s creations have met. It is possible that you met a unit of this machine in the past.” ...She couldn’t remember anything. Anyone. She wouldn’t know… if she had met a fake person. But she didn’t doubt it. It didn’t matter, anyways. “Even so, why are you… why are you telling me this?” “We have contacted you with the knowledge of your goals. We know that these Husks are controlling a warehouse full of XPLICIT, hoarded by our enemy for unknown purposes. If consistent with your previous actions, we project you are likely to destroy. Gioia Arancini is expected to destroy, consistent with her objectives. We will destroy, as is our objective.” Gioia. M.I.A. frowned. She had heard of what happened in Lyte Headquarters, and didn’t approve of the woman at all. Alarm Call was scary, and shady. But Gioia had gone too far, had allowed her ally to go too far. ...But she had also had her identity taken. Was she afraid? Or raring to go, to fight these things? How did she feel about Lennox? “What… what are their names?” She asked. This XPLICIT, this…. “In accordance with the policy, the designation of these Husks are as follows: Gioia B. Arancini and M.I.B.” She frowned. Even her name. “I… need some time. I need to talk to—” Lauryn. She’d know what to do, maybe. “—to someone. And I need to ask more questions.” “Acceptable.” “...” She hung up without another word. There was nothing more to say. Location - Outside Colorado Springs, Colorado: A few days had passed, and it was now night in Colorado. The westward flight had been simple enough, and it was a short cab ride out from the airport to the city outskirts. She had paid the driver and had taken the rest of the journey on foot, a few miles walk. Evening passed into night had passed into early morning, but M.I.A.’s mind was too occupied to notice. More than tired, she felt sick. Some Skynet fucker had stolen her face and her Stand to deal in the drug she had spent the past month, no, the past months dealing with. Dismantling Nate’s conspiracy was one thing, but this was way above what she had been prepared to deal with: rogue AI, clones, and XPLICIT itself all spiraling and coalescing into something...something she still felt compelled to stop, at the very least for her own sake. To deal with them, she had to work with Gioia and Call. She could hold her nose and shake their hands, but she wouldn’t like it. They had gone too far, could go too far in their pursuits for justice. Would she have to return to those same depths to stop HEXSYSTEM and its Husks, as Call called them? She shook her head and took deep breaths. Lauryn had been similarly taken aback as she was, but her take was quintessentially...her. However horrible puppets the Husks may be, they were still living beings. No matter what needed to be done to them, they should still be treated with dignity. That was her—that was their line, and she wouldn’t cross it. The warehouse complex from the picture loomed in the distance, but she had arrived at her destination, standing in front of an unassuming door. The coordinates Call had given her lead to this rundown shack made of cement and wood, rotting from neglect and abandonment. She sighed, brought her hand to the door, and knocked thrice. Time to get this over with. It swung open, revealing Gioia and Call. Gioia sat on a small wooden bench, pressed to the side of the room by Call themselves, the three dogs merged into a kerberos that took up much of the space. M.I.A. squeezed past to sit next to Gioia, the three of them only illuminated by the red, blue, yellow electronic glow of Call’s circuitry. Alarm Call crept forward, the mechanical beast glancing between M.I.A. and Gioia. There was a tense air of unease between the two of them, and even the Stand could sense that. Nevertheless, they maintained their typical stoic air, addressing them tersely. “We have asked both of you to come here for a task of utmost importance. I will not waste time with pleasantries.” Their usual cold demeanor did little to comfort their nerves, but Gioia especially had come to expect that of them from their time working together. Gioia spoke up. “...That photo you sent me. That ‘clone’, resides here?” AC responded without pause. “Yes.” Gioia nodded, her jaw tightening. M.I.A. sighed heavily, the anxiety steadily creeping up on her. “Here… so soon after the business with the tournament. Cazzata!” She kicked the wall, leaving a dent in it. Taking care of this, too, with everything else on her plate. Alarm Call continued speaking: “To reiterate. Like Gioia said, this is the work of the same being that was responsible for Andrew Lennox, designated as HEXSYSTEM. We have called you here to assist us in eradicating the assets that it has stored in this warehouse, including the doppelgangers of you that it has decided to create.” Whereas Gioia was a bit more prepared for this outcome than M.I.A., neither were entirely comfortable with the prospect of having to fight ‘themselves’. After a moment of silence, Gioia speaks up once more. “I decided before I came here. I’ll do it. The sooner we destroy that... thing, the more that the monster that created it is weakened, yes?” AC Nods, “Affirmative.” they turn to M.I.A. “Do you accept as well?” M.I.A. takes another deep breath, taking a moment before nodding lightly as well. “Yeah… I’ll do it, but… I’m not going to kill anyone, not anyone but myself… that thing that’s supposed to be me.” Gioia and Alarm Call glanced at each other, Gioia responding: “Don’t worry. You won’t need to.” “We have only called upon you two for assistance; no one else will be exposed or vulnerable to becoming templates for HEXSYSTEM.” M.I.A. sighed. That was good; she didn’t want anyone else to have to deal with this. For someone to be walking around with her likeness, her voice, maybe even her thoughts…she had no control over what they could do. She shook her head, clenching her fist and attempting to steel herself. That thing walking around wasn’t her. Even if it looked like her, even if it sounded like her… she was the only true ‘M.I.A.’ Each breath she took to calm herself down was as if she inhaled a deep resolve. She turned to AC and Gioia, working to hold herself tall. “Then… There’s no time to waste, let’s go.” After a bit of travel, they’d finally made it. The area where these clones were being held. It was a complex of warehouses, drab and Alarm Call had already traversed a bit ahead to scout it out, so that left just M.I.A. and Gioia together. Advancing forward, they found several bodies littered on the floor, clearly Alarm Call’s doing. Even if they were ‘just’ clones, it was a dark feeling for them both to see so many corpses scattered about. As they carefully passed by one of the bodies, however, Gioia glanced down and gasped. “Is… Is that...?” M.I.A. glanced down as well, a pit forming in her stomach. As she looked upon the body, it was clear who it was… or at least, who it looked like. It wasn’t entirely accurate…there were far too many tattoos across its body, it was practically fully covered, and the hair was more of a pointed mohawk then a spiked mess…but there was no doubt about it, this was a clone of Mylo Xyloto. “Damn… they weren’t kidding, anyone who met him could be...” Gioia muttered, looking the clone up and down. “It’s not quite there, though…it actually has a shirt on, and it’s wearing roller skates instead of roller blades. Mylo would have a fit if he saw that,” she mused, trying to find some sense of lightness in the situation. M.I.A. nodded. In a way the inaccuracy brought her a kind of comfort. No matter how many clones they could make of her…it would never be quite her. Interrupting her thoughts was the sound of a commotion ahead. Metal scraping, blasts of fire; no doubt about it, Alarm Call was fighting more clones. Gioia and M.I.A rushed ahead to their aid, calling their Stands out. As they approached, Alarm Call spoke loudly, their voice echoing through the duo’s phones. "I have the ones out here under control. The two with your likeness are located within the warehouses. Dispatch of them." Out of the corner of her eye, M.I.A. saw movement in the door of one of the warehouses…and a glint of light from metal. Several shots rang out, and illuminated by the muzzle flares was the face of her doppelganger, firing from the shadows. ｢Angel's Thesis｣ shot forward and drew the bullets into the plane, before the clone swiftly ducked back into the warehouse. M.I.A. reeled back and gasped. She had been building her nerves, preparing herself to take her clone out…but seeing her own face in person, it shook her to the core. Gioia saw M.I.A.'s pained expression, and placed her hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry… I know how hard it must be. You don't have to deal with that one, I can take care of it." She spoke firmly, but not unkindly. M.I.A. grit her teeth and nodded, glancing out in the distance at Alarm Call, lit by an explosion. Their shell was cracked, gears and wires exposed to the elements, one of their heads barely able to move. The Stand moved away, back into the fray. She sighed. This was… necessary. "Then… I'll take care of yours, too. Neither of us will have to face 'ourselves.'" Alarm Call spoke loudly yet again over the phone "If you two are prepared to deal with the remaining clones, I will stand guard outside. If any more come, I will dispatch of them." M.I.A. nodded, looking to Gioia, and back to the warehouse. A deep breath in. A deep breath out. “I… one last thing. Before I go in. I need to ask just… one thing.” Her hands were clenched. Her arms shook a little, as she took out her phone. “Just one thing. I need to know if they took ‘that’ too.” Gioia raised a brow, ｢Love Kills｣ still on guard. Well, M.I.A. certainly seemed serious enough. “I… do you know my name? Uh. My, actual one.” Call’s response took a second. Unusual, from what Gioia knew of the Stand, they must be checking. And then they spoke, the speech crackling. “There exists no official name for ‘you’ on any online database. If one exists, there can be no credible information to trace it to you.” M.I.A. smiled hesitantly, looking between Gioia and her phone. Pure relief. “So it can’t have ‘taken’ that for me. Yeah, I think if it couldn’t take that, then.” She took a deep breath in, and out. “I can only give that out.” She looked Gioia dead in the eye. “My name is M-Maggie Isabella Alejandro. That’s… that’s my name. I… ‘M.I.A.’ isn’t my name… isn’t related to it at all.” She averted her eyes, looking to the building with her clone in it. “I’d like both of you to. To remember that.” “These are just imitations.” Gioia stated. “My face, and my Stand, does not equate to me.” No two-bit fake would be able to meet her own standards, no actor able to take her life. In both meanings of the term. “I don’t think I can apologize to… them.” M.I.A. said. “I’m not sure if they’ll understand me. I… I don’t know. Let’s go.” “Yes. Let’s.” The two walked forwards, in between the buildings—one for Gioia, the other for M.I.A, Husks laying in wait in both—and separated. Gioia darted from shadow to shadow, arriving at the storehouse wall. She crouched flat against it, pressed her ear to the wall, and listened. Nothing. Even still, getting the drop on an opponent anywhere as strong as M.I.A. would be crucial. Gioia pulled back from the wall as ｢Love Kill｣’s arms manifested around her. Its fingertips gently touched the wall, before curling into it and ripping out a large chunk as if it were paper— —Wings clipped at the padlock, the birds looking around furtively as they did so. M.I.A. remained hidden in the shadows, ｢Angel’s Thesis｣ standing over her protectively. She inhaled, exhaled, steadied herself. She had steeled herself for worse. After all, she had dealt with many Stand users, and this was a pale imitation of one. The padlock fell to the ground, and M.I.A.’s flock returned to her as the door swung open. Best take this head on. She crept in, hand on her revolver to draw at a moment’s notice. M.I.A. looked left— Gioia looked right. The wall was taped back shut behind her as she crept through the storehouse. It was largely unremarkable: crates here and there, pale fluorescent lights hanging up above. ｢Love Kills｣ stoically hovered beside her, the glittering of its magenta leotard the only indication of its willingness to lash out at a moment’s notice. If the carnage Alarm Call had left behind was any sign, the Husks would quickly tear that peace asunder. But as Gioia came into a clearing, that peace remained intact, the Husk standing perfectly, inhumanely still, its guns still in their holster— But M.I.A.’s grip tightened. That...it was not Gioia Arancini. It was a shade, a pale imitation: the vibrant colors of Gioia’s outfit were bleached out, reduced to a light, flaccid pink, only discernible from white by the clone’s powdered visage. Yet, it stood with something approaching the original’s sense of grace. Heels together, toes pointed to the sides and perfectly 180° from each other, hands at rest in front: some ballet thing, M.I.A. remembered. And if the shade were a ballerina, then its Stand was its partner. The black to its white. If the storehouse and Gioia B had an air of peace, then this Stand was pure malice. Its leotard was a jet black, darker than any M.I.A. had seen. Oily and ragged feathers broke up its perfectly streamlined silhouette, flaking off its cape and body. Its spikes, horns, ribbons were all replaced with this terrible plumage which framed its visor: a hooked beak of obsidian in which M.I.A. saw herself and knew that it had seen her. If a Stand was one’s fighting spirit, than that appearation was more of a— —Shadowy ink drenched the crisp, ready-for-inscription yellow of ｢Angel’s Thesis｣’s form. No. This wasn’t ｢Angel’s Thesis｣, Gioia reminded herself. The humanoid had the shape of the original—the lithe, angular silhouette was unmistakable—but none of the soul. Instead, blotches of white swam over the abyssal black coating the Stand, curves and lines flowing into and over each other in unintelligible patterns that fanned out to the crows that circled the two figures. Yet for how unknowable the Stand was, its User was freightenly simple. M.I.B. was wearing a white jumpsuit, unadorned with any of the baubles M.I.A. had picked up over her travels, not even her jacket and goggles. Instead, the clone was a pale young woman with a faint smile on her lips, M.I.A.’s olive skin bleached a sickly white. Even her dark black hair had faded to a light blue, waves and curls now cut short and straight. Gioia grimaced in disgust. No matter how dangerous the clone was, it lacked the life off the original. While M.I.A. was uncompromising, brazen, and lively, the Husk was docile. Demure. Dead. M.I.B. turned to look at her. Hmm. ｢Love Kills｣ stretched, rolling its arms out to a combat stance beside Gioia. She herself took position, arm raised, legs crossed, one foot in front of the other. The weight on the balls of her feet, she was poised to spring into action at any moment. So she would be cleaning up after Andrew some more. She returned M.I.B.’s cold look with a cold glare. That last epithet was inaccurate. At least for now— “Alright, you bitch!” M.I.A. roared, more to hype herself up than to intimidate the lifeless doll in front of her. A mimicry of a Stand user, a mockery of Gioia herself. It could copy her motions, her abilities, her Stand, but it fucking was not her. Paper Wings as her eyes, ｢Angel’s Thesis｣’s as her beak, her revolver as her talons, she would tear this forgery apart tooth and nail. A sneer on her face, M.I.A. walked forward, loading her gun bullet by bullet as Gioia B remained perfectly still. She snapped the chamber into place with a loud CLICK! and pointed it dead ahead. No rubber bullets. She could see this now. This clone was…empty. M.I.A. couldn’t hate her. There was nothing to hate. Nothing to dislike. Nothing to talk with. This clone was not Gioia. It wasn’t going to be her. This being was…sad. M.I.A. didn’t hate this clone. But she couldn’t allow…this. She would have to fight. No holding back. “OPEN THE GAME!” Location: Two identical storehouses outside of Sugar Springs, CO. Gioia is located to the west side of each, and M.I.A. to the east, a map of the stage is given here. They are 50m wide and 30m long, and each pair begins 20m apart in the relative center with a row of shelves to either side of them. (Each tile is 5x5 meters.) The storehouses are filled with a large variety of suspicious contraband, a combination of documents, ingredients to make various drugs (esp. amphetamines and opiates), a small drug lab at the southern area of the storehouses, and in the northern areas are a variety of smaller weapons, (unloaded) guns, stun batons, knives, etc. There are a few forklifts among the storehouse. The storehouse is 7m tall, and there are 5m tall shelves with boxes stacked on them. There is nothing to differentiate boxes of papers versus boxes of drug materials. Everything is stored on the shelves and there are 4 rows of 12 metal shelves spaced 3 meters apart from each other. Each shelf is 6 meters long and the rows on the end touch the sides of the walls. It is night out, but the storehouses are lit well by fluorescent lights. Goal: M.I.A. utterly defeat Gioia B. Arancini, and Gioia Arancini utterly defeat M.I.B.! Practically, assume that both Gioia B. and Gioia will do roughly the same strategy, and the same with M.I.A. and M.I.B. Essentially, this is a traditional deathmatch, despite the participants not technically facing ‘each other’. The clones will not hold back, so please keep that in mind.
“You are acting peculiar today. Where is your usual composure?” HEXSYSTEM has copied your body, likeness, and Stand, but you still know yourself better than anyone else. Use the full extent of your Stand abilities!

2020.01.19 20:50 TheJadedJesterGoing to be living in my car very soon
Hi everyone, I’m new to this and new to this sub. I have had some really shitty things happen the past few years including my mother stealing my identity and putting me $30,000 in debt, tanking my credit, and refusing to pay for any of it. I lost my job months ago on top of that and despite applying all over the place all the time for months, I haven’t been hired or even interviewed anywhere. Because of all of this, my credit is shot to hell and I can’t take out any credit cards or loans to help me get by. I owe my landlord a fuckload of rent I can’t pay so I’m being kicked out at the end of this month. I’ll only have my car to live in, and my 120 pound elderly mastiff with me (I can’t find anyone to take her in temporarily for me). I have a few questions as I prepare for this. I’m wondering where it would be safe to park my car and sleep at night, especially with a fear-aggressive guarding breed that will not take kindly to any knocks on my window and will go Cujo crazy. (My dog was abused as a puppy and is very overprotective of me and perceives everyone and everything as a threat, she is especially wonky about my car for some reason). On top of that, I’m wondering where I could keep up with my hygiene, like showering. I thought the YMCA used to be free but it apparently isn’t these days and I won’t have the money to join a gym like Planet Fitness to shower at. Any suggestions? I’m fine with brushing my teeth with water bottles in the car and things like that (I’ve slept in my car a few times before when I was trapped in an abusive relationship). I’m in CT but I’ll probably float around between Hartford and Brewster, NY since I’m familiar with all the cities/towns in between. I’m in the middle of signing up to be an Uber Eats driver (my crazy dog won’t allow people in my car which means no regular UbeLyft driving for me). I also just reserved a storage unit for my mattress, my dads old recliner (he died a few years ago), and other necessities like my clothes and shoes. What else should I do to better prepare myself? What are safe places to sleep at night? Does anyone else have a pet with them - how do you make it work? I would love to take the first FT job I can get and start working right away, but I can’t leave my dog in a car for 8+ hours, especially not in this freezing cold or the heat in the spring/summer. Thank you in advance. 🖤
Thanks Vanya. Wow what a shit song. Same ole majestic bullshit as in all religiously pious song and poems. “David Freiberg of Jefferson Starship mixed, sang on the chorus, co-produced, and recorded Nam Myoho Renge Kyo at his studio (FreeMountain Studios).” There is some potential there, but it’s at least 25 years too late and the new agey folk influenced power rock ballad style was already stale then. As far as whether Nichiren Buddhism will survive in the U.S. is concerned, Nichirenism has a problem: it doesn’t feel right to Americans. Buddhism has succeeded in the States because it addresses a need for an outlet for religious sentiment that doesn’t require belief in anything counter to an Enlightenment understanding of the world. The western, modernist versions of Buddhism–eg. American Zen and Vipassana groups–have done very well by separating practice from ritual and deemphasizing the latter. Difficult to do with Nichiren Buddhism, the central practice of which looks, to outsiders, like a ritual. Questions are inevitable: why the chanting? Why is odaimoku chanted in Sino-Japanese? What is wrong with English? How is the belief that the words namu-myoho-renge-kyo, chanted in that order and with limited understanding, represent reality in some deep way not simply magical thinking. I ask these questions not to disparage your faith but to raise questions that Americans, whose basic instinct regarding spiritual matters is no longer Christian but pragmatist, would naturally have upon first viewing a group of Nichiren Buddhists practicing. Again, this is not because America is a Christian nation. It is no longer Christian except in certain reflexes. There is plenty of mainstream acceptance of non-Western religious traditions. Yoga, for example, complete with its meditative practices, is on offer at the local YMCA. You can’t get much more mainstream than that. What Americans do expect of religious transplants, however, is that they be intelligible. In spite of all of the excellent and truly educational writing Ryuei has done about Nichiren, the Odaimoku, and the history of Buddhism, none of his postings succeeds in removing the exotic flavor of Nichiren practice. In fact, you might say his approach to explaining the faith is over-cerebral. It appeals to those who enjoy history and intellectual challenge, a description that fits a lot of people who hang out on the internet reading blogs like Fraught with Peril. The intellectual approach, however, scares off most others. SGI members remain the most numerous Nichirenists in the States and I am convinced that this success is due in no small part to the very interesting, anecdotal, not-too-demanding renderings of its beliefs by Woody Hochswender. Further, American zen and other mindfulness groups have had time to become nativized: American zen groups may venerate founders from oversees like Shunryu Suzuki, but they have taken root and are run entirely here. Those founders taught American students who then started their own Zen centers, the most successful of which are not governed from abroad. This trend is a cause for optimism: Mark Porter’s efforts, through ION, to create an independent, home-grown organization may be the 21st century version of what Suzuki and Maezumi did in the sixties. What ION lacks is the transitional figure–the Suzuki or Maezumi–who springs unambiguously from the old establishment but is willing to train students who will not view themselves as beholden to the same establishment. Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I can tell, no Nichiren group in the States has yet moved beyond the necessity of sending prospective priests back to Japan for training. Once there is a critical mass of priests, however, there will be impetus for America-centered training. I was thinking about Kelly McClain’s Nam Myoho Renge Kyo song that Vanya linked. It sounds a bit forced; like he thought he should write a song about the Daimoku, but was not sure how, so he wrote it anyway. It was like Mr Clark was trying too hard to express the power, wonder, and general awesomeness of the Daimoku. The song does not quite take me there. “Questions are inevitable: why the chanting? Why is odaimoku chanted in Sino-Japanese? What is wrong with English? How is the belief that the words namu-myoho-renge-kyo, chanted in that order and with limited understanding, represent reality in some deep way not simply magical thinking.” Right, we’ve all fielded those questions. I’ve heard some pretty good answers over the years, from Ryuei and Robin among others. But the questions are simple while the answers are complex. That sometimes doesn’t work too well in America. Look at politics. If your explanation doesn’t fit on a bumper sticker you might as well forget it. I think another problem comes directly from Nichiren. He does claim that just chanting it once, without any understanding, brings benefits a billion times greater than millenia of serving Buddhas and so forth. And it’s not only infinitely effective, but it’s the only thing in the universe which is effective. It’s hard to read his material without getting the impression that the phrase is some kind of magic. The same aura of magic-ness surrounds the Gohonzon as well. On top of that some of the organisations promote it in an even more magical way. Like, their Gohonzon is wonderful but the other lot have demon infested Gohonzons that will take you straight to hell even if you have no idea what you are doing. Or one way of chanting is good and another is dangerous. I pretty much believe that to make Nichiren’s path attractive today will require jetisoning some of Nichiren’s core positions, not just the way it is presented. Such as the exclusivity and the idea that Daimoku on its own, without understanding, is enough. Maybe the LS as the source of all useful knowledge. What does that leave you with? It seems a bit like reducing Christianity to Jesus was a really nice guy who said some wise and useful things about life. People like meditative Buddhism because they can see results. Meditation really does produce noticable changes. With Nichiren’s practice you are told that while you are chanting you become a Buddha. Really? I never did get that one.
I heard that last bit, too. Was not impressed.
I’m pretty sure the studies show that chanting mary had a little lamb has the same effect as more traditional mantras. I don’t know that Nam Myoho Renge Kyo was part of the test so I suppose it coiuld be the onne magic phrase more potent than all others. (;.)
Yeah, sure. Why not?
I’ve watched SGI for over 20 years. The lazier it has become, the less attractive. The easier they made the practice, the more empty seats it had. The less about chanting, well, the less chanting there is. I’ts now like diet soda-nearly pointless (no offense to diet drinkers, I just never saw the point…. you don’t order a diet milkshake either).
I don't know if the link will work; it's on Fraught With Peril and that site's having some problems right now, apparently. Link is to a cache copy - the content is from about 7 years ago.
2019.06.17 20:29 mrtoddwSarasota 18-30 year old's Starter Guide v1.0
Congratulations on your choice (possibly poor choice /sarcasm) to pick Sarasota to start your new life. The purpose of this guide is to navigate those not used to Florida and the Sarasota area to activities and locations you’ll most likely want to enjoy living here. Sarasota and Florida, in general, are seen as a retirement area, so activities for younger people don’t get the same market share exposure. This guide is intended to be open-ended and allow for other users to comment below with their additions and thoughts. This guide is not intended to be an exhaustive guide but a list of places and things you’ll want to find in our area. Feel free to skip portions that don’t apply to yourself. As with absolutely ANYTHING, (Your Mileage May Vary).

At some point, you’re going to get hungry. The cost of living is rather low here and food being some of the lowest prices in the country. I’ll split this into two parts, restaurants and grocery stores. Since food tastes are broad, this is only a sampling of cuisine types. The Amish are down here and their cooking is divine.

A little knowledge of local fish can go a long way in helping you to avoid frozen crap shipped here from. Halfway around the world (which is, surprisingly, the majority of seafood sold even here). Some of the most popular and delicious local catches that you might not be familiar with are Pompano, Cobia, Hogfish and Tripletail. Restaurant tips: Visit the most popular places after 8pm. Baby boomers tend to be done with dinner by 7pm generally. St. Armands really cranks up after 8pm, same with Siesta Key. The food here in Sarasota suffers greatly from the terrible feedback of old people whose tastes aren't compatible with anything bold, creative or spicy. Their complaints slowly turn the food at a lot of places here toward bland, over-salted denture fodder. This is especially true for ethnic restaurants, which are, on average, far superior just up the road in Bradenton where demographics are different.
Florida has medical marijuana. If you are over the age of 18 with a qualifying condition and medical history along with residency, you can get a recommendation for medical marijuana. Sarasota is a humid subtropic climate. (Hong Kong is similar) We have two major seasons, a wet and a dry season. We technically have all four seasons. Due to both where we sit on the line of latitude 27.34 °N, the longest day is 13:52:03 (Jun 22nd) and the shortest is 10:25:01 (Dec 22nd) and the lack of trees that lose leaves during the fall, you'd be hard pressed to notice it was fall or winter down here. The average weather is 82° and sunny. June - Sept is the hottest part of the year. It's on average 95°, near 100% humidity 24/7 during this time of the year. The sun going down doesn't reduce the temperature. Staying out of the sun from 11 am until 4 pm is vital during this time. If you see someone outside past 11 am, they're either a tourist or someone who has to work. The Farmers Market is a ghost town by 10:45 am.
We have hurricane season from June - November every year. The chances a hurricane will hit Florida during the hurricane season is essentially 100%. Preparing every year as if you will contend with a direct strike category 3 hurricane is a wise idea. There are essentials to staying alive and safe during this season. We are trying to compile the best list of shelters and evacuation routes as possible. We will link to official sources along with posting the information here. Historic data for the last 150 years worth of hurricanes: https://coast.noaa.gov/hurricanes/ I've included the link for Mike's Weather Page. If you're not familiar with Mike. He's a Floridan out of Oldsmar and has been running the best weather page since 2004. I personally trust my life to the data I can get from here. Evacuation: Sarasota has 5 levels of flood evacuation. These levels are: A, B, C, D, & E. The lowest laying zone is A and is 1st to evacuate. Hurricane Evacuation Routes/ Sarasota Flood zone Map (⛑️🌊): https://ags3.scgov.net/knowyourlevel/ The most important part of hurricane preparedness is knowing if you should evacuate or shelter in place. The safest advice would be, if you don't feel you will be safe in your home during a hurricane, evacuate. The last thing you want is to be stuck on Interstate 75 when it makes landfall. You'll have at LEAST 3 days notice that a hurricane is coming. If where you're living falls in flood zones: A & B, evacuation as part of your hurricane preparedness. We would advise you to seek shelter with friends and family inland. If you moved here by yourself and don't know anyone, hurricane shelters are available. Keep in mind, hurricane shelters are LAST RESORT. Don't show up to a shelter until it's been announced it's been opened as well. The biggest problem with newspapers and reading them is you don't know who they're owned by. There are four major newspapers in the area. Two newspapers are locally owned and two are out of state-owned. Three of the newspapers are owned by corporations and only one, Bradenton Times is owned by a private, local individual. As I noticed other Redditors have also done this race I will follow with my take on the race. Race information What Ironman 70.3 Connecticut When June 2, 2018 How Far ≈ 69.5 miles Where Middlebury, CT Finish Time 5:06:31 Goals A Finish Yes B Sub 5:45 Yes C Sub 5:30 Possibly, the swim being 750 meters instead 1.2 miles it would have been close Background I got into this sport after becoming vegan and listening to Rich Roll podcasts and eventually being lead to John Joseph. I think the series that he did with Brian Rose had a huge effect on me coming into this sport. John Joseph has a way telling it straight, whether right or wrong, and for me made the sport attractive. Something about trying to push yourself until near exhaustion I found enticing. This is my second triathlon, the first being a sprint in July 2018, and had no experience swimming or biking before hand, with only the occasional short runs during Crossfit routines. After the first triathlon, and feeling the highs from crossing the finish line, I got hooked and have immersed myself completely in the sport, following the latest news and Youtubers for advice and information. And eventually went from an aluminum SLR 1600 Trek to a 2015 Quintana Roo Illicito with upgraded Ultegra components and Zipp 303 wheel set. Training I had plans on following a training plan, went out and bought Joel Friel's "The Triathlete's Training Bible", but didn't even open it and just organically created my own plan, with the help from a family friend who has done 70.3s before. In the last 3-4 months of training I had the same weekly layout with periodization blocks, deloading every fourth week. Swam Monday through Friday mornings from anywhere between 3/4 mile to 1.2 miles, working on technique and speed. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons went on the bike trainer for 45 minutes working on increasing my average speed. Tuesday and Thursdays afternoons, I ran anywhere from 5 to 6.5 miles, working on increasing my average pace. Saturday mornings I did a long run anywhere from 10 to 13 miles, working on increasing my pace. Sunday mornings I did a long brick, where I would row 15 to 35 minutes, then go on the bike trainer 2.5 to 3 hours, then run 5 to 9 miles. I felt really good throughout training and progressed every block, keeping notice of my heart rate. I used a basic Kinetic Fluid trainer with a CycleOps Powertap G3 Hub power meter, have a Concept 2 rower (from Crossfit days), and a Landice L7 treadmill (for rainy days). I swam at a local YMCA club, luckily the mornings I was able to chat with other triathletes and had input from a successful triathlete/master trainer on swimming techniques (my worst discipline). The last two months of training I really dialed my nutrition during my Sunday bricks so I knew how foods would affect me. Basically, learned how much I should drink and that Clif Bars (Blueberry Crisp!!) gave me good energy, plus I used During Clif Endurance Drink. My only worry during training was my lack of outdoor riding on my race bike, I think the previous 6 months I rode outside three times (on the old Trek). Plus the lack of outdoor swimming really freaked me out, I went down to Florida in March a was able to swim 3 times in the ocean. The only thing last minute that I change that not sure if it made a difference was my running shoes, normally I was running with Sauconys, either the Iso Rides or the Iso Guides, but the weekend before I went out and bought the Nike Zoom Pegasus Turbos, they felt awesome at the store and during the couple runs I had with them during that last deload werk. Pre-race I arrived in the area Friday afternoon, toured the town a bit, checked in at the event, then went out to find local eats and a grocery store and then tested the hills a bit on my bike for an easy 35 minute ride. Went to the Lebani Lebanese Grill (hands down the best falafels and hummus!) that night then headed to the Airbnb to sleep like a baby! Woke up Saturday and went out for an easy 6 miler and relaxed for the most part the rest of the day. The afternoon I checked in my bike and drove the bike course. I wanted to swim the waters but I overheard that they weren't letting anyone swim outside of the little roped in area so I ditched that idea. That night I went back to the same restaurant and stuffed my face. Came back to the Airbnb packed my bag, setup my nutrition, set the alarm clock, and freaked out the whole night about the swim and that my bike would fall apart. I could not sleep a continuous hour for the life of me, had anxiety the whole night. Race Still freaking out from the night before, I got out of bed at 3:30 am, grabbed my bag and nutrition and headed to the event by 4:10 am. While waiting in the parking line and trying to take my mind off the possibility of Jason Voorhees coming out of the water, I messed around with my watch and practiced with the triathlon function (Garmin Fenix 5). Finally parked and headed over to my bike, set all my gear up and mentally went through the different transitions (never practiced during training 🤷🏻). Hung around my bike for a bit, eating a Clif bar and sipping on Clif Endurance, while getting to know some fellow triathletes and learning some useful information, like load up on the Bodyglide (anti-chafe balm) helps not only putting on and taking off the wetsuit, but also reduce the likelihood of developing blisters around the neck. At this time, it was around 6:30 am, and the start of the swim was schedule to start at 6:45 am sharp, so I headed to the water to get in a pre-swim. By the time I got there, there was some people in the water, but they started to ask people to get out since the fog was heavy and they were going to push back the swim start. After a while people just started to get in the water so I followed suit since I was worried that they wouldn’t let us have a pre-swim before the start. After I got in the water and did a couple laps, my nerves finally subsided, and I was ready to get this race going! Since this was going to be a rolling start, I lined myself conservatively around the 45-minute mark (big mistake). At this time, they decided to cut back on the swim distance since the fog was not lifting and the lifeguards would not see us passed certain buoys. Around 7:30 am they finally started the race, putting us in every 5 seconds, but eventually that was taking to long and they just let us go in as we lined up. Swim – 16:09 / 2:09 100 m pace This was the most comfortable I have felt in swimming open water, something switched from the time that I was waiting in line to taking my first few strokes. Besides the absolutely mess of it from there being hundreds of people in the water at the same time, I was feeling really good about finishing. I was able to keep good technique and consistency throughout the swim, with only a few times that I had to really try to pass through people since the water was so congested and it seemed like a lot of people were struggling to just move forward. I managed to only get punched in the side of the head once and escape out of the water with no injuries. Transition 1 - 5:17 Well, I definitely didn’t practice putting on or taking OFF my wetsuit, so I struggled big time on trying to pull the sleeves off with my Garmin watch still on, will have to figure it out for next time. I had so much adrenaline running through me that I didn’t even notice how bad the pavement was when I first walked to the swim. Everything was laid out accordingly, so I shoved a Clif bar into my mouth while putting on my shoes and helmet, and tried to run (for the first time) in my biking shoes to the bike start line and clipped in. Bike - 2:57:24 / 18.5 mph avg I think this was my favorite part of the whole race, I felt really good going into it and wasn’t too concerned with the hills after my short practice ride on Friday. From driving the course on Saturday I kept reminding myself to try to stay in the middle of the road for as much of the course as possible. Since these were northeastern US backroads, they saw extreme cold winters and so there was a lot of long fissures and pot holes along the edge of the road. I noticed a lot of people blowing out there tires and even near crashes from people trying to avoid them. Other than that it was a beautiful scenic course, only wishing the sun was out at his point. You know you are feeling good when you don’t even get off the saddle going up hills and at the same time are passing people. Four weeks prior I did change out my rear cassette from a 11-25 to a 11-28, so this might have helped a little, was actually debating going to a 11-32 for this course. The one thing I noticed from this course was that you were either climbing or descending, there was very little or if any flat portions, so I felt I was constantly changing gears (which I almost never practiced), I bet an electronic shifting system would of helped a lot. I felt pretty well fueled and hydrated and luckily not once in those 3 hours did I have to stop, I packed with me two Clif bars and two Clif Endurance drinks (probably only drank 1.5 of it), plus I grabbed a banana through one of the aid stations. Transition 2 - 2:47 The sun started finally coming out at this point and coming back the event location I was trying to pick out my family who said they would meet me at the event once the bike ended. Coming through bike entrance I was filled with joy as I saw them and hearing them scream my name. It was worth the almost crash as I forgot to unclip and slow down before the dismount. This gave me an extra boost as I ran towards my station to change for the run. The day before I bought those elastic no-tie shoe laces, which helped immensely getting through T2 quicker. On my way out, I decided to throw on my hydration belt that I brought just in case. I think this helped out since in the end I didn't have to stop at aid stations. I think some are worried about the extra weight, but for me it's how I trained so why change. I also grabbed Clif gummies and a Clif bar (mistake!). Run - 1:44:56 / 7:57 mile pace I was surprised how great I felt going into it, but I guess when my last Sunday brick workout involved a 35 minute row, 52 mile/3 hour on the trainer, and a 9 mile run at a 7:30 pace, I should be well prepared. The only thing was I should have ate the last Clif bar during the last couple miles of the bike, since as I got moving it felt like the bar wanted to come back up. It was a great run course, the first mile was pretty much down hill and tree shaded so that made it easier to develop a good pace. The rest of the course was a two 5.5 mile loop of rolling hills. This is when I wished the clouds we're back because it got hot and humid quick. I noticed a lot of people were walking the hills and stopping at the aid stations. By mile 4 I couldn't hold it at longer and had to take a piss break, what a relief, felt so much lighter and at ease. The rest of the run went really well, I tried to pace faster after mile 6, but it was hot and the hills got to me, so only manage to get two miles that were close to 7:30. Let me tell you about that last mile, it was mentally and physically the hardest run of my life. Even though it was in the shade, it felt like it was a straight climb and everything in my body wanted me to walk. Every horizon I just wished it was the end of it, but it just keep going up. I still managed to hit a 7:57 pace on the last one. Crossing that finish line was the greatest feeling of my life! All I wanted was to see my family and as they came up to meet me it was the happiest I've been, especially seeing my mother filled with tears of joy. Post-race This is when everything started to take it's affects, both mentally and physically. After taking the obligatory picture with my medal in front of the Ironman back drop, I wanted something to munch on before meeting with my family for that post-race meal binge, unfortunately for a vegan that meant bananas and oranges. The food Ironman provides post race, hamburgers and hotdogs, is kind of subpar and hopefully one day Ironman changes that. Once I picked up my bike and packed up all the gear back into my car, I told my parents to meet at a Japanese restaurant close by, unfortunately the Lebanese restaurant is closed on Sundays. Stepping out of the car I got hit with all the downs that come with pushing your body to the limit, everything felt tight and had major brain fog. At this point I just wanted a long shower and a comfortable bed. I was hoping large amounts of water and high-sodium dishes would bring me back to life, it didn't. I really didn't have a appetite, but I knew I needed to put something nutritious in my body, so I loaded up on edamame and vegetables rolls. After a great meal with my family we hit the road for a long traffic filled commute back to New Jersey. The following day I rested and got a massage and decided that my results and feelings it gave me the motivation to try another one, so I signed up for Ironman 70.3 Lake Placid. The suffering was enjoyable. 😁

Map of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island The moment I got a chance I slipped aside privately and touched an ancient common looking man on the shoulder and said, in an insinuating, confidential way: “Friend, do me a kindness. Do you belong to the asylum, or are you just on a visit or something like that?” He looked me over stupidly, and said: “Marry, fair sir, me seemeth—” “That will do,” I said; “I reckon you are a patient.” I moved away, cogitating, and at the same time keeping an eye out for any chance passenger in his right mind that might come along and give me some light. I judged I had found one, presently; so I drew him aside and said in his ear: “If I could see the head keeper a minute—only just a minute—” “Prithee do not let me.” “Let you what?” “Hinder me, then, if the word please thee better. Then he went on to say he was an under-cook and could not stop to gossip, though he would like it another time; for it would comfort his very liver to know where I got my clothes. As he started away he pointed and said yonder was one who was idle enough for my purpose, and was seeking me besides, no doubt. This was an airy slim boy in shrimp-colored tights that made him look like a forked carrot, the rest of his gear was blue silk and dainty laces and ruffles; and he had long yellow curls, and wore a plumed pink satin cap tilted complacently over his ear. By his look, he was good-natured; by his gait, he was satisfied with himself. He was pretty enough to frame. He arrived, looked me over with a smiling and impudent curiosity; said he had come for me, and informed me that he was a page. “Go ’long,” I said; “you ain’t more than a paragraph.” -Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Banners are:

Some things I learned about Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island while researching this map:
The New Britain YMCA developed racquetball as well as dribbling in basketball.
Storrs, Connecticut was designated "America's Best Place to Avoid Death Due to Natural Disaster" by Slate magazine. I can't tell if this is a left-handed compliment, a joke or just a fact.
Despite claiming seven national championships (and being awarded twelve), Harvard has only ever been to one bowl game (they defeated Oregon 7-6).

2019.03.16 00:15 kmonie360Moving to Bear, DE - need cycling/running routes.
I’m moving to Bear just off 896 - I run, bike, swim a ton and I am looking for the best/most popular running routes in the area. Runnable or bikeable from home is important, I see a nice wide path on the side of 896 - thinking that might lead to big options I don’t know about. (I’ve always swam at YMCAs and Delaware Ys look awesome and new compared to ours in CT - so I’m thinking I’ll just stay consistent there) Thanks!
